I've been coming to Spear weekly for my sessions, mainly for strengthening my core. I get a full 50 mins or so with my main PT, which I really like. My first few sessions I was always handed off to a technician, which I did not like at all. However the last few sessions I had was with my PT. My session times now are usually before noon so that probably is why, it's not too crazy busy but still full. My PT is attentive and will now move me up in resistance! Super exited about that! Location is clean and has lockers to put all my winter gear. Really enjoy my weekly sessions! read more

I have arthritis in my hip and was advised to try PT before seeing a surgeon. After an evaluation I went to the upper east side location and was treated by Nicholas. 2ND AVE and 84st. After he pulled and stretched my leg I went home and experienced the most painful cramping I have ever experienced. I thought I was having a heart attack. I went back thinking I wasn't hydrated. The same happened the 2nd time when I hydrated. My wife convinced me to continue. The third time I cramped at the facility and left after Nicholas applied heat to the cramped hip with no relief I limped home and took pain medication to relieve the cramping. His methods were aggressive and thoughtless. There was no call or follow-up. read more

I have been attending PT here for several months now with PT Odalisse and I could not be more pleased. The facility is clean and all staff are friendly. Odalisse is so sweet and friendly. She is a pro and knows exactly what's going on and how to help you. They really make you work out here which is great to continue after PT sessions. They also have an app that show you the specific exercises to practice in between session step by step. This location is close to mass transit. I highly recommend Spear read more

So sad, went way downhill compared to 4 years ago. I cancelled an appt 2 days before through email and phone and they are sending me invoices/bills for the session. No one answers the phones or checks messages at either the 84th or 89th location. receptionists are not welcoming and the therapist basically worked on me for 5 min and gave me exercises the rest of the time. management is clearly AWOL. read more

I have had physical therapy twice at Spear on the upper east side. The therapists are good but often distracted. One assistant was in the midst of working with me doing 20 repetitions using a resistance band; we were up to 15 and she dropped everything to go set up another client with another exercise! I had a frozen shoulder 5 weeks ago and by chance ran into David Block from SPT while walking our dog in front of his office. He took care me 6 years ago at a different location and remembered my name and type of injury I had back then! He listens to what the patient is going through, honest and a great therapist with very detail explanation on why we are doing certain exercises. I attended Spear, and later PPT across the street, for a few months as part of my recovery from knee surgery. My general conclusion is that these type of places can do an adequate job for those people who need to undergo a relatively straightforward recovery that involves a standard exercise regimen. I found them to be generally overcrowded and understaffed, with a 'mass production' type of business model. Having a more complex situation that required more specialized attention, I moved on to more highly professionalized places, such as Mount Sinai and HSS, and am glad I did. I would still be spinning my wheels at Spear. read more

Spear UES is top notch, so happy I was recommended here by my doctor. Also very thankful that he referred me to Joe Losurdo. I had a really painful achilles and foot injury that was nagging me for months before I decided to bite the bullet and go to PT. Wasn't sure what to expect since I had never been, but Joe and all of the staff were fantastic. It's a pretty small place and things get booked up quickly so I recommend booking 5-6 times in advanced so you have your spot. Joe was always very accommodating and also so patient with me. I definitely got frustrated throughout my experience because things got better then worse then better. The insurance process was smooth, the sessions were always great and I'm so thankful for the whole team that helped me. Definitely recommend this PT office. I'm sure the other Spears across the city are good too. read more

If you area a person who needs the discipline of paying a fee and making a appointment to get your PT done, this is a good choice. Large, bright, clean, lots of bands, balls and pads to use. People are friendly. Just do not expect any personal attention whatsoever. What worked better for me was to get a very specific diagnosis from my doctor, and then go online to search out videos of exercises posted by PTs. I went to Spear for rehabbing an achillies tear. Spear physical therapy place is a place where the therapist sees you for 10-15 minutes and then passes you off to an underling to watch you do excercises with little to no supervision. There is little attention paid to you because the therapist is off to see their next patient. There is little to no monitoring. Please do yourself a favor and visit another location. read more

Spear therapy has a lot to learn. I have taken physical therapy for many years and never would believe that this kind of a therapy place exists. It is purely about making money and nothing more. They have therapist working with at least 2 people at a time. Tell them what to do and walk away. Come back 10 minutes later . SO much can happen when they walk away. I have watched elderly people trying to figure out what to do when they walk away and one day someone will be badly hurt. Unfortunately this is a danger zone because no one is overseeing what you are doing. Truly disgraceful Think many times before you consider to ever go to this kind of Therapy place. read more

I just had my last PT session with SPEAR UES. I was referred to this PT office from my Dr at Mt Sinai a few months ago. My problem was with my right hip. From Day one at SPEAR, I feel like I've had nothing but their complete undivided attention. Every single employee made me feel like I was their one and only patient ( and believe me they have many many patients). i even feel there was a positive vibe in the center and a great camaraderie amongst the therapists and technicians. FYI my right hips feels a lot better due to the service i received at SPEAR and their guidance. Thanks Leon Zhao (my personal therapists for last 6-8 sessions) and Zach (PT intern from Columbia University) for all your diligent hard work in helping me improve my hip problem. Worst experience. I was referred to Spear by a friend for bilateral sciatica, and shoulder and lower back pain. I am a nurse, so I was quite shocked that this place can even claim it is a safe and patient-centered facility. When I arrived, the staff at the front desk told me to just go to the back. They didn't explain that their locker room and changing spaces were closed. I went to the back and it was just a large room full of clients and therapists, with no one to greet me. I eventually found someone who helped me and set me up at a space, but the only place to put my personal belongings was under a PT table. My consult consisted of a PT Googling exercises for me to do at home, which I could have done myself. My next six sessions (3 weeks, 2x a week per my PCP) consisted of PT and PT assistants Googling exercises, telling me to do 10-30 repetitions, and walking away to gossip and get on Facebook while I completed these exercises unsupervised. As another reviewer mentioned, this is dangerous because clients can be doing the exercises wrong, creating more damage or putting them at risk for fall or injury. I emailed management to let them know of my concerns and they called me stating I would get more supervision. (Aside from safety, at $40 a pop 2x a week, that is $320 a month that I was investing in my health that could have gone to a high level gym or personal trainer. Not to mention that at least with Internet videos you can watch and rewatch to ensure correct form.) I returned for my last sessions after speaking with management, and all the front desk staff and PT acted salty and petty the entire time I was there, which made me feel like they got feedback from their manager and just didn't care. I got additional referrals to continue PT from my rehab MD and I can assure you I won't be giving Spear a dime! read more

I had pins and needles in my left leg. At times my leg felt numb. I was really concerned as I'm 71 and hope to be able to walk and play golf. My doctor recommended Spear. I live near the 84th street location. I met Leon. I was lucky. He's very knowledgeable and explained everything to me! Even why my arms got numb. My neck! And lower back. He understood my needs and with his expertise I am on the road to recovery . Leon is wonderful. Kind caring attentive thoughtful and mostly super knowledgeable. I would highly recommend Leon and I thank him for reassuring me throughout the weeks as we worked together. It's a process! read more

Everyone is friendly enough and the PT is fine and you do get individualized attention and space (sometimes places are like a factory). But everyone is very young and do not have that many years of professional experience. I think of it as "good enough" PT but it would be nice to have a few people there who also have been practicing like 15 or more years and have the benefit of that perspective and skill level. Update: I appreciate the director's comments and that he responded so quickly (and at all). But there is a difference between having great schooling and training and decades of experience. Generally speaking, the more experienced a practitioner is, the sharper their assessment, the more nuances they pick up on, the better their questions, and the greater their context for making recommendations. It's like the difference between going to a doctor who has been practicing for 5 years (and no one there had been) and one who has been practicing for 20. I'm not saying my experience was negative because it wasn't. But I felt a difference from when I saw more seasoned physical therapists. read more

My experience at Spear PT was awesome. I'm so grateful for my PT Stephen for helping me get back to where I was prior to my back injury. I've been through PT multiple times for my back and knee, but I've never had such attentive therapists and aides (Patrick, Amy, Rafael and Ricky) working with me who truly took the time to make sure I was doing all the exercises correctly and progressing through my PT program. Worst experience of my life. I had a 7am appointment and they stressed to me to arrive 30 min prior in order to fill out paperwork. My therapist didn't arrive until 7:30. A FULL HOUR later and keep in mind, this is 6:30 in the morning. I ended up being late to work. I understand that things happen but I expected a reimbursement for the session. They REFUSED to reimburse me and i was a brand new patient. This was my very first session. Horrible customer service. They even told me that the therapist said there was issues w the train that day when in fact the PT said word for word " I slept thru my alarm". Wonderful. Either way, it is expected of them to reimburse especially since they charge clients $40 if we cancel within 24 hours. If I should be penalized for canceling a day before, they should be held responsible for arriving this late with zero notice what so ever. Jaclyn the director refused to give me even half off the session. I was in disbelief. I discontinued any further sessions. They clearly have no sense of customer service. Zero. Not how proper businesses are run. read more

I started to feel a nagging pain in my upper left hip in late October 2015, which would sporadically appear during a run or sitting at my desk for long periods of time. Despite stretching and massaging, the pain started to become more frequent and came to concerning state during a treadmill run in late December. The problem: I had started a 7-month training program for my first Ironman in Lake Placid, meaning I needed to rehab through the training as much as possible. I came to SPEAR in January 2016 through an insurance referral and after comparing several online reviews. I was fortunate to be matched with Marissa who helped me pinpoint the problem and understand that my issue wasn't just isolated to the hip. She helped create a rehab and "prehab" program that was tailored to my training and career demands. What's more, she helped me get through a setback when I rolled my left ankle in a March snowstorm...talk about adding insult to injury! I could not have completed Ironman Lake Placid in late July 2016 and beat my time goal without the help of Marissa and the rest of the SPEAR team. I am now armed with an arsenal of stretches and strength exercises to keep me strong, active and pain free. If you put in the work, the SPEAR staff will help you reach whatever goal you're aiming to achieve. And you'll have fun working with them during the process! read more

I was suffering from two avulsion fractures in my right ankle and came to Spear to get my physical therapy before and after my surgery. My physical therapist was Mike George, I couldn't have asked for anyone better. Mike was amazing he worked hard to get me back to where I needed to be and he always has a smile on his face. I was sad when it was time for me to stop going there, Spear was the kind of place that made you feel at home. Everyone there was super friendly and made you laugh even on days that were really hard. Don and Justin are also really great guys they work hard and have fun. I love county music and every time I would show up for my session Justin would turn it on for me, the people at Spear 84th go above and beyond to make there clients feel comfortable. I was initially opposed to setting up an appointment with Spear because of my past experience with a physical therapy clinic that operated out if the same location as an orthopedic office (it was a small room that the orthopedic office rented out to the physical therapy clinic). Donald, who I guess is a supervisor, led me to their facilities far into the location and passed the orthopedic offices. I could immediately see that it was very spacious and they had all the supplies and staff necessary to facilitate their patients' needs. The staff is incredible. Very caring, attentive, and knowledgeable. They are always prepared and always communicate their goals for your therapy. Marissa clearly stated that she wanted my legs to gain strength and for my muscles to be looser and we got to working on it right away. I went to Spear altogether for 1 year and 4 months after a knee injury and two knee surgeries. I have had subluxation of the patella and two torn MPFLs for 8 years. I thought I didn't need surgery but then nothing was helping my constant knee injuries so I had to face the facts. I was referred to Spear by Dr. John MacGillivray at HSS. Seeing Sarah Tabia twice a week from halfway through my freshman year of college to the beginning of my junior year really made things special. Everyone at Spear always made me feel at home and welcome. My schedule is always crazy busy and I was able to get an appointment even if I arrived really early. When Sarah became the director of 84th St, I commuted an extra 30 blocks just to see her because she is an incredible therapist and person. It wasn't just the physical part of my knees that held me back but it is my psychological fear also. Everyone at Spear was motivational and encouraging for my recovery. Justin, the technician, was also inspirational and made sure my physical therapy was not just a serious road to recovery but it was enjoyable and fun. I looked forward to going to physical therapy for the first time ever when I came to Spear. If you want to recover from your injury or are in rehabilitation from a surgery but aren't sure where to go, please go to Spear. You will not regret it. If it wasn't for the staff at Spear I probably would not be motivated to keep my knees strong and continue my post-rehab program. Spear PT provided me with exceptional care. I was hit by a car in August 2015 and my orthopedist recommended Spear. I met with Jimmy Olayos and he continued my care through out the entire time of my rehabilitation/recovery. During the first session we had a private hour session to discuss what happened, perform diagnostic exercises, and develop a treatment plan. Each additional session I met with Jimmy for 15 minutes of massage, 30 minutes or so of exercises that got increasingly harder as the weeks went out, 10 minutes of electrical stimulation, then an ice session. He is professional, knows his field well, cares about fixing his patients, and very structured. I tried both at 84th and 56th street locations - at each space I was impressed by the support staff and the facilities. Getting hit by a care was bad, but getting to know how good physical therapy can be at a place like Spear was a very good experience and if I ever were to be injured again, I would absolutely go back to Spear. read more

His quality of care is top notch and his assistant crew is knowledgeable, friendly, and diligent. I am a 28 year old male and have been an athlete all my life. I don't know what I would have done without Spear Physical Therapy and Jaclyn, my physical therapist. In December I had major ankle and ligament repair surgery and I've had to deal with this horrible winter while barely able to walk. As a person that's used to running 4-6 miles a day, I was miserable. Jaclyn was amazing. She knows her stuff and helped me understand what was going on with my body so I can do all the right things at home, and not just during therapy. I got a lot stronger, much quicker than I thought I would, but Jaclyn and the staff were uber supportive even when I wasn't having my best of days. You've gotta try pretty hard to leave there without being in a better mood! At my post-surgery checkup when I told my doc where I went for physical therapy, he told me I was in great hands. I hope I never NEED physical therapy again, but at least there's a good place for me if I ever need it. read more

I'd been experiencing neck pain for years. Just figured it was part of working at a computer all day. Fortunately my doctor decided to send me to Spear to see if there was anything they could do. I was evaluated by Marissa who noticed that I'd lost quite a bit of mobility in my C-Spine. Over the next few weeks, she developed a routine for me that I could do during my breaks. I have now been pain free for four months and feel amazing. read more

Since mid 2016 i have been going to SPEAR, almost on a regular basis. July 2016 I had my right hip replaced and four months later my left hip was replaced as well. I started with SPEAR one week after my first surgery. Not only did they help me learn how my new hip worked, but prepared me for the second hip replacement which was scheduled for November. The therapist (Brooke) made sure that I worked on both hips starting in July, to strengthen both legs, work on flexibility, range of motion and balance, so when I was finished with the surgeon, I would be walking better than I did prior to surgery. When I had the second hip replacement (left side), I went back to SPEAR, knowing that the level of care and the cleanliness of SPEAR was superior to any other Physical Therapy facilities that i initially investigated. I thought I was done with surgeries, when I started having knee problems, I was again told my doctor to go back to PT, and needless to say i went back to SPEAR, while PT did not help my knee, the therapists really tried to help. It turned out I have three major tears in my right meniscus, and again needed surgery. After the surgery I immediately called Spear to set up appointments for my right knee. I have now learned how to walk better, I am walking more upright, using my thighs and butt more. My legs and hips feel great, I am much more flexible than I was before all the surgeries, my balance is so much better, actually my body feels light, straight and younger than my 60 some of years. I have always gone to the gym or played a sport, I am not an athlete, but now i feel like I can do any physical activity. Should anyone ever need a great Physical Therapist call SPEAR, there is really no other place to go with extremely caring people, who will make you feel better, especially if you do your "homework". read more

If I could give SPEAR 10 stars I would. My knees were *killing me* for weeks. After being given an Rx for physical therapy, I took my husband's advice and sought out the help of Joe Losurdo. I am so grateful I did, because he and his team are miracle workers. First of all, everyone I work with is personable, knowledgeable, and helpful. I have tons of questions, and they have answers and advice. They are so thorough in their approach. Everyone works together as though they are dancers in a well choreographed dance. I never wait between exercises. Each session involves a warm up and massage of trouble spot. Then there is a series of exercises that feel like they are doing something seriously helpful. They feel like glute and leg muscles I have never used, and I have been doing barre and pilates classes for over a year. Whaaaaaaat?! Where have these been hiding. At the end of each session is a and an ice. By this point I feel like I'm in heaven. I highly recommend Spear!!! I feel like I am being rebuilt! read more

I highly recommend going to Spear 84th st. Stephen is wonderful and got me from injured in a wheelchair to running a half marathon. He was patient and always listened to what my goals were to make sure I stayed on track. On top of that they have wonderful techs that hold your hand through the exercises and work well as a team to make sure your needs are being met.
