This is a regular date spot for several reasons. First I love that though Soya is located at the Oceanfront there's free 2 hour parking for patrons in the parking garage attached to the building. Our server's name was Hayden and he was helpful and patient as we decided what we wanted. I had purchased a Groupon and had no problem redeeming it. The Groupon was able to be used on anything other than the bento box and alcohol. My wife and I ordered the Volcano Rolls and the VB Crunch Rolls. We were drawn to those not only for the ingredients but also because we got 10 pieces each. The sushi came out promptly and they were both SO good. Came here for lunch since we had a Groupon. It was a Sunday afternoon and the weather was nice so there were a few more people than last time I came. We were seated quickly. There was only one server for about 5-6 tables so the service was a little slow. I got a sweet tea to drink and it was sweet, so I was very happy!! We got miso soup to start and two sushi rolls each. I got the calamari and Philadelphia rolls. The calamari was my favorite. My husband got the kamikaze and volcano II rolls. He thought they were too spicy so switched. Decent size place with plenty of seating. I like that there are sections of seating. More intimate. Our server was great. I had a couple of questions and she was more than happy to help. I ordered a hot tea right away because it was super cold out. She brought it right away. We ordered appetizers and when my husband also ordered a hot tea she brought us an entire pot of hot tea. THat was FANTASTIC. I had never been brought the whole pot of tea before. Our appetizers came quickly but the flavor and consistency of the Gyoza- pork dumpling were underwhelming. We also got the Yakitori-grilled chicken skewers, They were nice and hot but the texture was like they were raw in the middle. Main Food came quickly as well. Ordered the Rainbow Roll, that was good and we also ordered the VA Beach Crunch Roll-it says spicy tuna but it really wasn't spicy. We enjoyed the flavor and freshness of our rolls. If you happen to look up at the ceiling you will see where someone has shot toothpicks up there. Totally bizarre. Overall I will give them a solid 4. 3 years from my last review and the place is still awesome. As always I sat at the bar and Charlie helped me and was very friendly. Didn't have to ask for water and my wine was always full. They are under new ownership but nothing has changed. Same fresh and tasty rolls. Same best dressing ever. I could eat it everyday. In fact I usually don't like a lot of dressing on my salad but this dressing makes me want to drown my salad. I wonder if they sell it to go????? I got the Watermelon and Carli roll and both were so fresh. I was hesitant to get the Carli because of the bacon but it didn't overwhelm the sushi. And the Watermelon is still my favorite. I do hope the new owners make some changes to make it more their restaurant. Maybe weekly roll specials. Or a Bento Box. I do love a Bento Box. I have been coming to this place for a very long time and It's sad to say that it might be a very long time before i consicer coming back to this place again. The food was great, no doubt about it, which is why out of all the other sushi places there is, I personally loved the atmosphere and never had a complaint about the food. However; today a mistake was made due to language barrier and instead of helping us, they decided to take it to their advantage just to make a sale. When we got to Soya, since we have been going there for a long time now.... we already knew where we wanted to sit and we already knew what we wanted to have.... since we get the same thing every time. The waitress "which also happened to be the owner apparently" came to get our orders.... we started off with 9 rolls all together and 4 cups of water. NOT ONLY it took almost 15 minutes just to get us 4 straws, but the customer service can DEFINITELY IMPROVE !!! But anyways...... After we had out main course of a set number of sushi rolls, at the end we decided to get 3 more rolls. Since I was busy eating with my daughter, my wife decided to go and place 3 more rolls. At first, she asked for 3 "dragon rolls".... but then she went back and told the "owner" to make 2 dragon rolls and 1 philladelphia instead. When the order came back to the table.... there was 5 dragon rolls and 1 philladelphia. When we tried to let them know there is some sort of mistake, they didnt seem to care about it, so when I went to ask for the manager, the lady that I was talking to, she claimed to be the "owner" and she said, there is NOTHING they can do about it and pretty much that we are stuck with it, beacause when I asked if I can send 2 rolls back to them, they said "yeah we can take them back.. but it will still be on our bill". So when I explained to them that you can obviously tell that my wife had a language barrier and tried to fix the order, the response I got from the owner was "maybe someone else who speaks english should make the order !" OVERALL There is nothing to complain about the food itself, other then sometimes it takes a little long to get the order due to the amount of workers there is currently at the time...... but I DO recommend a little more training in the "customer service" and on "hospitality". read more

I want to like this place and make it a frequent visit because it's walking distance from my apartment but the service has been terrible both times. I have no problem with the food. It's good but I've had the same guy twice and he's just terrible. Very polite and apologetic but that's not enough. This last time he gave me sweet and low when I specifically asked for Splenda and he said they had it. No straw or silverware to stir it. Had to ask the other waiter for the fork I asked him for. After I asked he promptly started doing other things like setting up another table. By the time I got my fork to eat salad my entree came out. I asked for chicken and steak. He gave me shrimp and steak. Did not adjust the bill. Never checked on me or attempted to make contact after dropping off my food until I was done. Stood at bar and ate from a full plate of food which I think is unprofessional. Eat in the back! Stick some snacks under the bar and nibble - something! I know they have to eat too but find a better way. Never re-filled my tea. It was a bit amazing how bad he was considering I was his only table. There was only one other couple in the whole place and another server had them. No sense of situational awareness. Luckily she knew her stuff well and walked me through four rolls (my entire final vaca lunch was sushi, my daughter loves a good roll also, and then introducing my bf to some new things), as well as the teriyaki/hibachi for those less adventurous with this said, I ate the entire "burrito" sliced roll but for two, one for him to try and one for the daughter! We ordered the watermelon roll and crunching tiger roll. We enjoyed the watermelon roll very very much! It was very refreshing, the roll has avocado and fish, and is named after the pink and green colors, not the fruit. We thought the name of crunching tiger was a funny play on words and sounded like crouching tiger. We were worried that our parking meter would run out, but I was grateful when we had the excellent idea to send one of us down to the car before the meter ran out, and the other person take care of the check. Nonetheless, we had a good time, were seated promptly and found decent value in our selection of food which was a combination of sushi, edamame, and a hibachi platter. We enjoyed all of it - truly! The restaurant itself was nicely decorated with a chill ambiance including music and a small fish tank. We'll take off one star for both orders of edamame being just the slightest bit overcooked and the service is currently slow - they openly admit on their front door they have a staffing problem at the moment. The service itself was friendly, just a tad slow even considering the hiring shortage. Sushi was decent but the Salmon sashimi lacked much flavor, frankly, which was surprising because its appearance looked so delicious. The hibachi chicken was a nice selection of rice, vegetables and chicken, along with miso soup and a light salad mostly comprised of iceberg lettuce with a token tomato and two slices of cucumber for good measure. The restrooms, while clean, had a broken trash can which meant you had to manually lift the top to throw out your towel, which was a little gross. read more

We stayed at a oceanfront hotel in Virginia Beach this weekend and wanted some sushi ! This place came highly recommended based on Yelp reviews! Also, they are open to 10pm so that was a major plus! So, walked over on Friday night. My review is based on dining in experience during COVID-19. At first, I was a little turned off by the lack of warm welcome when we entered. Also, the time it took to clean off the table. Yet, they turned it around. For starters, I ordered the Edamame. I love how warm they were. I also loved that it had just the right amount of sprinkling of salt. For sushi, I ordered The Rainbow, Surf and Turf, and Volcano rolls. They all were very delicious and fresh. I really wanted to try the Lobster roll but they were out. Unfortunately, I can't comment on the drinks as I only ordered soda water. All In All, the food was delicious . My family and I went to Virginia Beach for a mini vacation. A few of us decided to try getting a drink at this little restaurant and we ordered a key lime crusher and it was so good. Lee was great to us and made us feel important. So we decided to bring the whole family back for dinner and there was 8 of us. We sat on the patio and it was great, we ordered 2 rookie shrimp boils. The service was extremely slow, the waitress was nice but it took forever for two sushi rolls. We literally waited an hour and the restaurant was only half full. A couple set down 20 minutes after us and actually got served before us, so the service was very inconsistent. When they finally brought the food to us, the presentation was a 3 out of 10, the rice on the rolls was too soft and they fell apart when you tried to pick them up. The rice must have just been cooked, and that's a big no-no with sushi. They tasted very average, not bad but not great either, about the same as what you can find in a grocery store. Still, the bar was okay and the service was great. We had miso soup, which was salty, and had two mini pieces of tofu hiding at the bottom. We shared a Nemo Roll, a Volcano Roll, and an Alaskan Roll.
