Finding an excellent physical therapist can be hard to do... in fact I usually "save up" my issues until I have a business trip to Tucson, where my favorite PT resides. However, after discovering Flex I don't think I'll be doing that any longer! The staff at Flex on the Upper West Side (Stephen, Ariella, Michael, Madison) are extremely knowledgeable and really CARE about their patients. I recently completed 20 hours of observation at Flex as part of my PT school application, and watching these guys was a great reminder of why I'm going into the profession myself. Time and time again I saw each one of them exhibit patience, respect, and caring compassion towards every person under their care. The next time I need PT for something, I'm definitely going to Flex, and have already referred one of my friends there. Not that helpful and very much mill style PT that charged my insurance company extremely high amounts for short visits of very light manual therapy. It was double of what I'm paying at other out of network places. During the treatment there was a lot of small talk to fill the air, not a lot of patient education and treatment. My PT was even shooting the sh*t with other PTs during my visits. Maybe that's what some people like about this place, the PTs are very casual. However, if you're a serious athlete or just looking for the best treatment (good exercises, stronger manual therapy, and other more modern modalities such as laser, heat, shockwave, etc.), you should consider another spot. read more

If you call up Flex and ask how much a visit is, they will tell you $150 for the initial visit and $100 for each follow-up, assuming you have no insurance. The people at Flex were submitting claims to my insurance company, United Health Care, for amounts way over $100 (sometimes even $800), and my insurance company was paying them: sometimes ~$600 a visit, sometimes ~$400 a visit, sometimes ~$200 a visit. Every time, UHC paid Flex well over $100 a visit. Plus, I had to pay a $30 Co-pay at every visit as well, as part of my insurance policy. Because I was worried that my health care premiums would increase significantly because of UHC's excessive payments to Flex, I decided that I'd rather pay Flex their service fee of $100, and submit those claims to my insurance company as an out-of-network provider, which they are, not only to hopefully prevent a large increase in premiums (because who is really paying those $~600 charges? me and other UHC consumers), but I would also get some reimbursement from UHC because we have already met our out-of-network deductible. For months, I have been asking Flex to give me an insurance form to submit to UHC so I can get reimbursed for multiple $100 visits, and for one reason or another, they refuse. At first, they claimed they didn't know the insurance codes that I wanted, which makes no sense because they knew them when they submitted the claims on my behalf. Now, they won't give me the proper codes/paper work for me to submit the claims on my behalf-they give me paperwork with no insurance codes, etc. I can't figure out why they will not do this (I've spoken to the owner, who is very nice, but still, waiting and waiting for these insurance forms)....this really shouldn't be that difficult. [Note: these visits were for my family members, and I believe that they were happy with their treatment at Flex, so I don't have issue with that. My issue is with their billing department] read more

They charged my insurance company a fortune ($375-425 per half hour of assessment,touch and strength exercises), . At the end of the day I needed a cold laser and lithotriptor which were not offered (and I don't think are offered bythe facility ). Some injuries require different technologies to heal faster (eg Patrick Mahomes used the phoenix theralase) . People and PTs are nice and responsive, and want to help. So ask whether a cold lazer is offered at a place before you start your PT. Also look for a place that charges a flat half hour fee rather than the crazy and astronomical bills some companies or offices may send to your insurance. read more

Can't recommend this place enough! During the pandemic, I threw out my neck so bad I couldn't move it, sleep or function for an entire week. I spent hours looking for a place that was open and finally found Flex. From the first appointment, Stephen has been so helpful and my chronic pain has gone from unbearable to livable. I've been through dozens of medical care professionals New York City, but Stephen is by far the best and most knowledgeable. Following surgery for a fractured wrist, I began PT at Flex with Madison Baughman to regain the use of my wrist. I found Flex to be very much to my liking: quiet, not crowded and best of all, people working one on one with their therapist. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for postpartum recovery (which I think every new mum should do for long term health benefits). Arielle has specialized training in pelvic floor training and is wonderfully patient, professional, and effective. The first two appointments for pelvic floor/ postpartum are one full hour and then it goes to 30-45 minutes. The front desk staff are welcome and responsive. Great experience! read more

The therapist I see at FlexPT Is excellent, but they overbook him--so you may end up with gaps in your treatment because of an inability to get consistent follow-up appointments after the initial assessment. They can waitlist you, which is hit and miss. Though my physical therapist recommended weekly appointments, FlexPT has not been able to deliver that with him. This therapist was highly recommended, but I would have started with a different therapy group had I known about their booking situation. To add insult to injury, I made several requests, in person, in writing, and in phone messages to speak with the manager or owner and never heard back. read more

It is hard to express how highly I feel about flex physical therapy. That are the most knowledgeable, exceptional, professional physical therapists out there. Everyone from the front door, Anne, to the Pt, Beth, to the owner, Joel is incredible. Anne is one of the smartest, most competent, and reliable people I have ever meet. She goes above and beyond when scheduling appointments. If she puts you on a waiting list for a particular day, she actually calls you and follows up that day. If you need an appointment she will even try to switch scheduling around so that everyone is happy. If something needs to get done, you can count on her to do it. Beth, the physical therapist I go to is probably the best in the business. I have referred my entire family to her as well as friends and they feel the same way. Saying that she is incredible at her job is an understatement, she really is exceptional. My sister and I say that she is literally a miracle worker! She's always knows exactly what to massage to take your pain away. I am so lucky to have found her. As for Joel, the owner, you will not find a more knowledgeable physical therapist . He is a wealth of information and you will get that sense the first time you work with him. He has also been extremely kind to me in working with my insurance issues. I rarely give 5 stars or even bother writing, but I want people who need PT to come here or the other location. My daughter in HS (torn ACL and meniscus) is doing so well thanks to the amazing therapists. They were very motivating, excellent in their field (I've been to a bunch of PT's myself) and she's doing very well as her surgeon from HSS said, and he partially credits her PT (as well as his surgery). Flex is really clean, modern and has a first floor entrance --an extra plus when one has walking issues. Uptown one is between Broadway and West End so taxis are very easy to get which is also important. read more

I was referred by a co-worker after suffering an injury. The staff and therapists are fantastic. I enjoy the one-on-one, almost private therapy time for a full half hour. Afterward, the time overlaps slightly with the next patient but the therapist keeps an eye on me as I do assigned exercises and will help if needed. My therapist is Beth. She's very knowledgable, smart and friendly. She and Anne (who schedules the appointments) make an otherwise unfortunate routine (due to circumstances) a much better experience. I've also had the fortune of having sessions with Carlos and Joel when Beth was vacationing. All were equally fantastic. I highly recommend Flex Physical Therapy. read more

I needed a CHT for a fractured elbow on the WEst Side. I saw Joel who spent 15 minutes going over my insurance and then I asked him about ice for my elbow and he thought it was a great idea and proceed to put ice on my elbow for another 10 minutes and then he sold me silicone to put on the scar--this was 25.00. Finally he showed me 2 simple exercises, that I already know about from going to HSS. He also said that I may not always be able to see a CHT, but they all could do the same thing. I agree with that, because he did nothing. He seemed nice enough as a person and the receptionist is very sweet and friendly, but there are much better cht's around. I've been going to Flex Physical Therapy since November after shoulder surgery for a fracture. In one word, the facility is exceptional! The therapists are highly trained, highly skilled, experienced and patient. And Paulette, the receptionist who's usually there when I'm there is lovely, helpful and really organized in dealing with appointments, insurance, etc. I've been working with Joel, the owner of Flex, who is most likely about the best PT you'll find in the city. He's exceptionally knowledgeable, stays with you for the entire 30 minute session, gives exercises that are perfect for your situation, patiently explains them and answers your questions, and then keeps an eye on you as you do exercises on your own. Plus his hands on manipulation and stretching of muscles works absolute wonders! And, very important, the other therapists work with their patients in the same hands on way as Joel. From what I've seen, every one of them is outstanding. You can choose to work with the same therapist each visit or switch around, feeling confident that you'll receive the same outstanding level of therapy. I can't recommend Flex Physical Therapy highly enough! If you're looking for a physical therapy "boutique" where you'll receive individualized, hands on attention in a friendly, pleasant, attractive environment, Flex is for you! I feel so fortunate to have found them and will be recommending them to friends and acquaintances in the "real world" for a long time to come. read more

For both problems, he was able to correctly identify the underlying issues contributing to my injury, and he provided me with a regimen that not only resulted in complete resolution of my pain, but has also prevented re-injury. One of the things that I have discovered about PT is that it really depends whom you get as your physical therapist more than the company you go to. So this review is primarily about my hand therapist MADISON BAUGHMAN more than Flex, although I'm happy to add that the receptionist at both locations where I had my therapy, were very friendly and helpful and both places were very clean, cheery, and well maintained. She was recommended to me by my hand specialist that I saw for my wrist and thumb injury. He too is very good, but I attribute 90% of the improvement of my hand to her skill, expertise and dedication to her patients. I just can't say enough about what a great therapist she is; but I can basically reduce it to one word: PROFESSIONAL. This woman KNOWS what she is doing and she takes care of business. One of the things that I hate about some therapists I've had in the past is that they are attentive the first couple of times you come in but after a few visits, they'll say "OK you know where the equipment you need is, so why don't you go ahead and start the exercises and I'll check in with you when you're close to being done"... and they'll only put some ice on the injury for a few minutes before you go. NOT MADISON! She is with you the WHOLE TIME (well, practically); and she works it. "It" being your injury! She is strong and she'll have you crying "uncle" as she works on your injury. It's worth the ouch! What doesn't hurt is that she is friendly and courteous AND direct! She won't waste your time. I really doubt I would have gotten back the flexibility and strength that she achieved, and it means even more to me because I am a professional pianist and thanks to her, I will continue to be able to play just as well as before. Had a very poor experience here. Their PT Lorelei was very rude to me , would not give me any ideas of what could be causing my chronic knee pain, and got angry at me when I asked her. The PT who had seen me the week had forgot to tell me which exercises to do, and the new PT then proceeded to get mad at me for not doing exercises I had never been told about . The owner, Joel, gave me a call afterwards to apologize for the poor service and he seemed to be looking into the matter. read more

This is an update to my previous review which was only for the bad telephone customer service that put me off making an appointment. The owner of the business reached out and apologized and urged me to give Flex another try. I didn't want to skew my experience by calling him directly, so I again phoned the regular number a few weeks later. The competency level was much higher and there were answers to my questions. It was clear management had re-trained the desk staff. Yay. The rest of this review is for Stephen, the therapist. He did a terrific job of diagnosing a nagging lower back issue that a previous doctor and chiropractor had failed to figure out. (Not the back at all; the psoas!) Stephen is articulate and specific when giving directions and will patiently coach you through stretching exercises until you get them right. He's also good at figuring out how much of a challenge you, the patient, are up for. So I'm pretty happy and the only reason I'm giving four instead of five stars is because I'm into the third week of therapy and waiting to judge the results and entire experience. But really, good on Flex for caring what Yelpers think. read more

I'm aging! Things hurt that never used to. But Joel makes that all go away...except of course the aging. Seriously though, I started with Joel about six weeks ago and he has been very conscientious about not only helping with the pain, but also dealing with the root cause of the issues. Not only does he listen attentively so that he can tailor your time with him to remedy your specific maladies, but he also helps with salves (?) and a gentle massage. As the sole proprietor of his newly minted shop he should of course be overly concerned about customer satisfaction. But, even when he was working with his prior employer, I never had the sense that he was anything but solely focused on helping to alleviate my pain. I hope I never have to see him again...but if I need a PT, he would be my one and only call. read more

I highly recommend Flex Physical Therapy! My first experience with physical therapy was at a practice inside Equinox and it was a physical therapy factory. Someone iced your injury, the therapist saw you, sent you away for exercises and then saw you briefly again. There was ZERO personal attention and not much improvement in my condition. At FPT, I received 100% of the therapist's attention. All the alloted time was devoted to my care and I have found all the therapists to be thoughtful and versed in my condition. Exercises were tailored to my improving condition and exercises adapted to my schedule and needs. Joel is fantastic, as are all the therapists. I am confident the individualized attention and quality therapy I received greatly contributed to my healing and well being. Space is simple and clean. The front desk staff are wonderful also! I have been going to Flex for about four months now, and it has been a great experience! I am not new to physical therapy, and have been nothing but impressed and grateful for my time at Flex. I have had several appointments with all three therapists - Beth, Joel, and Alvin. They are all equally skilled, attentive, and caring. They spend a full 30 minutes with me for each appointment, and always follow-up regarding exercises and my recovery status. I have had negative experiences at other PT places on the UWS (avoid Premier!), so I cannot say how happy I am to have found Flex! I've had a fantastic experience with Flex. I've had appointments with all three therapists (Joel, Alvin and Beth) and they are all very competent, thorough and friendly . They work as a team and each have slight differences in how they work which is helping me recover faster. What I love the most there is that I get individualized attention for the whole session.
