My son has been attending Speech Inc for a couple of years and we have had a wonderful experience (specifically with Brooke and Carolyn)! His expressive speech has completely transformed and he really enjoys each session with his speech therapist (he adores her!!). As a parent, what I have so valued about Speech Inc is their thorough, data-driven recording of abilities and progress, and outlining of specific goals that we revisit quarterly. I was a little apprehensive of how engaged my son could be once we had to switch to virtual appointments but have been so impressed with how well his speech therapist has been able to keep him engaged and keep his progress steady. My son has attended Speech, Inc. for almost 5 years now and he recently graduated last week! We cannot thank Speech enough and all their staff for his growth. He's learned to better communicate and we have even seen a change is his behavior. When he first started Speech (at ~2 yrs old), it was tough. My son used to cry for most of the time, but as he went once every week, he became comfortable and really enjoyed going there. They even started a small pre-k class, and he loved it! Unfortunately, COVID hit not too long after, but fortunately for us, when he started Kindergarten, Speech allowed his sessions to continue virtually. My now 5 year old son has been going to Speech Inc once a week, an hour at a time for close to a year now. We started with in office appointments which were great because they have tons of toys for the kids to play with while they're "working" on their speech. The parents usually are sat in the waiting area which is nice and airy. The views are pretty amazing since the office is on the 7th floor. I believe some parents may have left the waiting area to run errands but were always back before the children finished. So there's always that option. However, since the pandemic, offices are closed and we are doing our appointments virtually on Zoom. We are still having great success with progress. The sounds that my son had trouble making while saying certain words has greatly improved. Through Zoom, he was able to get the same help and learn even more words and progress in his journey. Currently our speech pathologist is Kristin. WE LOVE HER! She is super professional, very friendly, flexible and is an absolute sweetheart! She knows how to keep my son's attention and is always super patient with him. We've had office visits with her before the pandemic and even though I was not in the room with my son, I knew he had a great time because he'd be smiling ear to ear when he met me in the waiting area. So if you're looking for virtual appointments or (eventually) in-person appointments, I would definitely recommend Speech Inc. read more

During this time of COVID, it's put a hold on our 3-year-old daughter's (soon to be 4 in a couple of weeks) progress in speaking, until we were referred to SPEECH, INC by her Kaiser Speech Therapist We were referred out to obtain more one-on-one attention and consistency for our daughter that unfortunately her Kaiser therapist could give (No fault of her own). The process of attaching her to another therapist was quite anxiety-provoking for me as she has difficulty attaching to anyone easily (very shy little girl). SPEECH, Inc and all its staff have made this process stress and anxiety-free! When we finally connected to her SPEECH, Inc Therapist Bridget via teletherapy, Bridget had not only honed in what my daughter's needs were but of my needs as well. She had given me the opportunity to discuss and create with her what type of session my daughter would ultimately enjoy and succeed with moving forward. She was able to also hone in what my daughter's interests and strengths were alongside her own curriculum to not only create a fun but very enjoyable teletherapy sessions. In the beginning I had some concerns when it came to how my daughter would succeed not only with coming from in-person to transitioning toward teletherapy but also acclimating to someone new. We have only been working with Bridget for 2 months and can't believe how open and attached my daughter has been with her. My husband and I only hope that more families turn to SPEECH, Inc teletherapy for their child's speech needs! I couldn't be more happier with this service! read more

My 6 year old son has been receiving therapy from SPEECH since he was 3. their service is great. We were able to see improvement in his behavior and ability to communicate after the first 6 months of once a week sessions. sessions in the office were great for him since he was able to play with different toys in the rooms and was able to socialize with other children but the 1 hour commute to and from home. It was hard to get him to agree to go but once at the office he was so excited. With teletherapy, there is no more commuting; it has made a huge difference in preparing him for speech.  He is able to take a break between school classes and speech, making it easier or him to transition. My son feels more comfortable with sharing his belongings and explaining how he uses them at home. If you think about the challenge of "re-wiring the brain" in regards to language acquisition and speech formation, it makes sense that therapy takes time and many visits. That is the logical side. The logistical side going to therapy is no picnic...ugh, Van Ness Street. HOWEVER, all is put into perspective by the LOVE side of Speech Inc. My kids feel complete LOVE and acceptance by all the therapists and staff. Over the years (and yes, working on dyslexia takes years) my kids have developed confidence, compassion, and a love of reading and writing. Speech Inc is a wonderful place! The staff are professional, friendly, flexible and clearly know how to handle children. My daughter started there in 2019 and she was working through some emotional stress due to her speech issues and was not the easiest child to work with; nonetheless Jessica was amazing! Not only did she help my daughter focus and have fun, she also gave us some great tips for how to work and motivate her to practice at home. Speech, Inc. seems to serve as an entry-level job for young therapists who've recently received their degrees. Not surprisingly, the therapists are uniformly enthusiastic and dedicated; our son (who went there weekly, for many months) related to them easily. But, being new to their profession, many of the therapists lack expertise - and there is a good deal of turnover, as they go on to pursue other positions or additional education. Hence, there is little long-term continuity of care. We found therapist supervision and patient tracking at Speech, Inc. to be lackluster, at best. Our son had much greater success working with Liesl Wentzke Hartmann at Communication Therapy. read more

When our 3-year-old's mild stutter and pronunciation issues prompted us to seek a recommendation for therapy, we were sent to SPEECH, Inc. We couldn't be happier! They started us with a brief conference to understand what brought us to them. Then our son had a play date with a few of the therapists who surreptitiously evaluated him. We settled on a twice-a-week program to address his fluency (stutter) and articulation (ability to pronounce certain consonants and vowels). It's been fantastic. Our son simply calls his sessions "teacher play dates" and I continue to marvel at how easily the staff is able to keep our child entertained while they help him along. The entire staff is extremely friendly... when our son's regularly scheduled therapist had to miss a session or two, he had no problem at all working with any of the other members. Amazingly, all of the issues they work on which seem subjective to you and me, can be quantified. We start with a set of goals, and every 3 months or so we meet to see what progress has been made and set up the next targets. For each issue we're tracking, our son needs 3 consecutive sessions of 80% success to move on. It's really very satisfying to be able to graph his progress, and I have to say it's comforting to note that the success they are measuring completely matches our own observations of his progress at home. After about a year of therapy we're just about ready to stop - no hard sell, no pushing us to stick with it. They are simply as happy and proud of his progress as we are. Our son has been going to Speech Inc since October 2015. He has Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) and recently was diagnosed with Autism (ASD) . When we first started going to Speech Inc our son was almost four and could only say a few intelligible words. Within a few months of his sessions, the change in his speech was profound. He is a hard worker and an amazing child but the Speech therapists are incredible. They work with him in many different areas of speech and they are a huge part of our sons success. Our son has been going to speech Inc since September of 2015 and I wish I had a success story to report. His progresses were painfully slow- even with 6 days a week sessions!!! I though it was him but when I took him to another therapist in Los Angeles last summer, I was shocked on the level of commitment the new therapist provided him and and his progress was amazing. He start talking in full sentences in 6 weeks that we were there. She couldn't believe speech inc philosophy and approach to apraxia! I continued his care at speech INC to provide my son concisitently while he finished the school year, but when I did change job, they wouldn't want to bother calling the insurance company for benefit. They expected me to pay cash because it was too hard for them to make a phone call. She suggested for me and MY PEDIATRICIAN to deal with my insurance company. Needlesss to say the insurance company advised us that it is standard of care for the the therapist to call with their notes and diagnoses and my pediatrician or myself can't do their job. Her respond? Cigna is difficult .... it's a major PPO insurance company who pays 90% of whatever they invoice without limitation.!! It took the new therapist 5 minutes to get back to me with approval. In summary, I can not recommend them. They run their business as it's a factory. I had to have many conversation to insist that I want the same therapist and not random changes with new people who are not familiar with my son and his treatment plan. In retro respect, I wished I had acted on my instinct long ago and switched his care. My advise is to do your home work before committing to this group, there are many well trained therapist in the city and you will see the difference much sooner than these guys. If you have a child with a speech disorder, look nowhere else. These folks are the best of the best! My daughter (ASD) was a client for 3 years and they just know what they are doing there! She made more progress there than with any other speech therapist (with exception to Mitra Ahani w/ route 2 language). They also had a great graph system to track progress that I thought was helpful. read more

Our son has been receiving therapy at Speech Inc. since June 2014 and has made amazing progress since then. He has Childhood Apraxia of Speech, and when he started at Speech he was 21 months old and had no words at all. He's now four and a half and you can't shut him up! His vocabulary is great, he has plenty of confidence talking and playing with other children and adults, and the intelligibility of his speech is excellent. There is still more work to do, but there is a light at the end of this long tunnel. Amy has been our main therapist since day one, and we love her. Our son went three times a week in the beginning, and now just goes twice. He has always seen Amy on 1-2 days and someone else on the other day (for a long time it was Annie, who is still there, and then when we initiated a change to the schedule he switched to seeing Laura). We have a quarterly meeting with Amy to discuss our son's progress. We review his goals from the previous quarter and his progress toward meeting them. Amy graphs his work in each session so we can see hard evidence of improvement, and as goals are met they are replaced with new ones. We also have "homework" items that we try to do at home whenever time allows. Amy and Katie (the co-director of the practice) helped set our expectations when we first started treatment, so we always knew that it would take time but that there would be a definite "end." We feel incredibly fortunate to have found Speech Inc., and we would recommend this practice to anyone. read more

I'm writing this review because I cannot give a higher recommendation for the speech therapy my son received at Speech Inc. He hasn't been at speech in more than a year and is probably one of the most articulate and fluent students in his Kindergarten class. You see, he started at Speech Inc. about three years ago when he was only 2 years and 10 months. He was a stutterer. We were assigned to speech therapist Laura Foster. We couldn't have been luckier. Not only is Laura educated and current in her techniques as a speech therapist, she's incredibly tuned-in to her students. I truly believe my son's success had as much to do with her "tuning in" to him than her skills' therapy. We worked with her for 9 months in a traditional manner and I saw some good progress. At one point, I no longer saw as much progress and was starting to get concerned for my son, but I knew he was getting something out of meeting with Laura so it was a struggle on my part about what to do next. Laura understood my concerns and shared with me the details of a new approach to stuttering called Lidcombe out of Australia. We both decided to give it a try. By that time, I think we spent another 6-9 months at Speech Inc. My son became smoother every week and I think the Lidcombe method really worked for him. On the very rare occasion that I hear my son struggle with bumpy speech again (believe me it's rare), I use the techniques that I learned from Laura to make sure he keeps on track--and he has beautifully. The most wonderful thing is that he will probably never remember that he was a stutterer. For that, I am forever indebted to Laura, her commitment to my child and to Speech Inc. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. PS--Laura also worked with my son to prepare him for Kindergarten. She identified several areas where he needed extra help--which has enabled him to transition quite smoothly. read more

I can't believe we have been going to speech inc for almost 3 years! the staff is amazing! the directors top knotch! they even helped us find an aide for my son! I have such a good relationship with everyone there! My son has thrived under their care. they have become wonderful advocates for me and my son and given me excellent advice on many things including kindergartens and IEP plans. I can not say enough good things about this place. they are the best! If you have a child with any sort of speech issues this is THE place to go. they are very good about responding to email and have always been flexible with scheduling. I've tried two places for speech therapy. Speech Inc felt like a huge machine. Different therapists cycled in and out. Therapy NEVER ended, I felt fooled and fed B.S. to keep my child in therapy there. It was as if they were searching for something to keep us there. Some of the therapists are great and work in schools full time. It just felt too big here and I wanted a more intimate feel where everybody knew our names. read more

My 7 year old daughter just graduated from Speech Inc., and she continues to be sad she is not still attending! She started in January to correct her pronunciation of "r" sounds and to improve her speech saliency. All the therapists she worked with are wonderful, and in particular, my daughter loved her longtime therapist, Mariela, and Brooke, whom she had been seeing since September. At Speech Inc., the clients are initially evaluated for therapy needs, and then a list of specific goals are set. Every three months, you meet with the head therapist (in our case, Mariela) and one of the Speech Inc. partners to review the progress against goals and then to discuss a new goal set. This makes the process easy to understand, so you can see exactly what your child needs and how they are doing. In my daughter's case, because the goals are broken down into manageable components, and because her therapists were so excellent, she made gratifyingly rapid progress. This made her feel good about herself and personally invested in continuing to do well. She also bonded strongly with her therapists, and while she was so happy to complete her therapy, she was really bummed to not see them anymore. She told me many times that she thought speech therapy was fun. It was a burden on me to shlep her to speech therapy twice a week (I have two other kids) but I have to say that in the end I was a little bit sad, too, to stop therapy, as it was such a tremendously positive experience. I will also add that I spent a lot of time in the waiting room chatting with other parents and caregivers, and I only ever heard that other parents and kids were having similarly good experiences at Speech Inc. read more

There is no place better than Speech Inc. I'm not sure how they do it, but Katie and Tiphanie have a gift for hiring the most incredible people. We have been with Speech, Inc. for over three years and have had nothing but incredibly positive experiences with every staff member. I honestly believe that the early intervention Speech, Inc. has provided for my son has literally saved his life ... perhaps a bit dramatic, but I'm not kidding. Not only have they loved and supported him, but they have made me a better mother by helping me to understand who he is and how to help him ... what better gift could a mother ask for. Speech, Inc. will set goals for your child that might seem unattainable in the moment, and then they will prove you wrong by quickly meeting those goals. They will help you be a better advocate for your child in school, and they will help you figure out strategies to communicate better with your child at home. Although I am happily anticipating our "graduation" from Speech in the somewhat near future, I will be selfishly sad to leave this amazing support group behind when the time comes. read more
