Nice atmosphere, and nice mix of locals and tourists. The staff was great. We loved the chorizo pasta, the sauce was particularly good. My salmon patties with wasabi sauce were good but not special.

Veggie patty with feta and pesto

This pub served a limited pub food menu: wings, burgers, fish, and only two salads (both of which come with meat). With low expectations, I ordered the veggie patty, and it was excellent! Truly one of the best veggie burgers I have ever had. Topped with melted feta and zesty pesto. Well done! However on the meat side, the Angus burger was overcooked. They do not ask you for the temperature that you want for your burger, so be warned! Thick fries, curly frisée side salad. Friendly service.

Speight's Ale House in Greymouth is conveniently located near the train station. This makes it possible to have a great meal during the time it takes to turn the train around if you are returning to Christchurch the same day. The food was very very good, the portions were generous, and the service was great! They allowed us to share a single meal which was plenty of food. The chicken dish was excellent. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. We were asked several times by several people whether everything was to our liking. Our only regret was that we didn't have room for one of their fine looking desserts. They have a full bar and it looks like it would be a fun place to spend a few hours in the evening.

Zaika Moroccan Grill & Bar - Wedges ($5.00 NZD)

After a long drive from Nelson, we arrived into sleepy Greymouth and immediately looked for a place…read moreto grab dinner. Not going to lie, there's not much choice. We settled on Zaika, a Moroccan restaurant. We dropped in on a Saturday evening (around 7:30pm) to a packed house. The inside has a strange layout; they don't make full use of their space very well. Service is friendly enough but they were running around and seemed to forget about us. Pay at the counter when you're done. The menu is split into starters, Zaika bowls, Zaika wraps, pita pocket, Zaika salad, kid's meals and a royal platter. The platter ($49.90 NZD) sounded tasty and a good way to share. - Wedges ($5.00 NZD) - this was actually a good portion size. Decent seasoning and most of the wedges were crispy. The sauce/aioli was neutral but tasteless. - Grilled fish Zaika bowl ($17.50 NZD) - we decided to share a bowl and asked for half Arabic rice and half couscous. For the salads, we picked corn salsa, grilled vege and carrots & beet. Sauce was hummus but it was different than what we expected. They mixed it in with the rest of the ingredients. We also got our bowl medium spicy but it was only in the tiniest manner. Fish was perfectly grilled but it was soooooo salty. Sad because it ruined the flavours. Everything else was tasty and nutritious. Try the lamb instead (our second choice).

Very tasty, affordable food and friendly staff. Looked at their website and got the impression this…read morewas a very upscale (and probably expensive) place. It was not. Quite casual and quite comfortable. They have ample seating and I believe do a good bit of take-out business. Several beers on tap and a pretty good wine selection. Just passing through town, but if I lived here I'd be a regular!

There is a sign on the outside of the Union Hotel to indicate price ranges, but as it turns out its actually cheaper than that sign indicates. The building is an old style hotel. You enter first to the bar area. Keep walking and you enter the carvery. I would describe it was a no nonsense old fashioned comfort food spot. The menu is on the wall above a counter where they take your order. They have roasts (generally beef), lamb, fish, and schnitzel with 2 prices for smaller (about $15) and regular portion sizes. For some reason under their lighter meals, they have pork chops. Anyway, read the whole thing before deciding. Hot soup, vegetable with rice the day we were there, comes with getting a meal $15 NZ or more. You get a choice of vegetables or salad and chips. We ordered smaller portions of fish with veg and beef roast with veg. You're given a numbered order tag. You are to watch for your number to come up. Then you go pick up your meal. You get drinks back out at the bar. Pick up your silverware and napkins on the way to your table. Our meals arrived and they were just the right portion size for us. The veg consisted of steamed carrots, corn, and cabbage and a hunk of roasted kabocha squash. It was a nice change from chips. The fish was fried flavorful firm white fish. The beef was tender with a nice gravy. It was obvious that this was a local place. There were families with children eating there that greeted friends. There were young travelers that were staying at the hostel and eating inexpensively there. It's just good food served simply without frills. There is dessert. Their dessert board listed cheesecake, pavlova, fresh boysenberries with cream, and ice cream. We went for ice cream. A scoop of Tip Top ice cream topped with a big dollop of fresh homemade whipped cream cost a whopping $1 NZ. That is the best deal EVER. If they have boysenberry ice cream, get it. It is delicious. The serving ladies said they are open 7 days for lunch and dinner.
