I've felt very cared for by everyone I've encountered here throughout pregnancy and postpartum, but wanted to especially highlight Ocean Berg. In just a couple lactation consultancy appointments, we've made so many breakthroughs in feeding with Ocean. I love how she attentively watches our baby for cues before trying to come up with a solution. She is super encouraging and strikes the right balance between being a great listener and getting right to the action, which makes for very productive sessions where we get a lot of practice in. We had also attended her childbirth class when I was pregnant, which I had found pretty educational. For example, she had made us feel very comfortable with fentanyl as a painkiller during labor, which turned out to be extra important for me since the anesthesiologist wasn't available to give an epidural before my baby came out so I had to rely on fentanyl during labor. My main complaint is that introductions took quite a while because every couple in attendance answers 5 or so questions, and it was hard to schedule the class online and also reschedule it when the dates changed. Lastly, I love that Newborn Connections has Saturday lactation consultant appointments available. And also the appointments end up very affordable after being billed to my insurance! read more

(1) Lactation Consulting. Christen Chang is an amazing lactation consultant. She's super patient, super gentle, super knowledgeable, and super caring and empathetic. We met with her several times in the first two months of our journey with breastfeeding. The initial first few visits were to learn the ropes, and the second month's visits were to troubleshoot challenges that arose. Christen is so great, no amount of praise or explanation could do justice to just how truly excellent she is. (2) Classes. We also took first aid, child birth prep, and breastfeeding classes with Newborn Connection. The sign up process and web interface is unintuitive, but the classes themselves were helpful, fun to do with partner, and a good opportunity to meet other expectant couples in the same phase of life as you. (3) Rentals. Lastly, we rented a hospital grade breast pump here. If your insurance covers it, or if you can afford it, it's great to have because it's much more effective than retail breast pumps. If you plan on pumping for more than 24 months (i.e., 2+ babies for 12+ months), buying hospital grade might be cheaper than renting hospital grade. read more

I attended a CPR and First Aid class for infants taught by Thomas today. He was an excellent instructor! The class was packed with useful information presented in an easy to understand way, and with practice sessions which took the fear out of emergencies, in the event one were to arise. Rachel Watson is the best of the best! Being a first-time mom, I had a steep learning curve on taking care of my baby and anything breastfeeding related. Rachel was very patient and kind during all interactions - from her community support group to our in-office visit. It is easy for a new mom to overthink everything especially when sleep deprived, and Rachel's approach on going with the path of least resistance + letting the baby take the lead in breastfeeding has comforted me greatly. She has many years of experience, shares evidence-based advice, and gives constructive advice for us to consider. We visited Newborn Connections for an in-person consultation and Rachel was so joyful / loving with our little one. The weighted feeds and pump flange sizing helped me greatly improve my breastfeeding and pumping experience, because (1) I was confident that my baby was able to get enough milk that she needed and (2) the correct flange size helped me pump more milk! All in all, I highly recommend Rachel to any caregivers needing lactation support. I have personally visited a few IBCLCs, and I'd trust Rachel's advice the most as it always worked for us. I first learned about Newborn Connections from a friend who gave birth during the pandemic. She described the virtual lactation group as a "lifeline", and so I decided to check out Breastfeeding 101. Rachel was the presenter and she was amazing! Her level of knowledge was so deep and level of care for babies and especially moms was super strong! I don't often leave reviews but had to share my wonderful experience with Rachel Watson. I was told based on a previous surgery that I wouldn't be able to breast feed - Rachel was honest, open and thoughtful and I left every session with her excited and motivated. She's fun to be around and easy to talk to. This place has been really helpful for me as I've been on my breastfeeding journey. I had a session with a LC shortly after my son was born and we did a weighted feed which was really reassuring to help me understand if he was getting enough milk from me I also rented a Medela Symphony pump from them for the first month which helped boost my confidence at home with pumping I also have dropped in to their weekly zoom sessions with Rachel who is an AMAZING LC. My experience with newborn connections was so wonderful. It was a differentiator when it came to the post-natal care I received at CPMC, which was exceptional all-around. Gaby was so wonderful to work with in the hospital. And the post-discharge support provided by Rachel Watson was a GAME CHANGER and a key reason I was able to continue breastfeeding my daughter (and continue doing so as she turns one year). Rachel's clinic at CMPC was like a lab, where you're under the observation and care of a warm, funny, extremely helpful clinician. She had such wonderful recommendations and the experience was so personalized and comfortable. As my breast feeding journey continued beyond the initial weeks, her office hours were AMAZING. I cannot say enough about her virtual "office hours". I couldn't get over the fact that, as an exhausted first-time mom, I could hop on a virtual meeting link twice a week (if needed) to ask any nuanced questions that arose. I encountered many barriers to breastfeeding - latching issues, undersupply (then oversupply), baby having trouble digesting my milk/having allergies to my diet...Rachel was there every step of the way and would actually follow up with the most helpful resources and a WRITE-UP(!) to address each issue as it arose....I have received a lot of fantastic concierge-quality medical-care in my 38 years, but this blew me away. I found Newborn Connections when my husband and I were looking for baby courses to take in preparation for our new baby. We took the baby CPR and Baby Basics Class that was offered at the hospital and they were great. It was at one of these courses where we met Rachel Watson and she absolutely changed our lives! Rachel Watson is one of the best lactation consultants! As a first time mom, navigating breastfeeding was really challenging and especially difficult in those first few months when everything is so new. Rachel Watson was a savior to me. I was struggling very bad with breastfeeding (I now know most people do) and the lactation consultants I had seen at the hospital said the intense breast pain was normal. As soon as Rachel saw me she identified that it was not normal and helped me recover as well as find the technique that helped me and my baby on our breastfeeding journey. From our first meeting, she was calm, welcoming, rational (something I wasn't with a 3-day old newborn), knowledgeable, and most importantly realistic/practical. As a first time mom, I had no idea what I was doing but new what I was attempting wasn't working. Nursing was extremely painful and time consuming. Fast forward to meeting Rachel, she immediately noticed my daughter was tongue tied and my body positioning needed adjusting. She referred me to a dentist (we ended up seeing a ENT) who clipped her tongue which almost immediately solved the pain issue. I returned for additional visits and she helped me with positioning to omit back pain and answered all of my questions with a very practical approach. Outstanding Lactation Consultants and tips. I really wish I could give Newborn Connections 5 stars but the scheduling assistant unfortunately makes it impossible :-( Such a shame! I'll explain at the end of this review since it's the least important although it could make mamas book elsewhere since it is the first impression they might get of the business -- which is why I'm hoping this feedback helps improve how patients are spoken to. To start, the entire staff at CPMC (with the exception of the above person mentioned) has been phenomenal since I gave birth to our little one 6 weeks ago. Amita was my amazing LC during my recovery days at the hospital, helping baby latch and giving great overall breastfeeding advice. Such a sweet, gentle woman. 6 weeks post partum, I called Newborn Connections for an appointment 3 days ago and got to make one for just a few days later. In the meantime, I was pleasantly surprised when I got a call back from Rachel Watson, another lactation consultant. She carefully listened to my concerns, reassured me which boosted my confidence and we had a great chat for 20 minutes. She was so friendly and knowledgeable. Right after our call, she sent me a thorough recap email with BF videos. Some of this info helped so much: like the video on hand expressing. I never knew I could extract about 1 more oz doing this technique. Game changer! Thank you, Rachel! This morning I came in and met with Jennifer, lactation consultant as well. She was amazing! My baby doesn't seem as satisfied on the breast than when he's getting a bottle (we HAD to introduce them when he was underweight) so I wanted to figure out how much milk I was giving him per nursing session. Jennifer weighed our little one, watched him feed to make sure he was swallowing and eating correctly, then weighed him again to see how much he had. I was able to ask many questions along with my husband on the phone (who couldn't be present because of Covid restrictions) and Jennifer was thorough and such great help. She also printed recap notes and sent an email post visit. A super nice woman as well. I would absolutely go back and see her, Amita or Rachel if I need advice. Regarding the facilities, the rooms at NC are clean and new -- I loved the 1:1 session with Jennifer which felt super personalized. They even have different breastfeeding pillows and you can choose the one of your liking. My Breastfriend was my choice since we use this one at home. I appreciated that no one else was in that day and that we were even able to start early! In regards to why I'm knocking off one star: if you need to reschedule, Newborn Connections or at least the scheduling assistant Michael, aren't flexible with their cancellation fees even during a global pandemic and dangerous toxic smoke taking over the city and entire West Coast. I'm sincerely shocked by the lack of compassion and understanding Michael showed during these extremely hard times in the Bay Area. I actually don't even care I wasn't able to reschedule -- this is about the condescending tone that he used speaking to me. I had him on speaker phone and my husband was shocked on how he "guilt-tripped" me so rudely (his words). It was 2pm when I called to inquire about rescheduling my next day appointment because of the terrible air quality, knowing I had 24 hours to cancel. I was 3.5 hours past that time when I called. The air quality in had deteriorated to "very unhealthy" level the last day and was forecasted to be "dangerous" by the time of my appointment the next day. I had just learned this information prior to calling. I stated my concerns of exposing a newborn that was in the NICU to these levels of smoke (yes, even for a few minutes) and Michael was dismissive, basically asked why I was calling so late since the air had been bad for a day. "You're not walking are you? Sometimes they say things are worse than they are" he said. Um sorry Michael, you're obviously not breastfeeding all night or a mom to understand that maybe my hands were full with a baby before the time I called? That forecasts are constantly changing hence why I called after it changed? And that maybe when you don't sleep all night you might need to go make lunch or use the bathroom when you finally get a break and not obsess over Air.gov and then call you? I'm also not asking you for your advice on coming or not but telling you I'd like to reschedule. Michael had such a snarky tone to his voice basically saying "well, if your priority is not feeding your baby, don't come" after telling me I'd likely be charged $300+, the cost of the visit. Just rude, so I told him I would be there, took a deep breath and hung up. If you're not a friendly person, why choose work where you have to deal with people? So disappointed CPMC would put someone like this to speak with new moms already dealing with so much stress in particular this year. read more

I've seen a few LCs from Newborn Connections. The first two LCs I met were very kind. One of them suspected a tongue tie and gave helpful advice. She also taught me how to pump, gave me samples of nipple cream, and showed me how to use a nipple shield. After I was discharged, I struggled with breastfeeding. I decided to make an appointment, which was very easy. I met with Jennifer, who was the absolute sweetest. She answered all my questions. After my visit, my baby's latch was significantly better and my nipple pain improved about 90%. She also ruled out a tongue tie and provided many resources. I felt very supported and she was incredibly patient. My breastfeeding journey was going well, but I had some additional questions. My baby's lips were blistered and she was more gassy. I decided to make another appointment. This time, I was seen by Mary-Ellen. Within the first 10 minutes, I wanted to leave. I felt judged and she made me feel like a terrible mother. My baby was gaining weight fast and I was overproducing. As a first time mom, I had no idea what I was doing. With the other LCs, I was told pumping once or twice a day was okay while my husband bottle fed our baby. my husband wanted to make sure he was bottle feeding correctly and she seemed very reluctant to check his technique as LCs *only* check breastfeeding techniques. I asked if she would help check for any lip tie/tongue tie issues. She did not want to check and told me to see a specialist. I felt very uncomfortable because she was quite condescending and judgmental. She made several unnecessary and rude comments. I felt like many of my questions were left unanswered. read more

I went to the Newborn Connections at Mission-Bernal 3 weeks after my second child was born. I cried the whole way home, feeling horrible self doubt. Even though I breastfed my first baby for 15 months, the lactation specialist still managed to make me feel ashamed for the feeding problems I was having with my second. She clucked at my baby's pacifier and asked why I was using it, told me I shouldn't be giving any formula, and advised me to put my baby to breast every hour around the clock. At the time, my baby was 3 weeks old and was only nursing for 3 minutes at a time. She had failed to get back to birthweight despite her having a good latch and me having a good supply, so my pediatrician has just advised me to start adding formula powder to her breastmilk bottles for added calories. The lactation consultant contradicted all of that and scoffed at the Pediatrician's recommendations. I listened politely for 1hr and 15 minutes, left with my baby, cried in the car, and never went back. My baby is now one year old. She continued to have feeding problems, both breast and bottle, and is followed by GI specialists for failure to thrive. She's doing well now, thanks for formula (she still needs special formula and fortified feeds in order to grow). She had a medical problem, not a breastfeeding problem. Instead of shaming me, the lactation consultant should have recognized that. read more

I don't often write Yelp reviews, but this one truly warrants it. Rachel Watson was a savior for me! I came to Rachel a couple of weeks after my baby was born and needed a ton of guidance on nursing. Being a first time mom with a baby whose weight was dropping had me in a lot of stress, but Rachel really helped me with so much grace and patience. She taught me how to pump, did weighted feeds, taught me various nursing positions and most of all, she reminded me to take care of myself too. She constantly encouraged me to continue nursing but also to not push myself too much. I left each session with her motivated to continue my nursing journey and I'm SO glad for it. In other LC visits I had tried, it felt rushed and the consultant wasn't very helpful. But Rachel would take the time to understand MY situation and try different solutions. I once needed urgent help and she graciously offered to take a phone call ON A WEEKEND and we spoke for ~30 mins. The office experience was also amazing - they had a shop with a bunch of BFing supplies and baby items at the same site. Rachel even suggested renting their weighing scale (which we did since the Amazon ones were too imprecise!) for a few days from the shop. All in all, I can't recommend her enough. Rachel Watson is amazing! When my husband and I toured CPMC at the old campus in Presidio Heights in 2017 for our first son, she was not only super helpful with answering so many peoples' questions but made the tour especially fun and engaging. I know it's weird that a hospital tour for delivery could even be fun but Rachel's charm had us smiling even after leaving the facility. Fast forward to 2021 and due to covid, we had to do a virtual tour of the new CPMC on Vanness for delivery of our second son. We got lucky and Rachel led the tour--we immediately remembered her because she managed to make a video tour both entertaining and informative. She patiently answered everyone's questions over and over and over again despite having been clear the first time saying it and having the same info in the packet provided before the tour. She was available for any questions even days after the tour. Post delivery, Rachel has still been extremely helpful and continues to go above and beyond. CPMC is so lucky to have her on the their team. We also wanted to give a shout out to Jackie Marx, one of the wonderful lactation consultants. She visited us during our hospital stay and was incredibly patient and thoughtful with helping us about breastfeeding. They have an affordable lactation consultation service that's why I chose to come here when I was having issues with breastfeeding my son. The cool thing is you get free parking when you have an appointment with an LC. Super helpful. I met with Beth and you can tell she has a lot of experience. She can be a bit intimidating at first but she means well. She's good in staying in contact through phone and email. Unfortunately, I feel like my breastfeeding issues were not fully addressed since I continued to have problems with it. I love their store. Lady there is super helpful. I took the childbirth intensive class with Carrie Finger. I found the class to be a total waste of time. The instructor often contradicted herself and provided little useable information. After filling out the survey and leaving a voicemail about my disappointment, I heard back from Michael Junker, the Education Coordinator. These are the lactation consultants contracted for CPMC patients. They are very good and are able to give pretty good advice. They were able to give advice on how to pump and other things such as nutrition. Just need to make sure the CPMC nurse puts in referral early. They will keep saying that the Lactation Consultants are busy and can only see people on the last day, this is a lie. My wife and I attended the Childbirth Preparation Intensive class and it was a complete waste of time. We were there from 9am to 4pm, 7 hours, and the class probably had less than two hours of actual content in it. It was incredibly disrespectful to our time, especially as new parents who have so many things to do before our baby arrives! We want classes that are streamlined, efficient, so we can get in, learn, and move on to more important matters. Some specifics: * At 9:40 (40 minutes post class starting) we were still doing awkward intros around the room) * There was a lot of anecdotal advice from the instructor not rooted in science like "Girls like to sleep", "Boys like to eat". Maybe this was a joke. I didn't take it that way * The class had a 1 hour lunch. Waste of time. We are busy people. Give us 30 minutes. We brought sandwiches with us. Give me 15 minutes. I want to get out as fast as possible. Respect my time. * Lots of fake data. Our instructor literally said "Kagels reduce chance of prostate cancer 75%". I looked this up and I think that's not true. * She also said "Privacy makes labor shorter". Again, I don't think this is actually true. But she said this. I don't attend these classes for fun. I attend them because I want to know how best to take are of my baby. At the same time I'm working, I might be moving, I'm buying baby things, and doing 100 other tasks to prep for my new addition. This class disrespected all of that and made me sit in a room for 8 hours listening to someone who had no scientific knowledge about childbirth, so i heard random anecdotal stories about how things might turn out. This review is for their phone/email staff. The phone staff is completely rude and totally uncalled for!! I had a terrible experience when I wrote a polite email letting them know that I had received a duplicate email from their system MULTIPLE times with the same 11 pdfs, and requested that they stop that email from being sent. (I've worked in email marketing before and would want to know if there was a glitch in my system spamming customers.) I received a call from their staff who, when I re-explained the situation over the phone, was super curt and passive aggressive, basically saying a sarcastic "thank you ma'am for telling me how to do my job" and hung up before I could say anything else. Note: the woman who led the hospital tour from Newborn Connections was great and the space seems nice and welcoming for new parents. But whoever is on their phone lines and troubleshooting their email updates need some serious customer service training. read more

My husband and I are expecting so we took the Childhood Prep Express class. We ended up walking out an hour early. They went through an outdated PowerPoint presentation, the teacher Carrie was not able to answer simple questions, and the format was just not helpful at all. Another couple said they felt like they should get their money back. Can't speak for their other services, which seem well reviewed, but it was really disappointing and I do not suggest taking this class. read more
