Entrees are pre-made and reheated for serving, nothing is freshly made. A total disappointment and a waste of money.

Zaika Moroccan Grill & Bar - Wedges ($5.00 NZD)

After a long drive from Nelson, we arrived into sleepy Greymouth and immediately looked for a place…read moreto grab dinner. Not going to lie, there's not much choice. We settled on Zaika, a Moroccan restaurant. We dropped in on a Saturday evening (around 7:30pm) to a packed house. The inside has a strange layout; they don't make full use of their space very well. Service is friendly enough but they were running around and seemed to forget about us. Pay at the counter when you're done. The menu is split into starters, Zaika bowls, Zaika wraps, pita pocket, Zaika salad, kid's meals and a royal platter. The platter ($49.90 NZD) sounded tasty and a good way to share. - Wedges ($5.00 NZD) - this was actually a good portion size. Decent seasoning and most of the wedges were crispy. The sauce/aioli was neutral but tasteless. - Grilled fish Zaika bowl ($17.50 NZD) - we decided to share a bowl and asked for half Arabic rice and half couscous. For the salads, we picked corn salsa, grilled vege and carrots & beet. Sauce was hummus but it was different than what we expected. They mixed it in with the rest of the ingredients. We also got our bowl medium spicy but it was only in the tiniest manner. Fish was perfectly grilled but it was soooooo salty. Sad because it ruined the flavours. Everything else was tasty and nutritious. Try the lamb instead (our second choice).

Very tasty, affordable food and friendly staff. Looked at their website and got the impression this…read morewas a very upscale (and probably expensive) place. It was not. Quite casual and quite comfortable. They have ample seating and I believe do a good bit of take-out business. Several beers on tap and a pretty good wine selection. Just passing through town, but if I lived here I'd be a regular!

There is a sign on the outside of the Union Hotel to indicate price ranges, but as it turns out its actually cheaper than that sign indicates. The building is an old style hotel. You enter first to the bar area. Keep walking and you enter the carvery. I would describe it was a no nonsense old fashioned comfort food spot. The menu is on the wall above a counter where they take your order. They have roasts (generally beef), lamb, fish, and schnitzel with 2 prices for smaller (about $15) and regular portion sizes. For some reason under their lighter meals, they have pork chops. Anyway, read the whole thing before deciding. Hot soup, vegetable with rice the day we were there, comes with getting a meal $15 NZ or more. You get a choice of vegetables or salad and chips. We ordered smaller portions of fish with veg and beef roast with veg. You're given a numbered order tag. You are to watch for your number to come up. Then you go pick up your meal. You get drinks back out at the bar. Pick up your silverware and napkins on the way to your table. Our meals arrived and they were just the right portion size for us. The veg consisted of steamed carrots, corn, and cabbage and a hunk of roasted kabocha squash. It was a nice change from chips. The fish was fried flavorful firm white fish. The beef was tender with a nice gravy. It was obvious that this was a local place. There were families with children eating there that greeted friends. There were young travelers that were staying at the hostel and eating inexpensively there. It's just good food served simply without frills. There is dessert. Their dessert board listed cheesecake, pavlova, fresh boysenberries with cream, and ice cream. We went for ice cream. A scoop of Tip Top ice cream topped with a big dollop of fresh homemade whipped cream cost a whopping $1 NZ. That is the best deal EVER. If they have boysenberry ice cream, get it. It is delicious. The serving ladies said they are open 7 days for lunch and dinner.

Very nice restaurant up above Hokitika a bit. Seems to be off the beaten path, given that it's not…read morein Yelp (until I wrote this review) and is also outside of the city proper. We we advised to visit by the owner of our Airbnb, and we made reservations (that didn't seem necessary, it was just us and one other party) before visiting. Your mileage may vary on reservations. Their menu is small - only about 5 mains. They have quite a few accolades on their website regarding their beef and lamb offerings, so I went with the lamb fillets, which were three smaller pieces of lamb, ordered medium rare, rubbed with some middle eastern spices and served over some greens and cumin infused feta. The lamb was good - although came out borderline cool in the center, more rare than medium rare (although this was fine with me). Good although mild flavor, and I liked the spice rub. The salad was a little boring - there wasn't a ton of feta, but it was a nice accompaniment. There was also a little mashed potato croquette thing - a nice little crust on it, quite tasty. We also ordered a side of the cucumber fennel salad, which was exceptionally boring. Needed salt, vinegar, something, anything to bring out a little flavor. There was also very little fennel - I was imagining sliced or cubed fennel bulb, but it was really just fennel greens. But all in all, quite tasty meal. Others had the filo chicken - sort of a chicken roll with bacon, peppers, cream cheese, and almonds, wrapped in filo dough. This was really excellent, tender and moist, good balance of flavors, with a great kind of yogurt dressing. The location is pretty picturesque - not quite overlooking the ocean, but the sunset was really lovely on a nice weather day. The hotel/restaurant are set on some almost pasture land, with a scenic little water wheel...just kind of an idyllic setting. I would recommend this to anyone in the area looking for a little nicer meal than some of the spots in town (not that there's anything really wrong with what I had from restaurants in town).
