We have been ordering here for over 10 years. Our favorite thing was the breadsticks. Ordered two orders of 6 breadsticks along with pizza tonight. Every single breadstick was burned. There were even burned spots on the pizza. Called to inform since we have come here so long rather than leaving a negative review and thought they would say sorry and maybe say they would give a credit or free order of breadsticks next time, or maybe say to call tomorrow and talk to someone. Instead I was put on hold and a girl came to the phone and said I needed to go through DoorDash which was understandable, but I asked is this how your breadsticks usually come now and she said yes that's how they come with an attitude and hung up. Called back, she answered, asked to get a name, she hung up. Called a bit later and Gabe answered and before I could ask for the managers name, he then also hung up on me. I am indelicate with that term, for unfortunately, this location had no neighborhood to speak of at all (busy, trucking route with industrial feel all over). Hence, i would recommend the one further south on MLK, closer to NE Fremont, and newer as well. Sparky's has some wonderful, magical dough spell cast upon it... in fact, I had the opportunity to meet the young 20 something entrepreneur who opened this branch a few years ago.. He told me of his dream to own his own business, and the solid, wise steps to make it come to fruition. Their service is good, they're friendly, and they serve up wonderful slices! (it's truly the twists that got me all twisted in a knot of giddiness) They sell by the slice and occasionally have deals with coupons. In contrast to MI PIzza Pub, theirs is a thicker, more chewy, soft kind of dough, and puffier. The latter serves it larger, bit more crispy (though neither approximate NY-style.. hello to my local Gioia!!!!), and with more of the 'gourmet' toppings. S came through for me in pinches, when, bleary-eyed and in a full state of malaise, I had to stuff something down my throat before another 12 hour shift at Emanuel raised its premature head. read more

I have been going to Sparky's pizza for over 10 years. And this specific location over a dozen times. Everything's always been great- until today. I ordered a large breadstick for take-out. When I brought it home it was completely raw dough on the inside. I totally understand that the breadsticks are a signature item you have, and they're always so soft and perfectly cooked. However, when I called to let them know I had received one that was raw on the inside, I was informed that's how the owner wants them served..... needless to say, it'll be the last time I order a breadstick there. One star for decent pizza but read on... Restaurant on Lombard needs a deep cleaning. Table was sticky and obviously had not been really cleaned for a long while. So much grease that someone had scratched their name in the dirt. The napkin holder was so dirty I would not want to touch it. Staff obviously did not wash hands before making salad as the box was covered with greasy fingerprints, the salad au nature, and Greek and not the Garden salad I ordered. Pizza was OK but built from the center out and not from the edge toward the center resulting in two or three inches without toppings. That is buying a 14" pizza for the price of an 18". The delivery van was parked in the handicapped parking space. There was one empty in front so I had a parking place without walking too far. read more

---Weird Wave of Nostalgia--- The last time I was unemployed I came up with an affordable eating plan. Wait til trays of Stouffers Lasagna went on sale, buy one tray, bake it and eat a piece or two a day. That'd usually last me about a week, so it ended up being about a dollar a day. Not bad, not healthful, not something I did for very long. That was six years ago, and I was single then (that was the same time period where I'd have two piles of clothes...one clean, one dirty....no hangers, no folding....no distinction between light and dark...laundry was so simple then). Ah, memories. Anyway, flash forward to the present...unemployed...actually have spent the last month as a volunteer PDX tour guide for friends and family (have much awesomeness to yelp about!)...so today marked day five of eating leftover Sparky's Pizza. While my situation's quite different now (laundry now involves whites, light colors, medium colors, jeans, darks, linens, delicates, etc.) eating the same thing five days in a row (for breakfast only...there are a few things in this world I'd consider eating every meal of the day and this isn't one of them) brought back a wave of weird nostalgia (which I'm sure you're thankful I decided to share). ---Actual "Sparky's Pizza" Review--- So I like this place. It's close. Fun, helpful customer service. The staff here rocks. Pizza was done when they said it'd be. The prices are half of what Old Town charges. There I paid $42 for two larges. Here I paid $21 for two larges, a liter of root beer, and bunch of bread sticks. The toppings were good and plentiful, they're almost too generous with the cheese. The sauce didn't add or detract, so much cheese that if this were a Wendy's commercial their'd be an elderly women asking "Where's the Sauce?". Okay, so here's the thing. The crust, yeah too much of a bad thing. I maybe wrong, but this isn't what I'd call "Authentic New York Pizza". Two pieces and you feel like you've eaten a whole pizza. Great if you're really trying to stretch a dollar, but terrible if you're searching for great pizza. Economically I think it'd make sense for them to use about half as much dough. Their costs would be lower, and I honestly think business would increase (Better Pizza = More Business). I'm just saying. So I'm sure at some point I'll return for some dough with toppings. I'll never forget the day, my dearest ex and I, saw a giant, resident rat... galloping across that dusty, casually-floured, indoor landscape.... it scurried right out from a dark corner in the bench that we were sitting on. It headed straight for the kitchen. Not sure if the two hands-on-deck pretended to ignore it, or were oblivious to the general hysteria (there were 5 of us total, waiting for orders). Terrible customer service, misleading menu, OK pizza. Ordered the Brooklyn, only to find my mouth on fire when I took my first bite. Menu stated "mild cherry peppers" what I found were essentially jalapeños all over the pizza, even under the cheese. When I called for a refund was greeted with rudeness and incompetence. Not only did I not receive my money back for a pizza I couldn't eat, but was greeted with condescending remarks. Sparky's is just down the street from my house, which is dangerous because that means I can pop in anytime for a tasty slice. Or I can call in an order and by the time I find my shoes, walk over, and wait for the crosswalks at MLK and Lombard, a whole pie and an order of bread sticks are ready. I do wish they would deliver for non-business folks, but I suppose it's a good thing that I walk to Sparky's to keep the pounds at bay. I love their little shop with indoor seating, enough for a few couples and groups of 4-6 in the booths. No AC so summertime it's pretty toasty in there in addition to the ovens. Some parking up front and street parking just to the north on Russet St. Their menu has a ton of pizzas to choose from and you can build your own. Right now I love The Farm pizza (chicken, bacon, mushroom, artichokes) and I drizzle or dip it with Ranch. Super tasty!! read more

With so many pizzerias charging upwards of $30 for a large pie nowadays, it was certainly refreshing to find a place where you can still get a big ol' 18 incher, loaded with toppings, for under $20. Enter Sparky's. The problem, as even the most rudimentary palette will quickly discover after a few bites of ones first slice o' Sparky Pie, is one of QC. The crust is gummy yet tough, and is quickly revealed to be a flaccid, soggy mess after extracting from the box. I've tried four different Sparky pies now, and the crusts on all of 'em, even their Margharita, tapped out like an amateur MMA fighter in his first big fight (and first quick loss). Time to pump the old breaks a little and give Sparky's some more credit where its due: I don't seek to give the impression it was all bad. Of the four pies tried, I thought their NYNY was particularly good, with plenty of meaty, porky toppings for an overall pleasing effect, managing to at least temporarily mask the disappointing situation w/the crust. Couple a' slices of that pizza pie will put the kibosh on most well-intended people's ambitions for the rest of the evening. In other news, the service was prompt but there was a funk of low morale about the place... I've worked too many places w/endemic low staff morale to be able to miss it when I now catch even a tiny whiff of it. Also, they only deliver for orders of $75 or more... you better be having a big party w/plenty of guests, b/c $75 buys you a whole bunch of this extravagantly mediocre fare. The hot wings seemed like a bargain at first @ about 6 bucks for a dozen, but they were a lifeless affair, and their take on "hot/spicy" would draw jeers from school children. Bottom line: there's tastier pizza options abounding in No Po these days, but you will probably pay significantly more for any of it. I'd spend money on ol' Sparky again, but I can't imagine anyone bragging them up to foodie friends or out-of-towners. read more

I'm sorry, I didn't like this pizza. Mostly dough with a little sauce (but sauce was delicious) and almost no cheese or toppings. It was cheap but I'd rather pay twice as much for good pizza.
