Fell way below my expectations. The Chicken Kebob was bland and tasted rather fishy. Weird. The wrap was ok. Will not be returning.

Rumi isn't a restaurant--it's a teleportation device disguised as a dining room. One minute you're…read morejust hungry, the next you're wondering if you should start learning the language and cancel your other dinner plans for the rest of your life. Let's start strong: the baba ganoush was impeccable. Not "pretty good," not "I'd order it again"--impeccable. Creamy, smoky, confidently delicious, like it knew it was the best thing on the table and didn't need to brag. The lamb kabobs then showed up and completely stole the spotlight: tender, perfectly seasoned, and basically melting on contact. And yes, the white sauce comes on the side, which is ideal because it's so good you'll want to dip everything into it--kabobs, bread, possibly your dignity. The mango drink? Absolutely unhinged in the best way. One sip and I forgot what I ordered, where I parked, and what my personality was before this moment. "To die for" feels accurate, but also misleading because you'll want to stay alive long enough to order a second one. And then there's the service. I didn't feel like a customer--I felt like I'd been adopted. We were treated like family, friends, and students all at once, getting an enthusiastic, genuinely fascinating education about the food while being cared for like honored guests. Dining at Rumi feels like stepping into another country where the food is better, the people are warmer, and everyone is just thrilled you showed up. Come hungry. Leave full, happy, and slightly confused about why all restaurants aren't like this.

I placed an…read moreonline order for pickup and as I arrive I'm waiting for 5 minutes at the counter while the worker is on his phone talking to his friends. He finally greets me and asks what I ordered, he then goes to grab my food (which isn't even packed yet) and continues to stay on the phone for another couple minutes in front of me as he slowlyyy packs the food. He then forgets to include one rice and two naans that I paid for. I tell him he forgot the items and he then goes BACK on the phone for another couple minutes before trying to put the items in, which at this point I was too frustrated and didn't want to make a scene so I just left. Safe to say I won't be coming back especially if I have to wait 10 minutes to pick up an online order that's already prepared.

In short: Tasty, but extremely small portions. Got the chicken shish kebab and also a garden salad with feta. Feta was an extra $4. Fresh but more of a large side-salad than a full salad. The chicken kebab lunch is listed in the menu as "kebabs" with rice, but there were only 4 pieces of chicken and about a 1/3 cup of rice. :( split with my boyfriend and we were like, "Well--that was a tasty snack." I felt obliged to let him eat 3 of the pieces so at least one of us had a semblance of a full meal. Not generous portions by any stretch for $30. Friendly staff and lovely decor. Definitely would not return though. I'm actually now irritated because the people next to us just got enormous portions. Wtf?

I ordered the chicken kabab and my husband had the lamb shank. For dessert, we ordered the oven baked rice pudding. It is served cold, however. This is a must visit when you're in town! One of the owners, Baran, takes the time to explain Mediterranean options and how he purchases the highest-quality olive oil when he shops for the restaurant. What we chose for our second time experience: Appetizer: We decided on the Sauced Eggplant Entrees: Hubby chose the Branzino, and I chose the chicken kebab. There are extensive lamb choices and vegetarian offerings. I like dining here earlier in the week when it's not so busy. Today, I got the scoop on the large mural in the BYOB restaurant. Marden's Tower/Kiz Kulesi, a prominent landmark currently an observational tower, sits on an island on the Asian side of Istanbul. There is plenty of parking behind the restaurant, and You Can Dine Al fresco if you choose.

It's a cozy small place and we enjoyed sitting by the window, the music added to the ambiance. We ordered the cold appetizer selection and really enjoyed sampling the different items and the grilled pita was delicious. I ordered the hot tea, and loved it so I ordered another. Hubby ordered the Turkish coffee and it was served as customary in a mini delicate cup on an ornate tray with a cube of Turkish delight. It was also good, but not as thick and rich as we had experienced at another place prior. I ordered the dorado filets, which came with rice and salad. The salad was actually my favorite, it had a light dressing that I enjoyed. The fish smelled a bit fishy, and actually had quite a few bones. I ordered it filleted instead of whole for that reason. Needless to say, I didn't care for it as much as I could have. The grill flavor and marks were nice, but the smell and bones threw me off. The rice was overcooked but did taste nice, I didn't finish it either. Husband ordered a lamb dish that had cut up pieces of pita in, and a tomato sauce. It was okay but not great either. So overall, it was fun and I enjoyed the experience but not sure if I'll return or not. Maybe I'd order something else entirely and it would knock my socks off.
