Spencer's Boatyard is a hidden gem in Key West. We traveled to Key West last month and rented from Spencer's 2 days. The father and son of the family owned business are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The 23' Seafox we rented was a perfect boat for 5 adults. The son was eager to show us how to use the controls and GPS equipped on the boat. The front office staff was polite and professional. I as well, am not sure of all the negative reviews for Spencer's Boatyard. Boating in the Keys is not for the novice boaters. The staff is kind enough to provide you with a chart so you won't run aground. Furthermore, the boats do have GPS which state depths as well as chart plotters which show you where the vessel has previously traveled. Familiarize yourself with the waters/maps/charts/tides prior to heading out down there. Spencer's Boatyard, thank you for 2 enjoyable and hassle free days on the water last month. We will definitely be booking again with you on our trip down next year!

    Disrepair of boat rental

6 days ago To get a true picture of the character of Spencer's owners - read their rude responses to the reviews. Had we read these prior - we would not have rented. Boat needed many repairs. The depth finder didn't work and when we asked they said we wouldn't need it. Whether we needed it our not, it should work. The bilge was running for some unknown reason most of the day. SEE PICTURES! Two doors were broken and opened and crashed shut the entire day, cup holder had been ripped out and trim was popping out with exposed nails by the ladder where my daughter cut her hand on a rusty part climbing back into boat. We have rented boats many times all over the country and this was the first time we have ever had one in such bad shape. We found the workers to be very condescending and therefore we didn't mention any of the problems as we just wanted to pay and leave. All other experiences in Key West were above and beyond excellent. Sunset Watersports - parasail, waverunner ride, Sunset Sail Keywest Sailboat - HighTide, Fish Key West.

Easy in. Easy out. Good price. He gave us a little extra time since we showed up a little early. It was great. Good boat. Good instructions.

A couple weeks before our trip we reserved a center console from Boat Rentals of Key West for 8 hours. On the day of the rental we arrived at their office in the Marina at Downtown Key West. The staff was courteous and gave us all the needed instructions we would need for the day. The boat was clean, gassed up and ready to go. We had a blast exploring the area and reefs around Key West. The Boat performed and ran great. Me and my wife have rented boats before and never have we encountered a staff as professional and courteous as the people working at Boat Rentals of Key West and their boats are in very good condition and obviously well maintained. In the future, we will be back to Key West and we will only rent a boat from Boat Rentals of Key West. Thanks again for the great service. Our boat rental was the highlight of our key West trip.

I never leave bad reviews, but in this case it was absolutely necessary. - "Boat Rentals of Key West" is a broker, but does not disclose at time of booking. After making a deposit on phone, we were sent to pickup our boat at a place called "Paradise Boat Rentals" at Murray Marine on Stock Island. - We arrived at Paradise Boat Rentals at 1pm where final payment was charged. Upon which, the owner "Rocky" recommended he guide us through the narrow channels to main water. Very shallow area that surrounded the location. - When we hit open waters, Rocky waived us through and we were on our way. 35 minutes later, the boat broke down. From 1st contact, it took them 3 hours to come assist us. - By 5:15pm, we had everything swapped over to a replacement boat. We used this replacement boat to tow Rocky 45 minutes closer to KW (out of courtesy). - It was cloudy, windy and the water was very choppy that day, not to mention, we were in a flat bottom deck boat. It was extremely rough to say the least, and we still had to make it back to Murray on Stock Island. - By 6:45pm we could barely see. We realize at this time, the replacement boat has NO lights and NO navigation device. My wife calls Rocky on his cell, and explained we were about 500 yards from his marina, but needed an assist due to no lights or nav - it was not safe trying to navigate the narrow channels without someone experienced with such area. He begins screaming at her and accusing us of being intoxicated. I get on the phone and he begins cursing "I know what F...n games you are playing", "I'm not coming to help you", "Just wait until you get here and see who you are messing with", etc, etc. I explain to him that 3 of us on the boat, including driver had not taken 1 sip of alcohol that day. - At this point, due to the situation and the threats from Rocky, we pulled over to a bulk-headed area and called the local authorities. They agreed we should not drive the boat as it was very dangerous to do so without lights. They then helped return the boat and coordinated our vehicle pickup from Murray. At 9:30pm, we were finally returning to our hotel. - We are now going through the channels of dispute with our credit card company for right at $400 in charges (from both this broker and Paradise rentals)! Rant over. Proceed with caution.

The day we went, the waves were pretty choppy. I got in the water and panicked. Kelly, our guide, expertly made sure I got back to the boat. Spencer, our dive master, helped me up and reassured me the whole time. I got to spend the next couple hours hanging out with Spencer and robin (the captain), which honestly, was a great time. What I loved is how committed they were to safety, and also making me feel valid in my decision to abort the dives. My partner successfully completed two dives and had a fantastic experience with Kelly guiding him. If/when we're back in key west again for diving, we will definitely book with Lost Reef again!!

Lost Reef Adventures...the worst dive shop that I have encountered in 30 years of scuba diving…read more The negatives: The owner, Nick, was extremely unfriendly to the point of being hostile. He had a serious attitude problem and had no idea what the concept of "customer service" meant. He just stares at you, waiting for you to say something...it's really creepy. After telling us to show up at 7:00 for the morning dives, no one from the shop bothered to show up until 7:45. The crew was only okay. The dive master acted like this was an annoyance to be taking us out on a dive...like he just wanted to get this over and done with. He just swam around for 45 minutes until it was time to re-board. The boat pilot told us, "We're not leaving the dock until you get your gear ready." There was one guy (with a mullet and ear rings) that was pretty cool and very helpful. The equipment was fair, but had some issues. The first tank that I hooked up to only had 1200 psi, turns out that 1/4 of the tanks onboard had previously been used and not removed or refilled. The fact that they all had the rubber covers on the valve (indicating a fresh tank) made it very confusing as to which tank to use. My dive buddy's regulator was inoperable. The dives were fair at best. I guess Key West really isn't that great for sea life when compared to the USVI or Belize, buy the dive master didn't even bother to point out sea life. EVERY dive I've been on in 30 years had a dive master that took pride in his/her job and did their best to point out - things to see - during the dive. I told the travel office on the base at Sigsbee not to recommend them. There are vastly superior shops like Southpoint Divers and Captain's Corner that will give you a much more pleasant experience. I dove with Southpoint on all of my subsequent dives in Key West. The positives: The boat was great - lotsa space for everyone, safety equipment was plentiful, and the safety briefing was well done. As I mentioned before, one of the crew (lives in Roatan, Honduras and was visiting his daughter) was very helpful but unfortunately, he was the exception. The BCDs, masks, and fins were fine. There's not really anything else positive that came out of my experiences. Do yourself a favor and use one of the other dive shops in Key West.
