We didn't do the trail rides which I assume is where they get better reviews, but the cow cuddling experience was disappointing. There wasn't actually any place to "cuddle" the cows; you simply stand around and pet them. We got a small cup of pellets, and once those were gone, the cows had little interest in interacting with people. One cow had large horns and was much bigger than expected based on the photos and "mini cow" advertising. That cow specifically seemed pretty over the whole experience. The other two were much smaller, and they were all very cute. There was also no place to wash your hands, only wipes, which is understandable. However, when we asked where the trash can had been moved so we could throw the wipes away, one of the ranch hands responded with an attitude. The lady leading the experience was very kind though. While petting the cows was enjoyable, the experience felt worth closer to $20 than the $50 charged. That's the main reason for the low rating. Overall, I wouldn't recommend it. read more

Had a lot of fun horseback riding, celebrating my friend's birthday! We all signed waivers online and it didn't take long for us to get seated on the horses. We got instructions on how to command the horses to go forward, turn, and stop. I was a bit worried about my horse, Sunny, because he kept flicking his head around everywhere but for the most part, he stayed on the trail and I felt safe even when he went through the waters. Going through the trail took about an hour and it was so relaxing! The weather was also great. Not too hot but I recommend bringing a hat. read more

We went for an hour ride around the property. The staff was incredible and did a great job guiding everyone through the horses, even when people got scared or uncertain. Went there for a friend's birthday celebration. It was a 45-min horseback riding trail. They have clear instructions (get on, what to do, stop, turn) and it was my first time horseback riding. You get to experience the nature and ride a horse through the river stream. Definitely a perfect way to kick off the fall season! At the end, you may also feed the horses with some of their food. The staff is friendly and took great pictures of us. I love their waiting lounge couch. It was open air seating and comfy. Reasonable pricing of $95. Will return! read more

You can't live in Texas and not go horseback riding right? This trail is about 15 minutes outside of Austin. This location is fairly new so they don't have the proper directional signage. The lack of signage may lead you to believe that you're lost or going the wrong way but if you follow the route on the GPS, you'll eventually reach the destination. They also don't have an actual restroom however, the port o potty is actually clean. The cleanest I've ever seen! The parking lot is fairly small but I don't think they offer rides large enough to fill the lot. I did the hour trailride for $95. From the open grassland to the pond and cows along the trail. It's a very peaceful ride and allows you to become one with nature. I loved it! During the ride, the guide takes pictures of you however, it doesn't really benefit if you're at the back and most shots are from the front. Would probably help to have another guide at the end to capture moments for those in the back. While you have to sign a waiver as with most activities as such, it would be helpful to offer helmets to riders, especially if you are a new rider. Considering there are some uphill and downhill climbs, having a helmet would've put me more at ease. read more

I recently visited Austin for the first time, and while I'm not a horseback rider, I absolutely love seeing and petting horses and cows. When I saw an experience advertised as "Cuddle the Small Highland Cows" for $50 per person for 30 minutes, it sounded so fun and unique--I couldn't wait! Three of us went, full of excitement. But when we arrived, we were honestly very disappointed. There were literally only two cows, both standing under a tree near a small pond. While they were adorable and had sweet temperaments, there was no actual "experience" offered beyond just standing next to the cows. One of them was clearly overheated and laid down most of the time to try to stay cool, so we really only got to interact with one. There were no blankets offered to sit on like the cow had, no treats to feed them, no guidance or engagement from staff--nothing. For $150 total, the visit felt extremely underwhelming and overpriced for what we got. You'd honestly have a better experience just driving through the countryside and pulling over to see cows on your own. I wish I could leave better feedback as I really looked forward to this. read more

This is one of those experiences you don't realize you need to do until you do it! I did the trail in Manor/Austin, that went around a huge estate land. The horses are so well trained and make the ride fairly easy to do as someone who has never rode horses before. The day I went was with other couples so it makes for a great date activity, but I think it would be really fun to book as a group as well. Bachelorette/birthday crew anyone? We did the sunset ride so it was very peaceful and serene, and the best way to end the day. The service was very informative, they took the time to teach us what we needed to know for the ride, shared the horse's unique personality and even answered additional questions we had to ensure we were comfortable and prepared. They also provide sunblock if you plan on visiting during the hotter seasons :) Nothing but amazing things to say about our experience on the impressive 88 acres of land. I visited for my birthday and had such an awesome time. Our guide Jess was training two newer guides, so there were three super cool horse girls for two of us. It was a little rainy, and I expected them to cancel, but it cleared up and we were able to take the trail. The horses were really sweet and it seemed like they could take the little route in their sleep without us. I've never ridden and it was a nice first experience. They had a little waiting area that looks to be for larger groups, my group was only two and first of the day, so we just jumped right in. I liked that the ladies let me go pet the animals as soon as I got there. I think I would even have been happy just petting and talking to the horses for an hour if I got spooked of being so high up. The ride was about an hour, and we saw some cows, too! The guides offered to take pictures along the way and were chatty and fun to ride with. All around, had a good time. My only advice to those visiting is to be sure to use the restroom nearby before you arrive. There is a port-a-potty there to use, but no actual restroom as of now. read more

First, setting up the reservation was super easy and QUICK!! Misti contacted us via text almost immediately after I requested information and our res was set within a few minutes. Our guide was Elaine. She was personable and knowledgeable and made our ride that much enjoyable. It was the first time in 30 years that I'd been horseback and the first time either of my kids had been on anything but a pony led around a circle. Elaine taught us the basics of guiding our horse as well as letting us know about their personalities (I was in the back because Comanche likes to start things with the other horses, for example, lol!). We went into the hills and up and down, across what seemed like dried creek beds with plentybof awesome views! I will start off by saying booking it wasn't such a friendly experience. There were two occasions we had to reschedule because of a death in the family where we had to fly out of state and then our daughter had covid. The owner Misty didn't seem empathetic and even tho she rescheduled us for unforeseen circumstances, her text message reply wasn't very empathetic nor friendly. It kinda turned us off on coming but after paying $300+ for an hour horseback ride for 1 hour - it was kinda a must! As soon as we arrived, we will say the folks and instructors there were super friendly. We got checked in, signed our waivers and then off we go! The acre of land was beautiful and peaceful. The morning weather was perfect too. Our two instructors were pleasant and we enjoyed it as a family. There's also an old history grave site on the land they'll tell you about. Pretty cool! They took lots of pictures of us. I would say this is definitely a bucket list you should do for Fall with friends and/or family. We didn't realize it was only 10 min away from our house and there are many other places to horseback ride but I would suggest coming here. We tipped them for being awesome! read more

A friend and I went on a sunset trail ride today and had the best experience with Misti. Our horses, Rosy and Mississippi, were gentle, obedient and fun to ride. OMG! Today I had my first experience riding a horse and it was fabulous. I thought I would nervous but once I got on my horse, Mississippi, I became relaxed and excited. Honestly, the entire experience was top notch and I'm definitely going back again. Thank you Herma for bringing me here. Guys, the horses were very beautiful and the trail was fun to navigate. 0ur tour guide, Emma, shared several stories about the history of the property including those about the horses we were riding and those about the original property owners that help to find the City of Manor. At the end, we also had the opportunity to meet the owner of the farm and say goodbye to our horse. Many of the horses at Southern Trails have been rescued and saved from horrible conditions.
