Great place for breakfast specially if you want to eat early, they open at 7:30am daily. It's a counter service. They have few items in the menu but I'm betting all of them taste great based on the two dishes we ordered. I went with the homemade beans and added two poached eggs. The combination of the beans, the sauce and the eggs went really well together and the portion of food is good too. My wife went with poached eggs and mushrooms their style. Instead of bread they had the eggs over potatoes. It was also delicious. I would highly recommend this place for breakfast. read more

So there aren't too many places to eat at when in Hokitika but this was definitely a good one and a great pit stop for those travelling down to Franz Josef or coming from Punakaiki. The service was really friendly and they had really good 80's music going which was compelling if you are simply following your ear (and not your nose). But of course you are coming in to eat and the food was very reasonable. I however wasn't a huge cheese fan so I couldn't appreciate that part of the menu. Good vibes Stella - keep it up! read more

Located on one of the main streets parallel to the Hokitika beach front. Plenty of street parking. Open early. Salmon eggs bennie on potato cake - what a great idea!! Especially since most places can't get their bread/English muffin right anyways and this is a bit more filling so your breakfast lasts longer. The salmon was fresh and delicious. The poached eggs were PERFECTION. Good amount of sauce and I just can't get enough of it. Orange almond cake with cream (you get a choice of either having it with cream or yogurt). I love it. I love it. I love it!!! So. Damn. Good. Just the perfect amount of orange and you can taste a bit of almond here and there. The cake was fluffy and moist. My mouth waters just thinking about it. Le sigh. Why are you so far *major sadface I also ordered their latte and asked them if they could add honey to it since they make the honey in-house I just wanted to give it a try. Oh my goodness it was the best decision ever. The latte was creamy and just the right amount of honey. They put the Hokitika gold in and I went home with a big jar of it after. Raspberry white chocolate muffin: 5 stars. So delicious and moist. I don't usually like white chocolate, but it added a nice gooey moisture to the muffin. Cinnamon scroll: 4 stars. The crunchy cinnamon butter bits are soooo good but were distributed a little unevenly so that some of the scroll was plain and almost flavorless, whereas the other parts were bomb diggity good. Chocolate biscuit bar: this thing has so much coconut in it!!!!!! Ugh!!! The coconut was not mentioned to me or written on the label, and it wasn't really visible upon inspection either. Coconut is very polarizing, so I feel that it's one of those ingredients that should be mentioned. It was delicious except for all the coconut that I had to spit out every 3 seconds. I forgot what flavor of scone we got, but it was pretty good as well. read more

The cafe is a cute and comfortable place to relax, but they don't have any salads or healthy food options that are affordable. If I wanted to spend $20 on a meal, I'd go to an actual restaurant! Unfortunately I couldn't find anything to eat, so I went elsewhere. read more

The atmosphere at this cafe is cute and the coffee was good however the service I received destroyed the experience. There was a small mix up with our coffee and what should have been an easy fix turned Into a huge ordeal. We order toast with a poached egg on top ($10) and because the poached egg was over cooked my friend politely asked for a new one. He received attitude and was brought a new dish. In summary I would not return to this establishment unless I was getting my coffee to go. (The girl at the register was very friendly but the older woman, who I assume is the owner or manager was VERY rude) read more

If I lived in Hokitiki, I imagine I would get up in the mornings, grab the newspaper, and make my way down to eat at Stella Cafe & Cheesery, everyday. This place is a great breakfast establishment that must be experienced. From the coffee, to the cheese, to the premade sandwiches and the plated breakfast food, everything was delicious. We had already ordered enough breakfast, but by the time we finished our food, we were contemplating about putting another order in. Just be warned, if I recall, it was a seat-yourself establishment, so try to nab a seat quickly, if you can, because this place gets packed in the mornings.
