I enjoyed my first visit to Speakeasy Yoga! I visited the heated studio for a "simple" class. The flow was easy to follow and instruction clear and concise. I worked up a nice sweat and felt great after the class. I'm looking forward to trying the unheated class on Wayne as well. It bears mentioning that this space is beautiful. Speakeasy Yoga is a true Dayton gem! I am currently visiting my family for the holidays and wanted to continue my practice. At best, I was expecting just okay. Speakeasy yoga is an exceptional yoga experience. Both Edwin and Sarah (instructors) have been nothing short of amazing so far! Both were welcoming and warm, their competency and proficiency in their craft was evident, and they conducted overall great sessions that my body and spirit appreciated. The vintage glam decor is simply fantastic. As someone who has practiced in several major cities, this studio could easily be located in NYC, Chicago or another big city. This review is not neccesarily fully about Speakeasy Yoga as I got to enjoy a wonderful Yelp night as they had the Piada food tour fall through to give everyone a taste of the new menu. From what I could see the location was extremely spacious and clean and definitely did not have the smell of some yoga studios in the area lol. The event was truly incredible though. Piada has a dope new menu coming out that is more health friendly and this event included a session of Yoga and then the after party was the new menu. Speakeasy Yoga I will be back soon! I cannot recommend Speakeasy Yoga enough. The classes are consistently high quality and accessible for most yogis. The studio is beautiful, peaceful, and clean with great energy and amenities. Speakeasy's owner, Tori, actively solicits feedback when making decisions about policies and operates her business as a community-first (inside the studio and beyond) organization. She has been a leader in action through the COVID pandemic and makes hard decisions based on the wellbeing of her students and the outside world. It is also evident that Tori and her team constantly strive to learn and grow in cultural competence and respect for the origins of the yoga practice. The professionalism, open mindedness, and respect with which Speakeasy Yoga operates is inspiring. Stopped in while I was in the area on business. I was able to schedule and pay for my class online. Showed up, signed a wavier and enjoyed a class at this nice, well appointed studio. While it may be a bit over the top with the decor (a bit like doing yoga at pottery barn. lol. I mean vintage couches?) it's a nice location (I was at the red door one). The teacher was professional and helpful. I got a nice yoga high was pushed a bit and started the day invigorated. 10/10 would pose again. read more

Absolutely love this hot yoga studio! This is by far my favorite hot yoga studio in the area at 90-95 degrees! Instructors are challenging, heat is always perfect and I always feel ready to tackle my day especially after a 6am class! I also love that there is a shower with nice shower products stocked so I can get ready for work there right after! Oh and I love their specials and discounts for student, military, fire fighter, police, + EMT, that is really awesome! Parking is also free on the streets that early in the morning! read more

I was in Dayton on a business trip and ran across this yoga. Super cute quaint Studio! Welcoming and open. Had all the amenities a yogie could need if forgotten! From hair ties to towels and mats, nice bathrooms and shower facilities. Also a plus the instructor was very good and kept the flow moving at a steady healthy heart climbing pace! read more

I am quite disappointed in one of the local yoga studios in Dayton, Speakeasy Yoga. I also don't usually like to name names when I discuss things like this online, however, I am making an exception because I am extremely frustrated and feel like this studio is not practicing the "yamas" or the ethical principles of yoga with how they are running their business. This post is to explain what happened to me with this particular studio so that other yogis may avoid similar situations in the future. Anyway, late last year in Dec 2019, I paid $800 for an annual pass at Speakeasy Yoga. I have purchased annual passes from various studios before, and usually an annual pass gets you 12 months of unlimited in-studio yoga classes. I specifically bought this pass to attend the studio's in-studio hot yoga classes. Speakeasy Yoga closed their doors in March of 2020, and have not yet reopened, even though the ban in Ohio was lifted months ago. Because the studio didn't reopen in June (when many others did), they couldn't hold up their end of providing what I paid for. Instead, they created online videos (in Spring of 2020) that people could watch--basically the same thing as YouTube yoga, which is free. My guess is that it was created as a way so Speakeasy Yoga didn't have to give annual pass holders their money back when they chose to keep their doors closed. When trying to dispute my request for a refund owner said that I purchased my annual pass for either in-studio classes or for online classes... however, online classes weren't even a thing when I purchased my annual pass in December of 2020... so this logic doesn't make sense. When the online videos started, I asked the owner nicely for a refund (of the money to cover the amount of months I could no longer use). I explained that I would never have paid that amount for online classes and wouldn't ever use them (and I haven't). I have continued to ask for my refund over the past several months. I explained that never would have paid $600 or 75% of the total amount (for my annual pass) for 100% online classes, especially when I can get the same thing for free off of Youtube. I thought that a refund of $600 (75% of the amount I paid for my annual pass) seemed fair to ask for because I only went to 25% of the months of the classes I paid for (or 3 months) due to studio closure. I also had no use for the online videos. The studio owner tried to tell me that my math was all wrong because individual classes cost $15, and then multiplied that by the number of classes I attended to give me her estimated cost. While, this math does add up, I will state that I never ever EVER pay $15 per class for yoga at their studio (or any studio). Instead, I purchase monthly unlimited or annual unlimited (for in-studio yoga classes). It would not have be cost effective for me to buy classes individually (when at that point in time I attending 5-7 hot yoga classes per week). If the owner expected me to pay $15 per class, she never should have created monthly unlimited or annual unlimited passes (which were created to be more cost effective for clients). I explained to the owner to check my purchase history, and that she would see that over the past two years I have always purchased monthly unlimited or annual passes. Anyway, I've been more frustrated lately because I heard that Speakeasy was staying closed now for renovations, not for COVID-19. Though, the recent spike in cases may change that... A few weeks ago, I received an email asking me to purchase items from their clothing line, and stating that as an annual pass holder I'd get 20% off. Honestly, I do not want to purchase anything else from this studio. I don't want to give the studio any more of my time or money at this point. The owner eventually offered me $200, as a way to appease me, but it felt insulting. $200 (or 25% of the original cost) is the amount that I would have actually owed the studio for the 3 months that it was actually open in 2020. What I want is a fair refund for 75% of what I paid last December, or $600. This is the amount of money (based on the annual pass cost), that would cover the 9 months of in-studio yoga classes that I had to miss out on because the owner chose to keep her studio closed. Although some may not agree with my position, I would encourage them to put themselves in my shoes. I want to be clear that my actions with this situation were not done out of greed or frugality, but rather the principle of the matter. Additionally, there could have been a scenario where I accepted these circumstances willingly--if the situation had been handled differently and with more respect and sincerity. I continue to support small business owners that operate with integrity and I encourage other to do so as well. I am writing to address the response to my dispute made by Tori Reynolds from the Speakeasy Yoga Studio. My correspondence with Tori regarding the effect of COVID-19 on the business, began on June 6th. When I signed up for the annual unlimited pass in December of 2019 at a promotional sale price, neither party could have anticipated the abrupt and necessary closing that took place. Although virtual yoga classes were offered in place of in-person classes during the pandemic, at the time the annual pass was actually purchased, there was never any indication that patrons might be forced to accept virtual classes as an alternative. In June, when the other local studio reopened, but Speakeasy chose voluntarily not to, I began my correspondence with the business owner. Tori had not yet committed to extending anyone's passes once the studio would eventually reopen, which seemed to imply that the virtual classes were being offered in place of what was paid for as an appeasement meant to justify keeping customers' money. This is particularly important because nearly all of the classes I attend at Speakeasy are hot classes, the 80-90 degree heat being the most important component of the class that I can't get at home. Not only would the possibility of substituting virtual classes have precluded my purchasing of an annual pass from the beginning, but plenty of high quality teachers provide classes for free through YouTube. Over the several months of correspondence with the business owner, I was never provided a definitive number of months the pass would be extended after the studio reopened, and in fact, Tori did not specifically commit to covering the full number of all the missed months of classes until after this dispute had already been filed. This suggested to me that Tori had deliberately avoided answering the question, which raised the concern that she was leaving herself the option to offer an extension shorter than the period the studio has been closed. I also harbored a legitimate concern that after all the time the studio would have spent closed, it may not have been possible to reopen at all due to the loss of revenue. Although I am sympathetic to the difficulty small business owners have faced over the course of this pandemic, the fact remains that the risk inherent in owning a business falls on the owner, and not their patrons. The studio does specifically state that they do not offer refunds for any reason, however, this does not release the owner from any financial liability if the services are withheld, especially when it is voluntary. Regarding the value of the annual pass, the business owner argued that a proposed refund should be based on the value of single-class passes, which is absolutely a logical fallacy of false equivalence. To argue that the higher cost of single-class passes can be used to calculate the refund on a pass that spans an entire year is akin to returning a bulk product to a wholesale store and being told that the refund is going to be calculated based on its price at a gas station. The fact that part of the pass was used becomes irrelevant in this matter, because there is currently no possible way to use the remaining portion. To be clear, the 25 classes that were attended in the time period between when the pass began on December 4th and when the studio closed on March 15th, Again, although the studio's policy is that no refunds are issued for any reason, this doesn't give someone the right to withhold services they have already been compensated for. The annual unlimited pass I purchased on December 4th of 2019 was used for 25 classes, over a time period of 102 days, ending on March 15th of 2020. I purchased the annual unlimited pass for $800 at the reduced rate for the holiday sale, and I've explained previously in this letter why the value of the regular full price of the annual unlimited pass or a single-class pass are irrelevant to this discussion. I requested a 75% refund totaling $600, as the pass was useful for approximately a quarter of the time intended. To be more precise, the 102 days the pass was used account for 27.95% of the 365 days it was intended for. As such, if the business owner would refund $576, that would be the most accurate calculation by my reckoning. read more
