I don't know what happened to this place because we used to love it. Last Sunday we decided to go there after church and it was awful! Service was so-so but the food had really gone down hill. Neither my husband nor I were able to even finish it. Truthfully, I don't think I was able to even eat 1/3 of mine. It had an odd taste as well, edible but odd. There was a missing item from the order and the server was very slow to notice I was out of coffee. It was taken care of after bringing it to her attention. Overall I gave them three stars being in a generous mood. Might try again, but it'll be awhile. read more

Stopped in here for lunch, first visit. This restaurant is housed in a historic building which one served as a railroad depot. The building inside and out has been beautifully renovated. I had their signature chicken salad on a croissant with a side of Italian pasta salad. The chicken salad was flavorful and fantastic, the bun was fresh, buttery and slightly toasted. The pasta salad was fine, but didn't really flip the switch for me. Service was excellent. They also had a great selection of homemade desserts - maybe next time! read more

We had lunch at Freight House a couple of weeks ago, and it was a super cool interior with loads of antiques. Our crew had the catfish fingers, chicken alfredo, and a cheeseburger. The catfish fingers were the best--so yummy, plus all the sides were tasty, too. Our server was friendly and efficient, and though it was pretty busy for a Saturday lunch, we didn't have to wait at all for a table for 6. We also got our food really quickly. We will definitely visit again when we are in the area! read more

I love seeing historic buildings repurposed and train station restaurants are some of my favorite. Had to give this one a try since I was passing through and the highway billboards said they were award winning Casual dining experience-fair market priced menu. The pimento cheese appetizer-yes! I order pimento cheese apps across the nation, this one is the first to give it a sweet pepper jelly drizzle. Some of my chips were a little soggy but the cheese spread and jelly shined on its own. The jelly was NOT spicy. I decided to go off menu and try their special of the night the limoncello mahi mahi. The piece of fish was appropriate for price and the sauce was a spin off of a traditional lemon piccata. Fish was cooked well and fork tender. My only real disappointment was my poor hush puppies. Those went to the rubbish bin. But that sauce-yes give me that on a piece of chicken with some penne pasta. Please and thank you. Overall a decent meal. Apparently this restaurant is not able to accommodate a party of 10 at 3 pm on a Saturday, even when the restaurant is practically empty. The hostess was unfriendly, and 3 servers came to the front to tell the hostess they couldn't take care of a 'big' party (2 of the party were small children). We were told we would have to wait for another party to finish their meal before we could be seated, and told it could be 30 minutes. All the while smaller parties were being immediately seated. We left after seeing 3 parties of 4 to 6 be seated with no waiting. I'm not inclined to wait while being treated so poorly. read more

My family and I stopped at the Freight House Restaurant in Downtown Hartselle on Saturday April 12th of this year and we have only been on the I-65 part of the city of Hartselle but we had never been to the Freight House Restaurant before or in Downtown Hartselle on US Highway 31 in Hartselle before until that day! Recommended. Wife and I had a late lunch (2 p.m.) and the restaurant was somewhat quiet. Seated immediately and drinks came very fast. We both ordered steaks (I got the train master and she got the bourbon brown sugar). Salads came very quickly, and were good. Once we got our steaks, mine was cooked perfectly but hers was well done (ordered med-rare). Waitress took her steak back and a new one was brought out fairly quickly and correct this time. I used to love this place. Good food, service and atmosphere were worth the visit. But I was so disappointed when we ate there Saturday afternoon . I ordered fried shrimp, baked potato, and coleslaw. The shrimp were big and delicious and the baked potato was just ok. Coleslaw was just hand chopped cabbage with nothing added. The hush puppies were the worst I have ever tried to eat. No flavor and I think they were from the night before and had been refried and were also cold. Our server was the only thing I can't complain about. You are going to lose a lot of business if you don't make adjustments. read more

Went to the Freight House today for Hartselle's Christmas Open House and it was great. My wife had the special of the day and was very happy with it. I had the catfish and 2 sides and very pleased. The entire staff worked together and was very friendly and efficient. The manager was also friendly. Food was good but basic. Service was great. We ordered the hobo special and it did not come with corn bread but was very tasty. Then we ordered the pimento cheese sliders they were delicious with a pepper jelly on them. Very nice addition, the portions were very large and we could have split something with an app. We got the onion straws for app and would recommend that. The cake for dessert was okay... and over priced for what it was. read more

We ordered the prime rib, Tuscan chicken, and pullet de Normandy. The prime rib was supposed to be medium rare and came out rare and cold. The pullet de Normandy was a casserole of what tasted like stove top stuffing with chicken and way too much cheese. The Tuscan chicken was good, but should have sun dried tomatoes on top vs a slice of tomato. The sides were also not great. Steamed broccoli and baked potato were both crunchy and not fully cooked. The service was ok. It is unlikely I would dine here again. read more

Our party of four stopped at this awesome delightful restaurant on our drive back from Florida on the way to Kentucky. We saw a sign on the highway and it said the Freight House was a top 8 restaurant in Alabama. I have to say I was extremely pleased and pleasantly surprised with the food, staff, decor, location and all the neat pictures and antiques throughout the restaurant. We loved the train theme.
