I am just amazed at how absolutely delicious Southern Fried is, I have never tried their food before but after providing the fish for my sons party they have gained a new costumer!! We ordered 25 pieces of filet at I think a very reasonable price, our guest loved it so much we only have two pieces left!!! Extremely flavorful, beautiful crispy, and the owner provided a generous amount of toppings and other pairings for the fish. I HIGHLY recommend for your Catering's needs and just in general! Not only is the food amazing but the owner was extremely helpful and sweet, after we planned out my order I left feeling so so happy and excited to experience their cooking! I'm one happy mama!

I used to go to Southern Fried when I lived closer, so I have not been there in a while. The food is as good as it ever was, and it has always been great! But I was shocked to see what they have done with their prices!! * $20 for 2 pieces of fish and 6 shrimp? * $21.75 for 2 fish, 4 shrimp, and 3 chicken tenders!! This was always a great place to take the family, but now it is a little too pricey.

Took my sister, nephew and nieces to Southern Fried. The fish, chicken strips and shrimp were just as god as last time. The coleslaw was off! Will I come back a third time? I think the reason is that it was a full house, two orders were for people picking up to go, and two groups and my group arrived at the same time. Southern Fried is a small restaurant, and I don't think that they have ironed out all the kinks. So will I return? You bet your sweet patootie! :o) Hope to see you there! Small business that are good deserve more of my business!

Wow. Wow wow. Don't miss this place. Everything is homemade and delicious. It's small and quaint but clean. The owners are sweet and accommodating. They don't make places like this anymore. Don't let the small exteriors discourage you. The food is awesome.

What a cute place! We collectively agreed that we felt like we'd been transported to a little cafe on the coast! The menu was small, but the food was seasoned and cooked just right and the prices were reasonable. Here's the lowdown on what we tried on this trip: Fried shrimp: plump shrimp with a seasoned cornmeal breading. Crunchy and yummy. Honey BBQ wings: great flavor! Coleslaw: finely chopped with a light dressing. I liked that it wasn't overly dressed. Seasoned green beans a.k.a. the side of the day. Simple, but flavorful. Can't wait to return! Check it out!

Placed a to go order. Didn't take long to get a hot fresh plate. Not overly priced and the amount of food was great! I was full with left overs. Definitely a great spot for seafood!!

Buffalo wings! Nice, crispy, and great sauce!

So I took my wife and 1 yr old son for lunch and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We understand that it might be a longer wait due to the food being cooked once ordered. We had an order of buffalo wings, the Dad's plate (fillets, jumbo shrimp, and tenders) and fries w/ beans as sides. So our son started getting fussy due to being hungry so this lady (I'm assuming the owner) brought him a tender so he could eat while we wait on our food. The place was a winner already! The wings were delicious! Nice and crispy...good amount of meat on the bone...and I loved the buffalo sauce. Right amount of tang and heat. Main course was also excellent. The homemade tartar sauce was creamy and tangy...the shrimp were excellent...and the fillets were the right amount of crisp on the outside while still being soft on the inside. Our son loved the tenders and ate 2 on his own. My wife said she lived the fillets. The fries were also very good...the right amount of seasoning on it. Only thing slightly lacking were the beans. I found them good ..my wife is more used to charro beans (lol) so she would've preferred them a little more spicy. I found them to be just right. Food was so good we ordered more plates to go for our dinner! Definitely going back.

I recommend Southern Fried to anyone craving really authentic comfort food. Truly, great tasting food. The tenders are full of flavor, moist and perfectly crispy! The French fries are deliciously fried and seasoned to perfection. The fillet and shrimp were very well bartered and had that awesome crunch you crave in fried seafood. Even the tartar and cocktail sauce were very delicious, and I am not a fan of either normally but really liked theirs. I ordered the baby daddy basket and my wife ordered the tender basket. We just moved to the area recently and were both very impressed and found a new spot for comfort food! The staff is very friendly and helpful, and they brought our food out to our car which I really appreciated. Great tasting food and great people!

Best chicken tenders in the Valley. Don't recommend the fries. They need more work on their sauces too.

But what used to be a restaurant that you left feeling full, the prices are higher and the portions much smaller. You don't even get bread with all the breakfast dishes anymore and they nickel and dime you for everything. Including plain hash browns.....which have nothing in them compared to the premade casserole. -Another complaint I have is the online wait list. I always use the wait list, but this time something happened. I arrived and checked in online, as I always do. This isn't a new routine for me. I waited 25 minutes and still wasn't called so I took my two small children out of my car to check the waitlist. I was never on it. The gentleman at the front told me I had to physically come check in, even though the waitlist literally says you can click I'm here (which I did) OR in person, and that clicking I'm here does nothing until you check in with him. So I was then added to the list as a new patron and waited 45 more minutes for a seat. -The new country ham smells and tastes like feet. -the new steak is nasty, it has no flavor and they clearly buy the cheapest meat with tendons all over. Will never order again. I miss my steak and eggs. -once the waiters drop off your food, they're gone. It doesn't matter how many stars they have, they always ghost. This time I waited the entire time it took my husband to eat his food because I was trying to flag someone down for my missing food. I finally got the manager involved and ate my cold food. Left feeling dissatisfied. I don't know if they need more employees or better management.

It felt like a safe, familiar choice for a holiday morning. When we arrived, we were told the wait would be about 30 minutes. To our surprise, we were called back closer to 10 minutes after signing in, which was a very welcome start. That said, once we were called, we ended up waiting a bit longer while our table was cleaned. Unfortunately, it wasn't fully ready when we were seated. There was still trash on the floor, which I nudged aside with my foot until someone eventually came by and picked it up. Our server came over fairly quickly to ask for drink orders, and we were promptly served coffee and water, which we appreciated. After that, things slowed down. It seemed clear the restaurant was short-staffed. Our waiter was visibly running around, and it took quite a while for our food order to be taken even though we were ready. When the food finally arrived, most of the plates were incomplete. I ordered the Country Boy Breakfast with three eggs, sirloin steak tips, a biscuit with gravy, and two breakfast sides. I chose grits and the fried sweet apples. What arrived initially was the eggs, steak tips, and grits. The biscuit and gravy didn't show up until another 15-20 minutes later. The eggs were cooked sunny-side up as requested, but the steak tips were unfortunately very overcooked and, in my opinion, over-seasoned. The grits were honestly pretty bad. On the bright side, the fried sweet apples were amazing and easily the highlight of my meal. Others in our party had similar issues. Some people received eggs but not their pancakes. One person in our group of five, who ordered only French toast and bacon, didn't receive any food at all until the rest of us finally got our missing pancakes and biscuits. We didn't want to start eating until everyone had something, and by the time everything arrived, much of the food was cold. We also asked multiple times for basic accompaniments like jelly for the biscuits and salsa for the eggs and steak tips. These took a long time to arrive and required several reminders. I could sense our waiter's frustration, which I genuinely understand given the circumstances, but we were equally frustrated and disappointed with the service. Overall, the food was mid. The steak was very bad, the grits were disappointing, while the pancakes and biscuits seemed to be solid for everyone else. The eggs were fine, and the apples really stood out in a good way. I'd recommend sticking to the basics here. The prices were reasonable, but the service issues took away significantly from the experience. With better staffing, this location could likely do much better. As it stands, I can't give it more than 3 stars for average food and poor service, and even that feels a bit generous, offered in the spirit of starting the new year with positive vibes.

I was going to go with 4 stars, but then thought about it ... they did everything right. I happened to be in this general area, while visiting the famous main branch of the McAllen Public Library, which holds the record for being the largest library on one level in either the U.S., North America, or the world. Dinnertime was approaching and a barbecue place sounded just like what I needed. Cowboy Chicken is in a strip mall close enough to the library. Parking is easy and, once inside, you go through a short line to order what you want to eat, with some people eating in and others taking out. I do like to eat this regional barbeque food on occasion, and it's something I do at least once every time I'm in the Houston metro area. I always go for the 2 item combination platter. However, in the Houston area, I don't seem to land on places that offer both brisket and boneless chicken. So, in Houston, I get brisket and turkey ... and I'm still a happy camper. At this Cowboy Chicken, I asked if I could get chicken as one of the 2 meats and if it could be (a) boneless piece(s). The young lady helping me said that I could and was very helpful. I took my tray to the simple but airy eating area and started to dig in. Everything, including the sides, was delicious. The chicken and the brisket were very much to my liking. I'm not being a big baby by always asking for boneless stuff, but who wants to mess with bones and scales when eating outside of their home or at a backyard event? I wanted to add that the portion size was satisfying and that the pricing was appropriate. This "main" Cowboy Chicken has a lot of good things going for it - the food, the service, the portions, the value, and, above all, what I perceived to be a strong focus on the customer. So there you have it. If visiting the impressive main branch of the McAllen Public Library and get hungry, you might stop by Cowboy Chicken for a meal. How does that sound for a field trip?

A Hidden Gem for Mexican Seafood -- Don't Sleep on This Place!…read more As a traveler from California in town for a swim meet, I was on the hunt for good Mexican seafood and stumbled upon La Costa Grill. Based on the reviews, I had decent expectations -- but this place blew them out of the water. The ratings honestly don't do it justice. From the moment we walked in, the hospitality was warm and genuine. We were greeted by the hostess and seated right away, even during the lunch rush. Then came a wonderful surprise: our server brought out a mini skillet of the most incredible black refried beans for dipping, alongside four salsas ranging from mild to hot, all served with tostadas -- compliments of the house. Back in California, you're lucky to get one salsa, let alone refried beans as a free starter. It immediately set the tone for the meal. Our server was knowledgeable and genuinely helpful with recommendations. We ended up sharing a lunch portion of paella, an octopus taco, and a fish ceviche tostada -- and every single dish delivered. The octopus taco was a standout; served over a layer of refried beans, it was a flavor combination I didn't know I needed. The ceviche tostada was fresh and bright, and the paella was satisfying and well-seasoned. I also have to give our server extra credit for her transparency -- she mentioned upfront that the paella leans heavier on rice than seafood. That kind of honesty is rare and really appreciated. We ordered it anyway, and we were glad we did. If you're visiting McAllen and want authentic, flavorful Mexican seafood with outstanding service and hospitality, La Costa Grill needs to be on your list. I'll absolutely be returning before I head back home.
