I had the green goddess smoothie. It tasted like an ice cream almost because it was so rich and creamy, which I did not expect. Listed on the menu are only fruits and vegetables in the smoothie so I expected it to taste much different. The size was generous. They also serve wraps and salads. I might go back to try something else but I had high hopes and left a bit disappointed.

We go somewhat frequently and this is the reality more often than not. No welcome or greeting as you enter the store. They don't make eye contact. They stand around and talk while you wait. They have their backs turned to you. They act as if the customers are an inconvenience. Unless of course a random friend walks in, then they greet them warmly ahead of all other guests and shower them free samples. Add in the gossip and cellphones and it feels like walking into a middle school sleepover.

They have different styles to choose from when choosing your type of poke bowl. I went with the kilauea- which had a choice of protein, brown rice, edamame, scallions, cabbage, chopped peanuts, wonton crisps, avocado, chili peanut sauce. I got half ahi and salmon which was 6 bucks on top of the 14 bucks for the bowl (north jersey is so pricey!). We ordered online and picked up which was pretty easy to do.

The experience reminds me of many of the local, fast-casual restaurants we've enjoyed while visiting the Hawaiian islands - although I didn't see an option to have SPAM with any of the dishes. Place your order at the counter, then have a seat at a high-top table while your food is prepared to order and served in plastic 'to go' containers with disposable eco-friendly forks. The taste and quality of the food does come at a price, as the prices are slightly higher than most of the other fast-casual options in the area, but it's worth it to me (as it should be to you). I had the Loco Moco bowl ($20), comprised of kalua pulled pork, brown rice (substituted for the white rice it should come with), cabbage and carrot slaw, scallions, crispy onions, and topped with a fried egg and kickin' lime sauce, which was VERY tasty. My dining companion had the Shaka Bowl with grilled chicken ($20), comprised of zucchini noodles, carrots, cucumber, scallions, cabbage, pickled onions, mango, and sweet chili sauce, which she really enjoyed. We will definitely be back! PRO TIP: Shaka Kitchen doesn't have a private parking lot, but there is plenty of on-street parking off South Street. Bring change or use the ParkMobile app for the meters ($1 per hour) Monday through Saturday from 8am til 6PM; all street meters are free Monday through Saturday after 6pm and all day on Sunday.
