Let me cut to the chase: E Oahu Surf Tours is *the ultimate*! This is really two reviews in one: one for surf instruction, and one for the island tour - - but in both cases, E Oahu Surf Tours was off the hook! We are a family of experienced surfers with a couple of newbies working on getting up for the first time. Prior to our recent trip to Oahu, we scoured Yelp for outfits offering surf lessons/surf tours; based on stellar reviews, we booked E Oahu Surf Tours for a full day, and hoped for the best. Little did we know we would have one of the most awesome, memorable days of our entire trip to the islands!
Edrick (the 'E' of 'E Oahu Surf Tours') met us in the morning at our Waikiki hotel with boards already loaded (previous to our trip, we'd established board sizes) and took us to a nearby spot (Ala Moana Bowls) that offered solid rights and lefts. Edrick was very careful to explain the reef/channel structure and dynamics to the experienced folks along with a reminder of lineup etiquette. He assumes nothing, and is careful to explain the nuances of each spot so you understand that break's rules, but does so in a humble way that makes you feel like he's really got your back and won't put you in a bad situation. Once the experienced folks were out, he worked with the two newbies of the family and did a stellar job of helping them both learn how to paddle, navigate waves, pop up, and catch wave after wave after wave!
After a couple hours, we loaded back up and headed to the North Shore (about an hour's drive), but before departing Honolulu, E detoured to a place that offered the best acai bowls and smoothies we've ever had. When we arrived at the North Shore town of Hale'iwa, we stopped in at North Shore Surf Shop to have a look around (definitely hit that place if you're in the area, it's super chill). Went on to explore the Hale'iwa break, Waimea Bay (relatively flat conditions, so we went rock jumping), and visited Pipeline - - all remarkable in their own way for their natural beauty and power. Along the way, E provided a running commentary of the local area, interesting historical facts, and observations about local customs. We finished our North Shore tour with the most incredible meal at Rajanee Thai in Hale'iwa before returning to Honolulu.
About Edrick himself: as a longtime surfer still competing as a pro on the WSL tour (have no doubt, the dude can really shred!), it was no surprise how Edrick is able to expertly assess where you are with your skills and provide recommendations and pointers that help you progress. E is however much more than an outstanding teacher dispensing a wealth of surfing knowledge. He is really an ambassador for Hawaiian surfing, and most fittingly, he is full of aloha. He eagerly and readily pours into you his knowledge of, and love and appreciation for, the sport of surfing and for the culture of Hawaii. Edrick is very outgoing yet humble, kind yet funny, entertaining, multi-talented, and genuinely wants you to have a good experience. On the drive home from North Shore, he kept us laughing with impromptu raps and even played a couple of tracks he'd recorded - - this guy is talented beyond belief! And everyone (and I mean everyone) knows Edrick and speaks well of him.
The only thing I'd recommend to E Oahu Surf Tours as a business would be to improve visibility to pricing ahead of the tour. In advance of our visit, my wife asked via email several times for a cost estimate covering board rental, lessons, and the day's tour, and we never really got an answer until we met up with Edrick the morning of our tour. Thankfully, his prices were very reasonable, and based on the crazy fun we had that day, would say it was money very, very well spent! But it would have helped us for planning to know the cost in advance.
Bottom line: if you are thinking of taking surfing lessons on Oahu or want to explore the island, I whole-heartedly recommend Edrick and E Oahu Surf Tours! You will not be disappointed, and will come away with a whole new appreciation of and love for the ocean and the sport of surfing!
