My wife and I were out for our weekly Saturday new restaurant jaunt among the Twin Cities, We had to go south for an errand, let's try Southern Social. I ordered a Size 7 IPA from a local brewery, cool. Great local beer. Our server came by and we ordered a shrimp po' boy and the pulled pork sammy. The runner came by and dropped them off after about 7 minutes. Nice. We didn't see our server for about 20 minutes, not sure if she went out for a smoke break or it was her lunch break, I so wanted to give this place five stars, but the service was that bad. Not rude or anything, we just never saw her. The Po' Boy was amazing, the bread was perfectly soft, yet crispy and the shrimp and remoulade was a wonderful meld. Unfortunately, the fries were almost cold. Please give me scalding hot fries, cold fries stink. Big minus one star. The pulled pork sandwich was good and I upgraded to collard greens, which were delicious, but a $3 upcharge. Boo. We saw that fries were the same price on the side, make that a free substitution. Great food, but cold fries and so-so service made a five star down to a 4 star. read more

Before I sat down, the ambiance is beautiful. Staff is friendly as soon as I sat down. Waiter, Jillian, was patient and helpful with deciding what to order (because there are so many good options). After narrowing four meals down to one, I decided on the Mississippi Pot roast with Mac and collard greens. Initially, every thing looks good. Mac was a bit disappointing to look at because it didn't look baked (which is how Mac and cheese typically cooked in the south) but after I bite into it, it tasted decent. It was flavorful but kinda reminded me of nacho cheese. . Greens was nothing spectacular, it was definitely not memorable. The pot roast was good. Roast very tender and the pepperocinis gave that crunch to break up that mushy taste. Toast was a bit odd with the meal but it was so buttery and tasted good. It was a great experience. When we first approached this restaurant, I was a little off-put, because it's located in the parking lot of a couple different hotels, and so it almost felt like we were heading to a hotel-restaurant. Luckily, I was incorrect and this establishment is stand-alone. I do suspect during the week, though, they get a lot of hotel guest traffic. The inside is very new-age-Americana restaurant, where you know they're going to have an $18 burger with a fancy aioli, and they definitely have that. I got a pastrami sandwich and my wife got the special for the day which was a Burnt End grilled cheese. Both dishes were good. Our waiter seemed a bit out-of-it, perhaps just mid-afternoon haze, or perhaps a little mid-shift helper. He took 2 tries to get our order recorded, incorrectly gave me sweet potato fries when I ordered regular fries, and brought my wife a bacon avocado grilled cheese instead of the burnt end grilled cheese she ordered. I also found it weird when he asked me about my credit card when he returned the bill for tip/sign. I get it - I'm a middle-aged white guy, so I must like talking about credit cards, but it just feels weird in the context of waiter/patron relationship and I've never had it happen before. I had the French 75, which included the addition of peach liqueur to the standard recipe. The peach was surprisingly okay, but the lack of bubbles was noticeable and not great. Perhaps this was due to how long it took to serve the drink. My wife got the Lavender and Mint house-made soda and enjoyed it. Finally, this restaurant racks on a 3% surcharge which they don't disclose upfront as far as I could tell neither on the menu nor on the restaurant doors nor on the hostess stand. You just see your bill with "Surcharge (3.00%)" on the bottom. Not courtesy "credit card surcharge" or other bogus explanation for why, just "screw you, pay 3% more" I don't think we'll be going back any time soon. We made a reservation for a Sunday for 4 people. Since we were a bit early, we sat at the bar for a bit and got some drinks. They have a good selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The place has a nice atmosphere with dark walls but bright light fixtures. The bar area was definitely a vibe and I'd probably eat there next time. When we were seated at our booth, we were surprised by how small it was. Luckily, we could move the table a bit, but it was not the most comfortable for the older folks in the party. Our server was kind and attentive and I appreciated the gluten-friendly designations to help guide my decision. I met up a friend for dinner and was craving soul food. My friend suggested this restaurant and it's more bbq than soul food. I came here for NYE and I was so impressed! We were a group of four and despite it being a pretty busy night, we received good service and didn't wait too long for our food. They have a wonderful food and beverage menu, complete with several NA options. At the table, we got the Shrimp Po Boy, Burnt Ends Flat Bread, Shrimp and Grits and Red Beans and Rice. Everything was SO good! I would get everything again and try more. They have a great selection of southern food with a trendy twist, and they food is reasonably priced. The decor is beautifully contemporary casual and the patio features views of a small pond and several large trees that make you feel like you're in a state park. The service was excellent. We tried the Hurricane Social Drinks, available in servings for 4 or 8. It was delicious and came with a fabulous crystal punch bowl and cups. The flatbread pizzas were delicious and easily shared. The Lemon Ricotta pizza was zesty and fresh with generous dollops of ricotta cheese. The Bolo Peach pizza was sweet and slightly spicy. We met my daughter, son n law and grandson at 1, they arrived 20 minutes early. The waitress took their drink order but wasn't served yet by the time we arrived. We waited for 20 minutes and she was totally focused on one table. We went to the bar and ordered our own, we didn't see their drink at all on the rail. As I'm also a recovering Yankee living in the south, I was looking forward to trying "modern Southern" to see what they do here in Minnesota. Drinks? Excellent. Manhattan was perfect and the beer I had for second course was cold, crisp and delicious. I can't believe my friend convinced me to order the chicken tenders. The food here is very good. The service was bad. Our server took time to even come by our table and it wasn't very busy. She came back 10 minutes later for us to order. Then our drinks arrived with the entrees. Drinks weren't refilled. Check was delivered when we were almost done with dessert. We had to go to the bar to have the credit card processed as she didn't come back for 20 minutes after we were done. My husband really liked the Chicken and Dumplings and said they were filling and well made. The Carolina Fried Chicken Sandwich had a wonderful bun and a much smaller piece of chicken. Southern Social was recommended to us by multiple people, so when we had last minute cancelled plans, we headed over to Eagan to check this place out. To note, they don't take reservations on Saturday evenings, so it's first come first serve. We didn't have a problem getting seated right away at 5:30p, party of 2. The space itself is large, well-decorated, with plenty of seating. Service was a bit all over the place, which is why I gave this a 4 star. Our server was very nice and attentive, however, the wrong food came to our table at 3 different instances, and somehow I ended up with two drinks, although I only ordered and paid for one. With that being said, probably one of the best Old Fashioneds I've had in a while. A bit sweeter and less spirit-forward than the traditional. The food itself was tasty, but I probably wouldn't order the same entrees again. Cheese curds were delicious. The Gumbo was a bit too liquidy, the chicken was dry, and the serving size wasn't too satisfying. My partner ordered one of the burgers, which was basically rare, although he ordered it medium, though it tasted really good. Man I really want to like this place. It looks nice enough. It's very busy, probably bc it's new and the only thing in the area. I like the wedge salad and the chicken and Mac and cheese are both pretty good. I tried the snapper and it was super dry, no sauce, over cooked, tried the catfish last week and it was the worst catfish I ever ever had. It's always difficult for me to review a place that has equal pros and cons. There are a lot of good things here, but ultimately it sums up to just an ok experience, so I'm giving this place 3 stars: PROS: This place takes reservations! Nice layout that is really set up for socializing. The decor is a bit more elegant than a regular bar, so this place can be good for both casual and slightly more refined vibes. They have a patio, which I'm sure will be great in the warm months. And they have a really great cocktail and mocktail menu, so again, great for socializing! CONS: This place is pretty far outside the city. Parking is tight even with a parking lot. The staff, although nice, seemed like they were kind of busy, so I'm not sure how great that will pan out with larger parties. FOOD: First, let me say that my chicken was absolutely delicious and I was throughly impressed by how it was perfectly seasoned, well done, and crispy! This is my second time at this location. Stopped in for a late dinner with a friend. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and seated at a booth in the bar area. Our server was nice- kinda funny. We started with fried green tomatoes. I thought they were very good. Surprisingly, I actually liked the grits (first time for those). For our meal, we shared the chicken tenders which are on special on Wednesdays. Very good! Served hot and fresh. I really liked the mustard. Great flavoring. I'd definitely get again. They do not take reservations and is based on first come first serve. We had a party of 8 and was told to get there by 6. Our waitress was very friendly and even though they were really busy we didn't feel rushed to order. It was a very busy Saturday evening and took about 30 mins for my party to be seated. There is a bar for you to sit at and have a few drinks while waiting. The waiting area isn't that big but can seat about 10 people. They have a combination of booth and tables. The salad, cornbread and the side dishes were absolutely delicious and I would highly recommend. The entrees in my opinion is on the saltier side. The briskets on the BBQ Platter were super dry. My party also ordered the brisket platter and let's just say it wasn't really touched. Luckily we ordered enough to share dishes. More of a 3.5 than a 4 but I am rounding up because I would come back for a Happy Hour if I am in the area: Ambiance- the interior is a 5/5: sleek, moody, modern and dark in a good way. Skin was ok but also a little salty, not too many other seasonings were present though Ribs-2/5 not sure if we went on an off day but this was overly salty and it overpowered any other seasoning that was on it. Maybe needed more bbq sauce too but our table all took a bite of our friend's rib and agreed that it was too salty and not worth taking home which is a bummer because it looked good Sides-4/5: solid collared greens and mashed potatoes. Fries were really good. Macaroni solid was solid. Drinks: 5/5- fun cocktails, lots of whisky options and I love the punch bowls. I've been to souther social twice now and I'd give it a 3.5 rating. Parking lot seems small and crowded- had to park around the back of a motel. Inside of the restaurant is pretty! It's loud though and we felt like we had to shout to hear each other. Music was too loud and didn't fit the vibe of the restaurant. The outdoor patio wasn't available on either of my visits but it looked so nice by the pond!! What we tried: Fried pickles - pretty good but too salty Fried green tomato flat bread - incredible!! My favorite item! Fried chicken sandwich - okay, not much flavor My husband had the meatloaf - it was okay, very heavy I tried the shrimp and grits. It only came with four shrimp and the grits were heavy as well, not creamy. My friend tried the brisket grilled cheese. She said the meat was too think and it was hard to eat. I tried to order a slushie but the machine was broken. Instead I ordered a sweet tea and that was excellent. The do give you a free dessert on your birthday!! We shared the beignets and they were okay. A little too dense without a lot of flavor. Staff is really friendly and hard working but might be overworked because service was slow. We started off with the Fried Green Tomatoes which were really good, they sat on top of white cheddar and caramelized on grits with a cajun dill buttermilk ranch on top. This is a favorite spot for the hubby and I to grab drinks on a weeknight. Super happy with their bartenders and cocktails. I'm a Martini person, he loves mezcal margaritas. There's lots of options for both of us. It's a pretty loud space, I'm not into the table sharing thing when I go out for a nice dinner, I want a bit more intimacy. I prefer the social tables in a more casual brewery type setting. This is an expensive dinner. Love the bolo peach flatbread and the fried chicken is good. I probably don't consider it super authentic southern fare, it is more based on it. The pastrami sandwich is good, also. They don't do reservations within 3 hours of the time you're going, or at all on Friday and Saturday evenings, which I personally don't love. You totally might find yourself standing around for 30+ minutes because they literally won't even tell you if they have tables open if you call. This loses a star for me. Fun, lively atmosphere. Excellent service. Great food will definitely bring us back. We stopped here after a nearby movie so it was a later dining time. We were immediately seated in a booth for two. If you want an intimate conversation, this is not the place for that. It's loud, busy and full of energy. We were here often when it was Green Mill and they have done a nice job of adding windows and more light and updating the interior to give it a more modern feel. Chicken seemed to be a signature item so I had the House Chicken sandwich and husband had the chicken tenders. We then split our meals so we could try both. I had coleslaw on my sandwich as well as a side and it was fresh, crunchy, and tasty. The chicken was tender with a nice flavorful coating. The bun for my sandwich was Uber fresh. We planned to come down just to have drinks with friends, but everything smelled so good that we at least decided to get a couple small sided. Tried the corn and grits, both were fantastic. Also snagged a wing from a friend, which were also good, with Bourbon BBQ. I tried a Pablo Diablo to drink, which was super refreshing. However, I wanted a Bushwhacker slushie, but the machines weren't working yet. Hubs had the Social Buck and said he couldn't really detect any of the flavors. I checked out Southern Social in Eagan on a Friday after work. The photos look tasty but honestly our review is all over the place. If you like Spicy - you'll love the hush puppies! The fried green tomatoes were very SMALL and u got 3 slices for $13. So don't plan on sharing this appetizer. They also weren't very good. I felt this dish was more about the grits since you got a lot more of them. I don't care for grits, but I loved theirs. They were so good! The flatbread pizza dough was phenomenal but their sauce was really sweet and I like mine more Italian spicy flavored. My friend said her chicken tenders were really salty. She wondered if they salted the fries and accidentally got salt all over her chicken too? My other friend loved the biscuits and homemade jam. My friend's husband said the chicken was very tender and juicy. So our review is up and down and all over the place. It was definitely busy though. The inside is nice and they have outdoor seating. Well Eagan needed a new great food place and it sure got one in Southern Social. They were packed at 5pm on what I believe is only their 3rd Saturday open. Without a reservation we snagged a spot at the bar. Our bartender, Michelle, did a nice job of checking in with us even though she was clearly swamped. There was bit of confusion with two different menus; (hope my menu photos are of the correct menu) but we had no issues ordering. We ordered the fried green tomatoes first. I am always skeptical of grits here in the great north but these were cooked well and not gritty. Not quite as smooth as the ones we had in Georgia but great flavor none the less. Overall great taste and good mix of textures. Second item we had was the nachos. Clearly the chips are house made. The chips need to be sturdy to handle all the topping but were over salted and a bit too thick. (Fired too long) The pulled pork had a nice flavor and I was glad it wasn't smothered in BBQ sauce, just the right amount. The white sauce was a bit on the skimpy side. With those thick chips more of the white sauce! The side of grits was ok. Again not as good as you can find in the south. Good overall flavor just not as smooth as I wanted. I'd eat them again though, so don't get me wrong. They were still good. There is quite a nice selection of craft beers and I watched a bartender make a neat "social" drink. Served in a crystal punch bowl (which solved my question of why the punch bowls!). Looks like it would be a tasty treat for a night out with friends. I got a chance to enjoy this spot with a group of friends and we had a lovely time with some mixed reviews on the food. First off we had made a reservation and it was very easy to do. On the website I could only do up to 6 people but when we called in, they happily added for a 7th person! The service here was wonderful! Everyone was very friendly and professional. We were taken very good care of the whole time! As for the food. The shrimp po boys said they were "blackened shrimp" they were not. They were lacking flavor. The sweet potato fries and regular fries were both very good! The biscuit platter was delicious! Definitely get that! The meat platters were tasty but could have used more seasoning. The Mac and cheese was pretty standard. The beignets tasted more like a toaster strudel. Still good just not what we were expecting. This place has a beautiful patio that over looks a pond.
