I had "dissed" Spangles at my first visit, but now it is our burger go-to! Spouse and I get the mushroom Swiss burger meal. The burger is juicy, the cheese is melted, and the mushrooms blend right in. Spangles' fries are crispy and light with no need for ketchup (unless you just want it). Spangles also has the best ice cream, especially their concoction "slider." Creamy with yummy toppings. We've had fairly good service, and of course the retro ambiance is nostalgia at its best. This was the first place we stopped after deboarding the plane. It said fast drive thru do we immediately stopped. We got two 1/3 bacon cheese burgers, fries and a soda. Spent the day in Wichita and I had heard of spangles, but nothing great, but I like to discover for myself if I like a place or not, so I stopped in. First off, the exterior was colorful and bright, but dated, however I do believe that is on purpose. The interior kind of takes you back in time to sock hops and soda shops. Has a 50s theme to it. My waitress was curteous and friendly. My food was prepared well. The food is ok, I had a garlic parmesean burger and fries. The burger was ok, but was way too greasy, but the fries were good. Spangles food and service has declined alot recently. Also the portions have shrunk and the prices have risen. I have had incorrect orders on my last three meals and will not eat at Spangle again. Their burgers are often cold and mushy and their fries are oftentimes hard and chewy. read more

My husband and I was in Wichita for the day and on our way home we decided to swing through the drive through at Spangles for dinner. We both got the classic $5 meal with a strawberry chiller. The only thing out of this meal that was good was the chiller. The burger and fries was cold and the fries had uncooked fries Hidden under the cooked fries. I was really disappointed in my meal. I love trying some local diners, and this definitely qualifies. Pretty simple to find from the road, this place reminds me of a regular fast-food restaurant - only it's pretty awesome. The entire building is decked out in 50's decorations - including a giant Elvis statue. The booths are extremely colorful and 50's looking while still being comfortable. Despite going for a 50s theme, everything is clean and there are no rips or tears on anything. For those that want a standard feel, there are tables and chairs, there are booths, and there are tables with bar stools. It gives you a good selection of where to sit. They have some pretty interesting food choices. One of my friends really recommends the $5 meal deal which includes a drink, an entree, fries, and an ice cream treat. The meal deal ice cream treats aren't too interesting. They're soft-serve ice cream just topped with your topping of choice. They're tasty, but nothing too special. Their specialized ice-cream desserts are much more impressive. When it came to food, it was prepared pretty quickly and was warm. Just like a standard fast food restaurant, it was done within 2 minutes or so. Food is served in baskets if you eat in, and you can pick your spot to eat. The french fries were actually quite tasty, and I'd say they're definitely some of the better diner fries that I've ever had. The Chicken Sandwich was good as well. I like their menu options, but they aren't anything particularly unique. They are, however, all options that are plain enough that you're bound to find something you'll love on their menu as long as you are happy eating at most fast food joints. Final thoughts: I absolutely love the decor, and it made it an actual experience to eat here. The food was definitely good, and if someone wanted fast food without wanting to experience a standard chain place, this is where I'd take this. Drive Thru with Monday 1/2 price partial menu. Tried sourdough bacon swiss and sourdough mushroom swiss. Enjoyed the bacon swiss better since it had lettuce and tomato but if mushroom burger had lettuce and tomato I would say it had more of a burger/sandwich flavor. The mushroom swiss had some oozing mushroom sauce and mushrooms were miniscule so felt like I was searching. The Swiss melted so well with the butter toasted sourdough bread, almost like a grilled cheese sandwich with beef patty. Terrible experience this morning. Bad food backed by bad service. Ordered a breakfast sourdough and the eggs were cold to the touch. On the phone, the manager told me they checked the temp and it was fine. It was either a different batch or a lie. There was no warmth left in my eggs. Tater tots tasted like the fryer oil was long overdue for a change. Manager was dismissive and hung up on me. I had one complaint a couple years ago and corporate never responded. The interior's campy as hell, but the food (for a fast food joint, mind you) is really pretty darned tasty. I'm not accustomed to eating in fast food joints, so my experience eating here was a little disconcerting. That said, I got over it in short order. (No one should eat this way every day, granted, but we were in a hurry and had heard good things about Spangles.) We jumped back onto the highway and headed home after the meal. Spangles is really not my idea of a good time. I like that it's local, and I like that they really break out of the burger rut with lots of other offering, but it always just seems greasy to me! Because it was raining, my husband and I ducked inside and I ordered a peanut mudslide. The chocolate was too cold and was rock hard, making it seem kind of waxy, not at all satisfying. Visiting from out of state, we've made it a mission to try different places. Driving by during the day, Spangles looked great. Last night when we had the munchies, we searched on Yelp and found this place open until 11. It was 9:45, so we headed to the drive through. We pulled up the speaker and began our order with Chloe. The menu was extensive and we couldn't find a simple bacon cheeseburger so I asked if they had one. Chloe, who'd obviously had a rough day, snapped "what?! You can add bacon to any of our burgers!" Shocked at her reply, I picked a burger and added bacon. The next voice was a male and he was really friendly. He repeated our first burger order, then Chloe returned. She was only slightly better than her first try. Her demeanor was terrible and made us feel like we clearly ruined her day. The rest of our interaction at the speaker was the same. No friendliness, no personality. "Size? Drink? Next?" Shocked. We pulled to the window, she barked our total, handed my receipt, our drinks and food. Her only comment was "thank you". I no sooner grabbed the food and all of the lights on the outside which were originally glowing and inviting were turned off. We sat in the dark and organized our now regretful purchase. Apparently they closed at 10 and Chloe wanted to go home. Management needs to work a bit on their representation to customers regardless of when they close. Obviously, we were a burden and boy, could we feel it. Will not return, and have shared our experience with our nephew, a college student here in Wichita, to do the same.
