I've had several haircuts with Mesu and she does a wonderful job. She consults with me about what I want, listens before ever washing or pulling out scissors. After my cut, if I feel pieces need extra trimming, she is willing to listen to me, and give me the perfect haircut I want. She's also doing my hair for my wedding, and I completely trust her with my style. In addition to a great cut, they are always professional, never pushy, provide me with a great cup of tea. I've been here twice now and enthusiastically recommend Mesu and Spa Mesu. The salon is relaxing and quiet, and Mesu is a charming lady who knows how to make the client feel good about themselves. I've got thin, fine hair and Mesu understood what I needed to make the most of it, with a lovely short style that is truly wash-and-wear to fit my lifestyle. After seeing a good haircut on my friend by Mesu, I went to her place to get my hair cut. I was in and out in around 35 minutes. They offered me coffee, tea, etc. Mesu is very skilled. After asking my wishes, she offered a couple of helpful suggestions and she did a great job. I'll definitely be coming back here. The price was very reasonable. I was at this salon for two hours getting my hair cut. My thick, wavy hair was due for a cut and I found Spa Mesu through Yelp. I asked for a shoulder length cut, something simple that I could wear with the expectation that I would mostly wear it without Blow drying but that I wanted to have it dried after the cut. I'm just going to focus on the major problems and leave out personal preferences that weren't met in this review. The cut took about fifteen minutes, max. She basically just shortened my hair until it was at my shoulder. Then she dried it, I swear I could smell my hair cooking when she declared that she would need to flat iron it too because, she said, it didn't look good blow dried. This concerned me not because she was going to flat iron it but that she couldn't give me a haircut that looked good blow dried, that's just extremely odd thing to say to me. Oh, I forgot to mention that she's already cut my bangs quite short (above the eyebrow) but didn't dry those. So, she flat ironed my hair stick straight including my bangs, which were now short but still kind of swooped to one side. None of this was done with any product which, maybe I've just drank the Kool-Aid on hair styling, but especially hair like mine needs product when being blown out. Also, it was done with giant chunks of my hair rather than taking small sections and drying each bit. I'm not one to try to tell someone how to do their profession so I just assumed she had a different technique than what I am used to. But her technique didn't work on my hair. The hair length was extremely, obviously uneven which I pointed out and she then spent a while trying to fix. I didn't mention the bangs not being up to snuff because all that could happen would be cutting them shorter and I was already scared of how short they were. Finally finished, I was charged $95 for a haircut that was not well done and embarrassing bangs that I'm stuck with until they grow out. I don't think I've been charged that much anywhere but the top salons in DC. This was not a case of not getting the style that I wanted. This was a situation of a stylist that was unable to cut my hair. I'm extremely disappointed as this salon was close to home and had great yelp reviews, I had high hopes. Had a coupon for this place so I decided to try it. I'm not fussy about my hair and normally get a very no-nonsense cut at Hair Cuttery. Even with the coupon, I was paying more than I do at HC, but this is obviously an upscale place so I figured it would be worth it. The staff took the coupon, no problem there. But when I requested long layers in the back, the hairdresser said layers weren't included in the "basic cut" that the coupon was for. Whatever! - I get long layers at HC all the time and they don't charge me extra. Another thing that was odd was the lady spent about 10 minutes actually cutting my hair, and about 20 minutes blow-drying it. Not sure how she cut it so fast, but the extensive blow-drying ended up making my hair look a bit fried. The cut was okay but nothing special. No way would I pay full price here. Sorry, but Spa Mesu just didn't do it for me. read more

I was given a gift certificate for Xmas for a massage, have been calling the spa for the past 6 months and every time I called I was told that there will be a masseuse available in a month, two weeks etc. Six months later still nothing. Decided to use the gift certificate to get a Brazilian instead, the lady who did it had no idea what she was doing, she used honey wax with strips which for anyone who has ever had a Brazilian knows you only use hard wax, I was so sore and pain for hours afterwards. She has given me short 'dos, long layers and everything in between. Every haircut has been incredible (and I have curls!). Her staff are also incredibly professional and talented. I've been going to Mesu for about 20 years. She and her staff are great and I love the atmosphere. I have very thick natural hair and she knows just what to do with it! She gives excellent advice on what to do between visits, since I only go about every three to four months for layers and trims. In the past she gave me the best relaxers ever, becasue my scalp is very sensitive. She also does an excellent job with highlights. Consuelo also does an excellent job. She's gave my daughter a nice trim and she and Mesu have helped to get her hair back in shape after being severly damaged. I highly recommend Spa Mesu for all types of hair, because it is the best! Had a simple cut and blow dry with Mesu and it was a great experience from start to finish. They have a new online booking system that was extremely easy to use. We did a thorough consult upon arrival and then got started. When offered something to drink - go for the hot tea as it is amazing and exotic. I went for a mani/pedi this past Saturday. I recommend making an appointment as there is only one woman who does nails (Marcella). The nail area is in the back of the spa, in a private section, which enabled me to better relax. The music is relaxing, they have coffee, juice tea and water as well as have massage chairs and soothing wall paint. Very nice atmosphere without being over the top. Marcella was super nice; she didn't spend the time chatting away, so I was really able to relax (though she is happy to chat if you want to). Both the manicure and pedicure included a nice massage and detailed skin and nail care (scrub, lotions, cuticle lotion, nail filing & buffing, cuticle clipping, etc.). My only complaint is that the polish selection, while varied, is old. Some of the bottles are almost empty and other polishes are separating/old. I tried to choose a color I wanted, and a bottle not too old. I settled on Are We There Yet by OPI. By day two, three of my finger nails had chipped, even though she used base polish as well as top coat. Next time I'll bring my own bottle of polish. Other than my polish chipping the experience was wonderful. The prices are fair for a spa in the Silver Spring area, parking was simple enough (metered street parking all around as well as a public lot; no charge on weekends) and every one was extremely friendly. Mesu herself quickly checked in on me when I arrived, and when I was leaving. The receptionist (male; didn't catch his name), made sure I was satisfied with my service, helped me put my coat on, and asked if I needed assistance booking any future services; when I said not at the moment, he handed me the card of Marcella and said I could call anytime and they would be happy to see me again. Overall wonderful experience, just wish the polish was better. I can't wait to come back and get my hair done as well as future nail services. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! I originally went to Spa Mesu because I live nearby. I had been trying several hair salons in the area and was really hoping to find one that was nice and clean with great customer service that would also not break the bank. I am so glad I tried it. Mesu does my hair and she is so great, such a calm and lovely disposition, puts you right at ease and you can either chat or just be quiet depending on the kind of day you are having. She did an awesome job on my highlights (foil) and it was such a reasonable price - I am used to spending close to $200 easily for a hair appointment and I think my bill was half this AND I had my eyebrows waxed too! It was seriously wonderful. I decided to have Mesu do my hair (and my bridal party) for my wedding (September 2010). Everyone looked gorgeous! We all felt so comfortable in the salon and we really did take over the place with many women, a photographer, a makeup artist - woo - Mesu and staff took great care of us and made sure we had everything we wanted and needed and never made us feel badly for taking over the place. Mesu and I worked out a price that was within my budget for all of the ladies to have their hair done and I really have nothing bad to say at all! Mesu invited the makeup artist to have a station in the salon and made sure she had enough space to work and I was just overwhelmed with how professional and courteous everyone was - especially because I was kind of a basket case on the day of my wedding. Several of us also had our nails and toes done and those were perfect as well. They have awesome massage chairs to sit in. I highly recommend this salon for hair styling, color, cuts and also waxing and nails! Two of my friends have already gone on my recommendation - one of them said "that was the best haircut I have ever had" and they both were very thankful that I suggested the salon. I recently moved to the area and after reading so many positive reviews of Spa Mesu, decided to give it a try for haircut. I was able to get an appointment very quickly, but was disappointed with the haircut (by Daechele). I asked for long layers with soft edges (what I normally tell my stylist) and I got a very blunt cut with randomly shorter chunks. It looks like I tried to cut my own hair. The edges are anything but soft and since I only got it washed and cut, it was very difficult to see until my hair was dried straight. She never checked to see that the cut was even on both sides and it's not. Aside from being dissatisfied with a $45 cut (w/o blow dry), my experience there was fine. They took my jacket upon walking into the salon, were very friendly and offered me a beverage. The staff is extremely nice and friendly, but I was looking for a place to get a quality haircut, and I'm not sure this is it. Will be asking for other recommendations in the area to get this patched up. Perhaps other stylists would be better. read more

I really wanted to try this place. My friend recently went to Spa Mesu because of a discount coupon from Amazon Local. She said she had a wonderful mani and pedi. She said that she would go back and thought that I would find the atmosphere to be very relaxing. Great I thought, close to my house and relaxing. I needed a massage badly. I went on Spa Mesu's website and saw the prices were good. This is where it all goes down hill for me! I called to make an appointment from the vast array of massage offerings. I was told they didn't have anyone for me. I thought ok and asked, you don't have anyone available for me right now? She rudely told me no I don't have anyone. I said ok, well what if I come tomorrow, will you have someone available then? She once again rudely told me no I don't have anybody for you. I finally got it, they don't have any massage therapists. I said oh, well perhaps I can call back another time then? She said fine and slammed the phone down on me!! Are you serious??? I call trying to give you business and you are rude to me??? I'm not sure why they have all those massage options and no one to fulfill them. Perhaps the massage therapist recently got ill or quit, I'm not sure. But what I do know is that you should NOT be rude to potential clients. Why not apologize for not having a massage therapist currently but ask me to please do call back again soon. What about we have other services like a mani or pedi that you can enjoy now. How about any other option other than slamming the phone down in my ear. Rest assured, I will NEVER EVER go there. Even if Spa Mesu got a massage therapist today I wouldn't patronize this business. You only have one chance to make a first impression and my first impression of them sucks. Customer service goes a long way and seems to be a dying art among businesses. Needless to say, I hung from that person at Spa Mesu and ended up finding a great spa, Jamachi, not more than 10 mins away where I had a great experience!! read more

Recently moved from NY and was tentative to visit a new spa...after reading the positive reviews about Spa Mesu, I booked an appt for hair color. Upon entering, it was immediately apparent that I had found my new spot in MD. The receptionist kindly took my coat and led me to Mesu, whose lovely demeanor instantly brightened my day. After bringing me a delicious glass of tea and putting my bag away for me, we began the consultation and she helped me figure out what style would be best. She checked her color supply and then came back and explained that she wanted to place an order with her supplier to give me more options and ensure my satisfaction with the shade. We rescheduled for a few days later, and she encouraged me to take my time and finish my tea, "No need to rush." I am elated to have found such a wonderful business, Mesu is clearly passionate and full of care--the real deal! Can't wait to go back next week. read more

I just had to write to say how pleased I was with my haircut by Mesu. I have not had a regular stylist for many years, as I have moved repeatedly the past 12 years. I have fine hair with some natural wave (that seems to be thinning :( and I have had so many bad haircuts with people trying to make my hair do something it just can't do or who gave me a cut that was too much work to maintain. I am not a high maintenance hair girl, evidenced by the fact that I haven't had a cut in 6 months. When I entered the spa I had planned to tell Mesu the cut I wanted, instead of my usual routine of asking the stylist how they thought I should cut it (because that always ended up with less than perfect results).
