After a brief introduction, my son then went right into his lesson. When I arrived to pick my son up at the end of camp today, he was filling a horse trough and helping with the grooming of Skittles; the newest horse at the stable. This camp/ stable provides lessons without the "fluff". Sydney (the owner) is very direct, open and honest about what it takes to learn to ride and care for a horse. Within the first day, my son learned how to care for a horse as well as was able to trot on a horse without an equestrian saddle. *COVID protocols are followed during the pandemic

The best part about that is there is a SunCrest van that will meet you in Austin! Yes, you don't necessarily have to drive to Manor to take your kid to camp. That rocks. I've been riding with Stephanie for about six years now and we've been on countless parades and trails. She's knowledgeable and willing to give as much help as you want. I would recommend boarding here and/or just coming out for a ride at Lake Travis or one of the other places that the SunCrest horses visit.

I googled a few places close to Austin that offered trail rides and the prices were all in the $100 range per person. When I saw that All White Fences offered an hour long trail ride for under $100 I was sold. It also helped that they had a website (and that it was user friendly) with plenty or pictures and information about what they do. We called and spoke to Angel who was able to schedule us to go on the same day. It was a thirty minute drive from where we were staying in Austin. The scenery in Manor is gorgeous and made the drive there lots of fun. We thought we were lost for a moment but once we saw the white fences we knew we were in the right place. This isn't really the cowboy hat Texas kinda place that might be expected. Instead the staff trains Dressage riders for competitions. I was able to see some riders training and it was all very elegant. Angel took good care of us and picked some wonderful horses for us to ride and gave us all the necessary instructions. The trail is beautiful with plenty of hills and small areas where the horses will trot a bit. They are wonderfully well-mannered and we had no problems with them. If you don't mind the drive, I recommend All White Fences.

It's also one of the most affordable hunter/jumper facilities in Austin for boarding and lessons, and relatively convenient to town (especially with the new tollway to Manor). I'm an experienced rider who took lessons here for many years. I only boarded a young prospect for a short period of time, and so relied on other owners and Stacie to provide me with horses to jump in lessons and take to shows. There was always an interesting and challenging horse available to me, and even a couple that I connected with and will remember forever. As for facilities, there are two outdoor arenas. One is grass footing, and the other is a large sand arena where the lessons are usually conducted. The barns are airy and clean, and there are plenty of acre sized paddocks for turnout. I believe there are even some trails through the woods, but I never used them.

The instruction at Madrone Ranch is superior and the prices are reasonable. While their lesson program is not as large as some of the other barns in Austin, this also means you get a more tailored-approach to your instruction. Madrone Ranch is "new" in the sense that it's only in its 4th year of operation. Since its inception in 2002, Madrone Ranch has grown into one of Austin's leading equine operations. There are beautiful trails to go on along the perimeter of the property, with overlooks out across the Texas Hill Country. Madrone Ranch is also located within an "equestrian community" which means you could have your horse and live there too! There is a sales office on the property if you are interested in looking into the remaining lots for sale.

I believe in giving horses lots of room and here there's a great multi acre pasture below a great shaded hillside. There's a nice round pen and really nice level arena with great footing. Paige is a great trainer who focuses on both the rider and the horse. She explains concepts in a way that is easy to understand, and took me from barely having jumped to competing in the jumpers at A shows. I have also used her to help buy and sell my horse, and she was extremely professional and upfront about what is realistic during those processes. The assistant trainer Cathy is also just as good, and I've benefited from having two quality trainers to improve my riding skills. There's a great group of people at Coraggio - no barn drama here!
