Incredibly bummed, especially seeing all the positive press around the quality and the sourcing…read morethey claim to approach business with, that quite a lot of the food being served was from SYSCO or another large similar restaurant supply vendor, ordered by the case and baked from frozen. Now first off, don't get me wrong, buying in bulk or sacrificing the quality of some ingredients to large suppliers like this is definitely a reality when running a restaurant. Even moreso in this day and age when ingredient prices are exorbitant. That said, it needs to be reflected in the price point. Pastries are arranged beautifully under cloches in the display case, but I could spot the premade, ready-to-bake spinach feta bistro (https://www.chefswarehouse.com/products/QZ119984/) or ham and cheese croissant (https://www.chefswarehouse.com/products/99971/) from a mile away. The avocado spread on the preassembled breakfast sandwiches is definitely the pulp from the 3lb bag from Chef's Warehouse too. I know that taste! All of that said, they had a few items in the case that I'm sure weren't from one of these big vendors. Which was great to see. My (yes, unsolicited!) advice would be to pare down the menu. Offer just a bit less so you can focus on the quality. Try and tap into some local producers if you can! That's one of the best things about the Hudson Valley... how much all the purveyors and markets and cafes support each other. It's clear too how much they care about the community. They're dog friendly inside. No WiFi to encourage people to chat with one another. Fine. I really want to see this place continue to thrive, it's just a bit of a bummer that a significant part of the menu including things that really should be fresh, aren't.

My family felt a bagel would make a great mid-morning breakfast/early lunch option, so we gave Hudson Bagels a try. Each of us was quite pleased with our experience! The fella that greeted us upon entering was nice and helpful in guiding our selections. The bagels were fresh and as good as any NYC bagel I have ever eaten. My family and I couldn't have been happier with our visit. The only downside was the limited amount of indoor seating available, but that's not a complaint--rather, just something to know if you're planning of stopping in for a bagel. If the weather is cold, the outdoor seating isn't likely an option. I highly recommend Hudson Bagels! If I ever make it back to Hudson, I'll visit this shop again! :-)

One thing I noticed about these bagels is that there's a lot of seasoning on them. All the bagels in the display seemed heavily seasoned--whether it was everything, garlic, onion, or whatever, they were covered in it. The bagel itself wasn't bad. I've had worse down in the city, so I was pleasantly surprised. Not as much chew as I'd like, but still tasty.

Some spaces to sit inside and a few small tables outside. Lots of pastries I wanted to try. There's a mini shelf of books you can buy up front. Seems like a cute place to meet up with people.

Ate a quick breakfast at The Athens Rooster this weekend (01/13/2024)…read more Cockadoodledoo! This out of the way corner cafe in Upstate Athens is very homey, open, clean, welcoming and has lots of off beat offerings that a regular passer by would not necessarily expect. It has big windows. For one, they hotly cook-up pizzettes, hot and very flavorful sandwiches, soups, coffees and tea. Right next to the register is a clear glass window box with all sorts of scrumptious sweets, muffins, cakes, tarts, choco donuts and cupcakes - that are made each day, I might add. The display is quaint and spot-on and each dessert is elevated on a tiny cake platter on a doily. Next, all the menu boards (above the counter and to the side) are easily legible, for elderly too. The menu that was handed to me was also not too complicated (2 sides) and was laminated, to avoid Covid. The staff was professional, bouncy (music), well prepared for groups that came and friendly. Some staff even remembered what some of the elderly in line wanted, before they ordered. How is that for manners and style?! Go kick rocks down an alley Starbucks! Lastly - the food and drinks here are simply very outstanding. I do not say that often. My cheese panini-style sandwich had layers of molten and hot cheeses, seared onions and somewhere in that mass also herbs and some dark mustard! It was scrumptious. They serve other classics like turkey, salami, ham sandwiches (some already wrapped for quick sale and go). The Athens Rooster is off the beaten (egg?), no track; (just kidding) but the parking is easy, there are lots of seats and even just simply placing (it's a small gesture, for sure - but chefs like me take note) a large jug full of free lemon water with clean cups on the bar counter at the front, really: makes all the visitors days. Cafe go-ers love those water jugs. Believe me! The Athens Rooster is a well maintained, bright and friendly late breakfast and late lunch spot. The grilled cheese and coffee stayed hot longer than 15 minutes after the sale. Very delicious! Top notch cafe - expertly prepared cuisine. Review: 5+
