A few months ago, I suffered a minor back injury. I asked my fussy physician to suggest a physical therapist, and she referred me to Zion. I was apprehensive as I'd never been to a physical therapist before. I called Zion and reached Saul, who listened attentively to my issues and responded thoughtfully. I was impressed, and I asked to see him right away. He wasn't available, but Carolyn was -- to my great good fortune. I met her shortly after and trusted her right away, knowing I was in good hands. Right from the start, Carolyn was knowledgeable, thorough and sensible. She diagnosed my issues well, reassuring me that some of my worries were unfounded, and suggesting that I concentrate instead on my core and balance, especially since I'm middle-aged and balance will become only more important as I get older. I've been seeing the toll falls can take on older people, even people who were once very active. My back started feeling better right away, as Carolyn had predicted, and we embarked on a once-a-week core/balance program. I've been coming to Zion for a few months now, and I see lots of different clients here, with all kinds of different issues. Each client seems to be treated respectfully and well. The premises are well-equipped, attractive and pleasant, with fresh water and coffee available at all times. I went to Zion several years ago on the recommendation of the staff at JackRabbit when I stopped in to get a new set of running shoes. I'd been having some persistent pain in one of my hamstrings after long runs and none of the stretches I knew how to do on my own were helpful. I was assigned to work with Staci Levine who used a variety of techniques to help address the issue. Over the course of work that we did during our sessions, and take-home strategies that I could practice on my own, we were able to completely resolve the issue and it's never come back. Beyond the practical, she's incredibly friendly and made me feel very comfortable. I felt like I was in particularly good hands as she's a runner herself and sometimes was even training for the very same races I was doing. Over the years, I've stopped back in many times for other exercise-related issues which, more often than not, have probably come about from me not following the advice she's given in the past! Nevertheless, she's always happy to jump back in and help me work through whatever it is I've done to myself. The space itself is great - well located off two express train lines (4/5 and Q), bright, unusually spacious and airy, and the rest of the staff is lovely. I highly recommend Zion and in particular Jonathan Rodriguez, one of the PTs on staff. Unlike some other places where the PT spends some time with you and then hands you off to an assistant or bounces between patients, at Zion you get full attention for the whole session. I'm a longtime marathon runner now in one of the older age groups and had been dogged by an unidentified injury to my hamstring for more than a year. One doctor thought it was my hip; another thought it was sciatica. A different PT thought my SI joint was out of whack. My head was spinning. Then I discovered an article on the internet from the Zion website about chronic hamstring injuries and was impressed, so I called out of the blue, knowing nothing about them and with no referral. They set me up with Jonathan and he gave me a 60-minute evaluation that was the most comprehensive exam I have ever had from a PT. He is a superb listener, which was key because I was describing about 12 months of medical history. He determined that I had pretty severe muscle weakness in my hip rotators, the muscles that stabilize the lower body when you run. He created a custom-made exercise program for me that we did on site while he supervised, and that I also did at home. I have been a patient at Zion PT for the past two years, working with Staci Levine who was recommended to me by my gastroenterologist. To say that my pelvic floor issues are complex is an understatement, and I am eternally grateful to Staci for all her support and help in this complex journey full of setbacks, anxieties and worries. I can't say enough about my experience at Zion Physical Therapy. This place is the best and as good as physical therapy gets in NYC. As an active runner, I've suffered several nagging injuries over the years. More importantly, I've always found it difficult to find a practice that could not only treat my pain but also educate me about my body's patterns, weaknesses and abilities so as to prevent future injuries and better my performance. All of this changed when I met Amanda from Zion PT. Amanda is a VERY skilled, kind and thoughtful physician who is incredibly knowledgeable and experienced in her field. I had a tight pelvic floor, I think because I was holding stress there, and it got to the point where I couldn't sit through an entire movie without having to get up and pee at least once, or enjoy sex, which was over before it began. Francesca Warner not only worked on the pelvic floor muscles and muscles around them (e.g., abs, legs), but also gave me "homework" that I continue to do even now that I'm finished with PT. These small lifestyle changes---a nightly stretching routine, trying to find time to meditate, going to yoga but avoiding certain poses, remembering to let go of tension periodically---have actually improved my life outside of my symptoms some (who would have thought pelvic floor PT would help me sleep better?) but more importantly, they have helped with my symptoms, as did the PT sessions themselves. Francesca is very knowledgeable about what she does, and seemed to genuinely care about my progress. She also made a situation that could be pretty awkward, exceedingly not-awkward! I can't recommend Francesca/Zion enough. When I first came in, she said I had eight out of five tightness in my pelvic floor (yikes!) so even though Yelp only lets me go up to five, consider this an eight out of five star rating. read more

For anyone who doesn't want the detail: long story short, Staci and Zion are amazing and you should schedule an appointment if you have a need for a PT. Longer version: Staci was recommended to me by my coach. For background, I run relatively seriously at various points in the year (up to 50-60 miles). I had been having a nagging issue with my foot that actually derailed my marathon. It had gotten largely better but not fully. I had seen a few doctors and PT - they all said the same thing. Rest. That solution never worked or got the the root of the problem. Staci took the time to hear what was going on with my body, made some good stretching and flexibility exercises, and the problem has gone away. I continue to go for preventative care as well. For anyone who has a need for a Physical Therapist (particularly, but not exclusively of course) I would HIGHLY recommend Staci and Zion. Friendly, experienced, knowledgeable, effective and thoughtful are the first few words that come to mind. They really try to make you better for the long term, which is the only way to really heal and prevent future injuries. Couldn't be happier with the experience. read more

I am 56 year old active cyclist who has to deal with a number of past injuries to keep going. Most profound of my injuries was a broken leg. While having a great orthopedic surgeon was important, the most important members of of my medical team are the folks at Zion PT. Staci who drove me to recovery was a godsend. Without her personal investment in my rehab I never would have been walking and cycling as quickly as I had. We set goals and she committed to helping me achieve them. She knew when to push me , when to give me a break but was always my cheerleader who had unconditional faith in my recovery. Anything less was just not something she even considered. Even the difficult and painful aspects of my therapy were always met with a smile, good humor and encouragement. Since my broken leg several years ago I have completed many long distance rides including one 300 mile ride and one 400 mile ride within 18 months of my injury. I was recently treated by physical therapists Saul and Carolyn when I experienced a severe bout of plantar fasciitis which resulted in debility and excruciating pain. As a physician-patient, I know for a fact that time and supportive therapy are the key ingredients to a successful healing of this painful condition. I've been recommended Zion PT by friends that talked about this place as their goto PT for running injuries. And I must say I only have positive feedback about them. Carolyn helped me getting rid of a shin splint problem that was bothering me for a while. What I found there (and is clearly not what you get at your typical PT in NYC...): - a deep/precise analysis of my injury with many questions during the first sessions to try finding the root cause - Carolyn really knows what she is talking about and explains with simple words what's wrong and how to fix it. Plus she's a better runner than you, don't try to compete with her ! - 1 on 1 sessions of 1 hour (vs 45 minutes at other places where they have 3 people at the same time...) - a "sports-oriented" place: they don't stop when you're just feeling "ok" but when you're actually better than before the injury. I've increased my weekly mileage significantly and PRd on both 1M and half marathon while I was still going there without waking up any shin pains. Conclusion: highly recommended! read more

I was a patient at Zion for 1 year after ACL/meniscus surgery. With the help of the amazing Allison Gould i am now back to running and tennis. She was extremely supportive of me but also tough on me when I wasn't working hard enough. She was very easy to talk to, extremely knowledgeable about sports injuries and very passionate about her patients. She often squeezed me in if I needed to miss my usual appointment and gave me different regimens of workouts to do at home. She helped turn a really crappy situation into something that I could enjoy by mixing up various workouts and keeping things fun. Her goofy and fun loving nature makes you forget how hard you're working. She was a constant motivator and amazing at what she does. Awhile back, my doctor recommended that I go to physical therapy for an orthopedic problem I was having. Honestly, I wasn't very enthused about that because my one PT experience had been far from stellar. But I did some research and found Zion just around the corner. As a nurse, I have high standards and tend to be very discerning. Not expecting much, I made an appointment. I was assigned to Allison Gould. I liked her on a personal level immediately and was pleased that she turned out to be just the therapist I needed. Smart, professional and extremely good at what she does. A few months later, my husband was having problems with his balance. You guessed it! I made him an appointment with Allison. As a typical doctor, he always thinks he knows best. Poor Allison! He went but under duress. When he returned from his appointment, he was obviously pleased and has gone back several times. I went to Zion PT after exploring many places in the UES to seek treatment. I had a very serious skiing fracture in early 2018 (Comminuted Bicondylar Tibial Plateau Fracture Type VI), which required several months of PT after a 6 hour surgery to rebuild the bone with a lot of hardware (3 plates, 17 screws). After much searching and several tryouts, Zion PT was absolutely the best choice. The facilities are top notch but, more importantly, the staff is the most qualified and prepared to deal with complex recoveries like mine. This is not a Medicare milking outfit, these are serious therapist helping people recover from serious ailments which require one-on-one attention and expert care. I had Ray take care of my leg, and I can attest to his expertise and professionalism. But, whenever he was not available, I was lucky to find that the 2 other therapists which helped me were equally qualified and provided first class care and advise. Highly recommended!! read more

I started seeing Francesca for pelvic floor work last September at the recommendation of my gastroenterologist. I have been working with Jonathan at Zion for several months now after I had a stress fracture in my hip last year. Zion came highly recommended to me and my experience there has definitely exceeded my expectations. Jonathan has been wonderful to work with and has truly helped me overcome my hip pain. He has created a thoughtful and easy to follow exercise plan for me, and he will email me with new exercises to do at home after every session. He is really easy to work with and really takes the time to listen to how your body is feeling. Last summer I tore my meniscus in my right knee playing basketball and after a very rushed attempt to push me into surgery at an orthopedist a friend of mine recommended I go see Ally at Zion Physical Therapy. In my first visit Ally reviewed my MRI report with me, explained what was keeping my leg from straightening and what the steps were that we were going to take to try and fix it instead of putting holes in my body. Over the next several months she worked with me, explaining every step of the way and being sure to keep me motivated throughout this difficult task. I began to see Staci Levine at Zion Physical Therapy almost two years ago to help with my pelvic floor dysfunction. Reading about the therapy in advance ( external and internal manual therapy ) was a bit terrifying for me. I had thought I would be embarrassed and feel uncomfortable. Within minutes of meeting with Staci I knew I was going to get the treatment I needed as her knowledge and compassion took all of my fears away. Her sessions have helped me manage my dysfunction and understand triggers and resolutions.
