Sparky is just amazing with kids. Our 5 year old who was extremely anxious about surfing came out of the 1 hour class saying that it was the best thing that she did in Hawaii. He also gave our 3 year old a trial run for 5 minutes after which she is waiting to get her own surfing class the next time we're in Hawaii. My husband and I had the "semi private" surf lesson this morning and it was one of the best times we had in Hawaii so far. We both have surfed once in San Diego (10yrs ago) but never had lesson before. We started on the shore and learned how to stand on the board. Sparky went through the steps, and they were easy to remember. Then we went into the water and started paddling. When we get to the certain area, Sparky pushed the board forward and I was able to stand up and 'surf'! In my previous experience, I barely stood up on the board so it was super exciting to be able to stand on the board and surf. Going through the steps on the shore definitely helped. One of the things I loved was that we didn't have to carry the heavy surf board all the way to the beach! This saved lots of energy for the paddling. I wanted a day on the ocean for my birthday, so I found the Sparky's Surf School and couldn't have choose better. I asked for a photographer. Well a can say that I had my best birthday party surfing. Sparky was a perfect choice for our family and a highlight of our trip. We had never surfed before, and I was impressed with how he easily taught a group of 5 with varied ages. We're so glad we found & chose Sparky as our surf instructor! He was everything we were looking for: friendly, clear in his instructions, on time, and really worked hard to get us on waves. It was our 7&9 year olds' first time surfing and they got up within minutes. We also benefited from his guidance in being able to stand up & stay up. Highly recommended for families looking for a fun surf experience! Our family of four included two kids who had never surfed before (ages 7 and 8), one adult who still needed help learning how to catch waves without assistance, and one experienced adult seeking tips at the next level. We contacted Sparky the day we arrived and described our situation. He was able to fit us in the very next morning through a combination of three, consecutive, 1-hour lessons. He first gave a joint lesson to our kids, with my husband in the water for added assistance. We had our kids wear life jackets bc they are not used to the ocean, but the water was so shallow and tame that it really wasn't necessary. Thank you, Sparky, for humoring us! Once out on the water, (following about 10-15 min of on shore training), one of our kids initially panicked, but he was able to help her set aside her fears about "the animals under the water" and both kids got up and surfed on their own! It was a blast to watch the kids progress so quickly. My surf lesson was next. Sparky first checked on my pop-up skills and we talked about how to turn on a large foam board, which I found extremely helpful once I was out on the water. When we paddled out, Sparky provided periodic assistance so that I wouldn't completely tire myself out before catching my first wave. He gave clear instructions and I enjoyed many fun waves. He kept it light and fun for the entire hour. I did crash into another surfer (not sure whose fault it was) and there were many, many people in the water. Finally, my husband took his turn. He reported a great hour as well, although he was a bit frustrated with the number of people in the water. In summary, these are my thoughts: 1. Great match for a fun hour of surfing. 2. Waikiki offers easy waves for practicing. 3. Sparky is positive and provides all the boards, rashies, and life jackets as needed, and can accommodate a variety of levels (though not simultaneously without an additional instructor) 4. There are 2 photo options if you are interested-- sparky offers photos taken from the water and there is also a freelance guy who takes photos from the shore. We chose the freelance, which was cheaper, and the photos were much better that what our iphones could achieve. 5. Waikiki was stock full of surfers in the water, many of whom are learning and/or don't know surfing etiquette. Not a good location for someone who is more advanced. read more
