Superb customer service and wonderful ambience and products in this gem of a store! The owner, Bill, goes out of his way to help his customers get exactly what they need. Not only do they have beautiful stationary, cards, and wrapping paper, but also office supplies. Located in Carmel Crossroads, it's a beautiful area to walk around and shop. read more

This is my go to place for beautiful wrapping paper, note cards, small gifts, guest napkin towels, and greeting cards. Quality items.

Spencers has an unusual and broad assortment of very nice cards and I will go there when I need something for a special person or occasion. There are cards here that you won't find anywhere else. They are more expensive, but worth it. I found the staff to be friendly and I noted some reviewers have commented on how often they approach you to ask if you need help. Its true that I was there for 20 minutes and was asked 3 times if I needed help. . .it was a little annoying, but I don't think they meant any harm by it. And when I did ask a question, they were very knowledgeable--such as whether a local artist designed the card, etc. read more

What an incredible card selection! And so many other great stationary items, too. Beautiful gift bags, lovely smelling candles and soaps, wax seal kits, and yummy chocolates! The store employees were very friendly and welcoming, and I overheard them asking another customer if they could order a particular product for the customer, that they were currently out of. Very helpful service!! read more

An old family favorite for generations now. Beautiful, high quality products, but still affordable. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Spence's has an incredibly extensive inventory of paper products and gifts. it's just fantastic and everything is great quality.

I got kicked out of the store. I've never been asked to leave anywhere in my life, so at least it was a novel experience for me. And actually, they didn't even have the courtesy to speak to me. It was Valentine's Day and I had several Valentine cards to give, and had been to Spencers before, so I went in to see their selection. As I was perusing the Valentine cards, my cell phone rang, and I knew I had to answer it, as it might have been a doctor with an update. I quieted the ring, turned and headed for the door, when a drabbly dressed saleswoman raised her arm and pointed imperiously to the outside. Yes, I had hesitated for a moment with my hand on the half-door because I needed to say hello so that the person on the line knew that I was there, and because it was raining outside and I needed to put up the hood on my rainhat. This is the worst treatment I have ever had in a commercial establishment, and is a truly shameful way to treat customers. No love here, and so long Spencers! I then wound up going to the CVS drugstore, and spending over $80. on cards, gifts and chocolate. read more

The owners were helpful, kind and friendly -- I look forward to coming here again. They have gorgeous ribbon, an amazing selection of cards, and sealing wax kits that made lovely presents! read more

The new owners are incredibly nice. Selection is similar to what the store had previously, there just seems to be a few more local artists for the cards. It's a treat to go there with all of the beautiful wrapping papers, ribbons, pretty paper plates & napkins, gift boxes and bags, stationery, and other classy things, etc. read more

Im from out of town and decided to go in this cute little shop. I went in thinking that the shop was so cute and cozy but I was asked 3 times from 3 different people about how they can help me. When I first walked in I was greeted by a young lady near checkout. She stared at me longer than needed and I knew right away that they will definitely watch me browse the store. At first, I was thinking about the way I was dressed to be perceived differently, but my outfit didn't look indecent at all. When browsing, I can see from my peripheral view that they would pretend to be working near me or talk to a customer near me. This is such a small shop to be stealing from. Beware if you look raggedy that day. read more

Finally, there are beautiful white lights and garland decorating the shelves and a Christmas Tree glowing in the window at Spencer's! I bet you can even walk in and shop while sipping your cup of coffee!! Wonderful!! Wishing the new owners good luck and a prosperous 2023! read more

Helpful staff. Nice selection. Bright and relaxing shopping environment. A little bit of everything you need.

This place has changed since the last time we visited. It used to be a laid back place to browse for cards. I was surprised when both of us were asked numerous times whether we needed help. Really? I can appreciate an offer to help once but 4 times? We've patronized this place for over 20 years whenever we're in town however this will be our last. Maybe they've had problems with theft but this is not the way to handle it. I wish them the best of luck. read more

A beautiful selection of cards stationary and art supplies. I drop by every year I visit Carmel. read more

i popped in as a tourist and was so delighted to browse the everflowing shelves of this store. the owner was incredibly nice, recommended me some beautiful things based on what I had picked up already. You could find everything here! cards, food paperware, notebooks, and even day to day office supplies. this store is such a pleasure to explore! read more

I've shopped at Spencers every time I've visited Carmel over the past few years - and it's definitely my favorite store in the area! They are a locally-owned business that puts great care into their selection of cards, art supplies, and other stationery goods. I've gotten really unique cards, beautiful leather-bound notebooks, Italian frames, wrapping paper, and out-of-this-world delicious malt balls here. I always find something whenever I stop by! I'm not sure what all the other reviews are about - my experience with the staff here has been fantastic. Last time that I was in the store they helped me pick out a great gift for a friend - and even gave me a few excellent recommendations for things to do in the area. Cannot recommend it more highly for gifts in Carmel. read more

What do I like about this stationary store? Let's begin with its staff. Everyone is knowledgeable about all its products and it is so well stocked. Even with printer ink. They are all quite professional yet offer a genuine neighbor welcome to all. Their merchandise is priced fairly and competitive. A very pleasant shopping experience. So what do I really like aboat Spencer's, everything! read more

I've shopped at Spencers Stationary many times over the years and overall have always been happy with the product quality and service. However, yesterday I stopped by to pick up a items, and as I walked into the store a man working there grumpily barked at me "we're closed!" I was surprised first by the rudeness but then also, there were two other customers in there obviously still shopping around. I looked at my watch and it was 5:29pm and I did see that closing time was at 5:30pm. But here's a tip... lock the door so people don't think you're open. The store looked open, especially with two other customers in there. With all the construction going on at Hwy 1 & Rio Road I know that the Crossroads businesses have been affected, so it's really surprising to be turned away from spending money in a store there, and barking at me was just unnecessary. read more

This is a charming stationery and card shop. The employees sometimes have a strange habit of whispering to each other and they tend to follow you somewhat suspiciously into the back room where the office supplies are housed. Check out the whimsical hand made cards by Yoder -Do -made with twisted and coiled paper ribbon and googlie eyes. read more

I love shopping at Spencers - a true gem of the Carmel area and one of the best stationary stores I've visited. If only there was a store like this in San Francisco...! The product offering is just incredible - a beautiful selection of the highest quality brands in greeting cards, stationary, albums, journals, and so much more. While I usually come to the shop with a set list of items I am looking to buy, I am always delighted and surprised by some new gift or thought for friends, family, or colleagues. The staff is warm and friendly (you can tell this store is locally owned with a deep history and connection to the Carmel community). I have always appreciated their help and recommendations! Spencers is well worth a stop on your way down to Big Sur or during your stay in Carmel. read more

One of my favorite stores in Carmel! I've been shopping there for years and it's my go-to store for art and school supplies. I spent over an hour there last week and the service was excellent. The products are always top notch. read more

Delightful store filled the finest quality merchandise. It's a "must visit" if you're at or near the Crossroads shopping village.

the world according to noelle ~2012~ Spencer's Stationary is one of my most favorite stationary stores ever. They have the most extensive and beautiful selection of greeting cards for almost every occasion, calenders, leather bound notebooks, day planners, photo albums (leather or cloth), decorated boxes for holding photos or other items, items that you would need to seal an envelope (stamps, wax, etc.), stickers and many more items. The store is easy to navigate. In the back of the store there are more office supply and school type items for sale. What caught my eye were the beautiful photo frames from Italy in either gold or silver. I've been coming to Spencer's Stationary for ages with my mom. It's only now as an adult can I appreciate the beauty of the stationary and other paper goods sold here. I purchased our wedding album here and was quite pleased. Customer service is friendly without being intrusive. Yes, Spencer's Stationary is expensive but it's worth every penny for all there paper goods are of excellent quality. Happy Shopping, Noelle read more

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!!! Shopkeeper was beyond rude and absolutely creepy! Yelled at me to get my licensed service dog out of the store, and when I explained that it was indeed a legitimate service dog, he didn't apologize or even acknowledge his mistake, he simply went back to ignoring us while we quickly browsed through the store while being serenaded by the employee or owner's ridiculously loud and unpleasant sighs... OMG!!!! This place THE WORST STORE EVER, and totally deserves all of the negative reviews it has received!!! I WILL NEVER SHOP AT THIS AWFUL STORE AGAIN!!!! read more

I'm very torn between the selection of 3 stars versus 4 stars. Yes, it did feel like one was being eyed constantly for mediocrity? thievery? general inappropriateness? while browsing the store... but what a store it was! I have a thing for stationery. My latest kick is a penchant for funky file folders. I found my fix here. Good thing the man with the flu was sequestered in the car waiting for me. I hadn't even started to look at the cards when I knew it was time to cash out. Just a few minutes yielded the need to buy 4 cards, just for the heck of it. They have some neat stuff. But they also have some really standoffish service. Not overtly offensive, but enough to make you feel like a peasant. What, do I smell really bad? Eh, whatever... I still am going to pay way too much for things made out of paper in your store. p.s. I have to say, their malt balls are delicious. I don't get the connection between the store and the confection, but they were yummy. read more

Love this place for the sheer variety of pens and stationary they carry. My favorite notebooks, by a French maker named Clairefontaine, is carried by them - very happy discovery! For serious pens and a small but beautiful collection of writing papers, go downtown to a tiny little gem of a store called Bittner's. It's tucked into a small space on the main drag near Tiffany's. read more

I love this store!! It is such a jewel and a staple in the community. Their selection in all things stationary and incredible quality is AMAZING!! Also, the knowledge of the owners and their assistance is unparalleled. I am so grateful for your shop and all of your hard work especially during these difficult times. Small local businesses at its finest. From a big fan, thank you!! read more

I always love to support local businesses. However, while I was shopping for Christmas cards today with a friend, the owner approached us and asked us to take our conversation outside. We were speaking quietly and there was essentially no one else in the store. Great cards but lousy attitude. Hallmark here we come! read more

As many others have posted, the service and willingness to throw customers out is extraordinary at Spencer's. I was basically thrown out of the store tonight because I had a sleeping 12 week old puppy in a shoulder sling. I look forward to seeing the "going out of business sign" hanging in the window. I can buy everything they sell on Amazon for a better price and have it in a day. The only thing I won't get to experience is the miserably untalented people who work there. read more

I have been a supporter and fan of Spencer's for decades. They are truly a polished gem in the retail norms of chain and box stores. The selections are world class and extraordinary. The staff informative, kind and helpful. This store is a Carmel institution and rightly so. I absolutely love Spencer's! read more

As many have noted here, the selection of cards and paper goods at Spencers is excellent, but the attitude of the staff abominable. I walked in with a sealed metal coffee mug and was told sharply and immediately to bring it to the front counter and place it there while shopping. A minute later a friend walked in with her small dog and was told to leave. "No dogs allowed," Madame Defarge snarled. Carmel has a great tradition of welcoming dogs -- even in many restaurants -- but the icy shopkeeper at Spencers apparently inhabits another, elite world. Here's a clue, lady: treat your customers with a modicum of courtesy, or expect to lose their business. You've lost mine. read more

Wow. Snooty and high handed. They have a nice selection of cards and stationary, so that is a plus. On the other hand, the cashier clearly collaborated with a customer, probably a local she recognized, so that he jumped the line ahead of me, and then because the item I wanted had some slight damage, they declined to sell it to me without paying any attention to me or asking if I wanted it anyway. Not impressive. read more

I agree with Kate-Marie completely. This place has some great cards and stationary. I spent close to $70 on Mothers Day cards here and smiled at the cashier and said "hello"...no smile in return, she just asked "ready?'......I tried to make small talk and be pleasant and barely got any eye contact, let alone words besides the total. I would never go back here and haven't since. I would expect a little smile since I am spending $70 f^$%#*g dollars! read more

My gf and I walked in here after getting some coffee. I walked in and smiled and said hello to the older blonde woman at the counter, she looked at me and then looked away. The old man in the store watched me like a hawk making sure I don't steal anything. I mean what the f#^k do I want with a bunch of cards? Yeah I am going to steal them and sell them on the Hallmark black market? I was told to leave because I answered my cell. Apparently the place hates technology being that its main product is paper stationary. While I was out finishing my call my gf spent 50 bucks in the store and the woman at the counter wouldn't even say hello or even a thank you. I hope as technology gets better this place dies out like the dinosaurs because the fossils that work in there need to learn some manners. read more

Decent selection of items, but the staff tend to be rude. It is VERY pricey and they act as though you shouldn't be in there if you have to ask for a price. I only come here for very specific items, otherwise, I just order my stationary online where the selection and service is far better. read more

Yes it is pricey, but I still have to give this place five stars. Not only is the quality of the products amazing, the people who work there are extremely helpful. I was that obnoxious customer that changed her order multiple times, didn't know what she needed, had no idea what she was talking about... and still they treated me with patience and kindness. He explained things to me, voided my order, and let me make a new one, even though it would mean less money for them. I will recommend this place to anyone. read more

Just visiting and killing time, we shopped here today. I love stationary stores and this one had every thing one would want and then some. There was a great selection of cards, stationary and a few gifty things. In the back of the store there were office supplies. We got what we needed and while we were happy to see they had it, we paid about double what we would have paid at Staples. Sales people didn't hover but they were there when we needed them. read more

While I agree with the customer service gripes at this place, I have to admit I expect that of stores in Carmel. The whole city of Carmel is pretentious and so I prefer to not expect great customer service (if you are not wearing pearls, or don't look like you tote an AARP card). That being said, I like the variety of stationery they have here and it's not like there are many stationery stores around the Monterey area. read more
