This was well worth the 6.5 hour trek from Christchurch over Easter Weekend. Having sampled some…read morebeers at the Great Kiwi Beerfest, we decided we had to get up to the restaurant itself to try some other beers. Located just off the main road to Onekaka, The Mussel Inn is a great local haunt that is regailed for it's beer and offers a great family feel with a large outdoor gathering space with picnic tables, a giant tire swing and a firepit. There is some indoor seating, but the real experience is outside. There are about 5-6 beer options on tab and other specialty beers by the bottle. My favorite is the Captain Cooker Manuka Beer, but the Super Swine (hoppy manuka beer) was great too. My husband tried their chilli beer, but it is only available by the bottle at the restaurant. They are known for their pies, and I regret not trying one. We ordered small nachos (a blossom of nacho chips stuck into a bean/sour cream/salsa/cheese mix) garlic bread (a large rosemary? foccaia loaf with a generous portion of chopped garlic, the bacon burger (don't be fooled, this burger is all bacon and no beef) with lettuce, a light and fruity salsa and aioli servce on the garlic bread and green-lipped mussels. My husband says they're the best mussels he's had in NZ. I wasn't so impressed with the open-faced burger and ended up eating each piece separately (as it was extremely messy and over-bearing). The flavors were great once eaten by themselves! We had an extra beer over dessert, but their pavlova looked appetizing. Be sure to stay through dusk as they light the fire pit, which is a great place to cuddle up to someone, or just sit and enjoy a beer. Arrive before 6 to beat the local crowd and secure a table outdoors as well as parking in their very small lot. When we left, cars were lined up down the side of the highway.

My Kiwi boyfriend and I have been touring the South Island for the past few weeks and ended up here in the very small town of Westport. After driving through torrential rains up the western side of the island for the past few days, we were looking for a respite. I always mentally scoff when I read that any restaurant outside of the NY/NJ area advertises itself as having authentic Italian food. But this small and unassuming place did just that. And I was craving some pasta after a steady diet of fish and chips, lamb and whitebait. We walked in and were immediately seated by the bar and had our drink orders taken, which arrived very quickly. I opted for the special, the spaghetti bolognese, while Boyfriend chose the Chicken Piccata. Let me tell you it was probably the best Bolognese I've had in my entire life. An extremely generous portion, accompanied by a yummy little palate-cleansing side salad, which I also devoured. Boyfriend was very happy with his dish as well, and we were both members of the "Clean Plate Club!!" I raved about the food to our very kind waiters/bartenders, and they said they would pass the compliments on to the chef. Who knew that on the wet, wild, western side of the South Island of New Zealand that you can get actual delicious Italian and Italian-inspired food in a tiny one-horse town?? I have been humbled. And my tummy is still full. And I'm still happy. Burp. Go there. And tell 'em Jenny from the Block sent ya.

Absolutely the most dreadful dining experience during our stay so far on the South Island . Upon…read moredelivering our meals the host was so pleased with the presentation she thought we might want to take a photo before eating which we politely declined. As far as the food I can only say don't bother the lamb rump was ordered & corrected twice with the waitress to be cooked medium well it literally was not even cooked barely raw. They offered to cook to medium well but was told it would take longer which we said yes. As for my partners mystery fish of the day (we were never told species) a complete disaster under cooked & clearly not fresh as advertised with a combination of sauces which even individually were of poor quality let alone combined. It gets better while waiting for my lamb my partner waited for my dish to arrive but we decided instead to start eating OMG . During this time I observed my lamb going into the microwave at this point we decided enough of this nonsense & asked for our bill for our drinks & to forget about dinner they actually waffled at first about paying for our dinner. They were actually asking us what was wrong with their food in detail how about everything they really could use chefs Gordon Ramsey or Bob Irvine from kitchen nightmares or restaurant impossible to solve their issues. Hanmer Springs locals recommend the place but warned of new owners. As it was later by then out of desperation we had pizza down the street @ Irish bar as most everywhere was closed.

I ordered the angus beef steak and it was very delicious (one of the best I've tried). If you're in a mood for a good steak, I'd order this. I don't drink alcohol but there's a wide variety of alcoholic drinks including wine. I ordered the lemonade raspberry and it was good. The portion size they serve here calls for a dessert afterwards and we got the rich double chocolate fondant. We strongly recommend it if you like the mixture of a nice cold ice cream with steaming hot fudge fresh out of the oven. We loved it.

I wish I could give this Cafe 5 stars but the service experience we had was a 0, if Yelp will give…read moreit to me at that. What we experienced was racism against Asians. We sat down and asked for water, to which our waitress commented that we can pour the water ourselves, pointing to a container and some glasses on a table next to us. Meanwhile the table who sat in front of us and every single table who sat after us (4 tables in total) were served cold bottles of water and glasses. Nobody else had to fetch their own. And when I spoke to the waitress at the end of our meal she apologized, but gave some excuses: -the self serving containers were meant for everyone -that the table who sat before us got water because they made a reservation -the tables who sat after us (literally 5 minutes after us) received water because "it started to get hot" She told me not to take it personal. I do not accept your apology because this was not a mistake you made, its intentional. You targeted us because we are Asian. I thought back on it and maybe it was because of our age - but it's not because the couple who came right after us was definitely younger. Shame on you and Bay House Cafe. Hopefully this review will make you all more self-conscious of how you should treat each customer fairly - not just ones with reservations and not ones who come after 11:12 when it's "hot".
