As any woman who is NOT pregnant (or trying to get pregnant or miscarried) can understand, that type of comment can be incredibly hurtful and immediately changes the tone of what should be a calming and restorative experience. It is simply not an appropriate question to ask a client unless the client has already disclosed that information themselves. I brought my concerns to the gentleman at the front desk afterward, hoping for a more thoughtful or empathetic response. Instead, I was met with a passive acknowledgment that my "suggestion" would be passed along. Respectfully, this should not be framed as a suggestion from a customer, but rather as a matter of professionalism and client care. If pregnancy status is relevant for treatment purposes - which I understand it is - then that information should be gathered discreetly through intake forms ahead of time - not through personal assumptions made during a massage appointment. What should have been a relaxing and enjoyable return to a spa I once loved instead became an uncomfortable and hurtful experience. Whether the remainder of the massage was objectively below the standard I remembered or simply overshadowed by the interaction, I cannot say. I didn't know their full body massages were given fully clothed. It was pretty uncomfortable at times because they were reaching underneath our garments and stretching out our shirts and still unable to get directly to the muscles they were targeting. It also would've been nice to be told to take our jewelry off for that same reason, reaching underneath my necklace and my husband's chain kind of ruined the experience for the both of us. Lastly, for clients who are African American, offering the courtesy of at least asking if we'd like our hair touched during the massage would've been appreciated.
