The food is good! My husband loves the chicken wings. I'm a fan of the Cajun grilled chicken. The salad bar is great! Friendly staff!

I work in Decatur somewhat seasonally and so whenever I'm up here I enjoy opportunities to try…read moretheir local restaurants. On my most recent visit about three weeks ago, Marlin's wound up being my choice for a quick lunch. This is a rather oddball restaurant. Located in a standalone building on the edge of a large parking lot, the vibe inside I'd say is closest to an American-Mexican restaurant (a la Rosie's, Buena Vista, etc - think vibrant murals, comfy booth seating, large, open spaces). It was a little dimly lit but clean. A friendly hostess got me a seat quickly. The menu continues the oddball vibe. There's literally something for everyone here, with American-Mexican favorites like fajitas and arroz con pollo, along with standard American fare like chicken tenders and pasta dishes, as well as slightly more upscale items like fish and steak. I saw on their website they claim, "We're not just one thing - and that's the point." Well, they've certainly nailed that mantra. My waiter was a pleasant fellow who worked diligently to ensure my meal and check arrived in a timely way. He got me a refill without me having to ask but didn't hover or make me feel like I was unwelcome or a chore. My meal came out quickly and I was in and out in ~30 minutes, which is a pretty good turn-around for a sitdown restaurant. Every table seems to get a complimentary basket of hush puppies as a welcome/starter item. Again, I'd say the vibe overall is closer on the Mexican side of restaurants, so one might expect chips and salsa...but despite this seeming oddity, I'll admit I enjoyed them. They were golden brown, slightly sweet and slightly savory, and came with a tasty dipping sauce. I ate several. They have a lunch menu with reasonable pricing following a typical pattern of entree + one side (dinner portions come with two sides). I was feeling unadventurous and wound up getting chicken tenders and fries, as I thought the tenders looked pretty good in a picture I'd seen on Yelp. I asked for some ranch to dip in. My food was fresh at least in terms of temperature - almost scaldingly so. I got a strong frozen-fried vibe from both fries and tenders, though. Less a crime with the fries, and these were salted nicely and not too greasy. The chicken was rather dry and stringy and the breading didn't really "crunch." They were ultimately unobjectionable, but reminiscent of maybe a McDonalds crispy chicken strip, which seems a little underwhelming from a full restaurant. The ranch was also not very good - not buttermilk, so not super creamy, kind of bottled salad dressing vibes. Ketchup or the residual sauce from the hush puppies was a better choice. Overall, not super wowed but not super let down either. Service was solid and the environment was comfortable. Since the menu is so large, I'd imagine there's something for everyone - and maybe a sleeper hit dish on there, too.

The thermostat was set on 50, but it was 81 in the room with no air flow. The rest of the restaurant was comfortable, but it was not in the party room. We also had one waitress for all 34 people, so getting drink refills were a challenge, but she did the best she could, so kudos to the waitress. I had the fried combo with fried catfish, fried shrimp, and the Cajun fries. I thought my food was pretty good. I tried some of my son's seafood boil he had and it was not too bad, but I've had better. I'm not sure if I'll go back, especially if we're in the party room.

We were promptly and professionally greeted and seated. Being our first time, we were never made to feel rushed making a decision on what we wanted to order. Once we did order, our food arrived very promptly and super hot off the stove. Everything was very tasty and seasoned just as I ordered. The shrimp was fresh and the sausage was delicious. Our whole meal was delicious. I ordered an extra to-go boil variety for my son. He stated his to-go order was very good and generous portions. All wait staff we encountered was professional and nice. I am glad I decided to give it a try and form my own opinions. I will be a return customer.

I like to look down on people who look down on things and it's with no small amount of humility…read morethat I confess to sitting at the new Grimaldis eating pizza with my wife laughing at the restaurant across the street called Chuck's Fish. We'd never heard of it and having recently returned from the gulf I was feeling rather smug about seafood. What could this Chuck know about it all? Feeling adventurous, we decided to walk over and check it out after eating an entire pizza. Pizza was pretty good. Chuck's Fish was epic. I love that there's no TV at the bar. I love the decor. I love the fact that the namesake was a civil rights attorney. I love the fact that I can get incredible sashimi and order our daughter a pizza that is just as good as the joint across the street. Chuck I apologize. I promised the bar staff I'd Yelp you up after the first visit but once bitten twice shy so I gave it another go. I'm at your bar now. Trudy is helping me out. She's a pro. So was the team here on Saturday. That's why I'm back in fact. The people. Also. The food. Can go on about the food. But. Y'all. Just come and experience it. This social media stuff is only good for so much. A nudge. A hint. An inkling. Hamachi ponzu with fresh jalapeño. Yes. Get that. Goyza with one perfectly crisped side? Yeah. Two of those. Catch of the day? Either way is gonna be good. Tks Charles!!!! You got two new regulars. Hopefully many many more.

The decor in here is absolutely beautiful. Our server Stephanie was the sweetest ever. She gave us recommendations and helped us navigate choices on the menu. I opted for a glass of their rosé while he got their old fashioned, wasn't his favorite since they did not have Buffalo Trace. He's not a fan of Bulleit. However he was alright with it. We got the Cowboy sushi roll and snapper necks as appetizers. Both very flavorful and cooked well. Having Louisiana hot sauce was the icing on the cake for him. Entrees we got were both mainly red snapper, he got it Parmesan crusted and I went for bronzed because it came with mango salsa over rice pilaf. He had risotto. Both dishes were very good, however they definitely could have benefited from a bit more salt (in our opinion). Green beans were cooked extremely well. We both cleaned our plates! As for desserts I went for the bread pudding and he opted for the creme brûlée since he had never had any. Bread pudding was absolutely immaculate and I'm glad Steph talked me into adding ice cream. He wished he had gotten my dessert after trying it but his creme brûlée was still pretty decent. Not a big custard guy. Overall this was a great experience and to help others gauge their bill, we spend a little under $200 before the tip. Not extremely cheap but not overly expensive. We just like trying it all - drinks, apps, entrees and desserts. Would love to come back soon!

The restaurant was very clean, the staff were extremely accommodating and helpful, and the food was served quickly! Our server was Amanda, and she was friendly, ensured she got answers to our questions and was really kind! Hubs and I split a half dozen oysters on the half shell which were really good! They were served with lemon quarters, saltines (out of their wrappers), horseradish sauce (light on the horseradish), and a really delightful Mignonette sauce! I was busy taking photographs and hubs ordered the Mahi Mahi tacos for each of us. The French fries were delicious! Amanda was kind to ask for and bring us some ketchup. Again - great fries! Hubs really enjoyed the Mahi tacos!!! I did not like them. I expected a flaky, flavorful white fish and this tasted like seasoned overcooked chicken slices reminiscent of Budding's deli meats. Relooking at the menu they don't offer a chicken taco. Anyway, the avocado slices were fresh and good, although I scraped off some white sprinkles that were all over the tacos and I'm not sure what they were. A happy birthday boy was my main concern for this outing, and I look forward to returning to Fins UP! There's a lot of potential here with the bright open space, nice music and cute bar/seafood display area! Not to mention motivated kind staff willing to get questions answered and happy to serve! A couple of suggestions I have is: 1. top off all your salt/pepper shakers that are on each table. This is simple side work and should be part of each shift's closing/opening processes. It indicates apathy when I see half filled salt/pepper shakers. 2. use your pre-shift "tag-up" meetings to inform your staff about the types of oysters you are serving. There's a big difference between describing oysters as "Gulf Coast" versus "Murder Point Oysters" that are raised in baskets in the open waters of the bay, just west of Bayou La Batre, AL and are available year-round or serving "Sweet Jesus Oysters" that are grown in Hog Neck Creek, that offer a buttery flavor with celery notes and are available year-round. I make this distinction because if Fins UP were to serve either of these oysters, I would be beyond excited because it is rare to see them in north AL restaurants and serving them would set them apart! 3. sell some merch! The "get shucked" t-shirts would be fun to buy! I have one from a Palm Bay, FL restaurant at which I dined. I look forward to a glass of wine (when they get their liquor license, which I assume they will since "Bar" is in their name) and a half dozen Murder Points or Sweet Jesus' soon!
