Just arrived in town and did a quick search for a sushi spot on a Tuesday night. The place was empty except for the hostess who also was our waitress and two working at the sushi bar. We assumed it was a slow weeknight and decided to stay. Shortly thereafter, we greatly regretted our decision to stay. While the waitress/hostess was perfectly nice the food was the worse I've ever had, anywhere. I am not a picky eater and don't like to complain. I usually try to make the best of it but there was just no saving this meal. My wife and I ordered Kani Salads which arrived as a piles of poorly pulled apart Kani sticks drizzled sparingly with spicy mayo. That's it. Not a cucumber in site. No masago. I've never seen a Kani salad made like this in my 45 sushi eating years. It was disgusting. Imitation crab on a plate with mayo. Then out came the sushi rolls we ordered. The spider roll which is made with soft shell crab, was warm upon delivery, didn't stay together and the crab was soggy. Not even a hint of tempura on what is traditionally fried. I was pulling out rolled up soggy, from frozen and defrosted crab claws out of the roll. Gross. My spice tuna roll was just large chucks of chopped up tuna with avocado. They slathered the top with spicy mayo and that's what they called a spicy tuna roll??? My wife ordered a shrimp tempura roll which also arrived warm and falling apart. It was like they took freshly fried shrimp and didn't allow it to cool or drained of oil before rolling it up in nori and rice. The waitress was very sweet and brought us a Hawaii roll on the house. It was also warm and unappetizing. She also brought us two little pieces of cheese cake on the house. I don't know if this was their regular practice or if the waitress knew we were not enjoying the meal but we had totally lost our appetite. We promptly paid our bill and got out of there as fast as possible. Avoid this place like the plague. read more

Before ordering my food, I was served edamame which was tasty, Im still a little unsure how to eat it because it kept popping the little beans all over the table. It's a detriment to my wallet that my favorite VB sushi spot is a mile from work. My coworkers and I order from or visit at least once every couple of weeks. It doesn't matter if the place is packed or empty, the service is always top notch and we never wait too long for our orders. The sushi is tasty - great flavor options and a long (almost too long) list of specialty roll options. Favorite apps are the steamed shumai (though the accompanying sauce is overwhelmingly garlic, so I opt for plain soy sauce), gyoza and shrimp tempura. My own favorite rolls are the super duper, sweet potato (HUGE portion of sweet potato), avocado cucumber, super California, Iron Man and King Crab. You will ALWAYS get freebies - for us it's usually edamame to start and a large roll with our others. I think considering the portions and free food, the prices are really reasonable too. I absolutely love that they always accompany your meal with a free appetizer or dessert. I think that's so thoughtful. The food is so delicious. My favorites are the Superman (spicy salmon and avocado) and the Earthquake (spicy salmon, real crab meat, avocado) but there has been not one sushi roll that I did not like. I ordered the roll combo for $19.95 and added a salad. I got the Hawaii roll and a spicy tuna. I couldn't decide and asked for a recommendation. My husband got 3 spicy rolls....salmon, tuna and a california. They brought complimentary edamame to the table which was a nice touch. We ate it all. The presentation of our sushi was awesome!! Plenty of wasabi and even a small amount of seaweed salad. It was delicious and fresh but a box was definitely needed for leftovers. Side note....my salad was okay. It was spring mix with dressing. There was nothing else. I am actually okay with that because I like spring mix but just a heads up if you don't . I then had a sashimi plate served as an appetizer. it was two cuts of yellowtail(hamachi), tuna, white tuna (escolar) and salmon slices served with seaweed salad, ginger and wasabi. This was my star choice!! i love it with a fresh cup of rice like the same way I would eat "chirashi." For $17.95, I order the two rolls of volcano roll and spicy tuna roll with side salad. The volcano roll and the spicy tuna was plated nicely. The tempura was fried crispy eith the volcano roll. The spiciness I had expected the volcano roll to have was subpar along with the spicy tuna. I hoped for more heat. 4 Preferably, it was also more sweeter than I would like due to all the sauces plated with it . 3 The complimentary spring roll was crispy with a cabbage stuffed filling.
