The sauce - I am a bbq sauce maker and connoisseur. So the Brush Fire is the bomb, it's their original sauce- it's not as spicy as it sounds but has a kick and is vinegar based. It's thick and sticks to the protein. The Swine Wine I tried it's a basic BBQ Sauce vinaigrette and it's good too. So the food I ordered. Let's start with the pulled Chicken-dry, tasteless and they forgot the pull part because I received a whole chicken breast with a few pieces ripped off to cover up the fact that I was given the last piece of crap for the day and no time or attention to detail was given. Pulled chicken NEEDS dark meat! I drove all the way there because I wanted to order fried okra and it needed to stay crispy. Well it was greasy, no breading and one piece was dry and bitter ... THE WORST OKRA EVER!!! I have photos to back me up. The dining room was filthy as well, that turned me off and I nearly walked out. Mac and cheese was ok. Very oily and charred nothing to brag about. I'd like to believe it's homemade but it taste like most of the other BBQ restaurants here. Texas toast is an option, but not free. It's thick and dry. If it's warm, taste good. Good for a sandwich. Vegetarians/Vegans- any special diets, not much for you here. The greens and green beans are filled with pork. Coleslaw has mayo and not many people like it, basically, you can get bread and a simple salad.... You know like the rest of Huntsville I'm unsure if I'd get treated any better or had a better o stall experience if I ever go back. If so I'll update. Perhaps they had an off day but it was way too off to spend that kind of money. Don't know if I'll go back

This place has been holding it down since 1963, and they've got the plaque to prove it, proudly posted as a member of the Alabama Barbeque Hall of Fame. When you walk in, it feels like you just stepped into a time capsule where calories do not count and everybody knows how to properly pronounce "slaw." The ambience absolutely screams old school BBQ joint. Wood paneling. No nonsense tables. The kind of place where you half expect your uncle to be in the corner arguing about college football. Now let's talk food, because that is why we're here. The pulled chicken? Outstanding. Tender, juicy, packed with flavor. It showed up ready to win. If it ran for office, I would vote for it. That chicken understood the assignment. The BBQ chicken had that beautiful crisped skin that makes you lean in like, "Oh yeah, this is about to be serious." But then it hit the plate a little under seasoned. The sauce was on the thinner side too. Not bad, just more "light drizzle at a picnic" than "bold backyard pitmaster energy." And let me take a moment to publicly thank the potato salad. Special shout out. Creamy, balanced, and clearly made by somebody's grandmother who does not measure anything and does not need to. All in all, Johnny's is a solid four stars. Historic, nostalgic, and when they hit, they really hit. I'll be back, mostly for that pulled chicken and potato salad combo that had me considering a second plate and a nap.

Also came with the slaw on the top - good. The pork was tender and well-trimed, but I didn't catch much smoke. We had a side of fries, they were nice and fat, but not super warm. We had a side of green beans. They were a little overcooked but had a nice flavor, with a slight bit of a pickled flavor. Good value for the price.

Those who know BBQ often say, "For best BBQ in Alabama, go to Big Bob's." It's not just the best,…read morebut also the inventor's of Alabama Style BBQ, which is particularly notable for the white sauce that's served here and was invented by Big Bob. Big Bob founded the spot back in 1925 and only recently passed away, giving the business to his children. The place is an institution of the state and is packed on weekends. Prices are from an era that's now long gone, making this not only incredible BBQ, but also a steal for the money. I mean, who sells a BBQ pork sandwich for under $5 in 2026? Many staff working here clearly have been around for a long, long time. So, one might ask, what should I get at Big Bob's? For starters, the chicken wings. Likely the best smoked wings to be had anywhere: just the right amount of smokey profile while being tender and juicy. True perfection in something that's hard to master. Next, one of the samplers is not a bad idea. Pulled pork is truly state of the art, winning many competitions around the South. Ribs are fall off the bone and delicious. Brisket is good, but a low fat version that might or might not be to someone's taste. Hand cut French fries and baked beans as a side, and finally, life is all set. Sure, if one gets more adventure, the ice box cakes are wonderful also, with the coconut varietal being a standout. Stop by, enjoy and leave with bragging rights for having tried something truly one of a kind.

Since we were responsible road trippers with our water, I told the clerk that we didn't want the sodas. A back-and-forth ensued, her telling me the boxes come with sodas. I reiterated that we had water. She then said "well, it doesn't change the price." Apparently my not being a local, she thought I was seeking a discount, but I wasn't - I didn't want to waste something we weren't going to drink. That interaction aside, the sandwiches - in the top five meals this trip. Unfortunately, the soup was lukewarm (the plastic bowls perhaps?) The pecan pie was delicious. We regret not getting a couple more sandwiches for later.
