Sparky was a great surfing instructor! Even I managed to stand up on the surf board during our first lesson. We did a private lesson with 2 people which worked great- we did some instruction together and then he would focus on one person while the other person was paddling back. You could tell that he is invested in having us beginners learn and to have a good time. A few days later we happened to run into him when trying to surf on our own and he gave us a few more pointers; he even told a random guy who hasn't taken a lesson with him that the random board that was rented to him was wrong for him and should be exchanged. We had surf lessons with Sparky today and truly it was the highlight of our vacation. Sparky met us a little before the set time of 10am at the meeting spot. We immediately hit the sand and got to work learning the basics. Sparky legit took interest in us, our story, and seeing us be successful on the board. It didn't take long and we were in the water. Sparky and Todd, You both are such amazing instructors. This is my first time surf boarding and I was pretty much scared for my life because I'm m an "ok" swimmer. Any ways it was myself and 3 other friends. Sparky instructed us on how to start and get on the board and was very straight forward and did not waste any time ! And as simple as he made it seem , my group and we had the best time !!! I had a small top and i had to keep readjusting as I fell off . Sparky noticed and was so kind to lend me his wet suit top because he notice my confidence wasn't there because I was too worried about my top falling off . And when he lend me the wet suit I totally felt that confidence !!! By the end of our time I got about 4-5 straight surf boarding without falling !! What an AMAZING EXPERIENCE! I can NOT praise this company enough! There were 5 of us (3 adults and 2 youths), so we were anticipating 2 instructors. We showed up and there were 3! 2 instructors worked with the olders, while 1 solely worked with the 8 year old. We all had a blast! Loved that he got boards ready for me right on the beach. Waikiki is like his backyard and he knows literally everyone there. I had a great time as a beginner learning how to surf with him. I had a wonderful first-ever surf lesson with Sparky! I made my first trip to Hawaii in May 2021 and decided that I needed to take a surfing lesson at Waikiki as part of the trip. We started the lesson with some up-downs on the board on the beach to learn the mechanics, and soon we were paddling out into the water. As we got further out, I started to panic, feeling claustrophobic and way out of my comfort zone. He must have seen it on my face, because he hopped off his board to show how shallow the water was, assured me we wouldn't be by other surfers, and gave me little tasks to do and things to think about to help me feel more in control. Paddle by paddle we made it to our practice area, which sure enough was shallow and filled with soft sand in case of a fall. With Sparky's coaching, I was standing up by my second wave, much to my shock. I didn't think I'd be able to stand up at all, and instead I was able to stand on 50% of the waves we tried. I was absolutely thrilled with that success and honestly couldn't believe how far I had surpassed my expectations. All thanks to the specific feedback and prime location provided by my instructor. He did an amazing job coaching me not only through the mechanics of surfing but also through the anxiety of stepping outside my comfort zone, and I couldn't be happier with my experience.
