Fried Shrimp Basket
Gary K.

I had the Large Fried Shrimp basket which came with hushpuppies and fries, the kind that have the crispy coating on them. I was hoping that I was going to get, fresh from the Alabama Gulf Shrimp but although they had the raw fresh shrimp the Fried Shrimp that you get with the Fried Shrimp Basket is from Frozen Shrimp. I didn't try the steamed but may the next time around because it would be a place that I'd revisit but not one that I'd make a special out of the way trip to. The Shrimp was good but not great and not near as good as Georges Steak Pit or Lash's Seafood near Florence, Al which is some of the best fresh Gulf Shrimp in North Alabama area but this review is for Ard's. The Good: The Shrimp, fries, and hushpuppies are cooked right before you as you order so when you get them they are HOT and Fresh out of the oil. The taste is also good but not near as good as fresh gulf shrimp nor is it the best frozen fried shrimp I've had. I've had much better down at/on the Gulf and at some other North Alabama places but for North Alabama it was good and more importantly wasn't bad. The crispy fries were also tasty and the crispy coating (which I don't usually like) was actually good and did make the fries crispy in texture. The Hushpuppies were also good and definitely had corn inside but I don't know that there was onion because if there was then it wasn't noticeable. Also having a 95 Alabama Heath rating was also very good. The Baskets are served up in a Styrofoam container so you can take them or eat in whichever is your pleasure. Last, another positive, is that according to their street signage Ard's Seafood Market received the 2016, 2017, & 2018 People's Choice Award "Taste of the Valley". I don't know if that was for their fresh (raw) fish or what they served cooked for inside. The Negatives: Although the Fried Shrimp basket was frozen shrimp it was good but what was not so good was that the owner/cook/manager couldn't tell me where the shrimp originated so I don't know if it was domestic shrimp or from Southeast Asia. Another negative, minor though, was that if you want to eat in your seating is very limited with only about 6 or 7 tables and the tables mostly set 2 to 3 patrons each. Also with no drink machine you don't get refills and your only choice are Pepsi bottled products in a cooler inside. Ard's is a good place to eat and the Seafood is tasty but I can't say it's one of the best in North Alabama or not one that I would say is worth driving a long way for or going way out of your way for. If in Decatur though then it's well worth stopping by if you hav a taste for seafood.

Fresh gulf shrimp. Need I say more? It's always good. I have them steam the seafood I get and it's packed very well for traveling.

La Estrella Food and Fish Market - Very, very nice produce area. One of the top two in Decatur, if not THE top.

Our eyes popped, mouths fell agape, and rumors of fainting abounded. The overall shopper's experience here is the best in Decatur. Among the Pan Dulces (Conchas, Ojo de Buyes, and such), we espied something similar enough to Chocolate-covered Doughnuts to make us kill for it. But we had a bag of goodies we'd already purchased and somehow staved ourselves off. Formerly at 6th Avenue, LEF&FM is a must visit. Oddly, four of the other Supermercados are within walking distance and thus in direct competition, a move seemingly both unwarranted and unwise, unless a concentrated Hispanic population in the immediate area ensures their collective viability. I can't say. The first items you'll notice as you walk in are the greens and such in the well-stocked and eye-catching produce area, and the atmosphere was well ratcheted up in our estimation due to the fact that the employees were all friendly. LEF&FM had a wonderful dairy department, stocked with Queso this, Quesillo that, Quesadillo these, and Crema those. Some cheeses had Jalapeno, others, Loroco, which is evidently a flower bud of Central American origin. The popular Cotija Molido, which is merely grated Cotija, was also evident. It's one of the crumbly cheese you'll see in Mexican food...in fact, I believe it's one of the ones of which you might say, "Why doesn't it melt?" In addition to the bakery and dairy areas, the display of "soda pops" (to import a term) and such was better than average. Yes, they have Jarritos, but also have Foco, Boing!, Tiky, and several others, some of which are actually Asian in origin, rather than Mexican or South American. We are already talking about returning here...and that's a thirty-plus-minute trip. And we won't come back empty handed. Possibly in a sugary haze, but not empty handed.

The only reason we didn't buy these is that we'd already eaten elsewhere AND bought elsewhere.

I ate here for multiple birthday parties at one time. We were in the party room with 34 people and…read moreit was very cramped and the AC was not really working. The thermostat was set on 50, but it was 81 in the room with no air flow. The rest of the restaurant was comfortable, but it was not in the party room. We also had one waitress for all 34 people, so getting drink refills were a challenge, but she did the best she could, so kudos to the waitress. I had the fried combo with fried catfish, fried shrimp, and the Cajun fries. I thought my food was pretty good. I tried some of my son's seafood boil he had and it was not too bad, but I've had better. I'm not sure if I'll go back, especially if we're in the party room.

Being our first time, we were never made to feel rushed making a decision on what we wanted to order. Once we did order, our food arrived very promptly and super hot off the stove. Everything was very tasty and seasoned just as I ordered. The shrimp was fresh and the sausage was delicious. Our whole meal was delicious. I ordered an extra to-go boil variety for my son. He stated his to-go order was very good and generous portions. All wait staff we encountered was professional and nice. I am glad I decided to give it a try and form my own opinions. I will be a return customer.
