How should I describe this place... Quaint? Popular local joint. Old fashioned and homey. The place- on the main street amongst all the shops. Ample seating. Two and four seaters. Generally clean. The food- good breakfast menu. Good serving portions. Lots of fried stuff... The lambs fry caught my eyes straight away, despite the owners warning I went with it and really glad about the choice. Well seasoned, juicy, very tasty. The drinks- usual stuff on the menu, coffee and shakes. Not sure this is the place for a latte. The milk shake I got was not very remarkable. Service- generally friendly... But you know the westcoasters... A special bunch. Overall a nice little cafe, descent food, not sure if it will shine in other larger cities? But worth a try if you are in the region.

Go past the other, better known cafe in town and head just past it, up the old oak stair case to where Freddy's is located. You'll be greeted warmly at the top of the stairs and told to sit anywhere. They are used to those trying to grab food before catching the train so if you are in a hurry- they have already prepared items in the case on the counter, or they will suggest what on their regular menu can be gotten quickly. I had plenty of time but ordered one of the "fast dishes" and a cup of tea. In my instance, it was a bowl of seafood chowder and a slice of garlic bread. Quite tasty, warm and fresh, perfect to tide me over until dinner time. Other items on the menu include sandwiches, freshly prepared coffees and pastries, specials and soups of the day and more. It was a great suggestion to eat here and the prices are reasonable too. And the ambiance, while no frills, offers plenty of space to enjoy your food. You may want to grab a table at the windows and people watch as I did . . .very interesting the people who come through this little town! So the next time you are in Greymouth and looking for a great place to grab a bite, be sure to look up. Freddy's will be there waiting for you!

Has a mixture of two and four sweaters as well as a couch for you too relax. The food- has an extensive menu. The good I got was pretty average. Ordered the open Chicken and bacon sammy special. The bread was tough. The chicken was actually tender but not too much flavor. The whole sandwich was a saturated by the time it got to me. Nothing remarkable about the chips. The drinks- standard stuff. Have to say their flatwhite was very well made. Could do with some healthier shakes or fresh juice on the menu. The service- generally friendly, but seem overwhelm at times. Really wanting to give them a higher score, but they are the food does not quite match up with the food. No free internet, but a handy place to catch up with people if you don't want to go to the chain store coffee shop downstairs.

Despite this…read more-- and the inclusion of a seemingly delightful brewery tour through their expansive brewery area with many a shiny stainless steel tank -- they apparently don't even brew on-site anymore. Regardless, it's a strategically located lunch spot on ones way down the rugged, tempestuous West Coast. They were shamelessly open on Good Friday, but with the 15% surcharge in full effect, of course. We ordered a tasting flight of 3 beers (200mL's at 20 NZD) and some small bites. The Driftin IPA and West Coastin' IPA were solid with familiar hops (some American) though the Wayfarer Pilsner's crispness sums up my new appreciation for NZ pilsners. For food, we had the fried Calamari and the Venison sliders, the latter being quite yummy, the toasted up brioche buns and venison medallions smothered in chili jam and aioli making for an enjoyable mix of sweet and salty. Seating was super comfortable in the truly massive restaurant. Many a friendly worker to service you on your lunch stopover.

If you need anything you have to go to the bar to get it. They do not have servers walking around. We orders a couple of Local lady's and a prawn appetizer. For the mains we ordered Fish and Chips and the Warm Thai Chicken Salad. The salad had great texture but the mayo and avocado was really bland. Perhaps ordering a different dressing would help. Other than that we enjoyed our food. We talk to locals that were sitting at our table. It was great!
