I found this bakery on Yelp on Sat. I decided to go on Sunday. I discovered they had caramel cake, one of my favorites. I couldn't wait to try it. The cake was good, it wasn't as fresh as I would have liked it or maybe it was fresh but not as moist as I would have preferred it to be. I also purchased apple pie for a friend. He said it was good. Not his Mothers but it was good. I purchased a Greek Turkey Wrap that came with chips. I will attach a picture of my chips when I opened the bag. The wrap was very good. I will definitely purchase again. I don't know how my chips arrived busted open. My friend had the Roast Turkey Club ..he said it was also good. The only complaint was he failed to tell them no bacon. When you don't eat pork, that's not a good thing to be touching what you have to eat. No eating utensils were included for the cake/pie. That would have been nice to have in the bag. The service was excellent. The ambiance was welcoming. I saw some teas & other items I would like to try. I love this place. They have delicious cakes, many southern cakes (like caramel cake) I don't see many other places, and other eclectic flavors. They have a scout r that serves sandwiches for breakfast and launch the hat are delicious. The service is always friendly, but they can get busy. I stopped by here on my way to DeKalb Farmers Market. I liked the cute shabby chic decor and was pleased to see other patrons there on a late Sunday afternoon. I ordered a slice of the caramel cake but was unfortunately disappointed. The cake itself was on the dry side, and the caramel frosting was extremely sweet. I came in to pick up a door dash order. I live in the area but knew nothing about this spot. I decided to take my wallet inside w me to get a treat for myself. Upon entry it was only 1 other customer and 4 employees. Not one of them acknowledged me. No hello welcome in. Hello we'll be right with you. Im thinking maybe they didnt see me. I ask the customer thats standing there; are you in line. She says no so i proceed to the counter; pick up a business card for future visits. We were celebrating a friend's birthday and decided to pick up cake from Southern Sweets to celebrate her! We ordered the Carrot Spice cake and it was a pretty easy pickup process. The cake itself is a generous portion. The cake crumb was moist and tender and I LOVED the cream cheese portion. The pecan coating was a nice crunchy contrast as well. I came to visit for the first time and probably the last time. Southern Sweets Bakery is tucked away in an industrial area off a road riddled with potholes. The place could use a serious facelift. The walls are covered in accolades from 20 years ago and oversized eclectic art. The customer facing part is smaller than you would think with only a few tables that you can eat at. The menu is written on chalkboards that are mounted at least 8 or 9 feet in the air. There is a small selection of shelf stable items such as decorated cookies and jarred/boxed items. There is also a small open cooler with deli items, macarons and cupcakes. I ordered a chicken Caesar wrap (uncommon on menus these days!! They are harder to find than you would think) and 4 slices of cake. I got the orange blossom pound cake for my husband as well as a carrot cake slice and for myself I got the peanut butter mousse cake and raspberry chocolate mousse cake. The chicken Caesar wrap fell apart when I tried to pick up each half, and the chicken inside was microwaved (I could hear the microwave beeping as it was being made and the chicken was super dry and rubbery as a result). I don't expect anyone to grill a fresh chicken breast for a wrap but I feel like most any other method of reheating would have been preferred. Throw it on a flat top, warm it in a pan, etc. Do literally anything but microwave it! I will not be ordering the lunch menu again. No complaints about the peanut butter mousse cake, but the raspberry chocolate one had only a hint of raspberry in it. The underlying thin layer of cake was on the drier side. My husband enjoyed his two slices of cake. If he wants more in the future I would fetch them for him and maybe try another cake but that is about the extent of my willingness to return. read more

Food was good. I had lunch special 1/2 sandwich & soup (tomato basil). Service was great at the time I was there and the Ambiance of the restaurant was okay. I like the art on the walls and I like that the menus were written on a chalkboard. I like that the restaurant has a modern touch in technology and still provides the old school way people are use to. While Yelp asks if restaurant(s) provide QR codes for menus to me this allows for people to possibly tamper with the QR codes and getting away with possibly hacking a customer. From a very particular customer that has his own view on how I perceive things to be. The location of where the trash is while not bad could be better and more visible especially for people that are dining in. Wow! This place has been on my list for about a year, and I wish I had come sooner. It is not a small bakery, there is quite a bit of indoor and outdoor seating and just SO MANY cakes. Way more cakes than they have on their website, which was a pleasant surprise. It was crowded as well, not too crowded, but more people than I expected for the time that I came. I got several slices of cake ($7 per slice): the amaretto butter (a bit too sweet for me), the Oreo cheesecake (only type of cheesecake I'll eat!), and the German chocolate cake (absolutely fantastic, devoured by me, my friend and my husband). My vegan friends have previously raved about this bakery because of the delicious options available to them as well. I also ordered a classic breakfast (~$13) of eggs, biscuit, grits and chicken sausage. Wasn't expecting too much as I don't typically love the type of biscuit shown in the pictures I saw. But the biscuit was actually incredibly moist and tasty! I even asked for more raspberry jam because I have a special sweet tooth and wanted to slather my biscuit in it. The chicken sausage was especially good too, some of the best I've had, where you genuinely think to yourself, "Is this really not pork?" And I felt like the eggs were cooked perfectly and so tasty. The grits were a bit watery but could've been a one off and next time I'll probably want to try the potatoes anyways. I also got the Squeeze King Blueberry Lemonade, which interested me because it is from a local farm and is just juice, water, sugar and puree. It was very good and not too sweet, though I'll probably still water it down a bit at home. Breakfast is served until 11 on weekdays and 1 on weekends, which made me very happy as I love breakfast, and I tend to sleep in. Many people were also enjoying lunch with friends at the time that I came in, and I got the feeling that this place has its fair share of local regulars, which is always a good sign! It's in kind of a warehouse district looking area, but this little place clearly was not hidden from the locals who were streaming in. A splendid spread of baked goods awaited, but I was surprised how many of them were vegan. I sampled what was described as a chocolate raspberry mousse cake, bearing in mind that mousse is a very non-vegan foodstuff. The rich flavor and smooth texture did little to disappoint, and if it was coconut or something like that there wasn't any strange or off taste to dissuade me from wolfing that thing down. I just love when you have a great experience at the register and people are so friendly and polite! Nowadays people are always rushing you and asking you what do you want pressuring you to order quickly. Sometimes I even tell people that it's my first time there and they don't even acknowledge it. These folks were different! There were two ladies at the register and I told them I was struggling between four choices on the menu. After she said they were all good or popular, I invited them to make a choice for me. They selected shrimp and grits which is actually shrimp cakes and Parmesan cheese grits. I love the non traditional shrimp cakes. It was delicious along with the creamy grits! I returned another day for French toast and this too was delicious yet different. The bread is soaked in the batter giving it a bread pudding-like texture. It was super moist and flavorful. This place is a hidden gem. I came here because it's the only place in the area that offers turkey bacon as an option for a breakfast sandwich. Parmesan grits and shrimp cakes with red pepper gravy. The grits were a little salty for my taste but still good. I liked the shrimp cake, it was different. It was a healthy portion. My favorite part of the meal was the toast with butter and accompanying raspberry jam. This was great! I love jams and if I was going home I would have purchased the larger portion to take with me. It finally happened. I finally made my way to Southern Sweets. Not once...but twice in a week. Why you might ask? Because. These. Sweets. Are. Absolutely. Delightful. And. Delicious. And. Amazing. I mean soooo many things but all I wanted was the sweet stuff. So I decided to get a slice of the carrot cake and place my order with the young lady at the counter. I will say they run a pretty tight operation and those orders come up and out pretty fast. The cake slice was a little less than $7 and it was worth every penny! The slice was huge! It was so fresh and light and the frosting wasn't overpowering yet sweet enough for me to not want to put it down. The walnuts, the cinnamon, everything about that cake made me want more. I was really in love with how the cake was like a perfect blend of everything that goes into a carrot cake and the cream cheese frosting was just lovely. I gifted my husband with a slice of the Oreo cheesecake and stole a bite. My goodness. So creamy and full of Oreo. I mean what will I try next?? Southern Sweets has been on my Yelp list for a while so since I was finally in the area I decided to give them a try. Located behind God's back in an unassuming building in a commercial area off of Rio Circle. They are known for their breakfast, lunch, and treats vegan and regular. I decided to practice willpower and only get what I originally came for which was the vegan carrot cake. The cake was delicious. A little too much frosting for me but I just took it off.
