I was invited to celebrate my niece's birthday this evening and I'm happy that she chose YamaChen's Sushi Restaurant on General Booth Blvd. The restaurant is very clean and it offer several different seating options to accommodate either a small group or a larger group like ours. We had 16 joining us in the celebration. The longer wooden booth that fit 12 of us had a few seat cushions available. And the smaller nearby booth sat the other 4 in our party. The booth looked comfortable with its thick padded upholstery. The restaurant's decor offered a festive vibe with the stylish decor, bright colorful lanterns, ample lighting, and fun helium balloons. Our server, Jonah provided exceptional service. He was very friendly and extremely attentive to all of our dining needs. He took our party's order and delivered everything from the food to the drinks so quickly. His fantastic customer service truly made the birthday celebration one for the books! YamaChen gives a nicely packaged single use chopsticks set that includes a napkin and toothpick. The presentation of every dish was lovely. Our party ordered the two boat combos to share, some specialty rolls, several salads, chicken teriyaki, and the pork katsu, to name a few menu items that were photographed. Just arrived in town and did a quick search for a sushi spot on a Tuesday night. The place was empty except for the hostess who also was our waitress and two working at the sushi bar. We assumed it was a slow weeknight and decided to stay. Shortly thereafter, we greatly regretted our decision to stay. While the waitress/hostess was perfectly nice the food was the worse I've ever had, anywhere. I am not a picky eater and don't like to complain. I usually try to make the best of it but there was just no saving this meal. My wife and I ordered Kani Salads which arrived as a piles of poorly pulled apart Kani sticks drizzled sparingly with spicy mayo. That's it. Not a cucumber in site. No masago. I've never seen a Kani salad made like this in my 45 sushi eating years. It was disgusting. Imitation crab on a plate with mayo. Then out came the sushi rolls we ordered. The spider roll which is made with soft shell crab, was warm upon delivery, didn't stay together and the crab was soggy. Not even a hint of tempura on what is traditionally fried. I was pulling out rolled up soggy, from frozen and defrosted crab claws out of the roll. Gross. My spice tuna roll was just large chucks of chopped up tuna with avocado. They slathered the top with spicy mayo and that's what they called a spicy tuna roll??? My wife ordered a shrimp tempura roll which also arrived warm and falling apart. It was like they took freshly fried shrimp and didn't allow it to cool or drained of oil before rolling it up in nori and rice. The waitress was very sweet and brought us a Hawaii roll on the house. It was also warm and unappetizing. She also brought us two little pieces of cheese cake on the house. I don't know if this was their regular practice or if the waitress knew we were not enjoying the meal but we had totally lost our appetite. The sushi is tasty - great flavor options and a long (almost too long) list of specialty roll options. Favorite apps are the steamed shumai (though the accompanying sauce is overwhelmingly garlic, so I opt for plain soy sauce), gyoza and shrimp tempura. My own favorite rolls are the super duper, sweet potato (HUGE portion of sweet potato), avocado cucumber, super California, Iron Man and King Crab. You will ALWAYS get freebies - for us it's usually edamame to start and a large roll with our others. I think considering the portions and free food, the prices are really reasonable too. YamaChen's is always my go-to sushi restaurant when I am craving tasty, fresh sushi. The restaurant is always very clean and the staff is always friendly. I absolutely love that they always accompany your meal with a free appetizer or dessert. I think that's so thoughtful. The food is so delicious. My favorites are the Superman (spicy salmon and avocado) and the Earthquake (spicy salmon, real crab meat, avocado) but there has been not one sushi roll that I did not like.
