Richard Turner, Spencer Home Services. Rich had fixed complicated plumbing problems which several other plumbers were unable to resolve. Rich is a keen and sharp thinker, able to make a correct diagnosis and fix/solve the problems. He has the ability to cut the drywall to look for the source of the water leak behind it. He is skilled in plumbing work, fixing water leak in many ways. He did not stop until the wetness was completely gone. He was exceptionally thorough, testing every drain in all bathrooms to ensure that there were no other issues. When a separate leak was discovered during his evaluation, Rich stayed to take care of it immediately. He went to a supply store to get the necessary part, and finished the repair during the same visit. He was punctual, communicated well with his staff and client. After the work was completed, he swept the work area, picked up materials that were removed and took them away. We had a leaking garbage disposal and called Spencer Home Services, willing to pay their $89 assessment fee because of their 4.9-star rating. I even bought the replacement unit myself ($159.99), so all they had to do was install it. I got a text from 1-833-506-1246 at 8:26 AM that the tech was "on the way," but he didn't show until 9:30. When I joined the visit after my meeting, my family member shared that we were quoted $600 just for installation--or $900 if Spencer supplied the unit. No ballpark pricing was given beforehand, only "case by case." When I took a minute to check with a friend if the price made sense, the tech grew impatient and said, "I have other jobs to go to, so either decide now or just pay the $89 and don't fix it." We paid the $89 fee and hired another company instead, who did the exact same job for $195 total. The difference in price and professionalism was night and day. Spencer was not only overpriced--maybe justified by their policies--but also rude and disappointing. I would never use them again. read more

Team came out, spoke clearly and seemed knowledgeable and offered a free sewage camera scope job since the pipes were being opened up anyway. Gave a quick verbal estimate with a good price compared to the 3 other quotes I got, and was available to work on it right away. Estimated 4 hours of work and got the work done on time. I can't say enough good things about the experience I had with this company last week!! I lost my heat and hot water, and wasn't sure if it was repairable due to the age of my boiler. After the first HVAC guy from another company told me it wasn't fixable, I called 3 other companies to look at it to see if they could fix it - and to give me quotes in case I needed a new system. My SIL had highly recommended Spencer Home services to me, and I am SO glad I called them! The owner, Peter, squeezed me in between jobs in the evening, and he was the only HVAC guy who didn't immediately tell me that my boiler couldn't be repaired, or that I needed a whole new system (to the tune of $18-24k, as the other 3 companies quoted me). He said he'd send out one of his top guys the next day. Rich came out, and he was amazing!! He was SO methodical in checking out every inch of my boiler and hot water heater, and took the time to properly diagnose the problem. He got the boiler up and running again within the hour, and had to order a part for the hot water heater (which a different HVAC guy actually broke while checking it out). He came back the next day to install the new part, and everything has been running perfectly ever since! Spencer Home services not only fixed the problem that 3 other companies said wasn't fixable - they saved me $20k in the process!! Back in December I called and had someone come out to look at replacing my tub. Told me that he would need a few days to source out the materials needed. I gave him a week and a half before I called to follow up since it was around Christmas time. Was told by the person answering the phone that she would notify the rep and that he would be notified and contacting me. I didn't receive a call back at all that week. I tried again the next two weeks and was told the same thing and still never heard from the representative. I've used this company before for some other work and they were great. That's why I went back to using them, but this was not a pleasant experience for me. And here I am still looking around for this job to be done. read more

Woke up Sunday morning to a broken pipe with water pouring out into our guest bedroom above our garage. We called Spencer and Mark had someone come out to our house within about an hour. Michael, our plumber was great and quickly found which pipe broke and how to fix it. Gave us an estimate, which was very reasonable, and had the pipes repaired/replaced rather quickly. After replacing the pipes and turning the water back on in the house, he checked very room in the house to make sure there were no other leaks or problems before packing up and leaving. We just moved to Peabody and received info about this company in our welcome wagon packet. We wanted to have a bidet removed from our bathroom, and we're nervous about disconnecting water pipes on our own, so I called Spencer Home Services. Melissa was very kind scheduling on the phone and we did get an appointment first thing in the am as requested. The plumber was prompt and it took exactly 9 minutes for him to remove the bidet and properly reconnect the pipes...and charge us $285. I was told there would be a $89 assessment fee, which would be deducted from the price of the work done. It just seems totally outrageous to charge that much for such a small job for a new customer that could have potentially hired them again for other work.....we won't be calling again!! I am updating my past review of Spencer Home Services!! After reading my review, the owner of the company immediately reached out to apologize and let me know that we had been billed incorrectly. Sheila then contacted me with the correct bill amount and drove out to our house to return my original check and get an updated replacement. Mistakes obviously can happen, but we were really impressed by Spencer Company's quick response and correction of the problem....customer satisfaction is clearly a major factor for them!! I thought I had a routine clog in my drain but as I came to find out, the main sewer line out of my house was broken in 3 places and needed to be replaced. The first quote I received was ridiculously expensive and they wanted to put in a liner. Then I called Spencer. They came right out and explained to me that a liner is like a sock, it takes on the contours of the existing (broken) pipe, it has longevity issues, and is not a great idea. They suggested, "pipe bursting" for my particular job which did not require digging up my yard, could be done in a day, and was guaranteed for life and would be transferrable guaranteed if I sold my house in the future. The quote was not the most expensive and it wasn't the cheapest. The cheapest was from another company that wanted to dig up my front yard and my front walk (and take 2 days to do it!). The reason I went with Spencer is because of their years of experience in the business (38) and because the explanation of the work was straight-forward, 1-day, and guaranteed. Nobody else was willing to guarantee their work. Also, they didn't need to dig up the yard! I wanted to be sure, so I asked for a reference. The reference the found for me had the same exact issue and the same exact fix. He raved about the crew that came to do the job and the fact that they cleaned up at the end of the job. And it was done in one day. I signed up and Spencer fit me onto the schedule for an ASAP slot. My crew arrived early, around 7:15am and worked throughout the entire day until 4:30pm without taking any breaks that I could see. They came with a fleet of equipment that they needed to do the job. At the end of the day, the job was done beautifully and the crew was communicative, kind, and respectful. Keep in mind, this was all done during the COVID19 crisis! I'm incredibly grateful to Spencer for turning a crazy situation into a manageable one and for making me feel like a valued customer. I attached before and after photos so you can see what they did. We learned as we were selling our house that our 80-year-old water main needed to be replaced. We hired Spencer after they were recommended to us by our plumber. Peter was great to deal with - friendly, trustworthy, easy to get in touch with, and straightforward. The job itself only took a few hours, and barely involved digging up my lawn since they were able to pull a new line underground from my basement out to the street. Matt and his apprentice from Spencer Home Services came back to my home last week to resolve some long overdue deficiencies. As promised, they arrived at 8:00am sharp so I could go over what they intended to accomplish before beginning my workday. They did an excellent job! They were sure to finish all the necessary work and repairs within one business day (as promised). When they were done the pipes in the basement needing to be replaced were all set, the clogs and painfully slow drains in the bathroom sink and shower were completely eliminated, and the new efficient toilet and showerhead they installed are exactly what I was looking for. As I mentioned in my last review, strict COVID-19 guidelines were followed and the final cost of the job was exactly what I was originally quoted. Not a penny more. Great company and great people. Had water line replaced and tried their best to avoid all disruptions to my water service and to avoid having to dig up the yard. After multiple attempts they we able to pull the pipe with ease and not have to dig up the yard. When most companies would have given up they continued to try until they succeeded. Owner is very experienced and knowledgeable. He's not only concerned with the work being done right, but also makes sure it's done well. Workers are very dedicated. I contacted Spencer Contracting after finding their information on Angie's List. The job was to repair or replace a 100+ foot drain line from a Brookline condominium building which my company manages. The drain line is badly deteriorated and could stop working causing 12 units to be without plumbing facilities at any time. At first Peter was very friendly and I immediately liked the idea of working with him and his team. He seemed very knowledgeable and he gave us the approach that was the best long term solution, not some patch or job that we'll have to revisit in the future. After determining that we would have to dig through an easement to the Brookline water main which was on our neighbor's property line Peter agreed to meet with the owner of the neighboring building and I on site to review the scope. Our neighbor had several questions (all of which I would have asked myself if the situation was reversed) regarding set up, liability, how the property would be restored, etc. After meeting with Peter and our neighbor on a Monday I didn't hear anything back from them for over a week. I phoned a couple of more times only to find out from someone else in the company that they didn't want to dig on the neighbor's property any more and wouldn't be willing to do so. This was the following Wednesday, 9 days later. On Thursday I left a message for Peter, with no response. On Friday morning I called his cell phone when a colleague answered and said "he left his phone on the table but wasn't around" so I left a message with him. After a few hours I tried Peter back again. After reaching him, I asked why they decided they didn't want to dig on our neighbor's property when they told us this was the best option previously, and why it took them 2 weeks to let us know about it. His response: "was it 2 weeks? It wasn't 2 weeks. How would you like it if I told you we weren't going to do the work at all!" in a very aggressive tone. To which I replied "that's fine if that's how you would like to proceed, I just need to know" to which Peter hung up the phone. It is unfortunate that this process ended with poor communication and aggressive and unwarranted behavior. I was looking forward to having Spencer Contracting do this work until not hearing from them for several days and the extremely poor customer service. I would not recommend this company for any work. read more
