I've never had a good experience flying American. My flights with this airline haven't just been flying from Norfolk International. They go back to the time I lived in Atlanta and flew out of Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson International. I've always experienced delayed flight. There have been other times the flight has boarded then sat on the tarmac for over an hour with no water offered. My worst delays were in Philadelphia. My worst tarmac experience was at Chicago O'Hare. Flying from Norfolk International requires taking an American Eagle flight to airports such as Charlotte & Reagan National to change planes. The layout of the Charlotte Airport makes flight changes difficult. I've run from one end of the airport to the other to make my flight. My sister recently came on American and experienced a long delay leaving for Reagan due to activities in DC. You've supposedly been doing this business a long time so I shouldn't have to recommend you not treat your passengers like fools. You rebooked my plane 4 times after the second day of not being able to fly out of Norfolk and the reason that you think you can blame it on is weather? The plane I was supposed to be on was LITERALLY sitting at the gate when you told me that it was delayed for weather and then cancelled my flight. I had AAnother AAmazing AAmerican AAirlines flight when I flew from CLT to ORF this week! I started at GSP, connected in CLT and then came to ORF. The crew onboard was fantastic and the flight was very quick. Definitely love being top tier on AA, but even before I had status, I was happy with the experience. Yes, there are delays or cancellations at times, but that happens with all airlines. Pick one and stick with it and gain status, but flying rarely and a utilizing a different airline each time and then whining about your negative experiences has gotten old... Read the majority of reviews about all airlines and it's the same story. Gaining status helps, but even if you fly only occasionally, expect issues and arrive early. Don't buy close connecting flights. Be prepared for the unexpected. read more

Update. If a plane is small and doesn't have overhead bin space for carry on bags, especially if a person is flying first class , the check in team should notify the guests at the ticketing counter, so that things can be transferred. Basic courtesy notification. Flying with equipment that can't be allowed to be out of a persons sight, is not negotiable. Not happy with the airline this morning. The young lady that was staffing the actual gate , was placed in a bad situation with multiple guests being upset. Not cool at all!!!! Do better American. The website didn't work. There was one flight attendant that was nice the rest sucked. One flight the chair didn't go back. I had a stiff neck. Second flight I thought they going make check my purse because they said it needed be in overhead but there weren't any room. So they allowed it by me. I've been flying with American Airlines for over 2 years, almost exclusively now and they have never let me down in all that time. I fly for business travel a good deal of the time and American Airlines has always earned my respect and loyalty. If I could give less than a star I would. Stuck at the airport for OVER 24 hours, no compassion what so ever by the staff, was treated as if I was a problem or inconvenience not an ACTUAL PAYING CUSTOMER. I am traveling with a person with an illness that requires medication and still was disregarded as if I was a bother. Instead of being told up front that it would be a while so I could arrange other means of getting home I've been lead on and having to wait with little to no information. I've spent over 300 dollars in subpar food, not to mention I cannot even sleep in peace because up until 2am a "practice" fire alarm has been going off non stop. Wow! Super busy early morning at Norfolk International, and the AA ticket agent was so helpful and friendly! We had e-boarding passes but had to get in the ticket line to get TSA Pre-check on them. Plenty of different lines for tickets, bag check, etc., and dropping off checked bags for screening was the fastest I've experienced in a long time. Great job, American! read more

I fly American the least, but all good on flights the last few months. They tend to be the most expensive and have less routes to where I travel most. My most recent American flight from Norfolk to DC to San Diego was on time each step. I felt safe the entire time. Staff wore mask the entire flight. They are now filling third rows. It's one step forward and 1,200 back for American. After the day I had today - I'll pay any price never to fly this airline. We arrived at 6am sharp this am for a 7:35 departure and check-in was quick despite the line. After that TSA was also pretty quick since we have pre-check. We board on time and taxi even a bit early to the runway - all the way. Then the pilot says he's on the line with maintenance. Then we taxi back. Then we have to deplane. They say we're going to be delayed 30 mins. No biggie we have almost two hours for our layover in Chicago. Increasingly over the next hour as we stood in line and say update after update we understood it wasn't departing soon and we'd miss it. My husband called and they said for us to just leave and "try again tomorrow". Nice. He had us rebooked in Chicago as long as we left by 10:45. Nope. Call back and rebook again - arguing with them about swapping to delta or united and they're saying it's full while we're checking and see a half-full plane. Finally, a supervisor does the swap. We go and collect our bags at baggage claim - go through United's check in and pay $115 for bags we just paid $90 for. We're told to "file a claim". Now - although we have United member rewards accounts - our TSA pre-check isn't on there. So we have to go through and take all our stuff out and off our shoes. Etc. Oh - and our trip had 2 flights but now has 3 and we arrive at 9pm instead of 12:30 noon. I'm absolutely done with them. We lost an entire day of vacation when other flights were available and we had to fight and argue and escalate just to get what we got. Rebooking on their app was an absolute joke. No thanks. Even if Delta is considerably more - it's worth it. Garbage. read more

After they rebooked my flight when I was supposed to be flying for 8 and 1/2 hours from Virginia to Boise Idaho they are sending me up to Washington DC for 13 hour layover plus I paid for aisle tickets and half of mine are not. They won't put me up for the night even though it's 13 hours and they blamed it on the weather. I said I've been watching the radar there's nothing going on what weather are you talking about? What a beautiful experience flying in the plane of American Airlines.The Captains (each flight) allowed us to get in the cockpit and let my granddaughter sit in their seat to explore the flight instruments. The flight attendants (Jeanetta) were great on the flight from CLT to LAX, LAX to CLT. (We saw Jeanetta on the round trip going & coming back from LAX, she provided 1st Class service) of course the Norfolk flights were also great. My number one choice for Airlines is American! The food was delicious, plentiful and healthy choices were available for vegetarians. read more

Everyone seemed ignored they had to be there. American Airlines needs to offer refunds or partial refund if your services were unable to be met or completed. AA has been completely hit or miss for me. Sometimes I have a wonderful experience and other times it is really not good. For the most part the flight attendants have been friendly and helpful, but it is a far cry from the kind of service you used to receive on a flight. I know COVID affects many of the in-flight rules now, but the professional standard seems to have been lowered. I will continue to use American, but it would be nice if some of the old standards were put back in to place. My last flight the seats were falling apart and the second leg my chair didn't work properly so with any incline the chair started leaning backward. read more

Not horrible. Granted I come from Seattle land of the 2+ hour wait time through security if you don't have first class, an employee badge or TSA pre check -___- so almost any airport is better. Aside from DC or San Antonio since some crack pot thought it was a good idea to NOT connect the gates so on connecting flight you have to go out and back through security, frakin wack jobs making me run from one flight to the next cause they are too lazy to knock down a damn wall -____- . *Rant done* Very clean airport, though it says INTL it's very small and only really 2 terminals I think, but the INTL Comes from the Norfolk Navy base and all the military come through there. Which there was a lot flying out on the Sunday I was there. Not many options for food so eat before you arrive. read more

Been awhile since I've updated my review. This flight was just a good as the last flight. Didn't get warm washcloths before they served breakfast but that's alright. Breakfast was pretty good. They also gave us cinnamon rolls which smelled and tasted so yummy! Flight attendants were friendly and attentive. Almost got delayed several times due to the weather but pilot kept everyone informed and we were only behind schedule about 30 minutes. Overall experience was great. read more

Had two round trip tickets, non-stop to Miami for Thanksgiving week. Got a call a week before the flight out. Apparently they changed our return flight from non-stop to a layover in Charlotte. No offer of a voucher or compensation at all. We fly non-stop because of the convenience and pay a little more for it. Also during these covid times we doubled our risk by having to go through an additional airport. Been flying AA for years and always been happy. They really let me down this time. read more

American Airlines is the worse. They canceled my son's airline ticket while he was waiting to check in at the Hong Kong airport with no notification. As we scrambled to get our son on another flight. They miraculously found one seat on the very same flight for double what we paid and a wise seat. I wrote the airline with my complaint and the reply with we have a gift for you and to check my email. It was a $150 credit. What?? That was an insult. Let me say that if I could give zero stars I would!. We purchased tickets for a trip to the Dominican Republic early this year for a wedding we were invited to and once all the deaths and sicknesses going on out there we decided it was best to back out for safety reasons. We we call to cancel they said we would get a refund on both tickets only to find out they decided to not refund one of the tickets and give us a credit on one without advising us of the change of decision which is poor customer customer service and communication on their part,needless to say after a call to their customer service we had to speak with a supervisor because you're not going to tell us one thing then do another without any type of communication. We finally get it resolved and they say it takes 7-10 business days for a refund in which they hit the card immediately after the tickets are booked,go figure!!..needless to say I wouldn't recommend flying with American Airlines. read more
