Just updating this to say I kept the 2008 Outback and also bought a late model Outback. Have to say, the 2008 looks cooler (smaller, more streamlined) and handles more nimbly, more like a car instead of a truck. And there are less computer sensors and electronic doo dads to worry about. This is the mechanic that you need to be going to - especially if you own a Subaru. I do, and they've changed my life (as it relates to cars anyway) In a nutshell, they fit you in, they figure out what is wrong, they go out of their way to explain it to you in a completely understandable way, and they are sensitive to budget issues yet firm on safety. Every time I have them fix something, it's fixed. No issues, no second visits, no excuses. Just what you want in a mechanic. The receptionist/admin there is VERY knowledgeable about cars (though I don't think she is a mechanic) and is friendly and kind. Prices are very competitive and you feel like you've done the right thing for your car when you leave. You certainly will leave smarter than you did when you came in because they are happy to talk about Subarus all day long. Nice folks. Their building is kind of way in the back of a parking lot so its a bit of a weird approach. Also, parking there can be confusing but they are so nice and laid back it doesn't matter what you do. Just park and they'll help you out without the kind of attitude you might get somewhere else. read more

I brought an older Subaru in for a pre-purchase inspection and was pretty disappointed with the process and outcome. My biggest complaint is that they missed several items, including one I asked them to focus on. They missed the piston slap (the noise I was concerned about), a leaky lower control arm bushing, a broken wheel stud, and a broken/collapsed spring seat. I am also disappointed with certain aspects of the process. Regarding the piston slap, when I asked at the end of their assessment about the engine noise, they said they did not hear an engine noise, but did hear a transmission noise. This issue could have been addressed if they had invited me to join them on their test drive or even at the end, said something like lets go listen together to what you are concerned about. They did neither. (another shop I am using now confirmed the piston slap) The leaky lower control arm bushing was very apparent, and I just don't understand how they could have missed it. If they had removed the wheels to get a better look, they would have discovered the broken stud. I am surprised that an hour long inspection did not include removing the wheels to get a better look at the brakes (and they also would have seen and noted the rotted rear disk brake backing plates) When I brought the collapsed spring perch to their attention, their only response was that they did not see it. I had really expected that they would at least say something like "lets go look at what you are concerned about". I suspect they generally do good work, based on the other reviews, and I can confirm that they are very pleasant to deal with, but I was disappointed with the caliber of their inspection. I was also disappointed that they did not invite me to join them for at least part of the inspection so they could point things out to me and give me a chance to ask my questions in the presence of the car. read more

Subarus require expensive and inconvenient repairs as they approach and go over 100,000 miles. Timing Belts & Head Gaskets in particular. They've taken care of both for me as well as the standard oil changes and breaks, without an issues. Done on time and budget. An honest subaru mechanic who stands by their work would not hesitate to take my car there. read more

I am only giving four starts simply because I haven't actually experienced them working on my car. But i came in with a broken side mirror and after quoting me a ridiculous price for a brand new one, not including paint and labor, Dave told me he'd call around to some junk yards and see if he could find something. After about a week he called me back to say he found a mirror off of the same car and even the same color for half the price!! He definitely went out of his way and on top of that sold me the part and let me install it myself. I will return should I need more parts or service and will update my review when that happens. Bob, Dave & Cheryl are the best. I have been giving my Subies to them for over 10 years. I my 98 forester has over 220K. It is still running. A large part of that is these guys. When I decided to get another new to me car, I kept coming back to Speen Auto. I can trust them. No kidding. How many other auto jockeys can you say that about?!!! I heard mixed reviews about Speen Street Auto from other Subaru owners, but after reading positive reviews here, I thought I'd give it a try. Unfortunately, the guy I spoke with was unwilling to work on a WRX for a fair price and made disparaging and rude comments when I explained that the prices they were quoting were about 30% more than what the dealership quoted. We are a two-Subaru family with older generation Subies (needing lots of upcoming work) and would love to have a local mechanic, so we were incredibly disappointed at the attitude we encountered. Sounds like they don't need the business, so we're happy to take it elsewhere or make the hike out to our long-time mechanic in Medford. read more

I am a single woman, so very used to the generalization that my "group" routinely gets ripped off by auto repair shops . . . NOT at this auto repair shop! The folks here are friendly, honest, and fair. I was given the tip to try them out after another in a series of horrendous experiences at the Subaru dealership down the road. Absolutely disenfranchised, arrogant if questioned and disinterested in any auto instpection for the Herb Chambers, Automax or other "five day return policy on car purchases". This guy probably whined busting a fingernail with my SUV which I brought to him for a Subie inspection..he missed a rusting windshield cowl frame, which could have fallen on my daughter while driving, and moreover was H.Chambers at work selling a car without fixing something they knew about, and shouldn't have sold used OR new. All this guy did was write "creampuff" and took $100. He's a lot of experienced talk about fixing Sub's on the phone-perhaps he was once working with a Sub shop..or a sub shop! He acted like he wanted to punch me when I pointed out a small pinhole in window tinting film that wasn't there when I brought the car in (I had to remove the entire banner myself)! Worst is the fact that this guy acts like he's somehow doing you a favor by even talking to you-his sec'y (wife?) gives good lip service to him. Dirty old cars abound outside, a fair indication of what market he's seeking, aka old Fuji rustbuckets who he fixes for last leg, desperate owners who can't afford the moo-kaka from Subaru of Natick, for example. His being cheap might be good if you're lucky with his other mechanics, but it shouldn't mean putting up with cheap, self-servicing tactics. AVOID THIS ONE LIKE THE PLAGUE, dump your ol' Subaru in the dump before asking anything serious of this guy, other than lunch (which if you take anything from this to heart, will be "on you")! read more

I have been taking my Subaru to Speen Street for several years. Every time, they have been honest, accurate, fair, friendly, and thorough. They NEVER try to sell me anything the car doesn't actually need. Most recently, my local Subaru dealer told me I needed several major repairs. I brought the car to Speen Street, and they confirmed that one of the repairs was needed, but the other two were not. Where the dealer claimed to see leaks (steering rack, transmission), Speen Street took the time to diagnose that the "leaks" were in fact oil dripping on those parts from somewhere else. They saved me about $2,000. Here's another indication of the quality of these mechanics: I got a loaner car from them - it is a 1997 Outback with -- I kid you not -- 253,000 miles on the odometer. It looks kind of beat up, but it runs like new! Whereas i often feel like I am "at the mercy" of the dealership, I feel like the folks at Speen Street are trusted partners with me in keeping my Subaru running strong for the long haul. As long as I own Subaru vehicles, Speen Street will be my mechanic. read more

I figured that I would have wrote a review on these guys by now, but maybe subconsciously I had not for fear they would become even more popular than they already are. After taking my car to dealers for years, I got fed up with the price tag with the last straw being an almost $100 bill for a cabin air filter. Click and Clack to the rescue with the listing of Speen Street on their website. Since my first visit, I could not be happier. Cheryl happily greets you and explains the cost associated with the charges as well as alternatives if the price is too much you want to spend at that time. Bob, Dave and staff know their stuff and are quick to diagnose issues with your car often times much simpler and cheaper than you were afraid to expect. They offer loaners for those longer repairs and have after hours drop off so you are not scrambling for a ride in the middle of the day. These guys have been so awesome that I am afraid to venture away from Subaru for my next car for fear of losing them. read more

I've been driving a Subaru for about four years now, and I moved to the area from NH in the last year. I tried taking my car into the Subaru dealer/repair shop in Natick, and they were terrible - bad service, bad attitude, very expensive. I wasn't sure where to bring my car anymore, and didn't want to drive all the way to NH just for a tune-up. I saw the other praises on Yelp for Speen St Automotive, and figured I'd give it a try. I was thrilled with their customer service - friendly, helpful and I got an appointment immediately. They did great work on my SUV, and it was very reasonably priced. Plus, no upsale, which was lovely - I've grown really tired of dealerships trying to sell you more expensive repairs or services when you really don't need them.
