Highest Price, Lowest Quality: A 3.5-Year-Old Pool Falling Apart Like It's 15 I am writing this to warn any homeowner in North Texas considering Southernwind Pools. I made the mistake of choosing them because they were the highest-priced bid and had strong reviews. I assumed that a premium price tag guaranteed premium quality and professional oversight. I was wrong. In reality, I paid for a luxury product and received bottom-tier craftsmanship from what appear to be the cheapest possible subcontractors. The construction process during COVID was already no fun, which I am not even holding against them. What I am holding them accountable for is the systemic failure of the pool's structure since it was completed in September 2022. The "Infinite" Leak Cycle and Incompetent Service We have dealt with multiple pool leaks since the very beginning. Southernwind was so delayed and unresponsive regarding leak detection that I had to personally pay for three full leak detections out of my own pocket. Even when they finally "fix" a leak, it is a temporary Band-Aid. In late 2024, a leak reappeared in the exact same spot they had supposedly repaired just one year prior. We were losing half an inch of water every single day. As a gesture of good faith after John reached out to "solve" my issues last year, I even signed up for their pool service again. That was a mistake. I quickly found that the pool service was not actually cleaning the pool properly either. It was just another layer of high-priced, low-quality service from a company that clearly does not value its customers once the initial check clears. Substandard Masonry and Tile Failure The tile and grout work on this pool is a disgrace. The grout on the spa began cracking and deteriorating almost immediately. Grout should last for several years, yet mine didn't even last one. After I fought to get it regrouted, it failed again one year later. The tile work is even worse. It was clearly not done properly, without the necessary sealing or treatment required for a pool of this "caliber." In 2025, the tiles began rising and falling out. They were "fixed" by Southernwind, only to have the exact same failure happen again during the 2026 freeze. This time it is a disaster. My entire back panel wall is rising and failing. It is proof that the original installation was fundamentally flawed. Don't Fall for the "Management Fix" I previously wrote a negative review about these issues. The President, John, contacted me and promised to resolve everything if I took the review down. I trusted him and deleted it. That was a massive mistake. The "permanent fixes" they promised were just enough to get me to stay quiet for a few months. Now, in 2026, I am facing the exact same structural failures all over again. Do not let the "premium" branding fool you. Southernwind Pools charges luxury prices but delivers a product that falls apart in under four years. Our experience with Southernwind Pools, and especially Clay Wager, has been nothing short of exceptional. We recently completed a major backyard renovation in Dallas with a large pool, outdoor living area, and outdoor kitchen. Southernwind managed the project with the expertise you'd expect from a large, experienced company, but with the relationships you'd expect from a small, family-owned business. Our project designer, Clay Wager, did much more than design our project. He worked with us to create what we wanted and needed as a family. As first-time pool owners, he both listened and provided expert advice. Additionally, he was present for us throughout the entire project. When we noticed a chip in a tile, he was the one we called and quickly had it fixed under the outstanding warranty Southerwind provides. Any large construction project is going to have its glitches along the way, but I'm glad we had Clay to move the process along. Perhaps most importantly, we believe the project is now perfect. After using it for a summer, it was exactly what we wanted, and all our guests have been highly impressed with it. So, My wife and I have been waiting to begin the process of reviewing Southernwind Pools. It's been 4 years since we jumped in for the first time and the build process took 6 months. Let me start by saying that Moses, our designer on our project, was creative, helpful and patient in guiding us to a pool design decision. However, he did miss a few things that were not caught until middle of the build and a major one at the beginning of the build. His design mistakes were mitigated by our acceptance of minor design changes during the build that saved material and ultimately cost, which we ate. Toward the end of build and at walk-through we noticed both walls at each end of the pool were moving and falling away. causing large gaps between the pool shell walls and the deck wall itself. Needless to say, unsightly and poor build (poor subcontractors) or design. After much back and forth about what we were seeing, we hired a company (Swim Soil) through Southernwind to improve soil movement through an additive process (we paid this expense). As we were starting this process, we found out from Swim Soil and the project manager, at the time, that most other pools in our area built by Southernwind Pools have a soil additive before the build process to prevent some soil movement. They didn't offer it. To be fair, I asked our designer, Moses, if our property could do a pool of the design we were proposing. He and Southerwind said that they build pools all the time on lots similar to and more difficult than ours, and it would be no problem. That was after Moses did measurements and "land survey" to determine "eligibility". So, Swim Soil finished the additive process and Southernwind finished putting the deck back down and tried rebuilding the wall. The wall is falling again! I have talked to 2 foundation engineers and they say that the soil additive does a good job before construction. It's hit or miss afterwards. Plus, we have, in recent months, talked to several other pool companies and construction management companies. All of them were stunned to find that a simple pier system and better site grading weren't used during the build process. All said that the team at Southernwind at the time was very suspect at best. A comment I expect from competitors. But, in my experience, warranted to say. The reason we have waited to start reviewing is that sometimes these things tend to work themselves out. We have heard nothing from Southernwind or its owner who we have heard is now more involved with the business. They have come to fix a plumbing issue in the pool. But, they still haven't addressed the 2 major issues in our site. read more

The entire experience - from the initial consultation through the design process, to installation, communication throughout, managing our expectations regarding timeline, and weekly servicing and overall maintenance once complete - has been top-notch. Our decision to hire Southernwind Pools to build our fancy new cement pond can be best described in two words: Mike Calonne. In our opinion, Mike is, by a million miles, what separates Southernwind from other pool contractors. Mike wears two hats at Southernwind -- one in a sales context and the other as a pool designer -- and we were fortunate enough to engage his services in both capacities for our project. From the day we picked up the phone to the day we filled up our pool, Mike was nothing but professional, courteous, responsive and reliable. And from a creative standpoint, Mike's concept for our pool design blew the freaking doors off of what the other contractors brought to the table. The level of creativity he brought to our project far exceeded our expectations and was right in step with his knack for problem solving. At the end of the day, we were absolutely thrilled with Mike's vision. As for the construction process, things generally went according to plan, with a few hiccups along the way. About midway through the project, the project manager assigned to us took another job with a different company. This was actually fine with us, as he seemed somewhat disengaged from our project, but no one bothered to inform us of the lineup change until at least a week after his departure. The breakdown in communication probably ended up costing us a week or so of construction time. The only other real complaint we had about the process was the performance of Southernwind's landscaping subcontractor. These are the guys who handle irrigation and any pool-related landscaping installations (in our case, a flagstone deck and walkway). While they were always courteous and friendly, their level of skill and quality of workmanship didn't seem to be on par with the requirements of our project. Either that or they were in a rush to get the heck out of Dodge. Whatever the reason, we were less than impressed with them. But as we're all unfortunately too keenly aware, a subcontractor by any other name is still a subcontractor. Beyond that, the construction process went really smoothly... very few headaches or panic attacks. Bottom line, if you're thinking about pulling the trigger on a pool, we'd highly recommend Southernwind. When we first began the process, we were blown away by the dollar figures attached to building a pool, but after having gone through it, we have a real appreciation for the sheer scope of what goes into the process. It's a relatively massive undertaking, all things considered. We believe that the main thing Southernwind offers is value. Not only from a cost standpoint (and they were extremely competitive), but from a Big Picture standpoint. From start to finish, they are a well-oiled machine in every way. Building process was fine. But their after build customer service is deplorable. Takes weeks to get a response for a service request. They put in the wrong panel and equipment, which we are having to replace. They installed some type of peculiar chlorinator which NO ONE has ever seen before. We have to cap that off and install another one. They installed the pool then fled. No follow up. No point of contact for service issues. And the pool is only a year old. Our pool was leaking. It turns out it was the skimmers. These guys charged me $500 for a "leak search" which they say included sonar and such to find leaks. Then $1000 to fix the skimmer leaks. This seemed to reduce the problem for a short while, but then it got worse again. They came out and claimed "Skimmers tears perfect with no issues. You have to have another issue." (quoting from Mark Robinson's email). I told them there is no way that was the case and they came back out and then claimed that my pool had "settled" in the two months since and new cracks had appeared. We do not believe they did not properly fixed the pool the first time and their attitude after the fact was unhelpful. I would not do business with them again. read more

Never finished! Storm did damage during construction phase and they didn't cover the costs/run it through their insurance even though they admitted it was their responsibility. They tried to charge me $8,000 for repairs. Someone else did it for $5K. DO NOT USE! Low value, but think extremely highly of themselves. We are now 4 weeks into the build, and so far so good. SW is building us a 28,000 gallon pool that is 42 x 19 and a 720 gallon spa. In addition, we are having over 1,000 sf of extensive deck work, a large structure and steps. This is a very large project that was scheduled for 12 weeks. Photos of our build in process are on SW Facebook (matson). Our designer was Moses C. and in reality, he is the reason we chose SW to begin with. We may have been his most challenging customer, as we started from scratch 3 times when we just couldn't seem to get the exact plan. Sometimes you don't know what you want until you see it in 3D. He worked with us, LISTENED, and designed tirelessly until we got something we were completely happy with. We dealt with 2 other large pool builders in the process (won't give names), and the designs shown to us were good, but just didn't have the custom look. It was pretty obvious they were more interested in providing a cookie cutter design that their crew could build quickly. We signed the contract Thanksgiving week, and the dig started at the end of January. I must admit that the process of permitting and waiting on engineers due to the complexity of the build required patience, but we were more interested in getting it right than getting it done. I have no idea who the other complaining reviewers were, but they certainly don't describe our process at all. Someone even mentioned lawsuits, and after doing some legal checking, there is nothing out there. Even SW was bewildered with that review. But, each person should do their own homework as I did to feel good about it. I can just tell you our process has been very good, and we are actual new customers. At this point I can give you an update of how they have handled our process. Communication: 5 stars. Every step from signing the contract, to the stonework is communicated through Angela. If you even mention someone to any single person, they all see to know. They communicate with each other, and the customer. Quality: 5 stars so far. As you compare your quotes, look at the quality, thickness of materials, rebar, etc. There IS a difference, and we are seeing it transform in front of us. The owner John even had them tear out an entire retaining wall along the house because he didn't feel is was substantial enough once it was in. This was NO COST to me. You get what you pay for, and now that I have friends that complain about their new pools (leaks around lights, etc.), I am thankful. Louis, the stone mason team leader is meticulous. I saw him re-cut a 1" piece of tile 2X to get it just right. I can't comment yet on the decking and structure work, but will once it is complete. Contract: 3 Stars. Every pool company's contract I reviewed was awful, even SW. They all are written to benefit the PC and they all look the same. So, I was looking for a company that wasn't going to ding me for every issue, and so far SW has been spot on. They just seem to do what's right and aren't looking for a way to get extra money. We have changed our minds on several things along the way, and they have accommodated every change without a "change fee" so far. Even if they would have charged, I would have been OK. The fact of the matter is, building a pool is very stressful, and having people roaming around your property all hours of the day is tough. It is also so permanent that you want to make sure you get everything right. In addition, there are a ton of decisions you make along the process that require a company that isn't just about how many pools they can put in quickly. SW never tried to rush the sale or cut corners from what I have seen so far. John V, the owner is our on site contractor. It is pretty obvious he knows what he is doing. I will update this review when the build is complete. I am not easy to please, and have done more research on the internet than a healthy person should do. But you want to get it right. I won't remember spending an extra $3k a year from now, but I will be reminded daily if I picked the wrong company. I would feel very confident going with SW. My project with SP included a pool remodel, new hot tub addition, removal of existing patio cover, new outdoor kitchen w/ patio cover, new fence and new retaining wall. (roughly 110K project). My overall experience with Southernwind Pools was excellent. I actually signed an agreement with another company (pending financing) prior to finding SP and the experience after signing was downright abusive, so I canceled my intent to build and went on an exhaustive thorough hunt for a new provider combing through reviews on Yelp, Houzz, Google and FB. After narrowing it down to 5, I ultimately decided to go with SP for the following reasons: The design process, the owner answered my call on a Saturday (the main line forwarded to his cell phone) and they did what they said they would do in terms of getting back in touch with me after submitting an information form online. (It was astounding how many didn't ever get back to me even when communicating my budget.) The saying "must be present to win" rang true. After filling out the form and proving an extensive list of my expectations, within 10 minutes I received a call from Mark Robinson and we scheduled a consult the next week. When we met, Mark brought his designer with him (Mike Calonne). I explained my biggest concern was the design process. I explained that I wanted a provider who would work WITH me on my ideas, provide professional design services, consult with me on best practices and not rush me through a cookie cutter design process. I wanted a thoughtful designer who would accept feedback and be willing to iterate with me until the space was designed to maximize the available space and exhaust all considerations for placement of the outdoor kitchen and new hot tub. I also wanted one main point of contact to be involved from contract through the build process. I felt confident after the initial consult that SP could deliver on all that was important to me because I could see that Mark and Mike were working together as a team. They also gave me honest answers about my project, even if it was not what I wanted to hear. When I asked about their pricing, Mark immediately told me he was not the cheapest but that the work quality was very high and that they would not cut corners just to appear cheaper. I loved this response as I wanted a quality job above all else. I'm happy to report that the design process was exactly what I expected and Mike is fantastic about thinking outside the box to ensure the design delivers. He worked with my ideas and in the end offered a critical suggestion that made my vision become a reality which was something I would never have thought of on my own. I am truly grateful to him for going on a journey with me with zero ego or attitude! Very collaborative! Regarding the build process; all I can say is that Mark Robinson is a pro. He is extremely educated on the process and knows every single detail that goes into the build process. I found out later that it's because he actually started out building pools when he was a kid. His knowledge is extensive and he could answer any question I had in depth when trying to understanding the progression of the work. SP is VERY fortunate to have him. He is also the hardest working man I think I've ever met. He arrives on the job as early as 5AM, is in constant communication with you via text and phone until late at night and is an absolute pleasure to work with even through the rough spots. So what could have been better? I would say that I could have done a better job reviewing my contract to ensure everything that I expected was in WRITING. There were a few misses in terms of exceptions, but I have to own that as well as SP. Do not rely on "we discussed this", get it in writing so there are no breakdowns in communication. Nothing missed was earth shattering, but could have been avoided if I would have requested a walkthrough of the contract ON SITE. Go slow to go fast. Going through the agreement line by line and physically pointing to the things that the contract is referencing is clear is very important as SP will point to the contract as the source of truth; understandably. I would also suggest that as you get to "points of no return" in the work, that you take a pause with your Project Manager and do a double check of what is about to happen, the features you are expecting, and all of the possible upgrade / field changes that are available to you so it's not too late to get what you really wanted. Lastly, don't get behind on your decision making on tile, colors, plants, pots etc. Before you know it your decision will need to be made and if you are not ahead of the project plan, you will feel a lot of pressure to make decisions as the crews are scheduled and ready to execute. Lastly, I would recommend against having multiple contractors on a job this size, let SP do it all, it's worth it. read more

Our backyard was to take 10-12 weeks to complete. It took 6+ months and that was with my constant follow up. There's was tons of mistakes throughout the process. Weeks went by with no work done. They couldn't get their contracture out here to do the work. The owner is super cocky, will not fix anything. Makes empty promises and says my expectations are too high. We shouldn't have to pay $150k for our backyard to not get everything we paid for and be unsatisfied. The owner harassed me for weeks about making the final payment promising me he would fix things not done. It's been almost two months since I wrote the final check and he's not fixed anything. Not often do I write a review but this company's pool maintenance and service dept is a 5 Star and deserves a review. Don and his crew are exceptional, dependable and leaves very specific details of the activities performed each week. Hard copy left on site and an email generated summary sent to us. Don has always responded to my calls when an issue occurs. Just yesterday I had an issue with the heater not igniting. Don logged in remotely and had me do a series of tests. I started off by looking at several different companies and moved forward with 3 different designers. The initial process was very trying for me because I have little free time due to hectic work and family schedules. Ultimately, I chose to work with Mike Calonne at Southernwind because he went way above and beyond the rest: 1) he bent over backwards to accommodate my crazy schedule during the planning and construction phases, 2) listened to my needs and wants and produced a breathtaking design that will entertain my kids and my friends for many years to come, 3) made valuable recommendations to provide the energy efficient and low maintenance solutions I was seeking, and 4) educated me on some pitfalls I would want to avoid no matter who I chose to build my pool. Imagine my delight when the rest of the team was just as helpful, friendly, professional, and accommodating! They took care of absolutely everything and made sure my efforts on the project were minimal - just what I told them I needed. And, despite a very crazy rainy season last fall/winter, they finished on schedule! After moving from the Los Angeles in 2018 we made a decision that we wanted to build a pool. After interviewing a number of pool vendor and verifying references we chose Southernwind Pools. Mike Calonne our pool consultant was very patient and understanding as we began to design our pool. We initially started out with a simple rectangular pool that morphed into a free form design. Mike helped us and made recommendations through the process. We also decided to add a spa Using the pool design software Mike was able to show us a visual representation of what the pool was going to look like. We began the actual work in the fall of 2018. Southernwind Pools assigned a project manager that stayed on top of all phases of the project. The rain made the project a little challenging. However, after each phase Southernwind sent in their crew to clean-up the construction area. The pool came out exactly like the visual diagrams we viewed during the deign phase. We are about done finishing a pool that Southernwind built for us. The experience ha been excellent. Our designer Mike Calonne was fantastic, listened to us and then came back with an award winning design. At first we wanted an automatic pool cover, he was not aware of the company we wanted to use, so he the leg work on it, it was expensive so we went without, but I was impressed that even though we were not sure we could have he still did the work to find out how it worked etc. The building process itself was also very good and smooth, did take a little longer than I expected, but we did have some rain days. The communication between the owner John Versfelt, who is completely and totally involved in the buildout, and the costumer is excellent he even reached me while I was traveling abroad via text and phone. Anytime I had a question or a concern he was prompt to answer and explained things to us so that we would not worry and helped us understand the process. The few times when I felt something was done wrong I turned out to be the one that was wrong except once when they forgot an extra drain I wanted in the patio but this was also corrected right away. The end results is outstanding! Everybody that has seen our pool says it looks like a resort! About the only thing that I feel they could improve is the billing. The email that tells you when you have to give them the next check and the amount it has to be is sent the day before it is due. On the last payment the email was send at 7:00 pm, because I don't commonly check email after I get home I only saw it by chance at 9:00 pm. This led to my husband telling me I could just right a check just as he was going to bed, having more than one account I wrote it from a bank we don't use (it was laying in the kitchen table so I thought this must be what I should use) and the check of course was returned. Which is not a good surprise, not to mention embarrassing. Having said that, they were VERY GRACIOUS, did not complain or got upset, or made us feel bad and they just came over to pick a new check as soon as it was possible for them to do so. I understand that we do have an idea of when things are going to happen and this should not be a problem, but since work sometimes needs to be postponed because of weather, you are not always sure. I think they are excellent and now 2 of my husband's co-workers are thinking of using them on our recommendation. In my opinion they are the best in the business. The owner, John, is very involved, patient with a harried homeowner, very informative, and always available, even long after the project is completed. Beware of their lifetime warranties and lack of communication between depts. John, the owner, and his designer talked a great talk and designed a beautiful pool for us. I wanted a raised spa for additional seating. They built a raised spa higher than the pool, but flush with the patio, so no additional seating. I didn't catch this until after the pipes were set, so too late to correct properly. John offered a lifetime warranty on salt damage to stone coping. Within a year, we saw salt damage on our coping, specifically the flagstones that were most used where saltwater would sit on the flat part of the stone. John said it wasn't salt damage, but normal wear & tear on natural stone. Then I noticed water loss. At no extra charge, a diver repaired a leak in the drain and the in-floor check valve was replaced. Afterwards, I still noticed water loss. They said it was normal evaporation from wind and heat. I accepted that answer for a year until the water loss became very drastic in a 24-hr period. I finally realized that the spa was losing water. The service manager I was dealing with has now left the company. The new service manager, JP, said I needed a new fountain check valve. They offered a lifetime warranty on plumbing, but they don't consider check valves as part of plumbing. I asked JP how could he be sure that the problem was the fountain check valve before I paid for one. So he turned off the pool and closed all the valves. Water level still dropped drastically in the spa. Then he told me to turn my pool back on without telling me to open the valves, and my spa completely drained. Then he had the nerve to say that the valves weren't in that position when he left. No one ever touched the pool equipment after he left. JP sent another service tech out who said I needed a new in-floor check valve again. I asked how could he be sure before I paid for one, especially when JP said the fountain check valve was the problem. He just shook his head and said the problem was with the in-floor check valve. I was on a monthly service for pool cleanings and quarterly for filter cleanings. During the check-valve dispute, I asked for a discount on the pool heater cleaning. They offered a $25 discount since they would be out cleaning the filter anyway. However, they billed me for the full price and had no recollection of the offer. If I made up the offer, I would have given myself more than a $25 discount. After numerous frustrating calls with accounting & service because of the check valves and over-billing issues, they dropped me as a customer. I called three major pool companies around town who said check valves are part of their plumbing warranties. I paid $255 for one of them to come out and tell me that the valve on the spa drain wasn't closing all the way & just needed an adjustment. That fixed the water loss in the spa. With Southernwind, I would have paid for a fountain check valve and in-floor check valve for nothing. read more
