Delayed 3 times in a row! I understand delays sometimes happen for weather or other issues but the last 3 times I flew, it was American and all 3 times, the flight was delayed over 2 hours each. One of the flights was 3 hours delayed causing me to miss my connecting and had to stay overnight . American tried to fight me on providing lodging but eventually agreed. There is never an explanation why the flight was so late - just we were behind - sorry ! Moving forward I will never choose American again . I'l pay more if necessary, because saving a few dollars is not worth my entire plans being destroyed. Let me know of you figure out your issues American. Maybe I'll give you another shot. read more

I used to be very loyal to America West Airlines out of Phoenix with a hub at one time in Columbus. Then, it was US Airways flying across country, again from Phoenix, and I was getting upgraded regularly. Now, it's American Airlines that I frequent along with past America West Airlines and US Airways patrons. I find that similar to any other airline, customer service is often better than not, but there are always those few hiccups. With American Airlines, you can get someone on the phone, on a chat, on social media, or in person to assist, and with some respect on our part, we can often get what we need. I rarely have luggage issues though there was one time where my bag was broken, and American Airlines gave me a replacement bag while they had my original bag repaired. I find myself regularly flying in and out of the American Airlines gates at Phoenix Sky Harbor and frequenting hubs like Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago O'Hare, Philadelphia, and Charlotte. Every now and then, I even make it back to Columbus, as I did last week for a conference. Often, my travels require a layover, and my flights are more often than not on time and without delays on departing or arriving. With status, an American Airlines credit card, and membership in CLEAR and Global Entry, I do not pay for luggage, I receive priority luggage handling, I board early, I speed through security, I sometimes receive upgrades, and I access lounges. Traveling has become more of a hobby and habit at the same time, and using American Airlines as my regular go-to airlines, I accumulate miles quickly while also receiving status and Loyalty Point rewards. I have two travel premium credit cards: the AAdvantage Executive Mastercard offering complimentary Admirals Club access and the American Express Platinum card offering other lounge access along with travel credits along with complimentary CLEAR and Global Entry membership. In Columbus, I was able to enjoy access through my AMEX Platinum to the Escape Lounge. Through T-Mobile, I receive free WiFi on American Airline flights. Through my American Airlines AAdvantage status, I get upgrades or free paid snacks and drinks on flights along with other benefits. To retain status each year, you need to earn Loyalty Point through flying, credit card spending, and promotions. You also can earn Loyalty point rewards after hitting 175,000 points, 250,000 points, and so on. While it is difficult to receive upgrades due to so many people at the Executive Platinum status tier, the benefits I do receive is worthwhile. I also have experienced technical issues on flights but not enough to cause me to abandon American Airlines, especially when every other airline has these same challenges. All in all, American Airlines is a great company and does as well if not better than any of the other major airlines. read more

Terrible out of 4 flights only 1 was on time. All other flights were delayed for hours. One was a part issue other one was no one on the crew showed up what is going on with all of the airlines. After a terrible experience with United Airlines check-in counter, we rebooked our travel via Cathay Pacific, which connected through American Airlines out of CMH on 01/09/2025 and the difference was night and day. Michael at the CMH check-in counter was outstanding, efficient, professional, and genuinely helpful. Check-in took less than 10 minutes, possibly even less. Later, when I realized I had forgotten to provide our KTN information, we returned to the counter, and Michael promptly corrected it without any hassle. His attentiveness and professionalism made the entire process seamless. For international flights out of CMH, I will definitely choose American Airlines moving forward. They seem to have a much better understanding of U.S. travel policies and international travel requirements, ensuring a smooth and stress-free experience. Thank you, Michael!:) read more

30 minute baggage claim after making us check a backpack due to no space and 35 minutes to deplane

We were supposed to fly to Juneau to go on a cruise. This airline cost us the trip! We were diverted to OKC after leaving Wichita Ks due to a storm. We initially were told it would be a 30 minute weather delay due to the storm in Dallas. It ended up being a 3 HOUR DELAY, SITTING ON THE TARMAC. The pilot came on the PA at one point offered for anyone who wanted to leave the plane, could but no luggage would be offloaded. He also claimed they were waiting on "paperwork ". At any rate the delay caused us to miss any connecting flight that would get us to our ship on time to board. We were stranded in DFW with no way to get to Juneau on time. We were forced to rent a car due to these circumstances just to get home. After many hours of phone calls American refuses to reimburse us for the substantial car rental. Our luggage was MIA as well it was many additional phone calls before we were able to find it...NEVER AGAIN WILL I USE THIS AIRLINE. read more

I flew from Columbus to DC this summer on American and it was fine. I'm a pretty laid back flier. I did not check a bag during this trip as it was only for a few days. I found boarding to be relatively efficient (they have like 9 boarding groups) which broke the process up a bit and while it might have been the individuals on this flight, there was less clumping up around the jetway than I have seen in the past. No real complaints on this trip. This particular flight is so short that as soon as the beverage service is over, they come around to collect trash, so you might be better off bringing your own snacks/drinks. read more

Had a series of bad experiences with gate people, the latest in Charlotte where I was ignored and then very curtly told what to do to gate check my bag because the overheads were full, even though I did exactly what they asked me to do, still got treated really rudely. What made it worse is when I got to my seat the overhead above my seat and across the aisle had overhead space. American Airlines appears to no longer have flight attendants or stewardesses. My thought is they just put security uniforms on them and carry belly clubs. Maybe it's true with all airlines. I was just appalled by the way we were treated. Afraid of getting kicked off the flight I just smoked and accepted the rude and abusive tones in the voices. I can see this happening during Ovid but it's over and there still acting crazy. All airlines probably need ti do a retaining and bring back stewardship. I've been a loyal AA customer for years and have been able to maintain elite status which unlocks some perks. These can definitely make the difference (no checked bag fees, etc), and they've kept me coming back to AA. Honestly, though, AA is really no different from the other "legacy" US carriers (UA, DL, AA). Sure, you'll find some differences in service levels or routes or frequent flier programs. But basically they all are similar. On AA you won't be nickeled and dimed for absolutely everything (ala Spirit), and they actually have a fairly decent inflight entertainment system ranging from movies you can view for free on your tablet or phone inflight or integrated in-seat video on their long haul fleet or select narrow body jets. They have a great worldwide route network (you can't get to Asia on Southwest) and many airline partners. Their service is nothing like most foreign carriers, but they are very much in line with the other majors in the US. read more

AA normally sends me an email asking how our trip was, but curious they knew it was bad, so they didnt this time. This was our flight 2012 to LAX in late June. First - The positive. The counter lady Amanda (35-40ish blonde-sorry if i am way wrong!) was out in the queues, behind the counter, carrying bags, and helping kids, parents, wife and I- navigate the process. There were multiple families checking in and she was smiling and happy as she helped everyone despite their issue or needs. I specifically went to get her name so i could tell you. She was awesome and we want to thank her for helping. However, there was another person, I believe her name was Farina that was just the opposite. She stayed behind her terminal behind the counter, didn't smile, didn't greet us, and did nothing. She was yelling at people in a really negative tone, "put your bag on the scales down there now", 'put all your bags on the scales', etc. Never speaking hi, never smiling, then throwing people's luggage on the back belt like it was a bean bag. Never said 'have a good trip', never offered to help others, or the other counter people. It wasn't that crowded, but people were still waiting. She was just rude and too cool or too important to help anyone! As for the flight to LAX. Boarding gate and timing was fine. However, the plane was disgusting and the crew definitely needed some serious retraining. They sat in the back most of the flight chatting and did minimal for the passengers. They didn't smile, talk to people, and appeared put off that we were there. Compared to our other connections and legs, this was the bottom of the barrel. And there wasn't a nice one there - all were rude. This particular flight-plane was honestly disgusting. Dirty, trash everywhere, broken seats, and stains everywhere. I honestly think this plane just got pulled out of storage with no one looking at it before releasing it. Needless to say I fly American all the time and it is hit and miss. AA should take this group to Maui/Texas and show them what customer service really is. The crew and people in Maui know how to treat your customers with respect while still getting them through the process. I hope we don't get that crew again. Our remaining legs with American were fine, but all agreed that this one was particularly poor for a major US airline. read more

Awful experience flying with AA in the summer of 2019. My friend and I bought tickets to Paris from the United States-- AA left behind my friend's power wheelchair, which she relies on for her mobility, in the U.S. When AA finally shipped it to Paris, it arrived damaged and would not move. It took AA almost a week to find my friend a replacement wheelchair so that she could safely leave her hotel room. This wheelchair, however, was not fitted to my friend and caused persistent back pain during and after extended use. It took AA three weeks to finally repair my friend's wheelchair so that she could spend about a week using it before having to return to the U.S. On top of all of this, communication with customer service was disjointed and confusing-- we found ourselves constantly having to re-explain the situation to whichever representative we were able to get onto the phone. In my opinion, this ordeal could have been handled much more professionally and effectively than it was. I have not flown AA since this experience and do not recommend AA to anyone who is seeking air travel, as I believe their handling of the situation to be appalling read more

I am so disappointed in American Airline and Priceline. They just stole $484.24 from my husband, my father, my brother and our good friend. A total of $1936.96 that is just gone. Not to mention the $1,200 deposit that was lost because of the cancelled trip. Last year in April these four where scheduled to go on a Merriam turkey hunt in Wyoming. What would be, if successful, the first step in their grand slam (those who turkey hunt will know what this is). Unfortunately due to weather in Wyoming the flight and hunt was canceled. Fortunately the ranch that they scheduled the hunt with rescheduled them for this years turkey hunt without any hesitation. After multiple phone calls to Priceline, they referred us back to American Airlines. After multiple phone calls with American Airlines, they referred us back to Priceline. When attempting to reschedule the flights neither American Airlines or Priceline would allow us to reschedule because the new hunt date was a couple days past a year of the original flight date. Neither company would give us a refund, or credit a rescheduled flight. We also paid for the Priceline protection and that got us nothing because we are a couple days passed the year. As many of you know different hunting seasons have specific dates each year which we cannot change. It is not our fault that there are season dates and weather that we can not dictate or change. If we could control the weather then every day would be turkey season. I am just truly disappointed and disgusted with this system. I know this happens all the time and would love to know where this money goes when people don't reschedule a flight in time. This is a lack of customer support and a terrible way to provide a service. Please share and put the word out. This has got to change. read more

For someone like me that travels 50k plus a year you have to take the good with the bad. Always remember it is not the counter person making all the rules. Today I have a 4 hour delay , coming out here an 8 hour delay. But the gate staff was excellent and did all they can do , they really tried to make it s easy for me as possible and adjusted my flights The travel on the airlines is usually good and I don't have any major problems. Only thing that kept this from 5 star is systems. AA must work to have their premium lines , line in my case the platinum be able to talk with the airports terminals better. Email I sent to American Airlines: I am highly upset with the way I was disrespected and belittled by a CSA at the gate Saturday morning Oct 21st. His name is Matt and he was working alongside a lady when I arrived at 5:16 am at the gate to board my flight leaving at 5:40 am to DC. I will rewind by stating I had a purse with me and 1 carry on, roughly 20 lbs bag. I first went to the front desk prior to tsa to get a printed boarding pass and I asked the csa at the front desk would I need to check my bag and she replied, "no" because it was a carry on size and would fit in the above compartments. I am a regular of Southwest and know that my bags are always free but I wanted to double check Americans policies since I do not frequently fly this airline. I went through the tsa and arrived at the gate when Matt said I need to pay $50 or else go back through tsa and have it checked for $25. I did not understand why there would be a fee when I asked the previous CSA. Matt said I either pay the $50 and catch this flight or I would have to miss the flight and go on the next 9 am flight. I said no that will not work because I had an 8 am business meeting right when I landed. I asked Matt if the fee may be able to be waived because I honestly was tight on funds until I landed. He rudely said no the fee will not be waived and that I should never fly without money. He said anyone that travels should have money and that I look like I'm going to the grocery store and at the register with food and no cash to pay it. I was highly livid, upset and in tears after hearing a representative of Your airlines say such evil, disrespectful, snarky words to me! The lady next to him that was also a csa heard everything and did not say a word! He continued to say rude comments and look me up and down in the most hateful manner. I paid the $50 and asked for a printed receipt. The lady next to Matt (I can not recall her name) said for me to keep my receipt and ask for a refund through customer service. She said my ticket was basic economy and that the baggage policy recently changed for basic economy tickets. because I really needed to board this flight and meet my recruiter. I have the receipt. I boarded the flight and Matt followed me down the ramp all the way to the entrance of boarding the plane. He informed the flight attendant that my bag needed to be checked in and that I can not put it on the overhead compartments. She looked at me and him and said to us both that I did not need to check it in because this flight was not even half booked and that there was plenty of room. When I heard her say this I was very upset to see that I just paid $50 for nothing when I could have easily put it on the plane. Matt then walked off and I explained the situation to the flight attendant of what just occurred. She said that was absurd and that I should not have had to pay. She even said that Matt was rude in his tone of how he was speaking to me. She apologized on his behalf and said that I can sit in first class instead of my assigned seat which was in row 8c. I thanked her and right when I sat down Matt came back and got on the plane and asked why was I sitting in first class. He said that I had no business sitting in first class when I am a basic economy low paying passenger. I did not say a word because at this point I was boiling in anger. The flight attendant heard every word that he said and kindly told him that she said I sit in first class. He looked at me very frustrated and angry and walked off the plane. I have never experienced such hatred and the absolute worst customer service in my life. I do not understand how well equipped, trained professionals for an airline can verbally abuse passengers who are paying for safe travels to their destination. I would really appreciate an explanation, solution and for this to be discussed with Matt. No one should be faced with that time of rude demeanor. They replied back: Only providing a $50 e voucher for future use. Though I said I will never fly their airlines. The email was very generic template and did not address them specifically dealing with the CSA. The voucher will never be used and has been trashed. I will never fly this airline nor recommend this to anyone. Discrimination, hatred, whatever the root of as not dealt with and I will make sure I will make this known. American Airlines - The worst CSA! - Airlines Near Me - Columbus, Ohio

Over the years, I've flown mostly on Southwest and Delta, and after flying American Airlines, it made me realize how good those airlines are in comparison. I booked a flight to Miami, almost a year in advance, and I preselected all of our seats were our party of 5 could all sit together. A few days before my flight, American Airlines overbooked my flight, and they changed my flight. American Airlines broke up our party and scattered us throughout the plane. Not so much an issue with the adults, but they stuck my 5 year old daughter next to a complete stranger. Called American Airlines to request my daughter be moved in the seat next to me, and after going around and around with agents, I was told there was nothing they can do for me. Luckily, the attendant working the gate could help, but we had to get to the airport earlier to make sure we could get this fixed. Not idea when your flight gets moved to 6AM takeoff, changed from an afternoon flight, so we had to get to the airport around 4AM; awesome! Luckily my daughters seat could be removed, but then we ended up being delayed due to plane issues. Had to power the plane off entirely, had maintenance on board, and that was reassuring. Thankfully I didn't die, but I won't be flying AA again if there is a reasonable alternative to where I'm going. read more

They were so friendly and they helped my brother out for his first time flying. I'm so happy that they would allow him to be placed on standby and was able to jump on the first available flight that was available for him to partake in. The security and the TSA wasn't too bad but I am overly impressed with the overall attitude and aptitude of the customer service representative at the American Airlines desk. read more

I grew up flying AA because my dad put in just short of 40 years. I was proud of AA and always was a little defensive when I started hearing bad reviews. Well, I figure if a plane takes off and lands and the service folks don't slap me it's a 1 star. I gave this flight a 2 because the pilots and service folks were pleasant. Seat leg space poor and the baggage took an hour to find its way to the only carousel that was running. I'm afraid it's not the cost of fuel that makes me want to use another airline. Make the seats human sized and figure out how to get the bags in one piece to one place at the same time in a reasonable period of time. Don't ever fly with American. Super rude staff. I fly all the time and I've flown every airline. This is the worst.

This is not the best airline in the world by far, but it's not bad compared with other US carriers. It's a so called full service carrier meaning they don't nickel and dime you for absolutely everything (non alcoholic beverages in coach are complimentary and beer and wine are as well on most international routes, for example). They are now introducing basic economy fares in many markets, though, which don't even allow you a carry on in the overhead bin. My experience with AA is different than most passengers, though, having maintained an elite status for the past 8-9 years which unlocks a host of extra benefits like free checked bags, etc. Their service in first class is spotty though recent flights have impressed me. You won't get any meal service in domestic first unless your flight is about 900 miles or longer, though they are now doing a cold plated snack on flights between around 500-900 miles. This is awful when compared to international carriers though not that out of line with other US carriers. Their AAdvantage mileage program used to be excellent though they recently sadly followed other US carriers making it based mainly on how much you spend versus how many miles you actually fly. American and their partners can pretty much get you anywhere in the world you want to go, though. read more

I encountered many issues with them this trip, but this about sums it up: board the plane and my overhead bin has space, but all those #%@&$ people who feel the need to bring the kitchen sink onboard have not stowed them appropriately. The flight attendant is right beside me as I'm struggling to get my laptop case in, playing Tetris with the luggage. I look at her and say, "Can we make this work?" Today I just happened to look up my flight to Hawaii in January. Come to find out I had a flight from Ft Lauderdale to Dallas and one from Kona HI to LAX and nothing else. I called customer service and the first rep hung up on me. Then I call again and waited another 20 min on the phone. The second rep was very nice and tried her best to help. There were no flights that fit my timeline. I would have to leave a day early or stay overnight in Pheonix which would have been at my expense after already paying for first class. The rep also told me the changes in flights happened in late October early November. No one notified me so by the time I found out, all the flights were taken. Have to cancel my trip. I will never fly American. I would give half a star if I could. They changed this flight 3 times. Neither time was I notified. read more

I purchased a ticket for my mother to come to California to see her grandson graduate. I upgraded to first class online when it was time for check by paying $180. I thought this will be great, my mom would have more space and also dinner for her flight. Well here is the bad. My mother gets on the plane and was told they have 16 first class passengers and only 12 meals. They served 12 people meals and when the got to her said "You upgraded so you do not get a meal". This was very embarrassing for her, nowhere does it say online that people who upgrade may or may not get a meal. I contacted customer relations and was told that ticket fees are for transportation and meals are complementary. So you mean to tell me they pick and choose who gets meals??? I will never recommend or fly American Airlines what a horrible experience. Update- American Airlines does read their reviews and after a couple hoops, provided a partial voucher. My take away from this experience is bring food, just in case they run out because first class meals are a courtesy and not part of your ticket price. They will serve passengers that paid full ticket price first. This does not include customers that paid to upgrade. Paid upgrade is not considered a fully paid first class fare. This past week was my first time flying AA. It offered the best non-stop option from CMH to PHX for my first vacation in 2 years. That would have been great if it actually held true. My flight out was canceled. Just canceled. So ensued the rebooking gymnastics that got us out of CMH that night. To Charlotte, NC. Then an overnight stay in Charlotte followed by a longer flight to Phoenix. So right off the bat, we lost one day of vacation and the cost of our resort. I wanted to punt as soon as the flight was canceled, but my wife is more patient than me. On the way home today, our flight out of PHX was delayed in leaving. It did eventually leave, so we had the non-stop return flight to CMH. One other minor annoyance...my mask. I purchased a nice mask designed to function well with a single-strap design. It's great in that it doesn't steam up my glasses. And it is easy on/off for eating or fumbling with boarding passes through TSA, etc. I have 3 of them that I've used for the past 17 months. This was perfectly fine on the two flights out. On the way home, while waiting at the gate, I was eating breakfast. As we were called for boarding, the mask was on and covering my nose and mouth. As I'd yet to tighten the strap, there was a gap under my chin. The gate agent stopped me saying my mask was not sufficient as it had a gap. I said, no worries, just need to tighten the strap and it draws up close to my face without gaps (which I did on the spot). It provides more coverage than the paper mask the made me wear. Once on the plane, I put my own mask back on and checked with the flight attendant if it was okay. It was. Generally not a big inconvenience per se, just get your policies in sync. And don't be a jerk because what you saw and what was reality got your panties in a bunch despite your coworkers disagreeing with you. I've flown other domestic airlines during the pandemic and have not dealt with incompetent schedules and staff. AA needs to step up their game to not be in the same league with the budget lines like Spirit. read more
