I've been twice now, last July and again today. I just can't fathom a better trail riding experience. From the highly knowledgeable, skilled, and friendly guides (today we were with the lovely Ariel), to the gentle and very well trained horses, to the surroundings (550 secluded acres) that you won't believe are actually in Austin-- it's just a wonderful experience. Highly recommend the first in the AM ride to avoid some heat in the summer. I'm certainly a beginner, I think this was my 5th ride in my life but given how well the horses are prepared along with the teaching the guides provide, I felt very safe and was really able to enjoy the ride. Be sure to arrive 30min before the scheduled ride to sign waivers, get helmets, and a mini lesson. We will definitely be returning! Thank you!

Texas Trail Rides is located off the beaten path on Lone Star Ranch. From the moment we drove onto the ranch, we felt like we were transported into real "Texas." The horses and the staff made our evening ride such an enjoyable experience. The horses were well trained and were easy to ride even for beginners. The trail we rode on was quite scenic and one of my favorite parts of the ride was the creek that we rode through in the beginning of the ride. Our guide was friendly and informative about the horses and the ranch. I was impressed with the ranch and especially appreciated how all of the horses seemed to be well taken care of and were excited to go on the ride. The day we went was nearly 100 degrees so I was a bit concerned with the heat for the horses but our guide reassured me that the horses were used to this type of heat. I would recommend Texas Trail Rides for anyone interested in horse back riding in the Austin area.

I scheduled a summer day camp for two of my kids, and a Buckaroo class for my youngest who just turned 4. It took a couple tries to get through on the phones, but once I did, the staff were super friendly and helpful in getting us booked. I had questions about days and scheduling, and the owner Ms. Tina was able to get on the phone and make things happen for me. As the day of camp approached, they sent an email reminder and a while sheet of stuff to bring, to leave behind, and what to expect. The drive to the ranch from Circle C was pretty straightforward, though I did have to make a U-turn when I missed the turn into their driveway (it's was hard for me to see the numbers). Their new Lonestar Ranch is great. They've done a great job landscaping and maintaining it. Ms. Kara led a fabulous Buckaroo class. She went through the basics of brushing and cleaning a horse, and then led him on a 20-30ish min ride. So perfect! I'd highly recommend this for anyone with a toddler/youngster. My kids LOVED the horses, the counselors, and the entire camp. They're begging to return. Thanks Tina!

I did not want to leave this place! I haven't been riding in years and this place, the people, the horses (of course), were TOP notch. Madison was the BEST guide. Definitely coming back for rides, and hopefully lessons! Shoutout to Zorro. :)

My long-distance boyfriend from Western New York has never been on a horse before, and I had to make sure we didn't leave Texas one last time before getting him on a solid Texas Hill Country trail ride. Thankfully, Texas Trail Rides set it up for us when we were in a pinch! I called Texas Trail Rides at Lonestar Ranch around 8:30 this morning asking if they had any last minute rides that my long-distance boyfriend and I could jump in on before we flew back to his home in Western New York later this afternoon. Luckily, they had availability and got us on a trail ride at noon. They set you up with your horse based on your height, weight, and experience. Horses have personalities, as well, and some can get pretty stubborn, kind of like when we get hangry when we need to eat! Anyways, they set us up with our horses, taught the newbies how to steer a horse, and how to comfortably hold the reins while sitting in your saddle - and off we went!! We seriously got lucky because the weather was beautiful, the Texas wildflowers were all in bloom, and EVERYTHING was green. I was born and raised in Austin, so I didn't take it in until I noticed that the couple we rode with (they were from Virginia) were really ohhh-ing and ahhhh-ing over the scenery. After we came home and told my family how much fun we had, they all said they were very jealous and want to take my niece out for an outing once she is old enough to climb up on a horse! Hopefully, I can get my WNY boyfriend back out there again so he can feel more comfortable on the back of a horse. Plus, I think it would be awesome to see the rest of Lonestar Ranch and try out their skeet + trap shoot, axe throwing, archery, and definitely do some barrel racing!

We were supposed to just have a quick 45 minute trail ride, but since it rained so much the night before, the water in the creek rose and the trail was wet and muddy. Who would have thought instead of canceling on us or having us reschedule, the owner Tina went out of her way to give our bachelorette party the best time ever. She set us up in the arena and with her cowgirls and cowboys, we were given instructions on how to not only ride our horses, but round up some young cows and do some barrel racing (much slower motion on our end. Lol.) We also got to learn to rope a "steer" (a fake one of course). If it were real, I think it would have end up roping us. The girls had THE BEST time. The bachelorette even said this made her want to take up horseback riding if she could one day. She loved it so much. Well, hopefully we will be back. Thank you so much Tina and Co. for all your wonderful hospitality. We will not forget what an amazing time we had there. This was definitely the highlight of our bachelorette weekend.

So I am visiting Austin by myself for a few days and really wanted to go on a ride. I called them a few days in advance to make reservations. They had plenty of days and times available, so very flexible. I also got a confirmation email with all the do's and don'ts to prepare for the ride (long pants, closed shoes, some water, etc.). Today I went on a 1.5h trail ride at the new Lonestar Ranch location which is only 15 minutes from the center of Austin! It was super easy to find when you plug in the address into your gps and then look for their sign on the main road. All of the staff were very friendly and enthusiastic. I showed up in time, signed the waiver, got my helmet and was ready to go. I was the only person on the ride, along with my wonderful guide. The owner, Miss Tina was so nice, giving me her personal cutest cupcake named Batman. I loved him! Since this ranch is new, we went to explore some of the trails. Some spots are out in the sun but most of the time there are enough trees and branches to keep you shaded. The trails are narrow (but wide enough to maneuver around) so you do ride mostly in a single file. You cross the creek a few times, so your horse can grab a sip and you get a minute to breathe. It was a really relaxing nature experience and definitely a good break from all the Downtown Austin buzz.

Had such a wonderful time Missy was the sweetest Cowgirl ever. The horses Astro and Blaze were sweet, kind and gentle with the kids. We loved everything about our experience and hope to be back soon xoxoxo

Great outing in a gorgeous wooded setting with friendly & knowledgable guides. Spend about 90min around Onion Creek enjoying the springtime on old jeep roads and single track through the oaks. Would recommend to ATX locals and visitors alike.

We were so enthralled we didn't get pictures of the best parts. So beautiful!!

WE HAD THE BEST TIME!!! Ariel was our guide, she was brilliant, fun, patient and knowledgeable! We are experienced riders so we were offered some more challenging trails and the teenagers were having a blast! We all loved our horses... Lady, Chance and Ziggy! Well probably ask for the same horses and Definitely Ariel next time, and they're will be many more next times! Do yourself a favor and give this place your business. We were so happy to see the work they put into rescuing and rehabbing horses in need and very pleased by how well the horses were cared for! I can't say enough wonderful things!! Wonderful day with the just me and a couple teenagers having the time of their life!!

What a fabulous gem in southeast Austin! We went on a 45 min trail ride on horseback. The horses are well-trained and so very sweet. I rode Zorro. The trail was beautiful and peaceful. We enjoyed every minute with our trail guide, Shelby. The staff is very friendly and follow safety protocol to keep clients safe while having fun. They offer other services (such as archery, i believe) and host public and private events. We will definitely be back.

Very fun and enjoyable ride. Rachel our Wrangler was super cool and knowledgeable, could tell she knows the horses and their personalities. The trail goes back into a forrested area with a creek, very secluded and peaceful beautiful area. We came to find out they take in rescues from neglected animals there all about giving animals the best best quality and care. If we are ever back im Austin we'll be back for another ride.... Thanks again for a great time

Me and my daughter plan on visiting town this weekend, she is 5. I was hoping to take her on a trail ride and was wondering if she would be able to ride WITH ME on these tours?…

Hi Chloe! We are so excited to have y'all out to The Ranch! Our Trail Rides are for those 5 years and older. However, children at the age of 5 and 6 must be led on the trails by the trail guide. Unfortunately, we do not offer any tandem riding due… Read more

I think their age limit starts at 9. They are completely alone riding and have to control the horse. So 3 would be too young for this ride.

I'm no horse person, but I've known the new owner for close to 30 years, back when we worked together in Austin and before she fell in love with riding. I was in Austin for a law school reunion last weekend and just happened to be in town when she was finalizing the purchase, getting the keys, painting jumps, etc. I crashed their first "work day" and got a grand tour of the trails with the bluebonnets blooming everywhere. It is acreage and a stables worth rescuing, and it has now found its rescuers. I was so impressed with the spirit and dedication and sense of community of the group (horse and human!). Remember any old Yelp reviews from before 4/14/2014 apply to the old owner - everything is run differently now. I'm sure once it's up and running there will be lots of glowing reviews of the new ScissortailHill Equestrian.

Where should I start... ?…read more Ok the staff is friendly... That concludes the positive portion of my review. Untrained and temperamental thoroughbreds for beginners? Not a good idea... Especially considering that they all look severely underweight. My horse looked more suited for death than lessons - his skeleton was clearly visible. There are lots of retired race horses here. Run down facility, stable floor with a moon-like surface (great for breaking one's ankle). Even if you trust your horse's balance and your own, watch where you walk and wait 'til you're told to shovel urine-soaked feces out of the cratered mud stable floor... Even the owner can't find anything in the tack room. There's a 40,000-volt electric fence they will expect you to unhook (a live wire connected by a little plastic handle) with one hand while holding the lead rope of their ill-mannered horses with the other. They said it was imperative that once we got inside the fence with the horse, that we turn it back around before removing its lead rope so as not to get kicked in the face when the horse gallops away. My girlfriend's horse bolted at top speed the second it entered and she nearly fell into the fence while trying to let it go with the lead rope still on. They did, however, offer us a little twig to help keep the live wire loop in place when re-hooking the live wire door - very thoughtful. The owner is likely to try to up-sell you to a "double lesson" at twice the price so that she can teach you how to groom her horses for her for 100 minutes, leaving you with all of about 10 minutes on the horse, and then demand that you shovel the horse manure that had accumulated during the interminable grooming session. She is also likely to be so distracted with other students (even though they have their OWN instructor) that she will let you make really dangerous mistakes... For instance, after being lectured on how she would be reviewing our grooming techniques, I was inclined to remove a big mud clot from my horses ear, (never a problem with other horses I've worked with before). The horse reared up, breaking his lead rope and knocked me into the wall with more force than an NFL linebacker. The owner's response - "oh, sorry - that is the wrong kind of lead rope, and should never have been there for you to use." Of course, she was standing about 2 feet away from me the whole time to "observe" me. Once we finally made it into the arena and actually got onto our horses, she instructed us not to put our feet in the stirrups or hold the reins. Instead, she told us how we could control the horses using nothing but "energy". We went in circles on lunge lines for about ten minutes trying to get the horses to obey our "energy" and that was the end of our "lesson". The owner did SEEM to have a lot of horse knowledge, but her teaching technique seems insane to me, and her facility is run down and depressing. The horses are untrained and look very unhealthy. The staff is over-solicitous - the text messages trying to get us to come back started almost immediately afterword (I've never had that from other stables). My advice would be to try a stable where SAFETY is a top priority.
