This review isn't for the store in general, but for a specific employee. I have gone to the store in the past with plumbing questions and the associate who assisted me was no help at all. After a long hiatus, I returned to the store on Thursday with my husband and had quite a different experience with a different employee. Charles was the first person to speak with us when we walked through the door. He was patient. He listened to our issue we were having ,and walked us through how to resolve it! This is the service people want to receive when they are going into their neighborhood hardware stores. He didn't rush and was engaging. Went in looking for a patio door handle . Price on the shelf 16.97$ grabbed some other items . Went to register it rang up as 27.99 was told someone put it on the wrong shelf . Went back grabbed the peg hook . Brought it to the register . Owner is now over . Says there two different bar codes . Yet they both say the same model number . Argument ensues . They then scan the peg hook and the item . They are both the same . But ring up as 27.99. They did reluctantly honor the advertised price on the shelf . I did not buy the other items as I will not indulge this rude owner . No apology for their rudeness. I wasn't trying to get over on them . I just wanted the price they had on the shelf . This is called bait and switch . Customer service is not their forte . Peg hook bar codes and the actual product bar codes do not always match as UPC's change via vendor and planogram dates . They should may be do a price audit rather than belittling a customer To then in the end, looking less than educated about their own business. . At no point did they offer to get the price tag or do any verification I had to go back . And then be hassled by the inept owner . I will not go back . read more

I've stopped in here a few times over the years. It's much more convenient than running to one of the big box stores. Ace has a fair amount of items in stock that can solve most of your needs. Obviously, they do not have the space to stock specialty items. When I came in I was looking for stud screws for a 50amp breaker. They didn't have any but they did have a 50 amp breaker that solved the same problem. They have a small greenhouse and I've gotten good deals on some tomato plants in the past. The vast majority of the staff is very knowledgeable and very helpful. One or two of the older gentlemen who work here are not in much of a hurry so if you ask for help when you're trying to get in and out... just keep that in mind. I prefer to show local when I can, yeah the prices can be a bit higher, but I'm happy to support a local store hiring local people to help keep money in the community. read more

Our riding mower was taken to Spanglers Ace Hardware to be serviced. The mower that was returned to us is not our mower. They insist it is our mower and will not acknowledge they may have made an error. I called Troy Bilt and the mower they returned to me was manufactured a year later then I bought my mower. They are so ridiculous they still insist it is my mower. I have never dealt with anyone as arrogant and unreasonable as the Spanglers. BEWARE!!! read more

Only reason we go here is for the rental section, never had any issues. Renting a digger for the day was as cheep as $250. Rental prices are great, affordable, and very easy! When renting you get a trailer to pull as well, and just have to return by the end of the business day, which is 8:30 pm on the weekday! Makes returning equipment conscience after work. However if you need anything from household tools, to patio furniture, bird seeds,to supplies, they have it all! read more

Spangler's Ace Hardware sold me a plastic light switch $1.79 . It was the wrong size so I went back to get the bigger wall switch they refuse to take the original one back because it wasn't in the packaging. The worst experience I ever had . I will never go back there again. My mother and I went there for convenience we would spend up to $50 a month but I will be more than happy to go to Lowe's home improvement for now on. read more

Younger staff members appear kind and empathetic, this post is in no way directed towards them...a senior staff member (unsure, maybe management?) made remarks about me in front of other customers when I noticed an item was damaged at time of checkout. I was told I could go grab a replacement. After I had walked away he spoke about me publicly (my husband was behind me in line). While I was grabbing the other item he also said "after she leaves just put it back on the shelf". I was very disappointed, dissatisfied, and upset. read more

I genuinely enjoy shopping at Spangler's Ace Hardware. I'm not always a fan of the prices, but sometimes you just can't beat the convenience of it being 5 minutes from my house. Plus, sometimes we're just spoiled by Walmart, Amazon and other massive retailers. I have shopped here many times & have received very good customer service. Never had a problem with anyone here. I appreciate how willing and available people are to help. I know Chad specifically has given me excellent advice and gone above and beyond to provide good and helpful information. read more

I have been in PA for about 7 yrs now and this is my go to hardware store 9-10 times and that means driving past both Walmart and Lowes. Nice guys....always helpful and friendly. The store has what I need not thousands of things I don't need. I have no idea why the previous reviews were lack luster....a bit more in price is okay considering the service I have gotten and they run great sales. For example....interior paint was buy one get one free in the spring. Plus.... they had salt this past winter when everyone else was OUT. Friday 7/3 got me a new manly weed whacker for 49.99 (plus a few other things) and torn my weeds up! I'm so thrilled I might do the house across the street for sh*ts and giggles. :) read more

Very helpful, a little more expensive than your big chain hardware stores but their employees are knowledgeable and you end up with the right thing to do the job the right way the first time, plus they have everything. When you look at the size of the store, you can't imagine where they keep it all, but it's in there. I will pay a few extra pennies for a sales staff who has been there done that any day of the week. After 15 years of shopping for my rental property in Dover ,PA Spanglers Ace Hardware has lost my business forever. This morning I was called about a 4ton delivery of stone that was expected for delivery. After confirming I was ready for it the guy on the phone said he'd see me in a little bit. I thought this was the appropriate time to explain where he would need to go to drop off the stone. He had my address but it was coming to the rear yard so I began explaining in simple terms that at 5th st (The street before 6th or my st) there would be 4 rowhomes on the corner on the left. I was telling him behind the rowhomes was my alley/easement that would be his turn. He rudly refused to let me explain that simple instruction. Instead he insisted that because he had never been in my area he would have to get there before taking the directions or "figuring it out" what! Who can't look for a giant landmark and make one turn! I said his GPS would have him on that road anyway just look for the rowhomes on the left. He then snaps at me that he still uses mapquest! Really in 2018 no GPS for a delivery truck. He was so rude I just said whatever call me after you wonder around the neighborhood for a while. After I had a minute I decided to cancel for the rude very strange conversation. Upon calling back to report this rude employee I was speaking with a women when 5 minutes in to the call a 3rd voice comes on the phone and it was the same guy but now he was listening in on my call. I asked his name and he proudly proclaims I'm Mr. Spangler!!! Wow I was floored the owner could be that inept at customer service and would loose a long standing customer over what? Me trying to save him fuel and time by giving him a 5 second final instruction? Long and short of it I called York Building Supply and am getting the same order with better stone and they were 75 dollars cheaper. Thanks Mr. Spangler for saving me money now and in the future since you have given me a reason to just head to Lowe's 15 minutes up the road. By the way the last thing I was asked by the new driver at York Building Supply was "if I had any final instructions for the drop off" he took my simple directions with out any problems at all. Buying local is convenient, As any hardware store you get great advice when you need it, buy on your own when you don't. They have a great shop that installs screens for the sliding door. The tool rental area is good as well. Having a U-Haul truck on site would be a plus for the rental items you would not want to put in your SUV. Selling at least 2x4's and mold free sheet rock would get a larger chunk of my DIY purchases. Has a surprisingly good selection of Craftsman Tools, Plows and Mowers so it saves having to travel through 6 lights to get to Sears, and the Higher end Grills. It is a for the most part a buyer beware shop. I found when I bought a Durabond product that I thought was a mix and use Sheet rock seems, that went completely hard when a phone call for my job came in, could not be returned. But a 13 dollar loss every 10 years is not bad for having for the most part all your project needs is not completely bad. I did buy the dust less product and it was a gem. read more

I've lived in Dover for eight years and when I need knowledgeable info and prompt service I go there. The paint dept staff have been super over the years. The prices are on the upper side of normal so I watch for deals and sales. When I need something in a pinch they haven't left me down. I like the big box retailers but support local stores when I can. read more

I agree that their prices are a bit higher than you will probably find at Lowes or Home Depot but when I consider the time I save in not having to drive to those other two stores and fight the lights and traffic, the little bit extra I pay helps support their continued operation and local employees. Amazing what all they have packed into that store! I needed a new wick for my kerosene heater, no one else around the York area had one. Spangler's Ace had about 30 different ones hanging on the wall including the one I needed. Another time I needed a 14 x 80 mm bolt for my car (not a real common size) and I didn't want to wait for the local Chrysler dealer to order one. Spangler's had boxes of them. Prices are higher than some other places but probably what I save in gas by staying local makes up the difference. read more
