Really regretting my purchase of two rolls to-go. I asked for a side of eel sauce and wasn't given any in my bag nor was I even given any soy sauce. Even the grocery store sushi packages have soy sauce packets in them...and it's too bad because both of the rolls I got really needed some sort of sauce. Both were really just "meh". And to top it all off the host was rude to me when I tried to pay with my groupon. He told me that it was only for dine-in and when I tried to say ok I'll pay with a credit card he proceeded to interrupt me and inform me that it says dine in only on the groupon in a rude and condescending tone. After that comment I decided not to leave a tip because if I've only been around you for 3 minutes and you're already being rude you don't deserve a tip in my opinion. When I handed him back my signed receipt he gave a sarcastic "Thanks a lot" as I turned around. There are too many other good sushi places in the area with much more pleasant wait staff for you to waste your time and money on this place. Locals-my recommendation is to avoid if possible. read more

With a hankering for seafood of some sort because we were at a beach, my friends and I settled for this sushi bar right near our parking spot. When we walked in, we noticed how fitting the decor was and that it had a nice ambiance to it. The food ended up being a little bit pricier than we thought but the justification was that we were at a tourist trap of a city and were having sushi. There were other things on the menu besides sushi but I personally figured that I went to a sushi bar to have sushi, not other things. The problem I had with this meal overall was that I had sore in my mouth right behind my front teeth so eating everything, especially sushi in one bite, was quite painful. However, the ginger was good and the wasabi potent. Good restaurant but not mindblowing. My friend ordered the chicken hibachi entree which came with soup and salad. She didn't really want the salad so I took it and it was fairly decent. The greens were actually fresh and the combination of which vegetables they picked worked well together. It was drizzled in a ginger sesame dressing that had a good amount of tang to it. I first had Unagi which is freshwater eel for those of you unfamiliar with it. Apologies for my picture being so bright but the restaurant had dim lighting and all I shoot with is a point-and-shoot so flash was needed. It was a generous chunk of eel with the right amount of sauce over it. Not as bony as others that I've had, the eel was cooked well and the rice a fitting size. I had my friend try some even though he doesn't like fish or seafood in general and he actually approved! Next was their Hamachi roll which is Japanese amberjack/yellowtail. My favorite! The roll had cucumber, scallions, and small roe. It was refreshing and nice. The rice was a little too much (it was a rather tall roll) and hid the texture of the fish somewhat but overall, a good roll. My second roll was their Golden Scallop roll which consisted of baked scallops on top (complete with with smothered in Japanese mayo) and spicy tuna on the bottom. It looked a bit overwhelming because the topping was overflowing on the big pieces of the roll. I liked this one a lot because the spicy tuna had just enough kick to complement the mayo-y scallops. It was a heavy roll though, and I had a hard time getting through all the pieces. Perhaps they should let up on the mayo next time! read more

Unanimous awful reviews from our group. Had good expectations based on the menu which sounded great but all of our rolls ranged from mediocre to inedible. Menu descriptions were also way off and I'm pretty sure they substituted scallop for crab on 2 rolls. Honestly everything was bad including the dumplings. I bought a Groupon for the location before vacationing at Virginia beach. I stopped in with my husband on Memorial day. The wait for the 3 rolls my husband and I ordered was longer than expected, but the sushi was fresh and yummy once it arrived. At first, we were only given enough ginger for 3 pieces of sushi, we asked for more and problem solved. Service was okay, I enjoyed the Japanese decor kept around the restaurant. Despite being among right in the middle of the Virginia Beach oceanfront, this place has the vibe of a hidden gem. The staff let us, a group of 9, in 3 whole minutes before they stopped seating tables. They treated us like we were their favorite long time customers rather than a late night large group. Our first visit was good with good service, fresh fresh and where they made our order correctly (we always ask for sushi without rice). So obviously we returned. The second visit fish was great again, but they didn't make any effort to make our order correctly (don't know if it was because of the server or chef). We didn't make a fuss and just scrapped off all the rice but it made the experience terrible. As well our service was terrible. Didn't bring us water, didn't bring us sauce, we didn't even have napkins until after appetizers. We have a 6 year old with us and the service was so slow- we spent 2 hours at the restaurant. It took 1hr10 minutes to wait for our food and just to pay it took 30 mins between the time we finally received our check to when the server took it to pay. My family was very disappointed with this experience and definitely turned us off from this place. We won't be returning. Sad because there is potential. read more

The only good thing about this food was that I was able To Grubhub it to my room. My husband I got 4 sushi rolls and a scallop/shrimp noodle dish all to share. The sushi was barely edible. First of all, the Hilton parking is not across the street from soya, it's behind on the opposite block but is under construction and closed at the moment, so parking is a little bit of an issue. Otherwise the ambiance is very nice, could be a cool date place. They have quail eggs!! Our little group did oyster, quail egg shooters and it was pretty darn good. I had some tuna tartar and quail egg nigiri, and a SOB roll. All amazing. The waitress we had was on the ball and memorized our whole order, amazing. Soya is the undisputed sushi champ of VA Beach as far as I'm concerned. I've been eating at Soya since 2008 and just now getting around to a review. Why so long? Well, I always bring at least four friends or family here each trip, so I spend more time enjoying their company (and Soya) than playing on my phone. Now it finally occurs to me I'll never have a moment there by myself, so it's about time I give a review. Some things you should know: 1) If you don't order the negamaki appetizer, you are failing at life. 2) You will wait for your specialty rolls. Get over it. You're on Yelp, so your life isn't worth as much as you think it is. 3) Order a bottle of plum wine to go with your sushi. Also, I highly recommend the Lion King roll. There are few items on this planet better than baked salmon. Soya does it right. And be prepared to share with your friends. They're going to want to try everything after they taste how great their own food is. read more

This is a high quality restaurant. The scenery is great I love the fish display l. Its feels very modern. I am a very picky eater and if I end up liking a food even remotely that usually means that it is good food. I liked this restaurant more than remotely in fact I think the cooking is exceptional. I doubt that Gordon Ramsay himself cooked it but I do believe that whoever cooked my food has lots of talent. I highly recommend soya when you want some high quality sushi I will definitely be returning often. read more

I was really excited to try this place because of the four star average. I'm only giving three for several reasons. 1. Parking was horrible. Obviously it's right on the oceanfront so it's hard to park anyway but it was literally so packed we had to pay 10$ and walk four blocks. Just be prepared for that added cost. 2. The restaurant itself was fairly dark inside and not very inviting. I've been to other restaurants much more open and updated, it's just ok for decor. 3. The seating was tight. With a family of 5 crammed into a small table area we were almost on top of each other. 4. I ordered a shrimp dumpling appetizer for about 6$ which consisted of 6 small dumplings about the size of a quarter. I've never seen anything like it. Now for the positives... the server was a very friendly young man. The sushi was overpriced but good. Thankfully I had a Groupon so that helped but if I didn't, my review would have been 2 stars. I won't be going back unless there is some crazy Groupon deal to make the parking cost and walk to get there worth it. There are so many other portions. read more

We had a good meal at Soya and I can't complain about the taste or service. However, if I'm being a sushi snob, then the sashimi in my sashimi appetizer was not cut nicely but in rather big chunks. It was super fresh so it didn't matter, but it was a bit disappointing. That said, the SOB roll was delicious and something different. I ordered the veggie yakisoba for my kids and it was fantastic. My husband said the chirashizushi was good, but I think the knife skills were also lacking on his. Overall I would definitely return and eat here again if at the Oceanfront. read more

Food was pretty good. My sister ordered the New York strip hibachi and it was a very good portion, more than enough. The sushi was great and service was fast and consistent. Only negative thing I have to say is that my avocado roll was somehow stale. They did mess up one of my rolls but quickly fixed it! Will be eating here again. read more

It's been over 2 years since my last review here so it is time for an update, but not much has changed really. And I mean that in a good way. The Atkins roll is still one of the best rolls in Hampton Roads, if not the best. The service is good and the atmosphere is intimate enough to take a date here. We usually go on the earlier side with the kids. I've never tried their sake selection, but I am told that it is good. The sushi chef is very skilled, but is not the most outgoing individual, but I don't show up here for small talk. read more

When I entered the almost empty restaurant, I was ignored by the waitress for a good 10 minutes. Not willing to solely base my experience on the shoddy greeting, I sat down and ordered off the sushi menu. The waitress continued to ignore me for a good while until I was able to flag her down to ask her a question. My question to her was: "How many pieces of sashimi do you get in one order?" Her reply was to roll her eyes and say "Do you even KNOW what sashimi is?". Now I wasn't going to get in it with her, but since I had lived in Japan for about 3 years I was definitely certain of I was ordering. I ordered my salmon sashimi and catepillar roll and finished (the food was alright, I will give them that). But as soon as I was done with my order, the waitress looked at me and snottily said "You're not going to eat more?". I'm visiting from DC and was a bit concerned about going after some of the reviews but I'm glad I ignored them - Soya is a very solid sushi restaurant. I had the Chirashi bowl of sashimi and was very impressed by the quality and size of the serving. In my opinion the price is perfectly normal, but since VB hosts large amounts visitors from all over the area, it is only expected that some visitors think the prices are a lot but any one from a major suburban area or city will actually find the prices quite attractive. The servers are great too... They maintain the casual beach vibe but are also attentive. Will be back for sure. read more

Had a nice takeout experience here last weekend while in town for my uncle's memorial. They are five mins from the HIlton and I needed a quick and healthy dinner- They did the trick with one roll (escaraole with cilantro, very fresh) and 3 orders each nigiri salmon and hamachi.
