I like ordering before entering the store, always have because the inside space is so small and usually overcrowded. However, Southside Shellfish is only offering curbside pickup which is cool too. The only issue is there is not a true order of how the curbside process works. It is a pull up frenzy without any real consideration to who is first, second, etc. This leads to frustration among the crowd. I called ahead, but had to wait over half an hour before I had to flag someone down to acknowledge that I had been there as long as I had while I watched car after car pull in and drive off. It was really annoying, but if I was not determined to get the boiled crabs as promised I probably would have not bothered to fight the pain. Although I have never had a bad experience at Southside Shellfish, it would probably be a minute of long consideration before I ever attempt to go through this ordeal once again. The service was slow. The store front said that due to Covld you needed to call your order in. They said it would take 15 minutes but it ended up being 40. The Talapia portion was small. They did include 6 fried shrimp that we ddn't order maybe for compensation? They neglected to include the order of cole slaw. We also ordered a Low country boil. The potatoes were cooked but still a little hard. I think they needed a few more minutes to cook. My wife thought the shrimp was hard to peel and maybe a little old. I'm really between 2 and 3 stars but it doesn't matter. There are so many better places in Savannah, I don't think we will return. read more

Lived in Savannah for 4 years, drove past it many many times and never made a stop until after I moved away. Their Crab Stew is too good!! $3 for a bowl its so good I get 2. There are many different options you can get your food. FYI Don't go close to closing time and think you are going to get certain steam items. They close on time and if that pushes them over they will not cook the item. lol gotta love it.. Everything is fresh and cooked to order. I'm surprised that this place has good reviews. Southside Shellfish used to be good but over the past year the customer service and quality of food has gone down. I'm posting this review so the owners can improve on what used to be a great takeout spot. Last time I ordered from Shellfish there was long black hair in my food. Yuck. Then another time I ordered, my grilled fish was overcooked. There would be times that I would call in my order and when I arrived 20 minutes later to pick up my food, they hadn't cooked it. Smh. That happened on a few occasions. It's always a long wait to receive food and since they never have my food ready when I get there, I just stopped going. read more

I had the fried whiting today from Shellfish. It was so very good, crispy and well seasoned. I've been going to this fish market for almost two years, as long as I've been in Savannah. They are great here. Fresh fish and seafood. On point with cleaning, filleting and whatever else you ask them to do with your fish. Excellent seafood salad. Good prices and they cater. I lived in Savannah for a few years and regret not eating here as often as I could have, although Savannah has some very delicious hidden gems found no where else in the world. My mom came down to visit and was pretty hungry. We're not particularly favorable to expensive food, but we love delicious food. I went and picked up a low country boil and it was LOVE AT FIRST BITE with her as it was with me. The first time I had their food, I was eating dinner at my friend's grandmother's house and I swore she made it homemade. That's how good the food is. Really friendly staff and clean facilities. Fish looks fresh too, though I've stuck with just the shellfish. So why only three stars? Because every order I've had has had something unpleasant or messed up about it. Missing hush puppies on an order of fried oysters, which was a bit pricey at 10 dollars for 8 pieces of smallish oysters and a handful of fries. A dead/spoiled crab (only realized after I bit into it...yuck!). Clams that smelled strongly of methane/sewage, which was noticeable in the flavor as well. And flavor-wise I'm not a fan either. The garlic sauce that seem ubiquitous on their pre-cooked items has a strange and unpleasant texture. Reminds me of spray butter. A crab pie that was under seasoned and tasted mostly of mayo. I'll be honest; I'm reluctant to go back, though maybe I'll give the fish and one of their delicious-looking desserts a try before coming to a definitive decision. Update: went back one more time and will never go back again. Pity, because the food was actually better this time...garlic shrimp out of this world...but the service was awful. In particular, I found the behavior of one particular employee to be disgraceful. Yes, it's a seafood market but no, you don't have to scream at your customers like a fishmonger's wife. This woman clearly cannot handle any sort of pressure. As soon as the market experienced a bit of business, she started screeching at the customers, which was totally unnecessary because none of us were being rude or complaining. What really turned my stomach is when she started in on this little old man who just wanted to ask her a question. She acted so ugly towards him while he was so quiet and nice. That just made me mad. Southside Shellfish is fin-flippin'-tastic! They have all sorts of seafood laid out in their ice-laden counter. You can order anything and have them package it up for you to cook at home or they can cook a lot of it for you. The low country boil is a popular menu item with good reason. You get potatoes, corn, shrimp, sausage, crab, and a ton of Old Bay all floating atop a layer of butter. All for only $7.50! The fried shrimp is also quite delicious and I've heard good things about their oysters and whole crab pie. Southside shellfish is definitely my go-to fish monger. The place is clean and efficient and orders come out steaming hot. Love it! read more

Do not order a slice of crab pie for almost $5.00 its totally not worth it. My analysis is that slices are cut and frozen until ordered. Perhaps that explains the stale freezer taste. read more

I went here a couple of days ago and couldn't believe how rude this older black guy behind the counter talking to a pregnant woman like she was stupid or something. And, on top of that, gave everyone in there a dirty look. Another customer came in missing her Shrimp and the girl behind the counter kept telling her that what she ordered didn't come with Shrimp. How clear is a meal order that says Fish & Shrimp with French fries, drink, and a side did the girl behind the counter not understand? Then, on top of that, I was hesitant because I ordered the same thing! When I got home, I opened my meal to find that I had 8 lil Shrimp, 1 fried fish, NO french fries, and a handful of napkins. Oh, and my side tasted like someone had just handled raw fish then grabbed some Cole slaw and put it in the to go box It was gross! We purchased a half bushel of "live" blue crabs several months ago. By the time we arrived home, shortly thereafter, one dozen were dead. A bad experience for a first visit. Two weeks ago, we gave them another try with oysters. We ordered a half bushel of singles. When we got home, almost all of the oysters were clusters and they put singles at the very top as if to cover the clusters. We're done with this place. read more

Their seafood is good, but the workers that was there tonight had very bad attitudes. The cashier and the man sweeping the floor in the back was very rude. I asked about the special that the sign outside clearly stated. I was told that they didn't do that special anymore, so I asked why was the sign still out. Complete RIPOFF.... They messed up my order yesterday and when I called, angry manager had clerk call me back once he realized they WERE WRONG... because at first he told me I was lying.... So I was told I would have a $9 credit the next time I returned... I just went there and if anyone can figure out this Math please reply to my post...!!! I asked for 1.5 lbs of P&D shrimp raw... it was $11.99/lb..... The very nice female clerk told angry manager that it was on her, that I was the one who's order was messed up yesterday.... I told him I was going to pay the difference since I knew it would be over $9.00....!!! The total weight was 1.54lbs.... He made me pay $12.63..!!!!!!!! So you are telling me that 1.54lbs of shrimp cost $21.63...?!?!?!?!? He whispered to her as he told me the total which was fishy in itself..... I will be sending this complaint higher, but everyone beware..!!! My order is usually messed up, not sure why I keep going back... but definitely will not again.... Incredibly affordable cooked-to-order seafood. The price on the low country boil has been raised to $8 - still an incredible deal, compared to prices at most casual sit-down restaurants. It was still fairly busy for 8:30pm on a weeknight and the staff was incredibly friendly, even when confronted with a very needy and loud customer ahead of us. The low country boil came loaded in a styrofoam plate covered in Old Bay and swimming in a ton of garlic butter. You get a whole steamed blue crab, probably around 12-16 decent size shrimp (21-25s?), lots of spicy sausage, 2 pieces of corn on the cob and a ton of boiled red potato wedges. ALL FOR $8!!! We also ordered the seafood combo that came with fried shrimp, oysters and scallops. While the oysters and scallops were perfectly seasoned and cooked, the shrimp were small (41-50?) and overcooked/rubbery (knocked my review down one star due to this). read more
