Walked by and saw the lunch special was $14.95 for miso soup, salad, California roll, fried shrimp, chicken or scallops, and ice cream for dessert. We called the next day to see what hours they served this and they said until 4pm. Since it was a beautiful day on the beach we waited a while and then went for lunch. We were greeted and seated immediately. Beautiful decor.We both chose the scallops. Our server was a lovely young lady. My husband was happy with Japanese beer. Big 22 Oz can. After our California rolls we were expecting and would have been happy with dessert. We had forgotten about the proteins. They were the best fried scallops, large, piping hot, very crispy coated with panko crumbs and served with sweet chili sauce. Dessert was cookies and cream ice cream. Probably would have preferred another flavor, but hey wasn't going to complain at that point. Best deal one block from the beach! read more

Awful experience here. The sushi came out mixed together and not separated per persons order. Why order separate if you're going to mix it all up. The sashimi was not cut neatly, the rolls were messy and the plating was meh. the flavors were not great either. I was extremely disappointed with my meal. on top of that our water was refilled with warm water. After waiting at least 15 mins for a refill we were finished and our dirty plates were never prebussed and our check took another 15 mins to receive. To top it off, our bill was already charged 20% gratuity. It was $190 for 5 people with the gratuity added. after the poor service and the issues with the food I wouldn't have given a $30 tip. once given the receipt to sign, the receipt asked/generated suggestions for another 20-30% tip on top of that. Edit: I double checked the restaurant I have reviewed, yes it is the correct restaurant and the receipt did add gratuity and then calculates and provides a tip percentage for an additional tip. read more

We got a couple signature rolls; the Carli and the Charlie Brown. The Carli was a beautiful roll with a cloud slice if scallop on top and a little spicy sauce. It was absolutely delish! The Charlie Brown was large, at least as big as a couple normal size rolls. The salmon on top was seared with a torch just prior to adding the sauce. Amazing!! You'll love it! Sushi was fast and fresh. They have a 5 course lunch special which the husband and son ordered. Comes with soup, salad, sushi roll and choice of fried fish or shrimp and a green tea icecream cone to walkout with, can't beat that! I ordered the the Charlie Brown roll without rice, I haven't meet a torched scallop that I didn't like. They dont have a kids menu so my girl ordered the chicken fried rice, it is a full entree size so be prepared for the large portion, works for my family just fine as I have a 16 year old that doesn't leave food to waste. Rate this place 3 1/2 - but can't do 1/2 in the selection. Started out with a wait at the hostess bar; noticed that the place is quite so to everyone being on their phones waiting for their food. Looked like they only had 3 wait personnel in duty- the tables around us looked like they were there for awhile. The service is none existent. We waited about 45 min for our order of sushi - even thought we ordered an appetizer we did not see it until we received the food. The sushi - to die for - 5 stars !!! So greasy soo amazing ! It's sad that the service is soo bad because the food would make this place 5 stars without a blink of an eye. With all the previously states issues I would recommend. read more

Stepped inside, no host. Waited to finally be acknowledged by the one server to seat us. Continued to wait after being seated, only to be ignored well after all of the other tables had left. After continuing to wait and watch the waitress simply stand behind the bar cleaning glasses we got the hint that she simply wasn't planning on asking us if we wanted anything. read more

Came for the first time and was pleased with the meal. I'm biased because my husband and I used to only go to Mahi Mah's for sushi when we're visiting, but it's closed now. COVID has made everything weird, but was very nice considering the awkwardness of not being able to smile at the hostess or waitress assisting you. The ambiance is great! I ordered a sushi special and for $25 I got a lot, plus it came with a salad and miso soup. I don't like miso, but that's not the restaurant's fault lol. My son got steak hibachi, which he loved!!! I tried it and the steak was juicy and tender. He also had gyoza and I had a seaweed salad for appetizers, which were awesome!! My son ordered a Japanese soda ($5, a bit pricey) and I had a beer. $100 total with a generous tip. Totally worth it. Service was excellent and our server was very attentive. It's located on the Oceanfront and parking is really problem and it would cost you $2/hour. I suggest to pay for 2 hours in advance, bc it will take about an hour to get your order and it is not in the busiest day/time. It is very nice place, actually. Food was great. We had voolkano rolls, Philadelphia, soya tempura, surf & turf, Dragon etc. Voolkano is the best:). There were couple flies that were flying over our food... I had high hopes for this place. We had a long wait for just about everything. There was only one waitress for the busy lunch crowd. Poor thing was running ragged. Ordered rolls with real crab and had too many pieces of shell. Our hibachi chicken was dry and the rice was stale from sitting out too long. We purchased a Groupon for this restaurant and it is a great deal. We get $40 worth of sushi goodness and boy we used it all. It's located right down the block from Catch 31 on the Oceanfront and parking could be tricky. The interior was small but nicely decorated. Our waitress was friendly and provided quick service. We ordered the volcano roll, Philadelphia, spicy salmon, surf and turf, Seattle, crunchy California. It wasn't too busy in the restaurant so we got our order fairly quickly. The volcano roll was one of the best in this area! There was plenty of tempura flakes which was awesome and the serving was plentiful. The crunchy California was delicious as well. My favorites were the Seattle and surf and turf roll. The Seattle had this creamy crab mixture on top which was bomb and the surf and turf had steak on top that was flamed before serving. Good eating! The Philadelphia and spicy salmon though were subpar as they tasted somewhat fishy. It wasn't too bad to the point I was not going to eat it but the taste was there. Overall, Soya has quality special rolls and I would love to try their kitchen selection. Good place for sushi at the oceanfront. read more

I visited Soya for lunch with a friend, and we had an enjoyable meal. This restaurant could easily blend in with the rest of the restaurants along the Virginia Beach boardwalk, but I was drawn in by the positive Yelp reviews and the desire to consume meat. For starters, we had miso soup, gyoza and yakitori. The soup was adequate, thought not exceptional, and the gyoza was also mediocre. The yakitori, while the standout of our starters, came in small portions. We did enjoy the salads that accompanied our grilled entrees. His hibachi steak and chicken was excellent, and I discovered my teriyaki New York strip to be equally well prepared. The teriyaki sauce was thick and delicious, and I also found great flavor in the house made sriracha sauce. The rice and vegetables which accompanied our main courses were a nice addition, though superfluous after our gauntlet of appetizers. We also ordered some sushi, in the form of yellowtail and white tuna nigiri. The serving of fish was large for both items, and the flavor divine. Though I found my steak enjoyable, I must also laud the sushi for being of high caliber. The service was good, the interior decoration somewhat lacking. Overall, this was a positive trip and we had a good meal. For boardwalk fare, this is a cut above the average. read more

Pretty good solid sushi, and convenient to the beach. I got the golden scallop roll which was a tuna rolled topped with flamed scallop and crab mix. This roll tasted great, but I did not see any scallop on top. It was mostly crab mix. I also got tuna and yellow tail shashimi and I liked them a lot, bc they were nice sized pieces and very fresh. Came here for some sush last night after reading all the good reviews. Well, we were very disappointed. should've left after no one there to greet when you walked in, pleace look like a take out restaurant, but wanted to give it a try. Poor quality sushi for the price, it was dry too. They charge the same as other higher end restaurants. They also charge for hot tea (same price for every refill, I did know) very poor business in my opinion, you should not charge for hot tea in a Japanese restaurants, to the owner, you're not serving any high quality tea to be charging your guests like that. We got aged tofu, miso soup and crab salad for appetizers. The tofu was perfectly crispy and well flavored the dipping sauce as well. This crab salad was the best crab salad I've ever had, very tangy and acidic yet slightly sweet! Miso soup was good! We also got two sushi rolls which were equally delicious. crunch roll and the money honey roll. Lastly the green tea ice cream, we ordered mochi but there was a miscommunication with the server and my partner didn't want to say anything. The environment was very warm considering it was freezing outside. Prices were good and I highly recommend this place overall.

It's more of an Asian fusion type place and they have a very limited menu, but what they do have is very, very good. I highly recommend trying that beef fried rice thing.
