We took my Chevy Traverse to Space Center Auto on a Friday because the A/C was blowing warm. My husband chose them instead of our usual shop because they offered a shuttle, which we needed that day. They came back with a long list of issues. First, they said the A/C compressor was broken and would need to be replaced -- along with multiple tests, flushes, and additional parts -- for about $2,700. Then they claimed the water pump was failing and needed to be replaced immediately to avoid overheating ($1,600). They also quoted us for: Rear main oil seal replacement: $2,854 Front crankshaft seal: $447 Front brake job: $726 The total came to $10,391. For a vehicle that's less than five years old... what?! We declined everything and decided to take the car to our trusted shop, AutoCheck. Unfortunately, Space Center Auto never mentioned that they're closed on Saturdays. They gave us the quote late Friday and didn't hear back from us, so our car sat there all weekend. We couldn't retrieve it until Monday -- and had to pay $311 just to get it released. AutoCheck inspected the car and immediately found the real issue: the A/C compressor. They quoted $1,700 to fix it. When we asked about all the other problems Space Center listed, they were shocked. They told us the water pump was fine, the seals were fine, and nothing else was wrong. Yes, the front brakes will need to be done eventually -- but not urgently. AutoCheck had no incentive to downplay repairs; they're a business, too. If something needed fixing, they would have told us. The contrast between the two shops was staggering. Based on our experience, I would avoid Space Center Auto at all costs. read more

I researched Space center auto, and was told by Reviews and AI that they were honest.....Bullcrap. I take my 2003 honda to them 2/26/26 for a check engine light problem and white smoke during start up. These clowns quote me a price of $14,500.00 to get inspected , they don't realize the car has a blue book of under 5k. If they were honest they would have said we dont want to do the job or its not worth it. Do not trust these people or the reveiws. Overall, SCA is a great shop. While one salesman tried to sell me services I did not need, others have been straightforward with me in the past 4 years. For example, Kerry suggested that instead of replacing my headlights, the technicians could restore them for less cost. What I care about is TRUST. I'm new the area, and needed a mechanic. Found Space Center Automotive because of the convenient location, but was very impressed with their quick response time, and professional service. They were able to fit me in on the day that worked best for me, and called me immediately when they realized I needed to replace a tire, as opposed to simply rotating tires. They worked with my budget, and helped me find tires that worked for me, and were able to get me back on the road on the same day I dropped my car off. read more

These guys are the reason people hate auto repair! They are total crooks! Brought in my daughter's charger which was overheating. (A friend of hers referred her and I trusted her.) We asked for a diagnosis to be performed and understood that would cost $67. That was the only thing they didn't charge us for and obviously never performed. One of the only positives was they pick you up and bring you to their shop and can provide a basic rental if they'll have your vehicle overnight. This was a convenience with a working college student. Although after all of the back and forth and price gauging I'd rather her have taken an uber to school and work everyday....which would've been cheaper!! Their first assessment was a nothing more than needed maintenance which totaled $444.03 for parts and $844.41 for LABOR!! That's right, that was the labor cost!! The total came to $1327.21. (See pictures) Once again, these guys are crooks!! We paid thinking the initial problem was taken care of only for the car to overheat again on the way home! Called them and told them what happened. We brought it in again the next day only to be told the car then needed a new radiator and water pump. The estimate for this was another $1,400! My question which was never answered was "why weren't these problems discovered with the initial assessment?!" My husband never received an answer from the representative he spoke with in person and over the phone. The guy just kept saying that he was sorry we were disappointed and he'd talk to the owner. A day later that guy called my husband to tell him they would replace the radiator for cost of parts only. Then called a bit later to tell him that other work was needed and simply replacing the radiator wouldn't fix the problem. The owner then offered a trade of a beaten up vehicle he was attempting to get rid of. Wow!!! We rejected that and said we'd be in to pick up the car. Upon arriving, the car was up on a lift and taken apart. The guy said he wanted to show my husband what was wrong. The damage was done at this point and any further attempts to save face were irrelevant! The entire experience was mind numbing and ridiculous!!! Complaints being filed with the BBB and AAA as well. I paid $2500 for fixing the oil leak in my car (Mercedes Benz 2013) a month ago. But after we got my car and had been driving for one week, we noticed that there was still an oil leak. I took my car to Space center mechanic shop last Thursday 2/15/2024 to fix the problem that was under warranty. I was told that car will be fixed with no extra charge by the end of the same day. After three days Not only, they did not keep their promise, but they ask for $700 more to fix the same problem. Ineffective Repairs: Despite entrusting Space Center Auto Mechanic with the repair of my vehicle, the issues were not adequately addressed. I paid for a service that failed to resolve the problem, leading me to question the competence of their mechanics and the quality of their workmanship. The billing process was murky, and I felt a distinct lack of transparency regarding the costs involved. The prices may not be the best, but it is a good value for what is offered. They have top notch equipments to repair cars. They can shuttle you around while they're fixing your car. Took my car here for a state inspection. Clean, nice lobby and nice workers at the desk. The inspection took 20 mins or so, not bad. However I got rubbed the wrong way when the mechanic came inside and asked where I was from--I told him Alabama. He launched into a spill about how we need more rebel flags and it was a shame they took it out of NASCAR.... Yeah, I'm not that type of Alabamian. Keep that out of the workplace--I came here for an inspection, not a verbal Facebook post. Otherwise, they would have gotten 5 stars. read more

I have taken my cars here numerous times over the years and I finally learned my lesson. Most recently, our battery died on one of our cars right when one of our cars was at a dealership location for another brand of car. The dealership was able to put in a battery, but told us the alternator was also bad and they couldn't fix it, so we drove it the next day to Space Center Auto since we'd been to them before and they are near our neighborhood (AND they have a great shuttle service, which is a big selling point for me). Anyway, all they had to do was replace the alternator and also find out why the AC wasn't cooling correctly, as long as we were bringing it in. They found some other issue with it while we were there, so we told them to fix that too. We paid too much, but I expected that and would have been fine if that were all. We got the car back (they said the frown was low in the AC and that was all, and they had replaced the alternator and the power steering pump) and for a day it was fine. But then, it started making another odd noise. I took it back and they said that surprise (!) the motor mounts were bad and needed to be replaced. I questioned the timing of this (the motor mounts go out JUST after replacing the alternator?), but we did that, too since we'd already paid all kinds of money and just wanted a working car. We were invested! We got the car back, but the power steering made some horrific noise before I even drove it off (it was obvious and they shouldn't have sent it out and called it "fixed" with that sound. Did they think we wouldn't notice?). They said to drive it around a bit because it had "air" in it, so I did, but brought it back when the sound only got worse. They ultimately replaced it since the pump had been defective and we got the car back again. Three times is a charm, right? Not. I took it back a FOURTH time within two weeks and there was yet something else wrong with the battery, but to their credit, they talked to the original dealership that had installed the battery and that was also replaced for free (of course, I darn near had a melt down by this point with all the issues we had with our car by now. It's not a new car, but it's not that old, either). At the end of it all, it cost me OVER $5,000 to fix all these issues, with much of it being the "motor mount" problem that occurred only just after I brought it to them and the car had had no motor mount issues prior to them handling it. And now, not even a year later, the AC doesn't work again, but I'm too scared to take it back to them lest it cost me another few thousand dollars. This has happened before, with other cars, so it's a pattern. At least for us. I'm going to steer clear from now on. I think the folks at the counter are very nice and the appearance is professional, but I'm not sure the mechanics know what they are doing and they might even be purposely messing with things like motor mounts to make more money. read more

This is by far THE BEST AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR center in Houston! The knowledge, helpfulness and care from Todd, Kenny, Chris and the rest of their crew go above and beyond any other we have taken our vehicles to. The facility is clean and has free refreshments in the waiting area! They also have free shuttle rides if the repair will take awhile and the shuttle driver is the sweetest man ever! All these guys have a great sense of humor! We choose to call ahead for an appointment but have had emergencies and just stopped in too. You are about to get an honest and real review of Space Center Automotive. I did not have a great experience there. I dropped my car off for a full service oil change (about $40) and then I get a call about my car saying that it "stopped working" and required a $1000 repair. I am actually pretty good with cars so I tried to get a full explanation of the required repairs. I did not quite believe all the bills racking up. When it was all said and done I ended up paying about $500 after talking to them for two days straight and getting fed up with not having my car. Proof that the original charge was a gross over statement.. and I still question weather or not my car actually required all those repairs. Long Story Short: Although my experience may have been an isolated incident, I still believe there are a few things about this establishment that hold true for most customers that they have. 1) they tend to over charge for their services 2) The customer service is pretty nice - UNLESS you question the repairs, then they get mad at you haha 3) they *seemed* to have a tendency to "size up" their customers with respect to how they look and weather or not they know enough to actually question the repairs - unfortunately for them I was not going to back down. Shop Notes: The actual shop is really clean and organized. It's always nice to go to a mechanic shop that has a waiting area that is not doused in engine oil. They do offer a pickup/drop off service which was very helpful. Sentence Summary: I would not necessarily assume that my review is what happens to everyone that goes there, BUT I can say with relative certainty that the observations I made (above) about this automotive shop seem to be accurate. read more

Not recommended due to questionable integrity. Yesterday, I went in for an inspection. Car failed the inspection. There was a terse conversation regarding the safety inspection of a car which breezed through safety the last two years, but I'll skip right to the problems regarding the emissions inspection. My car failed the emissions test, and I suspect it is because it hadn't been run in the three weeks prior to the test (we were out of state visiting family). I saw this happen over the summer after a vacation, and the condition cleared after a few days of driving. The mechanic who conducted the inspection thought my explanation was incorrect, and that there was a significant issue with the car that needed to be addressed in order for him to buy off on the emissions test. I'm not saying there isn't a problem, but I don't think it's enough of one to hold back a 2-door Ford Focus from driving 10 miles a day. They quickly offered to do the diagnostic ($110) to figure out the problem, and then any work that went into fixing it. Naturally, I said no thanks. After I left, I noticed at the bottom of my inspection report the fine print - if your car fails emissions, then "the testing inspector should provide you with a list of Recognized Emissions Repair Facilities and a brochure of various waivers available." This wasn't done. In other words, they did not follow through on informing me that there are vouchers available to individuals with cheap cars (like me) who can't afford expensive emissions fixes on vehicles that have very little value. Today, I returned and asked why they hadn't shared this information. They said they were on the list of companies which participate in Air Check and that's why they offered to fix it on the spot. I asked if the $110 diagnostic could be rolled in with the voucher, and they said it couldn't - that it needed to be done beforehand. Since I had fixed the safety inspection items, I had them re-do the safety test knowing that emissions test would fail (to qualify for the voucher - you need to pass safety and fail emissions). Then I called Houston Air Check, and they said that it was not necessary for a diagnosis to be made first. All that was needed was the failed emissions test, salary documentation, and a couple other items. They also said they had no record of Space Center Automotive on their list of Harris County mechanics that participate in Air Check (remember, they said they were). To verify, I went to Houston Air Check's website and, lo' and behold, Space Center Automotive is not listed - not only in Harris County, but in any county. All of this led me to think they wanted to secure work from me which could cost several hundred dollars because, according to Houston Air Check, the voucher I would receive is only usable at participating locations (which Space Center Automotive is not). This means they would not receive my business and would miss out on several hundred dollars in revenue. Maybe that's chump change to them, but it's change nonetheless. Perhaps they simply didn't know what the Air Check program was (when talking about it, they had very little to say), but if that's the case, you don't make stuff up. You simply say, "I don't know what that is," or, "Interesting, I haven't heard of that." Lying about matters which could help your customers is a poor business decision, but if folks aren't willing to advocate for themselves or their automobiles, issues like this might never bubble to the surface. I will not do business with Space Center Automotive again, and I will recommend to all family, friends, and any individual I overhear talking about car problems the same. read more

Tried charging $800 to replace a busted thermostat housing on a Ford Explorer a few years ago. They told me "It's hard to get to." I guess it's because my wife brought it in. I was working nights and was expecting to over pay but dang.... I do my own work most of the time. I went and got the Explorer, went home, removed the part (easier to get to than the battery.) Went to AutoZone and bought the part, returned home and replaced it in 45 minutes. That time includes from the time I left the house to when I closed the hood. Crooks. read more

One of the things they charged me for ( diesel exhaust fluid) my truck doesn't even take considering ford didn't starting using diesel exhaust fluid till 2010-11. My trucks a 2008. THATS FRAUD!!!They will completely rip you off like they did me. I'm not mechanically inclined so I trusted them. My truck was in great shape when I brought it there just needed an oil change. They called me with a list of things they recommended get done costing almost $3,000. I agreed to do some of the things which ended me around $1,300. So a few days later I had a coolant leak which was from the coolant flush they did. Which I thought honest mistake ya know? No ones perfect. At which time agreed to do a few more things on the costing $700. When I got my truck back this time they had put a huge gash in my tire and denied doing it. Along with that I had an oil leak now all of a sudden. After brining it to Ford this time costing $2,400. Needless to say now I'm completely broke now and all they offered to make reconcile the situation was a discount on my next service there. As if I'm actually gonna let theses people touch my truck again! I Will not. I have used Space Center Automotive a few times in the past. I have never been disappointed. From the moment you walk in the door you are greeted and treated like family. The quality of service is unmatched. I have owned both older and new cars and the professionalism and quality of the service by all of the employees at Space Center Automotive is impeccable. From the service manager (ask for Chris Beers) to the ASE certified mechanics (with well over 500 years of combined experience) to the driver who is available to drive you to home or work, and even pick you up and bring you back once the work is completed, there is no where else Id take my car if you live or work in or around the NASA (Houston) area. In my own time I also run a non profit and todays visit to Space Center Automotive was a last minute service request for an automobile that we were preparing to drive from Texas to San Diego California. Space Center Automotive really stepped up and without us asking donated their time and experience to support our efforts. We trusted that taking our iconic 1969 Lincoln Continental to them would give us the confidence in the Lincoln prior to making the 1700 mile Journey. The manager Todd is a very dishonest guy and has been very difficult communicating with. There was an incident and instead of working with me to fix the problem every time I talked to him on the phone he would hang up. I would ask him when I would call back to please not hang up so we can talk like adults but he was not interested in doing that. There were storage fees involved in the incident that took place, however they were notified of the location 8 days prior. That's $240 in storage fees. He was notified on the 15th of the location but chose to pick it up on the 23rd and I am paying for his decision. This man is very dishonest and when I asked him and confronted him about it scrambled all the papers that the bill was on and told me that's fine I can just leave. Being that he sends me letters twice a week demanding his money I chose to pay him so I would never have to hear his name again. I will never take my car to this auto shop ever again. If you're looking for a professional experience this place is not it. There have been other issues in the past with different vehicles of bringing them in getting what we need it fixed and then all of a sudden something else breaks a week later that no other mechanics saw but Space City Automotive, sounds a little convenient anyways if you're looking for good honest work this place is not the place read more

This place sucks, I've never seen a place take 2 days to patch a tire. I've dropped a vehicle off here on a Monday to get a TIRE PATCHED and it literally wasn't ready til Wednesday evening. I wouldn't be so bad if it was the only time that that happened buy I work for a company that contracts this company for tire repairs and on average it takes them a day to patch the tire and if its not that its 2 days. That's beyond ridiculous especially when I've seen it done in literally 10 minutes. If u value your time and can't afford to rent a vehicle just to get a tire patched avoid this place at all cost. read more

I moved to the Apartments next door to this place about a year ago and I have been going there ever since to get my oil changed or whatever car maintenance. I have a 2009 Kia Rio so I have not really needed anything big to be fixed, until yesterday. I was on my way to a part time job interview and I was only a couple blocks away from my apartment when my car started to rumble and the engine made crazy noises. I looked at my dash and my check engine light started blinking and then went solid. I pulled over at a gas station and whipped out my manual. It said that when the light flashes and then goes solid there is something wrong with the emission control system and the Catalytic Converter may have become damaged if driven around without a repair. It recommended I should take it to a local dealership ASAP. I don't like dealerships. I don't trust dealerships. I hate going to dealerships. I hate dealership prices. Instead of driving to some local dealer I decided to stop by Space Center Automotive because then I could just walk home. It was 7:30pm and they close at 6:00pm so I knew I would need to do a night drop off. I drove up and parked my car out front. Their doors were open and Brian (an employee) was there. I asked why they were still open because I needed to drop off my car. He said the A/C in the building broke and he needed to be there while the contractors were taking a look at it. He helped me fill out the night drop off information and paperwork. Early in the morning the next day he gives me a call and lets me know that what I was experiencing was the engine misfiring and there are several things that can cause that. To diagnose the exact cause he said he would charge me $98 (including tax). I said sure. I can't imagine it would be cheaper anywhere else. When they do the test they determined that it was a #4 engine coil that went bad and the spark plugs needed to be replaced. He also recommended that I get the car a full tune up. I figured why not. The total came out to $322 and some change. It is not a horrible price for that work and he got it done that day. I got in my car and I was happy to have it cleaned and vacuumed. It started just fine and I left as a happy customer. They do a great job there and I didn't think the price was unreasonable. I just have to get more hours at work to pay for my other bills now. This is a tough review. Their customer service is really good. They do pick up or drive people to where they need to go. Their staff are all very friendly and professional. However, they are a touch on the expensive side of repairs, and I've noticed that their repair quality has decreased quite a bit recently and so too has their competancy. I had one of their staff tell me that there was nothing wrong with my suspension. Considering how the car had a definite tilt to one side and the fact that another repair business fixed the tilt, sometimes I feel that there is just certain work they lazily do not want to do. read more
