This was my first time flying with Southwest & most likely my last time booking tickets with them. I travel pretty often with a little one & have been since he was a newborn. Southwest does not accommodate young travelers/families like other airlines. While they do offer boarding, it's after groups A & B. I'm also used to leaving a car seat at the gate for pickup as soon as we get off. As soon as we entered the plane, I asked the flight attendant if I was fine to leave my car seat there & they agreed. Southwest also has an open seating plan, meaning you don't have an assigned seat, you just pick one once you get in the plane. After we found seats & stowed out bag, they called out on the speaker of whose car seat was at the gate. I raised my hand & they were like why wasn't it checked. I said I confirmed several times it was good to go. I didn't appreciate being belittled by the lady (not sure of her name but she is at the desk in the picture. Had Southwest made their rules & policies about car seats clear, I would have properly followed them. This flight felt chaotic from the time we lined up to board until the plane took off. While I can appreciate the reasonably priced flights during the holiday time, the customer service & family friendly flights are just not what Southwest is about. read more

I can not complain. Southwest Airlines gives you what you pay for. Our first flight was a little rough on the landing. We came through the clouds a little faster than necessary and the captain had to slam the breaks! Our second flight was a lot better but we were late getting to the gate and had to board just ahead of B 30-60. We were with the A's 1-30 Our seats were the two exit row seats, not the comfortable stretch-out-your-legs exit row seats but the two little seats pinned together that are NOT suitable for guys 6' 3" and taller! Nonetheless I am thankful for a safe trip with interesting looking stewardess. read more

Southwest used to be awesome, but they've lowered the bar so much that I avoid them like the plague. I really was a huge fan, but after being delayed 10 of my last 11 flights, I had to stop using them. It's gotten so bad that I drive to an airport 90 min further from my house for my monthly flights. Once again, Southwest delivers! We were a party of five (2 small kids) and using Southwest was a must. We always get the seats we want and the staff are always great with the kids. Now that you charge for bags, it's not worth flying. You can't choose your seats, you have to pay to upgrade to ensure A-15. For the price, I'll be flying a different airline to ensure I can pick my seat and that my family can sit together. Your ticket prices are roughly the same as other airlines. I am leaving this review because I am disappointed in the fact that my mom who was to come for my daughters wedding could not fly anymore due to her Doctor and her illness. Sent in a letter hoping to get her ticket transfered to me so I could b use to visit her at some point but they could not give up the $240 ticket to me so we have to eat that cost. I hate leaving reviews, especially negative ones, but this has to be said. Have flown with Southwest for years because it was affordable and convenient. The last year of flights I've had with them have been miserable. Constantly dealing with delays and maintenance issues. Today, flying from Spokane to San Jose my flight was delayed over an hour for a broken bathroom. Turns out it was never fixed anyways, so the hour delay was pointless. This caused me to miss my connecting flight. Then, my new connecting flight was delayed because they did not have a flight attendant. No updates so we just had to wait until they arrived. I upgraded my boarding pass to ensure I would actually have a spot on this flight because so many had missed the previous flight due to delays. By the time I walk on the plane the flight attendant shoved her hand in my face, then told me to stop walking (which I obviously did because her hand was an inch from my face). I waited, and when she told me to walk she said "how are you doing" and by that point I did not know she was talking to me because our only interaction was her sticking her hand in my face. I did not respond as I was looking for a seat, to which she then said "well not very good I guess." I did not react because I was honestly surprised that a flight attendant would say something like that. I simply did not know she was talking to me. If I don't have anything nice to say, I won't say it. It's been an extremely frustrating day trying to get to where I need to be, and that was the most frustrating moment of it all- the flight attendant's condescending comment. read more

Literally the worst airline. Spirit is better. My whole family booked and checked in at the same time and yet our boarding positions were all different. This happened to many people on the flight. Additionally, after everyone boarded they had to "crunch numbers" whole we all sat in an extremely hot and humid plane with no AC running for an hour because it turns out the plane was "2000-3000 lbs overweight". How the heck does that even happen? Many people on the flight had a connecting flight they missed because of this screw up. I've never heard of this happening. AVOID SOUTHWEST AT ALL COSTS. read more

Reporting in & ready for takeoff! Overall, I enjoy Southwest Airlines the most for the 2 free luggage allowed. The checking in process is usually super stress free (unless you overpack like me). Coworker mentioned how it's like herding in cattle since there are no assigned seats, only birding groups, but it honestly isn't that bad. One of our flights didn't have WiFi, which was ugh, but even on another flight I connected and it didn't even work?? Must be a way that they're trying to get people to pay for the $8 WiFi. Liked the complimentary drinks and pretzels. All of the stewardesses were kind though they definitely walk with a purpose when going down the aisle. read more

I have always had good experiences with southwest airlines in the last 25 years. The customer service is outstanding. I had a bad experience a few years ago with a belligerent employee and they gave me a credit towards my next trip. My cousin had to cancel her Christmas visit last year because of the pandemic. I was told even though I paid for the ticket because it wasn't in my name I could not get a refund. Several months later after talking to someone that travels frequently told me that wasn't true I called again. A manager I believe did refund my credit card. I really appreciate that. It's just plain old common sense and good customer service. read more

How many other airlines would I give a 5 to? Try none...no one else even comes close to deserving. This review is not only for the local Norfolk Southwest, but the entire company. My recent flight through Chicago, Baltimore and Minneapolis was flawless. From check-in, to gate personnel to flight attendants incredibly friendly. When I check airfares I'm no different than others, look for best route at most reasonable cost. However, do factor in they allow two bags FREE of charge. Also no hidden garbage cost. It's up to you if you want to pay around $25 for early bird (priority) seating because there s no first class. Some limitations are food service. They at least do give you something, others have pulled back and charge for it all. Expect drinks, alcohol is available for a fee, pretzels and peanuts. Simple as that. The equipment I flew on was tidy and functional. One plane had brand new interior leather seating. I joked with the pilot when stepping on that I smelled new car smell. He laughed and said I was right, it was just installed. Also huge are most planes have FREE WiFi installed. I did check my bags and they arrived roundtrip without incident. Also check-in online worked without a hitch. I love receiving my boarding passes on my smart phone. What can I say, I'm a big fan of Southwest. Many things set them apart, but if there was one overwhelming item it's the people. So if your reading this management continue to invest in your personnel. Norfolk has been a 2nd home to me since my sister was born here and I have tons if family in this neck of the woods. I was very surprised and displeased at the service we received while checking in for our flight back to California. After you read this review I hope no other customer has to endure this type of situation cause no customer deserves to be treated this way and if you are an employee of this airport I hope you do not treat your customers this way. As a customer I would never expect after paying $2500 for plane tickets that customer service would be like this. I don't believe any customer would expect to receive this low level of service from an airline period. While checking into southwest the customer service associate named Sue. Right off the bat explained the situation of how our flights were delayed. Which I was not surprised, cause coming to VA from Cali our flights were delayed. But when Sue mentioned how our flight was delayed 4 hours. Seriously? Then we had a problem.  From there it was a down hill experience with southwest from there. Once our flights were changed Sue threw us into the B group number 55-59. We originally were in group A 30-35. That right there was uncalled for and compensation should have been provided. When talking with Sue she then complained to her manager stating we were the ones being rude and interrupting her. First of all, lying as a worker to cover your mistake and your poor customer service performance shows how bad you are at Your job. Then management was requested and finally someone who wanted to actually help smooth the situation out was at hand. Matt (Manager) told us that we will be moved to group A and we will get group A in Chicago where our flight transfer is. After this terrible customer service experience I do not see myself or my family flying through southwest ever again. For a company to hire a terrible representative and let them treat their customers like that says a lot about your company. And another customer who had the same flight as us, had their flight delayed until the following day. Delayed flight. The delay wasn't bad at all. I get bad weather, but when getting transferred to our other flight, our bags were left out in the rain and we're completely soaked when we retrieved them from baggage claims. Once we landed we were told that it would take 10 minutes for a gate to open, but it took an hour. Then we were told that handicapped passengers would have to wait longer due to not having any wheelchairs available. All around a horrible time. We had booked a flight in September to see our daughter graduate from A School in Great Lakes. We had to cancel because her duty schedule changed. We booked again, but the Navy did it again. Southwest couldn't refund our tickets, but we could use them by August 1, 2019. I called their Customer Relations Executive Offices to see about getting a refund. Because we booked the Gotta Get Away instead of the senior fare (which I didn't know even existed), we are not eligible for a refund. To my, I shouldn't matter how you book a fare, you should be eligible for a refund. Very disappointed in this outcome. read more

I pretty much never thought I'd be giving a 4 star rating to an airline again.... bc flying is awful but Southwest is doing it right. It's innovative and different and I have no complaints... I'm a Delta gal and I normally fly first class bc I'm a princess - and I was worried about SW bc I know there is no first or business class - everyone is the same. Now I'm fine with that really - it's the priority boarding and bag space I covet. Well with Early Bird check-in for $15 you can get a pretty good spot in line for boarding and it's not an issue. Today for example I paid for it ($30 at the desk bc I was trying to be cheap) and was A8 so 8th on the plane. I ended up sitting right up front and had my bag stored right in the overhead. WIN! Made friends with some folks flying along with me and we had a pleasant chat while we lined up waiting to board. Man - SW boarding is so much better than any other airline - people line up like they're supposed to and they wait patiently and they talk to one another about what number they are and it is what it is. I've never seen anything like that with Delta or United or American. I have to knock grown ass men outta the way to get to the front when they call for First Class who have all lined up although they are boarding zone 5 and they know damn well they ain't getting on the plane any time soon.... grrrr In-flight service is good and the stewardesses were friendly - the drinks were good - and no issues. My flight was non-stop to Orlando and it was about 15 minutes late but arrived 30 minutes early - waited a bit for my bag but got everything and had an excellent trip. SW might just bump Delta for top spot for me for short flights --- when it's gonna be long it's still gonna be first class for me --- I want the leg room! read more

My plane was delayed on the run way 3 hours. Sw knew the connecting flights were going to be missed. But promised hotel accommodations. We landed in mid way pasted 1 am. Once we landed they refused to give us our bags Bc we had connecting flights ( that were missed)They said sorry we aren't sure who told you we would give accommodations but WE DONT DO THAT. SW promised the entire plane this. but refusing to give me my bag why? The customer service at midway was a disgrace. And the customer relations was a joke. I love Southwest. While it's never cheap to fly especially if you fly across country, I have found that Southwest repeatedly has the cheapest flights from Norfolk to Burbank/LAX. Some people may not like the free seating that they have (rather than assigned seating) but really, if you know the system, you will find yourself with a comfortable seat. On flights of 4 hrs or more, they provide you with snacks (cookies and such) for free unlike the other US airlines. Most of the stewards and stewardesses are actually happy with their job and smile all the time. I don't think I ever met a rude Southwest employee. Free bags and you can bring a dog on board (but you have to make a reservation for them ahead of time). At ORF, they are one of the (if not the) biggest airlines. Highly recommended. Great airlines and always a pleasure to fly with them! read more

Anyone remember a few years ago when Southwest had great inexpensive flights and good customer service? I do, but not anymore. They have limited the flights they offer, prices have skyrocketed and customer service is horrible. Call them and get told one thing, call them back based off the first call and get told no, you need to do something else. And when you question as to why they say something different they regurgitate the same policy you heard on the previous call but now it is different and they treat you like it is your fault you do not understand that shifting policy. Southwest is the only way to go for my family of four. They have the best priced tickets, even if you pay the extra $10/ticket for early check-in to get a better seating position. Not to mention, no baggage fees! On our most recent trip to and from Milwaukee, each flight crew we had was awesome. They were friendly and funny. Our return flight stopped in Baltimore, but was continuing to Norfolk so we didn't have to change planes. While the flight crew was cleaning the plane between flights my six year old son had to use the bathroom. He was waiting at the front of the plane and the pilot invited him into the cockpit to wait. He sat up there for a good 10 minutes asking the pilot questions. He even got to touch the controls and say "Hi mom" over the cabin intercom. It was an experience he will not soon forget! The seats were fairly roomy, too. I'm 5'11, so leg room can be an issue, but even if the person in front of me reclined their seat, I had plenty of room. read more

DO BETTER SOUTHWEST. My Friday flight 1488 from Norfolk to Chicago last weekend was canceled for a poorly handled maintenance situation. By the time they told us close to 8am that our originally 6:30 AM flight had been canceled, the rest of the flights to Chicago on Southwest for the ENTIRE day were booked. And so began the shit show. Worst of all conflicting info: a lady ahead of me in line was offered a $200 voucher while an elderly man in a wheelchair was told he'd have to book through another airline and be reimbursed). By the time I got up to the ticket counter, I had rebooked w/ Delta because I knew Southwest couldn't get me on a plane that day and it was only a weekend trip - (a bachelorette weekend for my sister and I am a MOH. )So I ask the gate agent about compensation & she says I'll get an email in a couple days. She offered nothing else. I had to beg for a $10 food voucher. She found it in her heart. . Drink voucher? Nope. So I sat. I did make my trip...thanks to Delta. The following Thursday, still no @southwestair email. I called today. You have to call because apparently Southwest doesn't do email in 2018. I reach Customer Relations and was told 1) it's regrettable that you didn't receive the follow up email 2) "our policy is only to refund the price of the cancelled ticket". 3) I can't speak for what you heard a gate agent say and they don't know what we do in customer relations". Huh??? Consistency much? I informed her that I am a Customer Service Manager for a Fortune 500 company too and I simply didn't believe her. I listed my expenses: my cancelled flight $184, $400 flight on Delta, $30 baggage fee and 200 voucher for inconvenience at least. She stood firm. I asked for a supervisor and she said 4) All of the customer relations phone reps are supervisors. Yeah...OK Kim, I think her name was. I call BS on everything 1-4 that you've said. I know you do vouchers.And why do I have to BEG you to give me back my own coins???? $600 out.of.my.pocket is not chump change or inconvenient. It's MY MONEY and it's UNACCEPTABLE! We all insisted the families and others went first, but the fact that they gave us priority and showed us all a TON of respect even while out of uniform. I love flying Southwest. Their prices are almost always the cheapest that you can find, especially if you book early. The web only deals are very hard to beat. I'm also a fan of the "find your own seat" policy and it's worth checking in at home to get on an earlier boarding group. If you wait until the end and your flight is full you WILL sit between "sweaty fat guy" and "mom of baby with ear infection". Thank God for noise canceling headphones! Southwest also gives you a break on bag charges which is much appreciated by everyone. Also, the flight attendants are pretty hilarious if you're not one of these "I'm grumpy that I have to fly and be around people" people. I would give them 0 stars but its not an option. My family of 7 booked out first trip together in years. My older daughter has a baby so she and my son-in-law got to board as a family. The rest of us were in boarding group C. Meaning everyone on the plane boarded before us. Why??? Our tickets were not any cheaper than theirs. As soon as we got on the plane and saw there were a few scattered seats left I was worried. Then the stewardess tells us to take any seat. My grown sons grabbed a seat and a stewardess told my 11 year old daughter to sit down anywhere. She was between two strangers. She did not offer to ask anyone to move and everyone around me were sitting by their families! How can they do this? They cant assure me that my daughter is safe!!!! Thank you for finding my lost bag. I was surprised when they called me and said they had it. When I went to the counter the gentleman even new it was my bag" oh yes the one with the child's clothes and toys". Thank you. Ok so I just flew in from Portland Maine last night. Got to my final destination of VA at around 11:20pm. By the time I got my bags from baggage claim it was probably about midnight. When I got my bag I realized that one wheel was missing and another wheel was barely hanging on! So I went to the baggage claim office but of course no one was there. So I went to the southwest counter and they were gone for the night. I then called customer service in the morning. She says she doesn't think there is anything they can do because I was supposed to report within 4 hrs, I let her know how late I got in and she says she will do the claim anyway! When she starts looking up my ticket information she asks me if I purchased my ticket, I let her know that it was purchased by a nonprofit organization! She puts me on hold for about 30 minutes and then comes on the phone to tell me because the ticket was purchased by someone else and not me that I can't get reimbursed for my bag!!!!! I was so dam angry, because I don't understand why it should matter if the ticket was bought by someone else, that nothing can be done about my luggage that I purchased my self!!!! I bought a ticket to Florida and there was a layover in Atlanta, which was fine until my flight to Atlanta was delayed. Since the flight was delayed, I would have arrived in Atlanta later than my flight from Atlanta to Florida would depart. There were no "available options" to get me to Florida until two days after my scheduled flight. When I called to get it switched over, the man on the phone was not pleasant at all and put up an argument for changing my return flight a day later since I was already missing out on two days of my vacation because of them. He finally switched it but was very rude about it. I used to fly with Southwest a lot in the past; however, Jetblue was way more accommodating when the flight schedule was messed up and they were very friendly about it. read more

As anyone who flies knows, Southwest doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles working in their favor. There's no TV or music (unless you bring your own), there's no first class seating for the business traveler, there's no meal to be purchased on the plane (does anyone even eat those things?). What they're missing in jazz they make up for with sass. The flight attendants have a sense of humor, you can conveniently locate yourself next to that handsome gentleman/lady or away from the screaming child, and one time my friend got to hang out with some penquins on her flight from San Diego. read more
