I had an excellent experience at this spa, it was simply amazing! I booked a deep tissue massage and it was as strong as I wanted and very skilled. The masseuese was a true professional who knew what they were doing. My aching back was feeling so much better after. When you go to this spa you are free to come as early as you like or stay as late as you want after your treatment in order to enjoy the rooftop indoor pool, sauna, steam room, gym, or relaxation room. I never felt rushed and they encouraged me to stay as long as I wanted. The changing room was nice and had showers with soap, shampoo, etc. They can also provide you with deoderant, a shaving kit, and a toothbrush kit if asked. Along with the robe and slippers they loan you at check-in, you really do not need to bring anything. The relaxation room has bottled water, fancy teas and some nuts and dried fruit. In the end, with local pricing, it was not too expensive. They have monthly promotions so be sure to sign up for their newsletter. I've been a regular at spa St James for several years. Recently they moved to a beautiful new facility in the Ritz Carleton hotel, which has taken their service to a whole new level. I usually come for a massage every 1-2 months, and they are always excellent. I've had facials and pedicures here too which are quite good. The reception is beautiful and you are always greeted warmly, especially by Carol, the owner, or her son. The change room is a little small but the waiting lounge is spacious with nice comfy lounge chairs and tea and snacks available. Upon request, you can have access to the hotel's fitness facilities, do yourself a favour and come early to enjoy a dip in the pool on the top floor of the hotel! We had an excellent experience at Spa St James and I'm so happy there. Two of us got massages, and he waited by the fireside while I got a facial to follow. I must say, though, prices are too high for what you are getting. Massage was fab - my masseuse was very thorough, but no ability to add essential oils (unless you purchased a bottle of oil) or a scalp massage or anything... I purchased a couple's massage deal for Spa St James on living social on a whim and was looking forward to a relaxing afternoon massage with my bf. The Spa is very well located, the receptionists downstairs were lovely and the waiting area upstairs had a pot of tea ready...it looked promising. The couples massage room was small and the carpet had seen better days - there was no separate area to undress, no fluffy robes... My bf's massage therapist was Kim, by all accounts she was sweet and gave a great soothing massage....we barely heard her in the room. My massage therapist was Fillippo - he clearly didn't get the memo that it was supposed to be a soothing couple's massage and that he wasn't the only person in the room - he kept talking and gave me some sort of sport massage which involved twisting me into various odd positions...I'm sure it was great for my muscles but it wasn't very relaxing. My bf kept worrying that I was getting hurt as I'd whimper and be told to breathe through the pain... After the massage there was no area to decompress - we barely had time to dress when there was a knock at door and we were told that the room needed to be readied for the next clients. We were led to one bathroom to freshen up (with 2 other girls waiting) and told we could sit and relax in a narrow hallway with 2 hard backed chairs and one carafe of water. Spa St-James is by far my favourite spa in Montreal. I've been here several times, and am never disappointed. The staff is lovely and are always very kind and accommodating. This last time I went, I arrived just on time, and was warmly welcomed by having my coat taken and offered tea while I waited. It took a little longer than usual because I room was being setup, but no inconvenience really. I had a 90-minute massage with Tamberley; very sweet and accommodating. I had mentioned to concentrate on my upper back as I sit in an office chair all day so I have tension in that area. She applied the right amount of pressure and I left feeling relaxed and refreshed. I hands-down recommend this place to anyone needing some TLC. Prices are decent, especially for downtown Montreal. They also offer tax receipts. Can't wait to go back! read more

This was only my second time at a spa, but I can tell you this - I enjoyed every second of it. This really is an urban spa; it has a certain feel to it - brick walls with windows, but not enough light to completely overcome your senses. It walks a fine line between calm and boring. The service is top-notch. When we arrived the person who greeted us was friendly and informative. When we left he was just as friendly and seemed to really care what me and my lovely girlfriend were up to for the rest of the weekend. The receptionist was just as personable and genuine. It all began with my search for the perfect deep tissue real therapeutic massage. after many attempts at several spas, I stopped searching after finding not just 1 but 2 incrediblely talented masseuses. This spa looks great from the outside. I treated my partner to a manicure and pedicure, along with a couple's massage here. Now, on arrival, one is greeted by a whole host of people, and they are all really friendly and accommodating. The ambiance is a cross between an eclectic day spa and a Buddhist monastery (hushed voices and all). Having said this, my partner told me that while the pedicure was okay, the manicure was 'brilliant' (she's had her fair share of these, so she's a great judge for it!). The couple's massage was just okay, however the spa puts in a lot of effort to make one feel relaxed (they provide refreshments at almost every station). The one drawback was that the place was a bit crowded (they do get a lot of appointments, but they're able to manage these quite seamlessly). If there was confusion or conflict, the patron would generally not know of it. Having said this, my favorite aspects of this establishment are the salon (great haircut, head massage, etc.), and very courteous staff (I've been back for the salon alone, and the barber is superb!). The other aspect is (and I mentioned this already) that the staff is very accommodating and rather informative....not only did they treat my partner, but they catered to my every whim (I got chocolates and other items, and they delivered them at different (scheduled) times to her, per my request, to her). The facilities are well appointed and one can come away with a very pleasant experience. The reason this isn't a five star review, however, is that, some of the service staff isn't as experienced for the levels of touted service, but, all things considered, better than a host of other establishments in this city. read more

I am a little baffled by the negative reviews. I went here on a recent Saturday in Montreal and had a wonderful experience. The spa is clean and well appointed. The changing rooms are small but functional. The staff is friendly and accommodating. The relaxation lounge is lovely and truly relaxing with tea and water. I have been a regular customer here for almost 3 years. I booked my 4th message in for august but forgot to cancel it. I called back later the day to say sorry for the no show, carol the lady whom I spoke to said she paid the the lady who was supposed to come that day. Then she said out of good will, she will give me back the massage and i can book it later. She said she will put a note in my account. Now when I called she says she forgot and she said may be i can give you 45$ credit. I totally understand that it was my no show. BUT I TOTALLY HATE when you give your word and then change it later by saying I forgot. I hate this kind of customer service!!! I said I don't need your 45$ credit too have it! read more

Went for a couples massage here on a Saturday and we really have no complaints about our experience! The spa is well located downtown, we were able to walk from our hotel in 10 minutes. You are well-greeted at the door by warm & friendly staff, and then sent to the 2nd floor for massage. My massage therapist, Thérèse, was lovely and attentive. My boyfriend was very pleased with his RMT, too. The decor is great - some brick walls mixed with some fancier furniture and typical spa whites truly make it an 'urban spa' feel. Went here with my bf to get a massage. We were told to wait upstairs. The first thing I noticed was the gross carpet on the stairs. I sat down on one of the tattered chairs and realized that the fake bonsai on the table was absolutely filthy. This place is as far from clean, relaxing and fresh as you can get. I was ready to walk out, but my boyfriend convinced me to stay. When I got into the massage room I told my masseuse where to focus on and to go pretty deep, but she may have spent a maximum of 10 minutes (out of 60) on my back, where I wanted it, and didn't go hard at all. She mainly focused on my legs and hips, which was really weird, especially since I just wanted a back massage and had told her so. The thing that really grossed me out was that she went all the way down my legs to my feet, and then (without washing her hands) onto my FACE. What the hell? I had my makeup all done, I didn't want dirty foot grease on my face. I told her to stop, and then she put oil all through my HAIR? I thought I was pretty clear about what I wanted, and I felt awkward saying it again so I gritted my teeth and took it. I should have just walked out. There were no showers (before or after) so I cleaned up in the bathroom as well as I could and met up with my boyfriend, still covered in grease. My boyfriend said his was okay, but he had the grease issue too. After this massage I may never get one professionally done again. I am yet to try the massage at Spa st. James But I have been there over five times for facial, eyebrow threadings and manicures/ pedicures Upon arrival you will be ushered to go two stories up after taking off your shoes ( you have a chair to sit on which is a big plus for places in montreal) and given flimsy slippers that you will find hard to keep them on while going up the stairs ( better take them off) The waiting area is cool with the brick walls, magazines and the lemon water on offer however the biggest disappointment is the quality of the treatments that are on offer. I have tried the manicures several times in there trying to find the best manicurist but none of the therapists are great The Russian therapist can hardly smile and thinks you can't ask her to shape your nails they way you prefer (she knows better than you think) and she is not open for any suggestions!!! The other two will keep you busy with their sweet talks about their boyfriends and life events to distract you from the bad job they are doing The facial which is done by a lady who does the manicure and the bikini wax ( which I think is gross) is average The only thing I really find it good is the eyebrows threading done by a Turkish therapist who only works two, three times a week and it is hard to get a convenient appointment we her most of the time Price wise it is very expensive and treatments are not good ( I am a trained professional myself so I can tell when things are done properly) read more

This place is very nicely decorated and all the staff seemed to be quite pleasant. It looks very upscale with its big black awning outside at the top of Crescent St. I went there to get a brazilian wax. This is where it went wrong. The woman doing the wax was very nice and very fast and actually did a good job. But I noticed when it was done that she had been using the same stick to apply the wax the whole time! This would have been acceptable I guess if the wax was a small one time use tub, but it wasn't it was a large tub that was and will be used for other people. So she was applying the wax then dipping the stick back into the wax, the same wax that she would have done the same thing with other people. Just think of all the bacteria and hair that are in that tub of wax. DISGUSTING!! Also when she she finished, she put cream on me and told me to rub it everywhere, but she stayed in the room and continued to talk to me, which made me feel uncomfortable. So to avoid eye contact I started looking around while doing this and that's when I noticed the single stick. I didn't really know how to react and didn't say anything to her and paid the man at the front desk, because I am not looking to get anything for free. But I left feeling unhappy, stressed out and dirty, which is the opposite that someone should feel after leaving a spa. All I wanted to do was run home so I could jump in the shower and wash myself. I emailed the spa when I got home and I will not be returning. It's a shame because it has potential. read more

So a friend of mine chose for us to go to this spa for my Spa day just before my wedding. I read all of the reviews, and did my research first. Going in I was confident that I was going to have a great experience. I had decided on the Jewel package with a brazilian bikini wax. This was for my wedding after all. So my first treatment was the Classic facial. This was EXCELLENT. She set the stage for everything else. She had a light pressure, yet comforting touch. I felt relaxed and hydrated afterwards. My second treatment was my wax. The esthetician was nice, and chatty while she was doing it. But I only received a bikini wax, not a brazilian. I am used to getting brazilian waxes, so I know what it entails. She did not even flip me over. That was most certainly NOT worth the $55 I paid. Next I had my pedicure with my manicure done at the same time. The woman who was supposed to do my manicure had called in sick, so the lady who did my wax also did my mani. It was clear she didn't want to be there any longer. She had family things she had to do, and she was rushing through it all. She pushed back my cuticles, but she clipped them all off as well. I now have hangnails on every finger because of that. The pedicure was well done, maybe not the best, but pretty good. To be fair, I asked for a specific design done on my nails. I asked for a shellac french tip, with a design from this Konad stamper I bought. I had used it on myself the week before so I was sure a trained nail technician could handle it. I explained it all, and she seemed to understand. But she was rushing through it. She made mistakes on my nails, and instead of wiping it off and doing it again, she left it. I had to ask her to wipe off a but of another design that transferred onto my nail as well. She kept saying she had to leave, so it was clear she wasn't interested in doing a perfect job, Her pride wasn't in the work at all. Now, it's a week later, my nails have all peeled off, despite the guarantee that shellac nails last for 3 weeks. All in all with 4 treatments, I was only really pleased with one of them. And this was a very expensive spa day. I know I wasn't a bridezilla, and I accepted things as they were because I felt empathy since they are people too. But really, it was for my wedding. A little pride in your work is not too much to ask. So I will not be returning to Spa St James. I'm sure on a good day with full staff they must be great. But I got the short end of the stick, and due to my first impressions, will not be recommending them to anyone. read more

I've been to a number of Spas in Montreal and they can't compare to Spa-St-James. I've been going to spa St-James for the past few years. It's great place and you feel right at home, nothing pretentious or trendy, a very classic and nice getaway in the city. The services and staff are incredible. I have had pedicures with Michelle and see Rada for massages. If you are looking for deep tissue massage, a masseuse with strong hands, then she is the person to see. I went to the Spa st james for a birthday facial as was recommended to me by the hotel. I got there at 8:45,for a 9am appt. No one wanted to tell me where to go . i finally found the floor and waited a half hour. the woman took me at 9:15. She sppke very little and was not particularly friendly. Never even told me her name . There was no steam to the facial which was highly disapointing. But i had to ask. When i asked her questions about the procedure or my skin issues she said i had good skin. end of conversation. The facial was $115 canadian for 45 minutes. . And she left me alone with the facial on for 10-15 minutes no massage. it was rediculous and i would warn people about getting facials there ever. read more

It is a lovely spa with attractive decor, and they offer a great range of services. I loved the spa manicure I got, but I was disappointed with the facial. While the aesthetician was gentle and did a fairly thorough job with the extractions, there was no steaming beforehand. Also, she left the room for 15 minutes while the facial mask was on. In my previous experiences at other spas, when a mask is placed on the face, the aesthetician gives a neck/shoulder massage or a hand massage until it is time for the mask to be removed. Considering the high price of a facial at this spa, I expect the aesthetician to stay to work on me the entire session. I would go back to the spa for a pedicure but not for a facial. read more

We came to the spa on a weekend babymoon getaway. I've done many of the high end spas at the hotels in Toronto like the Ritz, Four Seasons and Shangri La. St James is in the basement of the Ritz and it was a bit small and lacking in facilities. The changeroom was small and the only area outside the change room was a relaxing area. We asked to go to the pool and they let us go in the elevator up to the PH. The pool is shared with hotel guests so there were kids splashing around. When they left it was relaxing and they have a rooftop tanning area. I had the prenatal massage. I've had the prenatal at Ritz Toronto and another massage clinic. This massage was so so compared to what I've had. One part the RMT had me on my back which is uncomfortable pregnant and usually the other places I've been too will give you a slight incline if you go on your back. My husband had the deep tissue and he enjoyed his. For prenatal it wasn't that great. But it was nice to have a spa day. But there may be better places with better facilities. read more

She is very accommodating and treated me like a regular customer since my first visit. Marita is literally the best aesthetician. I always book her for facials, but she is also great for mani/pedi. Not only she is super sweet but she works wonders with her fingers on my face. I always leave glowing and with no bags. I moved recently to NY and I dearly miss them both. The owner makes the place amazing her really kind heart and wonderful aura, she ALWAYS finds a way to give you a great experience, she cares about her clients lipke old friends!! I came today, December 19th, 2013. I must admit this spa was exceptional. Everyone was truly accommodating. I was feeling a little frisky waiting because I only wore a short sleeve shirt so i asked the receptionist if perhaps i could wear my jacket. A gentleman came along and offered me a robe, he ensured that my stay was accommodating and he was very friendly and welcoming. I came for 3 different treatments, the massage by Amy was amazing. It was very soothing and she worked extensively on my back because it was very tense. Additionally, Maria did my facial. She was extremely welcoming and the facial was the best facial i ever had! She popped all my blackheads and made my skin feel silky smooth. As soon as the facial was over, i couldn't help but recommend her to a few friends. She made me feel very relaxed and she was such a sweetheart. What a wonderful job!
