We went here for an after work meal and everyone seemed pretty pleased. I had the Fish of the Day special which was delicious. The ratatouille and the risotto on the side didn't exactly bowl me over but it was all tasty enough. The service was slow enough but I can't imagine they have a group as big as our's regularly. Far from the best Italian food I've had but it's decent enough and offers all of the favourites on the menu. I'll return to try some of those to see if it improves my rating. Worth a shot for a night out in Greymouth anyway.

Go past the other, better known cafe in town and head just past it, up the old oak stair case to where Freddy's is located. You'll be greeted warmly at the top of the stairs and told to sit anywhere. They are used to those trying to grab food before catching the train so if you are in a hurry- they have already prepared items in the case on the counter, or they will suggest what on their regular menu can be gotten quickly. I had plenty of time but ordered one of the "fast dishes" and a cup of tea. In my instance, it was a bowl of seafood chowder and a slice of garlic bread. Quite tasty, warm and fresh, perfect to tide me over until dinner time. Other items on the menu include sandwiches, freshly prepared coffees and pastries, specials and soups of the day and more. It was a great suggestion to eat here and the prices are reasonable too. And the ambiance, while no frills, offers plenty of space to enjoy your food. You may want to grab a table at the windows and people watch as I did . . .very interesting the people who come through this little town! Has a mixture of two and four sweaters as well as a couch for you too relax. The food- has an extensive menu. The good I got was pretty average. Ordered the open Chicken and bacon sammy special. The bread was tough. The chicken was actually tender but not too much flavor. The whole sandwich was a saturated by the time it got to me. Nothing remarkable about the chips. The drinks- standard stuff. Have to say their flatwhite was very well made. Could do with some healthier shakes or fresh juice on the menu. The service- generally friendly, but seem overwhelm at times. Really wanting to give them a higher score, but they are the food does not quite match up with the food. No free internet, but a handy place to catch up with people if you don't want to go to the chain store coffee shop downstairs.

They sell milkshakes, frappes, smoothies, coffee, tea, pies, and an assortment of breakfast and lunch foods. I ordered the omelette. You can only choose to have two items inside for the $14 price. It is $2.50 for each additional item. I got ham and tomatoes inside my omelette. It came with two pieces of toast. It was warm, delicious and filling.

The seasoned fries that came with it were decent, but the dish needed more work for the price of $24. I ordered the "fish of the day", which just ended up being fish and chips. The fish was dry and not flakey. It was not satisfying at all and needed to be drowned in lemon juice and tartar sauce. Skip this place if you're just passing through.

But spending a night in Hokitika and finding a local favorite led me to this place. We came on Christmas Eve about an hour before closing and we just made it in time to get the sandwiches we wanted because shortly after they were sold out of most items. I usually go with what catches my eye first because it's directly connected to my stomach. So the coaster sandwich it was. Fried eggs (runny yolk), prosciutto, aged cheddar, west coast butter, aioli, black pepper, greens. Just as as I was typing that my stomach and eyes were both crying because I couldn't have one and grumbling because it was hungry. We took that sandwich towards the beach and sat in front of the driftwood signs and it was a great place to have our lunch. By far, this was one of those biggest surprises that I had in New Zealand because I never expected to enjoy a sandwich as much as I did, but everything that they had here with the fresh local ingredients and fantastic meats and cheeses, created a fanboy for these sandwiches.

We we advised to visit by the owner of our Airbnb, and we made reservations (that didn't seem necessary, it was just us and one other party) before visiting. Your mileage may vary on reservations. Their menu is small - only about 5 mains. They have quite a few accolades on their website regarding their beef and lamb offerings, so I went with the lamb fillets, which were three smaller pieces of lamb, ordered medium rare, rubbed with some middle eastern spices and served over some greens and cumin infused feta. The lamb was good - although came out borderline cool in the center, more rare than medium rare (although this was fine with me). Good although mild flavor, and I liked the spice rub. The salad was a little boring - there wasn't a ton of feta, but it was a nice accompaniment. There was also a little mashed potato croquette thing - a nice little crust on it, quite tasty. We also ordered a side of the cucumber fennel salad, which was exceptionally boring. Needed salt, vinegar, something, anything to bring out a little flavor. There was also very little fennel - I was imagining sliced or cubed fennel bulb, but it was really just fennel greens. But all in all, quite tasty meal. Others had the filo chicken - sort of a chicken roll with bacon, peppers, cream cheese, and almonds, wrapped in filo dough. This was really excellent, tender and moist, good balance of flavors, with a great kind of yogurt dressing. The location is pretty picturesque - not quite overlooking the ocean, but the sunset was really lovely on a nice weather day. The hotel/restaurant are set on some almost pasture land, with a scenic little water wheel...just kind of an idyllic setting. I would recommend this to anyone in the area looking for a little nicer meal than some of the spots in town (not that there's anything really wrong with what I had from restaurants in town).
