Spatz is the BEST BREAD for certain things not for your everything loaf. But I absolutely love it for toast with homemade gee and homemade Jam. I have a list of things I love spatz with. If your a first time buyer you won't be disappointed and I'm sry to say But if you are disappointed then you just don't know what good bread is. So get out there and live alil. Yes, they are open! I think so many people think they are closed because it seems that they close their doors once they are sold out, so they must sell out pretty quickly! I finally got there early enough in the day to see more of the assortments that they have! Cookies, muffins, pinwheels, cinnamon rolls, fry cakes aka donuts and bread. Lots to choose from! I love that their prices are reasonable and my family loves their glazed and plain fry cakes. I tried their chocolate cream cheese muffin and it was really good! They could probably add some frosting and some sprinkles on top and sell it as a fancy cupcake for way more money the toffee cookie was good too! I will add, I tried their cinnamon roll a while ago and I wasn't the biggest fan. It was big, but didn't have much flavor and the frosting was really meh, I don't know how else to describe it. It wasn't sweet, and our kids actually didn't even want to eat it. ‍ So I'll put that out there, just so people can know what to expect. Honestly, I am loving this place! Unfortunately tho the bakery needs help if you for whatever reason want to have a job as a baker or anything else there pls apply. This bakery uses the cheapest flour and their baked goods are disgusting. The bread has a funky smell. If you find some thing that's small and black on any of the corners of the bread, it's probably a mouse dropping. Not sure why anyone would eat their bread or their donuts. The health department needs to pay this establishment a visit. read more

my family has been spatz bread purchasers for more than 50 years. 2 sisters living in kansas always take some back with them when they come home for a visit. your bread has always been 5 stars. however, our last few purchases make us think there has been a change. we can't decide if it is the actual ingredients, or if it is in the proofing/baking process. but, the change is not welcome. the texture and flavor are not the same. now it is just a regular ho hum loaf of bread. sorry, but we can only give it 2.5 stars. please return this wonderful bread back to its' 5 star status. read more

Tiny bakery that's been around forever - delicious! No seating inside, just a small counter to order their famous white bread and baked goods. Donuts are great and white chocolate dipped sugar cookies only made during the holidays are amazing!!! We make sure and get back there every time we're in town. So I was in Saginaw on business and one of our parting gifts from the company hosting us (Fullerton Tool) was a loaf of Spatz's famous white bread. While I thought this an odd gift, when I got home and made a grilled cheese with this sublimely soft yet firm bread my mind was blown. The taste and texture are unmatched and it crusts up so well when grilled in a pan with butter. I did not see the bakery or go in but you can bet if I ever go back to Michigan this little bakery will be on my list. read more

I love this bread, it's something right out of the early 20th century. Spatz is excellent and nicely old fashioned. Their packaging has not changed. That said if their bread isn't quickly eaten then the wax paper/paper package will not led the bread turn stale, it just turns into a huge cracker. Even then that's good because it's great in a soup, like a cracker. Every time I go into the Saginaw area I try to buy a few loafs of this bread. It's the taste of times long past. read more

They are well known for their toast bread, which freezes quite well and tastes marvelous when toasted. It's an old fashioned bakery with great prices. This bread was the best but for the last year now they have went down a lot...paying for air..letting it rise to high because of less bread they use it could be...the texture is not the same,what's it use to be......they are letting the bread rise to much having big holes in the slice and will be in about have the loaf that way.. they are cutting the the slices to thin..they have change that also ..when you have toast,use to be the best but now you are eating cheap piece of toast..will fall apart when you take bit. This fresh, local bread is about as no-frills as you get. A bit dry, with a very nice crumb, it is the best toasting bread I have ever had. Arriving in an old-fashioned waxed paper wrapper and red-and-white logo bag, the sight of a new loaf of Spatz bread makes me drop everything I'm doing and head to the toaster. It freezes beautifully, just in case you buy yourself a dozen loaves and don't want them to go bad. Do yourself a favor and hunt down this elusive loaf. I have never lived in Saginaw yet this has always been my favorite bread. My grandfather mails it to us in Oklahoma; when my father visits Saginaw he brings an empty suitcase with him just to bring home a dozen loaves; we keep a supply in the freezer and tearfully chomp at the last heel when we run out. Home-style white bread. Sliced! At its best toasted and buttered. They also have wheat bread and rolls but I've never tried them. Great bread and Lemon filled muffins (cup cakes). The bread will not last long because of no preservatives AND you will devour it. It makes great French toast, and peanut/jelly sandwiches.
