I still remember Becky's from their Malate/Manila branch. After 20 something years, i visit one of…read moretheir branches and fall in love with the taste, ambiance, etc. The cafe has this old Filipino feel with Batibot cafeteria (wrought iron + wood) chairs and dark wooden accents. They have green plants on each table as a centerpiece. Currently, they have the cafe decked out in christmas decor of wreaths with glittery bright blue, purple and gold. The gift boxes come in a bright red color, very festive! They sort of highlight the store too since they are stacked in shelves behind the refrigerated cases. I convince my husband to spend a few mins to have a slice of cake and coffee. It only takes a few minutes to gobble up the cakes, im sure! I had the swiss chocolate cake that has the creamy meringue outside its chocolate sponge cake and honeycomb bits inside. Heaven! I swiped one of the two crinkles on my husband's plate. It was decadent! If you've never had chocolate crinkles before, you're missing out. Plus, I've been around and these are gold standard crinkles right here. The box of 24 is only 300 pesos! WORTH IT! We decided to get a box of 24 to eat later at home As I write this review, I just got home after two hours of driving. I have already polished 5/24 pcs. It had been left in the car for 5 hours before we actually headed home but it is amazingly soft and tastes freshly baked. I can't praise this bakery anymore than humanly possible. Just try it! The other branches might be closed but this one inside Valle Verde 1 village is still alive. On regular days they have plenty of lot parking in front of the basketball court.

In fact, it's still my mom's go to potluck contribution to any party or last minute Christmas gift to friends, as well as their addicting Chocolate Crinkles. If she ever comes home with any of them as a treat, I immediately zone in on the signature maroon box from Becky's and strategize the quickest way to get my hands on it then get to a safe place in the house where I wouldn't have to share. I'm happy they opened the branch in Valle Verde a while back because it's much nearer to where I live. What's more is that there's an actual dining area where you can have coffee and a slice of cake as opposed to their original branch in Taft with just the display cases, counter and some seating for waiting customers. If you have a chance to visit either location, I recommend their soft and flavorful Cheese Rolls and decadent Swiss Chocolate Cake in addition to their famous brownies and crinkles!

And yes, I do get a lot of, "But whyyy?" reactions from people. That aside, I do get occasional cravings -- days when I just really need something sweet to cap off a big meal or a reward after a long day. Purple Oven is the perfect place to satisfy my dessert desires. I love the Chocolate Campfire cake, it's rich, moist, chocolate cake that topped with marshmallow icing. MARSHMALLOW ICING! I suppose you could take a slice and sandwich it between graham crackers and call it a smore. For days when you just need a little sweetness, try the double chocolate chip cookie, choclate macademia cookie or chocolate dipped cookie (where literally have the cookie is dipped in chocolate). They're pricey at P60/cookie but they're a little bigger than my palm and the chocolate chips ooze out when you bite into the cookie. There is no scrimping on ingredients in Purple Oven. The products here would also make great presents. They're hefty and have the wow factor because of their packaging. The chocolate crinkles, lemon squares, brownies and revel bars would be great to share at the office while the cakes would be awesome to bring home to family or to impress in-laws. Enjoy!

And stare at the massive blocks of chocolates with biscuits and marshmallows, which they call Barks. Yes, they were delicious and my sweet tooth was more than satisfied. Lucky for me, when i happened to visit that day they had a promo: for Php 199 you can stuff as many pieces of chocolate barks as you can inside a plastic bag, and you can choose between white, dark, or milk chocolate. The catch is you can only do that from 3pm - 7pm. Otherwise, the regular price is Php 170 for 200 grams. A lady behind the counter told us that someone was able to actually fill their bag with up to 500 grams of chocolate barks which would be like getting it at more than 50% off compared to the regular price. We were able to fill our bags up to 350 grams (it was more than enough for us!) I'd recommend this store, especially because of the promo!

I came inside and found out a hidden treasure: their signature avocado cake. A poster on the wall tells us the recipe's origin. It seems to come from the owner's mother, Lia, who started baking as early as 10 years old. Carlo, the son, inherited from her the passion for baking. We can really feel this passion by trying the famous avocado cake. It's light, sweet in the right amount, that you don't feel heavy after eating it. They also serve some variations of the original recipe, like the Avocado Sansrival and the Avocado Cheesecake. For those who thinks avocado is too exotic, they also serve "mainstream" cakes like red velvet, caramel and chocolate. Lia's menu also includes meals, but it's not the focus. I would certainly go for the traditional avocado cake. Try it and you'll have a local flavour experience. It took me five good minutes to decide which slice to buy. In the end I got the cheesecake version, since practically everyone I know has tried the former. It cost Php 160 a slice, which I think is fair. The cheesecake was surprisingly good. I didn't expect avocado to go nicely with cream cheese mostly because I haven't tried them together before. I browsed their list of cakes and my curiosity burned even hotter when I saw the chocolate avocado flavored cake. I don't know about you but I'm a person who eats avocado with or without sugar, with or without ice and condensed milk. I'm crazy about avocados. It's safe for me to say that I now know where to go on my 22nd birthday.

Then, I stopped going 'cause I thought I had enough of their really good food. When I went back just last Sunday, I was pleasantly surprised. They added more dishes to their menu, they now have breakfast and free WiFi. I ordered what looked good (tapa) and begged my friends to try the new dishes so I could taste their food. The tapa tasted like bacon. It was crunchy and filling at the same time. The rest of the breakfast dishes tasted good, but I was happy and full with my tapa. Because I was so stuffed with oatmeal cookies, rum butter cupcakes and their Toblerone walnut torte, I got the rest for take-out. Got a couple of rolls, bacon and cheese, white cheese and corned beef. Here's a trick, buy their rolls and freeze them. When you're in the mood to have one or two, heat them up in an oven. Another tip, if you like their rolls. .You know, the ones they serve when you order a dish, ask the lady at the counter if they're selling any. Normally, they don't, but there are times the lady decides to sell a bag or two.

Bulgogi, Veggies, and Poached Egg over Brown Rice. Great for a post workout meal. Cleaner than a cup full of white rice for sure. I've been going to this place since 2012. I do miss the simplicity of their menu back then; especially when they had their Creole Chicken portion of 200g for only P175. I somewhat got turned off by its pricing and portion last time I visited them late last year. But, seeing that Bulgogi entree, I'll give them another chance on the main entree front. As far as dessert, you can always get it before vs after! There's no rule against it, and they're ice cream is always on point. The premise is looking quite fancy too; at least in the back area. The front area where the cashiers are is quite packed. They have a machine blocking most of what use to be the dining area, near the door. Regarding the staff, friendly and helpful as always. Just good luck parking as it gets pretty packed in that side of Capitol Drive when it's the meal rush time.
