SWA in Columbus is pretty sweet. It's usually pretty easy to check in and get through security. They have a clear lane in the terminal. And it has a Vino Volo AND a Donatos Pizza. There are only a few gates here so it's rarely super crowded at any of the establishments. And the SWA Staff is always helpful and friendly. Boarding has changed in 2026 and the different groups are clearly marked on the screens in the boarding area. Preboards and Priority go before Group 1 so don't get too bent out of shape if you're first in line in Group 1. read more

Southwest has always been a great airline to people are funny. The pilots are funny. Everybody is super super friendly and the airline usually runs smoothly. Unfortunately with the changes they've made and are continuing to make. I don't know if Southwest is any different from other airline. You were able to check two bags for free; now you got to pay. Even though it's a little less than Delta, American, etc., you're still paying for your bags. And beginning, I think next week or next month, there's no lining up to board according to sections, A 1-5, B 6-10. etc. That's right, the airline's going to start assigning seats. I had very good experiences on my 4 southwest flights to and from Kansas City, MO from Columbus Ohio! All of the planes were clean and none were over booked so there were plenty of seats to choose from. Tip, go toward the back of plane if need extra space. Every time I was able to have either a row to myself or one seat between us The flight attendants were friendly and I enjoyed the perk of free beverages and snacks. Although they could offer a gluten free selection in the future. My seat mate enjoyed getting a extra snack from me. Take off and landing were perfectly done! read more

I hope I never have to fly this airline again! We had 8 gate changes, as many time changes, each gate change being from 1 end of the terminal to the other. Airline employees were downright rude & obviously unhelpful. 1 time when asked why the delay, I was told it was because there was another airplane unexpectedly in their terminal! Really? For a VERY short time (possibly less than a year...?) Southwest offered flights out of Dayton, and I was a very happy frequent flyer. Those days are sadly gone, and now CMH is my closest, most economical choice, ESP. when the stars and planets align and I can get a convenient (non-stop), reasonable rate flight to my nearest "home" airport, Islip (ISP) on Southwest. When Southwest is good, they're GREAT!!! When they have problems, well........ You've read the news, they (along with other airlines) have had their "issues," especially during the last few holiday seasons. Still, when bad weather or overbooking/holiday crowds hit, just about every airline will have the same challenges. In my experience, I see SW doing more to make things "right" when issues arise. I also GREATLY appreciate their two checked bags fly free policy. What I'm NOT a fan of (though it's the nature of the game, I guess...) is how now you've got to pay extra to get at the front of their "A" lines, and how they're lately trying to "nickel and dime" you for a lot more "basics" than they used to. I'll keep flying with them, as long as their pricing and flight availabilities are on par with other airlines. On the way to Florida we had a very uptight attendant with an indiscernible accent who gave us the flight instructions. I felt like a first grader on the first day of parochial school and the nun was telling us the deal. My husband agreed it was somewhat condescending . I booked my hotel and flight through Southwest Vacations and also signed up for the free rewards program so it's a much cheaoer option that others. Other flights may be technically cheaper, but they find other ways to charge you. Other flights have really weird days or times they fly so planning is too complex (Allegiant really only flys Mondays and Fridays) yet our Southwest flights was at 9:55am Sunday and 3:25pm Saturday so much easier to work with. 2 checked bags, a carry on, and a small personal item made traveling much easier so my cot flew free and the Disney helmets went as carry-on without issue. Other flights charge about $40 per bag whether carry on or checked so that cost hurts. Flight had about average leg room so not terrible. No first class available. Group A, then B, and finally C board. As normal people not paying extra to board early and no small children meant we were in group C. This meant we got whatever seats were left and split up our group. Luckily none of us had an issue with that, but fair warning. They serve a random snack in flight as well as a non alcoholic beverage both included in the price. Their flight staff was friendly with no issues. Will fly with them again. read more

I just wanted to say that Valerie Cox in customer service was very helpful to me. I had a total knee replacement and I had to have flights with time in between to walk and at smaller airports. She was able to search through the flights and help me find what I needed. My doctor wanted me to be able to walk around between flights to prevent a clot. She found the smaller airports with plenty of time in between. She was very sweet and nice. read more

I have all positive experiences with Southwest Airlines. I absolutely love this company's flight crew. There lightheartedness and ease of personality is a breath of fresh air. Sarcasm is in the job description, so be prepared to chuckle as they introduce the flight, go over the rules and regulations, all the way to landing. Oh, and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE that the seats are NOT assigned. You have a much better chance sitting next to your travel partner (or NOT sitting next to them, should there be some discord between the two of you, and you need a little space; whichever option floats your boat!). The biggest knit-pick for me is the price. I get emails all the time about $59-$69/one-way, but have never been one of what seems only a select few to obtain that gold-star price. Yes, I know this is a marketing ploy, there's only a few select seats for a specific route, and I totally understand how the travel-cookies crumble, but sometimes I just wish those fares would be a bit more obtainable for Columbus, OH departures. read more

Love southwest because they are convenient to our home and our airport offers most locations (non stop) thru Southwest. The staff is nice and check in is always fast and convenient and the ONLY reason we did NOT give a 5 star rating is because of the ONE and ONLY issue we have ever had. We were flying out of Columbus on the first fight out on a Saturday morning and we went to check in and with Southwest they ALWAYS allow me an extra seat because of my size. This is one of the main reasons we fly southwest if because they cater to me and offer this service at no charge. I had taken 20-30 flights previously and with EVRRY flight I had taken I had gotten the extra seat until this morning when we went thru the check in process and everything was fine and when I got to the gate the SUPERVISOR at the gate told me "were not gonna be able to accommodate that request now". (Just to clarify this was the SAME supervisor that was at the ticket counter when I checked in and she was aware that the agent was giving me the extra seat then because they had to call and get a supervisor to authorize this at Southwest corporate offices) I explained that I have ALWAYS had this option when flying Southwest and she got enraged and told me several times "we don't care if they gave this to you at the ticket counter, we here at the gate are taking it away at this point!" I again said I ALWAYS GET THIS and she said "your not fat enough to need 2 seats " and again I said "I always get a second seat and we JUST flew the same flight on southwest two weeks ago and I got it then!" And I swear the lady said " well your Butt must have shrunk since then!" My wife was in tears and called southwest when we landed and I will say they DID apologize over and over again, but really? "My butt must have shrunk?" Really ! But again, other than this I have NEVER had a bad experience with this airline! If it would let me I would give them no stars. My wife is scheduled to fly on SW at 6 in the morning. Two days ago she got a text that the flight would be crowded and she could change her flight at no charge. She did not want to do this and did not respond. Yesterday she got a text that her flight had been changed from 7 in the morning to a flight after 8 at night. That didnt work and she was permitted to change her flight to a flight at 6 am. The flight she originally booked was not cancelled they just overbooked it and kicked her off. Now at 10 pm ( 8 hrs before her flight ) she got a text message her new flight is cancelled. We have been on hold for an hour now and the recorded message says the wait time is over 120 mins. Looking on their website there are several flights tomorrow but all are full. So it looks like we are going to be on hold for over 2 hrs ( until after midnight ) and she still wont be able to fly tomorrow. I understand things happen out of the airlines control, but this is not the case. There is high demand and they overbooked her flight out of greed, taking my wifes seat away that has been paid for some time ago. I would rather walk to Utah than fly with SW airlines. They clearly dont care about anyone but themselves. read more

I'm normally a big fan of Southwest Airlines and when I have a choice of airlines, I always fly Southwest. Generally I would have given them a 4-star or maybe even a 5-star rating but our experience with Southwest this week warrants a maximum of 3 stars and even that is being kind. My son was scheduled to fly out of Columbus at 7:30 PM. Through no fault of the airline, the flight was delayed due to weather in Orlando. The folks at the check-in counter told him of the delay (estimated at 1 hour at the time). The flight eventually left about 2 hours late. Again - no fault of Southwest Airlines. The issue was that the arrival/departure boards in the airport were never updated and Southwest.com kept sending email alerts that told him his flight was on-time & that his flight was boarding (even when there was no plane at the gate). At one point, he called Southwest's customer service number and they told him that the flight was on-time and would be boarding in 10-15 minutes. The ONLY ONES who seemed to know what was going on were the gate agents. Other than the people on the ground in Columbus - NO ONE at Southwest seemed to know that the flight was delayed 2 hours. When he did eventually depart around 9:30, the departures board in the airport still showed an on-time departure of 7:30. Interesting enough, the incoming flight from Orlando (which had the same flight number as the departing flight to Denver) was accurately reported on the arrivals board. Really disappointed with Southwest's communications on this one. read more

POOPED ON!!!! Literally! SOUTHWEST Flight number #3332 from Las Vegas to Maui on August 31, 2023. By a fellow passenger and Southwest refuses to pay for our damaged personal items. I am reaching out through social media and the Internet to let people know about the situation. After many phone calls to Southwest corporate offices, they are still refusing to pay for the items that we've had to throw away. It all started when at the very beginning of our flight, we noticed a very bad smell coming from the woman in front of us. We thought that she was just having bad gas, but it smelled so bad the entire flight! When it was time to start getting ready to land, I reached under to get my belongings under her seat, and when I pulled them out and onto my lap, noticed that there was poop all over my things which by then had also got onto my arms and legs! I immediately got up and went to the front of the plane to speak with a steward and stewardess. They were shocked at what had happened and were so nice. In fact, the steward got into his own personal duffel bag, and gave me clothes to change into. I had to change in the front of the plane behind the steward, stewardess and my husband. Then quickly sit back down in another seat before we landed. After landing, we had to wait around for a very long time. We had to stand around the gate to talk to airport police and EMT. After a very long time EMT took her off the plane. She was completely soiled in her own feces, it was very sad. She had obviously just been released from the hospital because she had some kind of port in her hand and bandages. She had not gotten up once the entire flight, and had continued to soil her self through the whole flight, and we had to sit behind and smell it the whole flight, and then deal with it getting on myself and our things. We were told by a SOUTHWEST employee that they had to unbolt and throw away the seats in that row she was sitting in! I have reached out many times to Southwest trying to get them to replace the items that I had to throw away. However, over and over they refused to be responsible for my damaged items. I tried to reason that since they threw their seats away and replaced them, then they should do the same for my things, but they refused. We have also had to get hepatitis testing due to the fact that her feces got onto my skin and I would like them to pay for that testing as well. Southwest says that they are not responsible for our damaged items. However, they are responsible for the actions of their passengers! Since Southwest will not contact me further regarding the situation, I feel the only thing left to do is to reach out to the Internet and social media, and let everyone know of this terrible situation. Flight 1252 is late leaving Chicago so departure from Columbus is delayed until after 11am. It is instances like this when 500-1000 rapid rewards points awarded to members for inconvenience would go a long way in providing exceptional customer service. Otherwise, travelers are left unappreciated as a Southwest customer. A fellow traveler sitting next to me agreed that this is a good idea. Many times corporate executives forget that they are consumers too. If Southwest Airlines ever makes it a point that every employee is to treat customers as they would want to be treated, it would tremendously improve their business. We live in a world where most businesses' employees have a bare minimum (mediocre) work ethic. The friendliest and most helpful Southwest employee today is the young man who assisted me with acquiring my preboard pass. Southwest knows how to run an airline. That hasn't always been true. Years ago when they had only 4 planes, they had to sell one to stay in business. Here at CMH, the SW terminal is really close to the front doors, and they make it easy to get a boarding pass, get on the plane, and sometimes be entertained. This time my travel department took care of me and sent me back to Vegas via Southwest aka direct flight. Automatic 4 stars to Southwest for zero layovers. Early or midweek flights to Las Vegas are normally halfway empty flights and today's was no different. So my trip back to Vegas was an easy one. Some people dislike Southwest. I'm not one of those people. I think the flights are cheaper, seating more spacious, and staff just as friendly. I also enjoy my perks like free flights from time to time, free wifi, and A seating. My only issue with this specific Southwest is their departure gates at the Columbus International Airport. Right now, SW is going through a remodel at all their A Gates. This means that right now, you're having to deal with dust, less room, minimal eats, and almost zero seating. I fly a LOT, and have for 20+ years. Southwest is a very good airline. Their fleet now is mostly new. With the Airtran acquisition, it's newer still. Their boarding process is the best in the industry. Delta, are you listening? By issuing a boarding number, the crowd self-aligns, and everyone is happy about it! No more cutting in line, no more huge mob clogging the concourse/gate area! Once onboard, it's easier to find room to put my bag because they check bags for free. This means lots more travelers have less to carry on in the first place. The business travelers like me, who never check a bag, find more space left for us. Southwest also is smart to take drink orders on the ground, while people are still settling in. This speeds things up once in the air. Very smart. I'm not sure I love the "take any seat" bit, though. I'm 6'2" and I do like an aisle seat. Sometimes, even if I board in the A group, all the aisles are taken, do to continuing passengers, who get first dibs on their continuing flight. read more

As a new transplant to Columbus, Ohio, I found the need to return back to Illinois for a get together with some friends last week. After searching the many carriers that offer service between Columbus and Chicago, I settled on Southwest. I loved the fact that they have a reasonable rate if I book far enough in advance. It was not uncommon to see some of the other carriers pushing $300 fares for a Sunday flight. I also was able to check my bag without an additional fee. The check-in and boarding pass was easy to obtain and the counter staff was friendly at both Columbus and Midway....each time addressing me as Mister....made me feel just tad bit like a VIP. If I had only thrown in a cup of Starbucks and been wearing dress shirt and tie, I would of been a royal celebrity. My only complaint on the boarding process was that I did not like feeling like I was being herded onto the plane like cattle. My flight to Chicago was uneventful and comfortable. The onboard magazine had interesting articles about different places I may want to visit in the future. Working in air medical transportation and doing some research while in flight, the crew took some extra time and talked a little shop with me. The only complaint on my way back was due to weather, the flight was a little bumpy making for an upset stomach. I will continue to use Southwest as one of my preferred travel needs. read more

Literally the best airline that exists if you just simply want to pay the cheapest fare and fly to where ever you need to go throughout the US. I have to say that the employees working for Southwest are some of the friendliest people to have serving you, and if you're fortunate, they can even be comedic at times. One of the biggest perks is being able to check-in up to two bags for FREE. I don't understand why other airlines find a need to charge bags that customers need to check-in. It's definitely a greedy gesture to do so.
